Saw today that the Giants signed Russ Ortiz to a 1 year minimum deal. If he's as cooked as he looked for the last 2 years, it's no big deal, and if he somehow can come close to his 200-2004 form, he'll be a terrific bargain. I like this move a lot as a Giants fan - low risk, potentilly high reward.

Braves finally traded LaRoche to the Pirates for Mike Gonzalez per ESPN.
That's nice to help out that bullpen, but I don't know about losing that power...

It's a low cost, low risk stop gap type of deal - its only a 1 year of 750,000 - with Scott Podsednik having surgury, the White Sox will go into spring training with questions in LF and CF. Why not bring in another option with maybe something to prove ?Now, I won't disagree with you about the top of this lineup, and really the lineup in general - too often, it was a HR or nothing sort of lineup, and they have not addressed this at all.

Darrid Erstad sucks. I mean, really sucks. The Sox would be much better paying a AAAA guy the league minimum than having Erstad anywhere near the team.The problem with signing guys like Erstad is that managers/players pull for them. They want them to succeed (the gritty, hard nosed veteran). They give them opportunities to suck, errr, succeed.He hasn't had a decent year at the plate since 2000. Since then he has put up OPS+ of 78,88,75,95,89,60. His OBP has hovered in the 300 range. His slugging averages look like an average players OBP.He can't stay healthy, and he can't play gold glove defense anymore. He is a waste. He is the suck.

Jays sign Tomo Okha to a 1 year, 1.5 million dollar contract, with an additional 1.5 available in bonuses. Looks like him and John Thomson are the favourites to be the 4/5 in the Jays rotation... good thing they have lots of offense. If nothing else, Okha will be an upgrade over Josh Towers/Shawn Marcum/Casey Janssen.

If he did what needed to be done in his year off, this has potential.I'm probably the biggest Sammy apologist on the board, but come on, he was obviously one of the ones that was getting a little additional chemical help. If he took a year off and worked out like a beast, this will be a nice swan song for him. My fear is that he just sat by the phone waiting for a call from a big league club that never came. Even the Yankees, with all their injuries, didn't add Sosa to their circus.

Willie Randolph signed to 3 year extension as Manager of the Mets per NBC NY Evening News.

Randolph, who was to have earned $700,000 in 2007 and had no contract for beyond this season, agreed to a three-year deal that will pay him $1.4 million in '07, $1.8 million in '08 and $2.25 million in '09.
The contract also includes a club option for $2.5 million in 2010.

HOUSTON (AP) -Shortstop Adam Everett agreed Thursday to a $2.8 million, one-year contract with the Houston Astros and outfielder Jason Lane settled for a $1.05 million, one-year deal.
Everett hit .239 with six homers and a career-high 59 RBIs last year. He committed only seven errors, and his .990 fielding percentage ranked fourth for an NL shortstop in a season.
The 29-year-old, who made $1.9 million, can earn an additional $150,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 575, 600 and 625 plate appearances.
Lane hit .201 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs last season, when he was demoted for part of the year to Triple-A Round Rock. The 30-year-old Lane made $450,000 last year.
Both had been in salary arbitration.
Third baseman Morgan Ensberg remains scheduled for a hearing and has asked for a raise from $3.8 million to $4.9 million. The Astros countered at $4 million.

This lineup is way off. Unless they trade Jones, Floyd will be coming off the bench. There is no way he starts over Murton. And Theriot (who was actually great at the end of last year) and DeRosa will fight for the 2B job. Real lineup will be like:SorianoTheriot/DeRosa/MurtonLeeRamirezJonesBarrettMurton/Theriot/DeRosaIzturisPitcherThis is a very solid lineup. And Floyd coming off the bench should help him stay a little healthy and it will be real nice having some lefty power off the bench.Anyway, I like the Floyd signing. Floyd plus Pagan gives them great depth in the OF. Only problem is there are still no great defensive players in that group.

I didn't see Floyd play last year, so I don't know if he has anything left in the tank. Murton's no superstar though, and a hot start by Floyd in Spring Training erases Murton from that lineup against most right handers. I don't yet have a grip on what type of manager Pinella is going to be. Dusty hated starting young players, and I could see an old school guy like Pinella kinda leaning the same way. Did he have his fill of playing the youngsters in Tampa?I thought the DeRosa signing was awful, as I like Theriot. I don't think they paid DeRosa all that money to sit on the bench though.

I've never been a big Trot Nixon guy. I think he's pretty overrated. He's the type of player that people love to like because he's a "dirt dog". And that's fine, I like and respect that too. I just thought he was overrated out here as an actual player...

Well two new things going on in Red Sox Nation. Since I know everyone can't get enough BoSox talk:
1. Todd Helton trade rumors. They're more than just rumors - I guess "reports" is a better term. The only offer we know for sure is Mike Lowell + Julian Tavarez for Helton + a little less than half of Helton's salary. The #### you say. But that's what I've heard. Obviously the Rockies (for good reason) really want to get rid of Helton. That deal won't get it done, the Sox will have to include a prospect, and right now, that's the big question around here - nobody knows who the prosect is. The most logical choice might be Manny Delcarmen - some think Hanson, but I don't know that the Sox are ready to let go of Hanson just yet (plus we have no closer to speak of - Hanson certainly didn't look great last year, but he'd at least be in the running for the job with the field we have).
Helton isn't the same hitter anymore, but he's a patient hitter, and even in his "down" years the past 2-3 years, his OBP and OPS have been very good. Just a shame he has such a hellish contract.
2. Curt Schilling came on EEI this morning to make an announcement. Nobody really knew what it was. Some thought it would be to address rumors that he'd be running for Senator in 2008 (he's been killing John Kerry in some local polls). But he came on and announced that he will not be retiring after 2007. He's always said that this year was it, but he did the whole wife & kids talked about it, blah blah blah. He has no contract in place with the Sox for the 2008 season, and said that if one doesn't get done before spring training, he'll pitch somewhere else next season, although he did say that New York was not an option.
