** OFFICIAL ** Cleveland Guardians thread - spring training (1 Viewer)

Yeah, that comeback was awesome. Aside from the comeback stats, I think they said it was both the most runners in scoring position and hits with runners in scoring position for the Indians in any game since 1974.

Last night was a tough loss, but I really like Clevinger.  Still figuring it out, but he's getting there and the stuff is very good. I thought it was really about to go sideways in the 2nd (I think) and settled in nice.

BTW, please tell me the locals call him The Cleaver.

Nope. The Flow.

new doc airing tonight on MLB network @ 7:30...The Dynasty That Almost Was

A documentary about the 1990's Indians teams that electrified baseball and the city of Cleveland. Winning 6 of 7 division titles, longtime broadcaster Tom Hamilton, former manager Mike Hargrove, players Jim Thome, Kenny Lofton, Omar Vizquel, Orel Hershiser and former front office executives John Hart, Dan O'Dowd and Mark Shapiro are among those interviewed discussing one of the most explosive offensive clubs ever assembled.

The Man With No Name said:
Hart deserves so much credit for signing all those young unproven players to multi year contracts.
And Albert Belle is still wrong for blaming Hart for not winning.

So, any guesses on what happens at the trade deadline?
I wouldn't mind seeing them go after another SP.  With that said, it may cost us McKenzie, Meija and/or Naquin - at least.  I would think it would have to be for a SP that we would have control over for a couple of years and not a one year rental.

With that said, I'd like to see them go for Cueto, just because I enjoy watching him pitch.

Great pitching lately.  Clevinger is developing really nicely and seems to have found a spot in the rotation.  If the bats can wake up and stay consistent, these guys will be a major player in the post season again.  Lindor needs to go back to being a contact hitter and not a home run hitter.  I think he fits better as being the guy you can count on to get on base and cause havor on the basepaths.  Let EE and Santana worry about the HRs.  Lindor and Ramirez would do well to just hitting doubles and getting on base for the big bats to bring them around.

The lack of SBs are a little concerning.  I know Davis led the team last year, but Ramirez and Lindor were right behind him.  I feel like we're not as active on the basepaths, which could also be due to the fact that the team isn't hitting consistently either.

Problem this year will be the Cubs paid a very steep prospect price for Quintana.  Not saying they overpaid, but Cease and Eloy is a haul for the Sox.

If the debate is Sonny Gray for Meija or McKenzie....or Cueto or Degrom for McKenzie AND Meija....I'm not sure which side of the fence I'm on just yet.

Mejia should be the Indians only untradeable prospect. Catchers that can hit are few and far between and are a very valuable commodity. And he is well above average behind the plate too.

I saw someone on twitter pondering packaging him and McKenzie for Andrew McCutcheon.  :yucky:

This West Coast trip has been disappointing.  I caught the last two ABs at a restaurant last night.  Down 1 with bases loaded and even Ramirez couldn't generate a base hit.  It looked like he was trying to draw a walk the way he stood there and stared down the pitches.  Granted one strike was outside the zone, but in that position can you afford to just stare down pitches and let the Ump take charge of the situation?  Easy for me to say, sure, but the stage was set and all we got was another let down. :kicksrock:

Just saw this  Every team's untouchable player at trade deadline

From it:

Cleveland Indians: Triston McKenzie, RHP. Catcher Francisco Mejia isn't going anywhere, but I'd make this rail-thin 19-year-old off-limits as well. He doesn't turn 20 until August, but as one of the youngest players in the Carolina League he has still dominated with 124 strikeouts in 96⅔ innings.

You can have him, dirt cheap. I'd take a slice of pizza for him. He had a good year last year, but he sounded like such an entitled jerk earlier this year. I want him gone and Ahmed Rosario called up asap.

The Blue Jays have been swept!!  Salazar looked awesome last night and Kluber was straight fire today.

Make-up game against the Reds tomorrow at 7 PM.

What is the starting rotation going forward with Salazar?  Kluber, Carassco, and Salazar. Is Cleavinger in the rotation to stay?

Tomlin goes tonight in the make-up against the Reds. Clevinger is going tomorrow night and is probably staying in the rotation IMO as he's seemingly figured it out. The last spot could be between Bauer and Tomlin. With those two, you're never sure whether the good one or the bad one is going to show up.

From watching the game yesterday, Chiz went :lmao: when Dre Knott asked him about being out "weeks, not days". He says he's targeting an August 1st return.

I haven't done a deep dive on days off and double headers coming up, but I would consider a 6-man at some point in Aug/Sept.  Also depends on how big the lead is and who is performing well.

Particularly with games against the Red Sox and Yankees.

What a game last night!  I don't have STO down here in Cincy, but I "watched" the play-by-play on my phone while my wife and son watched the Reds/NYY game.  If the Tribe keeps playing like they have over the last 5 games, I don't see anyone who could stop them.  Pitching has been great, and the bats have started to come alive.  I'd still like to see them a little more active on the base paths, but that's not too much of a concern if they keep hitting double after double after double.

Plus...2 Grand Salamis in the same game, with one being a walk-off?!?!?!?!    :excited:  :headbang: :banned:

MLB At Bat app FTW. I listen to Hammy while watching STO.

I used this for the week before and after the ASB when it was free.  I might have to pony up the $2,99/month to listen to hammy.  Thought about the video package, but can't bring myself to pay $25/mth just yet.  Plus I'm hoping MLB/ESPN/FS1 realize just how good the Tribe is playing and will begin putting them on national tv in August.

Tomlin has had 3 quality starts in a row. Don't think Bauer has done that all year.

I like Bauer and his quirkiness.  I took a look at his stats vs Tomlin's based on a quality start being more than 5IP, less than 4ER, and 5 or more SO in a start.

Bauer had 4 that registered:

Bauer OPP  W  L  ERA  G  GS  CG  SHO  SV  SVO  IP  H  R  ER  HR  HB  BB  IBB  SO  NP-S  AVG  WHIP  GO/AO

Tomlin had 6 (including his last three starts):

Out of his last 3 starts, Bauer had one really bad outing (0.2IP, 4ER, 3BB, 2SO) which was a real stinker as part of that post-ASB Left Coast trip.  But his other two weren't bad, each with 5IP, 3ER, and 6 or more SO. So depending upon how one would define "quality starts", Bauer is in the conversation with Tomlin.  With that said, both are bottom of the rotation type of guys.  I see Tomlin as that steady pitcher who won't wow you with SO or flashy pitches, but should give you a solid 5+IP with low ERs and a lot of opportunities for defensive plays in the field.  Bauer likes to be that "gunslinger" type of pitcher who wants to be a TOR type guy, but lacks the consistency.  His SO numbers are typically high, but he doesn't always have the consistency to maintain it for multiple starts.

One of these guys will hit the bullpen in the coming week, but who do you keep?  Tough decision for Tito...but then again, I wouldn't be surprised if he sent Clev down and kept both Tomilin and Bauer in the rotation.  My choice, I'd keep Tomlin in the rotation only because going to the BP would irritate Bauer so much he'd use that chip on his shoulder to prove why he shouldn't be there every time he took the mound.  He seems to be motivated/wired that way, and I think Tito could get a few more quality innings out of him that way.   :2cents:

$20 for a year FTW. You get the playoffs/WS also.

Bauer goes out for the 8th, seeing the top of the Angels order for the 4th time...and sets them down on 7 pitches!!!

That kind of performance is in him, but when he sucks... :wall:

He could be a great pitcher, but it's almost like there is a lack of focus for him - or maybe too much focus.  He likes to tweak his pitches and sequences so much, that I feel he makes himself too inconsistent to remember what worked well in what situations.

He's half a headcase. We're talking about the guy with the crazy warm-up routine that injured himself on a drone during the playoffs.

He seems like the kind of guy that will figure it out in his 30s and have one or two great years just before his skills decline sharply.

Then again, he's only 26 so we can still hope Tito and Callaway get him to live up to his ability before that.

Help me understand this statement.  I see two different things here "warm up" and "drone".  Completely agree on the drone piece.  That was avoidable.  I get it's a hobby and most likely a stress reliever, but poor timing/bad judgement.

Can you unpack the "crazy warm-up routine" piece?  I know it's a little unorthodox which piqued my interest.  The more I studied it and looked at the "why", I tend to like it.  I know it's unconventional, but it is a routine and strategy that is catching on in the HS and College ranks.  We have two Performance Centers in the Cincinnati area that teach the same pitching foundation classes where Bauer studied and learned.  Is it "crazy" because it's unconventional?  Or do you see a flaw with it?  Seriously asking, as I was considering their youth pitching program for my son and his team.

Honestly I'm not qualified to evaluate an MLB pitching warm-up routine on my own. I've heard ex-players in the media express some doubts about it. It certainly hasn't helped Bauer achieve consistent results to date.

One of the things he does long toss before the game. And by "long toss", I mean throw it from foul line to foul line while listening to his favorite band Amon Amarth on his mp3 player. His dad was an engineer and they've worked together on his exercise and work routine all through his baseball career.
