Extra options: Typically a team only gets three minor-league options on a player. Each option represents a year in which a big league team can bounce a player between the minors and big leagues as many times as it wants.

The Indians have acquired a fourth option on Danny Salazar for 2015 because he didn't earn five years of service time in the minors because of his time on the disabled list.
Hopefully don't need it...but these are the highlights of a normal Tribe offseason.

We seem like a pretty trendy pick this year. I don't think SI will jinx anything, lots of people have picked us. Really surprised by all of this pub quite honestly.

...but at least Carrasco only got a jaw contusion.

ETA: Brantley should be back Friday night in Minnesota.

It's nice to see Bourn finally got benched. I was tired of looking at "Bourn Strikeout Face" or "Bourn GIDP face".

Since Kipnis has been put in the lead off spot, he's really taking off. Good move, Tito.

Some thoughts from twitter-land on Klubot's performance last night:

August Fagerstrom ‏@AugustF_MLB 8h8 hours ago

Four of the 15 lowest contact rates allowed now belong to Indians pitchers: 1. Salazar, 68% 8. Kluber, 73% 11. Carrasco, 75% 15. Bauer, 76%
T.J. Zuppe ‏@TJZuppe 7h7 hours ago

Of the 54 total swings the Cardinals took tonight against Corey Kluber, they swung and missed 24 times (44.4%).
Todd Paquette ‏@IndiansAccounts 10h10 hours ago

SP's with 35+ IP with 18 (SO) or less. #Kluber tonight 8 IP with 18 SO. Mark Buehrle 18 Kyle Gibson 17 Doug Fister 17 Jeremy Guthrie 14
Kevin Dean ‏@kevnbaseball 7h7 hours ago

Kluber had more strikeouts in eight innings tonight (18) than Kyle Gibson has in 43.1 innings this season (17).
Pretty amazing stuff last night.

I don't think I'm going to be able to resist jumping on the Indians bandwagon.

A lot to love about the MLB team, and it's just hard not to eventually root for the guys that came through this way in the minors. After the Braves had one foot out the door from the minute they got here, hopefully, the Indians will be here for quite awhile.

Particularly once Bradley Zimmer makes it to Cleveland. Love that kid. He got robbed of a huge moment last night. He smacked his Carolina League leading 6th HR to break a 1-1 stalemate in the 8th, then some Blue Rocks jerkoff drilled a pinch hit 3-run bomb.

Julio Franco still swings a good stick http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2015/05/10/former-pro-franco-stays-busy-in-japan-as-player-manager/27078711/

Julio Franco a player-manager in Japan: 'I don't see myself out of baseball'AP 8:23 a.m. EDT May 10, 2015

KONOSU, Japan (AP) — Julio Franco is getting the best of both worlds as a 56-year-old player-manager for the Ishikawa Million Stars of Japan's semi-professional Baseball Challenge League.

Not only does the native of the Dominican Republic and former major league All-Star get to keep playing the game he loves, Franco now has a chance to pass on a wealth of baseball knowledge to a new generation of players.

"I don't see myself out of baseball," Franco said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "I can go fishing, go play golf or go to Starbucks but at the end of the day, I love baseball and this is what I want to do."

When he signed a contract with the Million Stars, Franco saw himself more as a manager than player but that hasn't been the case so far. Due to an injury to a key player, Franco finds himself playing more than he expected.

And he's doing well for a guy who started his pro career back in 1982.

Playing in 10 of his team's 14 games this season, Franco has a .333 batting average with four RBIs and six runs scored.

"I wasn't planning to play this much but one of my best hitters got hurt so I have to play first base or DH," Franco said. "I was thinking about just pinch-hitting and playing once a week but since he got hurt I'm playing a lot more than I expected."

As much as he loves playing, Franco says what really motivates him is the chance to teach the game to young players.

"What I enjoy most is the teaching," Franco said. "When I went to America there were a lot of guys who put me on the right track and that's what I want to do here."

While he has no plans to leave Japan anytime soon, Franco said he sees his position with Ishikawa as a stepping stone to a possible coaching or managing job in Japan's pro leagues or even Major League Baseball.

Meanwhile, his young players couldn't be more thrilled to have someone of Franco's stature as their mentor.

"He has a lot of knowledge and is very wise so we pick his brain a lot," Million Stars catcher Jack Daru said. "He's given us a different insight into the game because he's played here and in the United States."

Franco played parts of 23 major league seasons for eight teams from 1982-2007, with stints in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines and South Korea for the Samsung Lions during that time.

A three-time All-Star infielder and former American League batting champion, Franco was the oldest active player in the majors when he played his last game for the Atlanta Braves in 2007 at the age of 49, and is showing no signs of slowing down.

"I want to play until I'm 66," Franco said. "That's the goal."

Need to find that #5 SP for the rotation. Saw this stat line on Twitter this morning from Zack Meisel:

Indians Top 4 SP (CK, TB, CC, DS):

16-11, 3.65 ERA, 8.1 H/9 allowed

Indians No. 5 SP (ZM, TH, BC, SM):

1-6, 11.57 ERA, 16.3 H/9 allowed
Offense is starting to show some life, but they need to show some consistency with that 5th starter. Can't be easy thinking you're going to lose every 5 games. CK and TB have been lights out lately. Even CC and DS has shown some life. Would like to see someone step up to take on the 5th spot, but it's like a game of "Not It" every time. Hard to win a game when you're down by the 2nd inning.

Kipnis ranks 1st among AL second basemen in AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, 2B, H & TB. Here's AL All-Star results so far:

1. Altuve

2. Infante

3. Kinsler

4. D. Travis

5. Pedroia

Are you effin' kidding me? The only guy I can legitimately see Kip being behind in this vote is Altuve. :hot:

Tribe rolling 12-1 over the Rangers after 6! :pickle: Everyone in the starting lineup scored, and everyone except Aviles had a hit.

Hammy was talking about how the Tribe won't have to face King Felix in a 4 game series against the Mariners starting tomorrow. And then he went on to discuss how Seattle fans were still whining about Kluber winning the Cy Young.

Hammy: And Seattle fans are still whining about King Felix not winning the Cy Young.

Rosie: Hmmm...

Hammy: Whaaaateveerrrr...

:lmao:

Indians are 7 games behind Kansas City and Minnesota, 6 behind Detroit.

10-14 at home is a big reason why. Only behind Tampa Bay in worst home attendance.

MLB draft is Monday. Indians have 4 of the top 100 picks - 17, 42, 59, 93

They have alternated their first pick the last six years between College and High School players. If they stick to it, a College player will be picked this year. Have had no success drafting High School players first since the 90's - Ramirez, Wright, Sabathia, (the 3 young guys still in minors could make it).

Well, at least it's very interesting that we took Aiken.

From BA:

The Indians, meanwhile, stuck to their best-player available approach at No. 17 and drafted lefthander Brady Aiken, last year’s No. 1 overall pick. Aiken had reportedly worked out an agreement with the Astros for $6.5 million last year, but that fell apart after a difference of opinion of what an MRI of his elbow taken in a post-draft physical showed, and Aiken ultimately turned down a reported $5 million deal. He went to IMG Academy to play for their postgrad team this spring, but threw just 13 pitches in his first start before exiting the game with an injury and undergoing Tommy John surgery 13 days later.

Those complex circumstances made Aiken one of the biggest wild cards of the draft and led to him being available to the Indians in the middle of the first round.

Indians scouting director Brad Grant praised the Indians scouts for their work evaluating Aiken over the last two years. He declined to comment on the specifics of Aiken’s medical issues, saying only that the Indians did their due diligence and felt good about selecting him.

Grant said the Indians also liked Aiken’s intangibles.

“That’s one of the things that really stands out with Brady is his character and work ethic and his commitment to getting better,” Grant said. “That’s something that definitely stood out in terms of his character and his willingness to return from here.”

After selecting Aiken, the Indians took two Florida high school pitchers, righthander Triston McKenzie and lefthander Juan Hillman. The trio of pitchers, all of whom rank in the top 51 on the BA 500, gives them an impressive haul if they are able to sign all three.

INDIANS TO CALL UP TOP PROSPECT LINDOR

SS Francisco Lindor, Keith Law's No. 6 prospect entering this season, will make his big league debut Sunday in Detroit. Lindor is hitting .279 this season at Triple-A, and .400 in June with 6 multi-hit games.
