How would this look:LugoDrewMannyOrtizHelton
I think the lineup would look like this:1. Lugo2. Helton3. Manny4. Ortiz5. Drew6. Youlk
Youkilis should be leading off.
I think when they signed Lugo, they envisioned him as the leadoffer hitter.I think Drew in the 2-hole is :football:
Helton historically gets on-base at a higher frequency than Drew, plus he sees more pitches...I don't know why they want Lugo leading off though.

Drew in the 2 hole over Helton is just plain dumb.

From what I've read, I don't believe the Rockies have interest in Lowell. It's going to be for prospects (and possibly Hanson) plus cash coming back from Colorado.

I think it's basically a salary dump, and the Rockies are pretty happy at getting out from Helton's contract at 50 cents on the dollar. Lowell for one year is pretty palatable in that scenario since he's making a little less than half Helton's salary (don't quote me on the numbers though). The prospects are the hangup, though I'd be surprised if the Rockies got more than one of them.

Some think Helton has lost it but I'd be willing to take that chance. Before the Tigers got Sheff I was hoping for Helton. Unfortunetly the Tigers aren't the Yaks or Red Sux so they can only afford one high priced risk per year.

Yeah, I don't understand why the Rockies would be interested in Lowell. Lowell's 9 Mil + Helton's 8 Mil (half of the 16 Mil for this year) > Helton's salary.

I don't understand where Lowell fits in this Helton deal. Garrett Atkins is firmly planted at 3rd for the Rockies, and I don't see them moving either of them to 1st.

Lowell's 1 x $9 < Helton's 5 x $16

Atkins is going to be pushed at some point in the not to distant future by Ian Stewart anyway, isn't he?

Maye they figure they'll have to move Atkins to 1st next year regardless, so now they do it this year, clear a lot of money, put Lowell at 3rd for a year as a stopgap, and then have Stewart at 3rd and Atkins at 1st starting in 2008...

Sounds like a possible three-way. Not that I haven't said that before and been completely wrong. :goodposting:

From what I've read the Rockies would try to move Lowell to another team, some one in the playoff race who needs a good glove at 3rd or an extra bat. With only 1 year on his contract it should not be hard to do.

Actually, I think they would move Atkins to 1st because of their 3b prospects in the wings. At least eventually. This deal would pave the way for that.

The Rockies may not have much interest in Lowell, but it is a no deal from the Sox side if Lowell is not included.

Lowell, Tavarez, Hansen for Helton, 45 mill, some decent prospect sounds about right. At least from the Sox standpoint.

Which prospect are we speaking of here?
Probably Ian Stewart...He had a bit of a down year last season but still projects as their 3B of the future...

from wiki:

Starting his junior season he was the back-up behind Jerry Colquitt and ahead of Peyton Manning. After and injury to Colquitt, Helton got the starting spot only to face injury himself and was replaced by Peyton Manning, who never relinquished the starting spot.

Lowell actually had a decent resurgance last year with Boston - I think his value increases big time if he goes to Col! Those doubles off the monster would be dingers.

Yes I have him on my fantasy squad!

If anything, his doubles numbers would probably be helped. Coors is a big, spaceous park.

Considering Lowell put up an OPS+ of 77 two years ago, a resurgance is not that difficult. He still only managed an OBP of 339. That is not good. But hey, if the Rockies want him, enjoy.

Braves finally traded LaRoche to the Pirates for Mike Gonzalez per ESPN.
The Pirates finally make a move that I can get a little excited about. They now have the left-handed power bat in their lineup that they've needed since opening PNC Park. Assuming that guys pick up where they left off last season, this is looking like a decent lineup.Duffy - CFWilson - SSSanchez - 2B or 3BLaRoche - 1BBay - LFNady - RFPaulino - CCastillo 2B or Bautista 3BAlthough the success of the team will rise and fall on it's starting pitching.

The Rockies already know they can lose with Helton, so a trade makes a lot of sense. I just don't know what effect it will have on their fan base. Without Helton, there will be AAA clubs that field better teams than the Rockies will trot out next year.

Kearns, Nationals Agree to $17.5 Million, 3-year Deal

WASHINGTON (AP) -Right fielder Austin Kearns and the Washington Nationals agreed Thursday to a three-year contract that guarantees him $17.5 million, adding a long-term piece to the team's rebuilding effort.

"I don't think there's going to be a better place to be very soon," Kearns said. "I feel comfortable here and I feel good about where it's going."

Kearns will get $3.5 million this year, $5 million in 2008, and $8 million in 2009, and the Nationals hold a $10 million club option for 2010, with a $1 million buyout. The contract does not include bonus clauses.

"Certainly we think Austin's going to be a cornerstone of this franchise," general manager Jim Bowden said. "His best years are ahead of him. His prime just starts now."

Kearns had filed for arbitration, asking for $4.25 million in 2007, while the Nationals offered $3.65 million. He made $1.85 million last season, when he hit .264 with 24 homers, 33 doubles and 86 RBIs for the Nationals and Reds.

Washington acquired Kearns, infielder Felipe Lopez and reliever Ryan Wagner in July in an eight-player trade with Cincinnati.

In five major league seasons, the 26-year-old Kearns has batted .265 with 79 homers, 104 doubles and 299 RBIs.

He's expected to be a middle-of-the-lineup fixture for Washington, which is revamping its player development system after three consecutive last-place finishes in the NL East.

Kearns joins third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year in 2006), first baseman Nick Johnson and catcher Brian Schneider as the team's building blocks. Johnson and Schneider both signed deals through 2009 last offseason.

"We have a good core group," Kearns said. "I don't think people actually realize the talent that already is here and how close this thing can get to where we want it."

Roberts Agrees to $4.2 Million, 1-year Deal With Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) -Second baseman Brian Roberts avoided arbitration with the Baltimore Orioles, agreeing Thursday to a $4.2 million, one-year contract.

Roberts made $3.1 million last season, when he rebounded from a serious elbow injury to hit .286 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs as Baltimore's leadoff hitter. He scored 85 runs and had 36 steals in 138 games.

Roberts had asked for $4.6 million, and the Orioles had offered $3.8 million.

His new contract includes incentives for making the All-Star team, earning a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger Award, and being named MVP for the season or in the playoffs.

The 29-year-old Roberts has a career batting average of .280. He set career highs in 2005 with a .314 batting average, 18 homers and 73 RBIs, a season that was cut short by an elbow injury that required offseason surgery.

Baltimore has two players remaining in arbitration: center fielder Corey Patterson and pitcher Erik Bedard. Patterson is seeking $4.6 million, while the Orioles are offering $4 million. Baltimore offered Bedard $2.7 million, but the left-hander filed for $4 million.

Zambrano signs 1yr/12million contract

The Cubs and Carlos Zambrano have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract worth $12 million.

Zambrano was asking for $15.5 million, while the Cubs were offering $11.025 million, and the case was set to be heard Tuesday afternoon.

I actually like the deal. Young has become the face of the franchise, not to mention the heart and soul. Guys like Kinsler and Laird are mimicking Young's work habits and attitude towards the game. That is a good thing. This deal will have zero baring on Texieria and if he stays or goes. As long at the Baseball Antichrist is his agent, I fully believe Tex will leave for the biggest money when the time comes. The only way he stays is if he walks into the Daniels office and makes his own deal. If that doesn't look like its going to happen, then you trade him soon, at his highest value. It would make my baseball pants go very crazy to see another five years of an infield of Tex/Kinsler/Young/Blalock, but I have to be realistic with any Boras client.

16 million a year for Young? He is a nice ballplayer. But 16 million for a ~800 OPS guy who is a terrible fielder? Not a good idea.

Seriously. I mean, its a bad deal now, can you imagine in year 3-5?

<---- DEFINITELY ready to eat some crow for what I said about Papelbon in the off-season. I admit I ate the story that the Sox FO gave about the health of his shoulder being helped in the role of a starter...now, obviously, they're completely reversing that scientifc opinion. :yucky:

So yeah - feel free to lay it on thick if you were someone I got into this argument with. I'llll take it.
