** OFFICIAL ** Cleveland Guardians thread - spring training (1 Viewer)

Cleveland has been the best team in baseball since the All-star break and especially hot as of late.  Cubs have had the best season, but should be a bit worried.  It is usually the hottest team that wins.  Hopefully both teams get there.

Impressive!  Kinda bummed they didn't give the kid the W, he deserved it.

Impressive game by Merritt.  Looked like a mini-Klubot out there holding back emotions and just letting his pitches do the talking.

Glad to see some bats start to work again.  The team needs to enjoy the break and rest up.  The pitching staff is like a hydra - take one head down and two more pop up in its place.  Amazing job by the bullpen and great game management by Francona.  He made all the right adjustments and has this team trusting in each other and having fun while playing the game.  Great chemistry that should serve them well in the World Series!

Never thought the Tribe was for real....Congrats on a great season and championship.

Antonetti: Coco Crisp was informed that Indians will not pick up his option. No surprise there.

Indians have until Monday to make qualifying offer (1 yr, $17.2M) to Napoli (Davis def not getting one). Looks like Indians might extend it.

If the Indians do extend the QO to Napoli, there is no way he declines it. The only question would be if he & Indians work out extension.

Ryan Lewis @RyanLewisABJ

Indians have expressed interest in keeping Mike Napoli and Rajai Davis in Cleveland, per Antonetti.

Per Antonetti, Jose Ramirez isn't locked in at 3B. His versatility allows for different configurations in '17. He's liked in multiple spots.

Indians will look to improve starting pitching depth this winter. Antonetti said Cody Anderson, Mike Clevinger will go to ST as starters.

With bulk of roster intact, don't expect Indians to hand out any huge contracts via free agency. Only a few complementary holes to fill.

Indians plan on having conversations about extensions for pre arb/arb players as off-season progresses. Lindor among potential candidates.

Antonetti: Ramirez is in plans as the third baseman as of now. No plans of moving Brantley to 1B or Kipnis to the outfield.

I've heard the random musings of getting rid of Nap, putting Brantley at 1B and looking for a big bat OF for CF.

I don't trust Brantley will be back, let alone back to his old self.  The shoulder surgeries sound severe enough that normal/everyday living will be troublesome.  I'm just not sold that the range of motion/strength will be where it was, and I wouldn't count on him for much.

I like Nap - a good locker-room leader, veteran to have on staff.  With that said, his bat didn't show up in the post-season.  There is a need for a heavy hitter in the middle of the lineup, and I don't see that on the roster.  With a almost complete offensive roster, who would you look to pick up to fill that need?

1B FA: There are no FA close to Nap's numbers out there for next year.  Howard?  Moreland?

OF FA: Holliday, Trumbo, Rasmus, Bautista, Pagan, Desmond

DH FA: Encarnacion? Beltran? If you go to pick up a DH, what do you do with Santana and/or Napoli?  I would think they don't go this route unless Nap isn't returning in 2017

Assuming the roster will look like:

C: Gomes, Perez

1B: Santana, Napoli

2B: Kipnis

SS: Lindor

3B: Ramirez, ???

OF: Guyer, Chisenhall, Naquin, Almonte, Diaz?, Zimmer?

Util: Martinez, Gonzalez

What does Martinez provide?  I'd like to see Diaz or Zimmer up next year and Martinez off the roster.  He just annoys me.  I didn't see alot of Erik Gonzalez, but I've heard he's blocked with our current IF setup.  If Ramirez moves to the OF, can Gonzalez play 3B?

I'd love to get a big bat like you say, but there's no point getting my hopes up, it ain't happenin'.  Desmond seems like a good fit for us in CF but I think he'll stay in Texas.  I've always liked Fowler too.

Been hearing they may extend the QO to Napoli, and if they do, it would be hard for him to turn down I think $17M.  That would essentially force Brantley to stay in the OF, but like you said we don't know what we have there.

The OF is a mess.  Rumblings are we might try to keep Rajai around.  I like him, but we're just crowded with OK guys.  Ideally, I'd like to be in a situation to platoon ONE outfield spot, not 2.  We have Guyer now who will always play vs LHP, so he's platooning in LF or RF.  Naquin isn't an everyday CF the way I see it, too many holes in his swing still.  Almonte will be back so Coco is gone.  Nothing falls into place until the Brantley question is answered unfortunately.

The Tribe was like 26th or 27th in payroll this year, so nobody got more out of less (as far as $$$ go).  This is the point where some teams would try to make a big move or two, in our case it would be in the OF, but as we've seen that is not how this owner will allow his front office to operate.  Looks like we need to lock up Lindor, Ramirez, and probably Salazar in the next year or two to long term contracts....which is the one thing we've done well over the years.

For OF help, Zimmer might not be ready, but don't forget about Greg Allen. He's fast as hell, makes great contact, doesn't strike out, and even has a little pop (3 HRs in the first week in the AZ Fall League). It was only High A, but when he was here, he was a huge spark for the offense leading off (offense really wasn't the same after he got called up).

If he keeps developing he might be the lead-off man/CF of the future, and he might be ready in early 2017.

And I have little doubt that Mejia is making an impact catching for the Indians sometime in 2017. As far as I know, he might even start that season in High A, but he'll rocket through the system once he gets to AA I think (and I expect to be at least by May 1st). I could be a year ahead on that, but he's a special talent and strange things could happen.

Here's an interesting thought....

Olney is reporting that the Reds are entertaining trade ideas for OF Hamilton.  Living down here, he's a team guy who plays well in CF.  He has the speed/base-running that fits into the current club's mold and can hit lead-off.  He tends to strikeout a lot, but just a basic bunt could easily turn into a base hit for this guy with his speed.  A batting order where your top three are Hamilton, Kipnis, Lindor has some run potential.  His defense isn't too shabby, a lot better than Naquin's.  I wouldn't mind trading a couple of prospects to Cincy for Hamilton.  I'm sure they would want a lot in return, but he's a difference maker that could easily fit right into the teams MO.

You want him nowhere near the top of your lineup. 9 hitter? That's fine, but who wants anyone with a .297 OBP getting an extra AB a game?

He definitely has as some work to do to get his BA up.  I've seen him bat all over the lineup.  I think his best approach is to bunt and use his speed.  Every now and then hes like a blind squirrel and finds a nut.

Cleveland Indians, free-agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion talking about multiyear deal | cleveland.com
A month ago I thought pulling in someone like this would be a pipe dream.  Like we've heard, the market is shrinking.  Usually that means we are just a bargaining piece for him to go elsewhere, but he might want/have to stay in the AL, so that might help.  Probably won't be the greatest contract in years 3 and 4, but you never know.  I'm sure he'll lock on in the NL now.

For his home/road splits (I worry about that with Toronto players), the raw numbers were close in '16, he just hit more doubles at Rogers while also having less PA's there.  In '15 he was basically the same home/road.  In '14 he was better at home.

Pipe dream to a Christmas Miracle!!   :excited:

Heard the news last night while checking out the Cincinnati Zoo's Festival of Lights.  Love it and worth the late 1st rnd pick.  3 years @ $20MM with option.  Can't wait to see what the lineup looks like with him in there!  Do you drop Santana back to 5 and let Kip lead off?  Will Brantley be back, or maybe it's time for Diaz to become the next Naquin?

The only downside is that my "Party at Napoli's" shirt is no longer valid. :kicksrock:

For you Ohio-based Tribe fans..."Tribe Report" is back at 7 PM tonight on SportsTime Ohio. :pickle:

A couple of interesting blog posts this morning:

EE, Thome and aging curves discusses what would be the appropriate comp player to EE at this stage of his career. While signing EE would seemingly go against what they did with Thome back when, they lay out the case IMO for cautious optimism.

Burning River baseball discusses who should catch for the Tribe in 2017. While these guys tend to toss around a lot of advanced stats that I can't understand, the basic point is that if money weren't the issue, Perez should be starting.

Cleveland will host the 2019 All-Star game, marking the 6th time they've hosted it (more than any other team).

However, tucked in the Bastian article is a bit about the continued discussions regarding Chief Wahoo. I'm wondering if there was a quid pro quo about getting rid of the old Chief in return for an ASG.

How do tickets work for this? Would love to take my FIL.

See what you get for making the World Series??  If you had stayed in third place nobody would have gave a dam about Chief Wahoo!
