Just multiply Italy's COVID numbers by the ratio of the populations (US 327M, Italy 61M) and compare to US COVID numbers.  So basically multiply Italy's curve by 5.5 and find out where the US is on that curve at the moment.

Assumes that population densities are similar, so only a rough comparison approach.
honestly, I think we should not look at this as US vs Italy.  The US has 50 states, all with different infection rates, hitting the panic button at different times in the ramp up.  We should be comparing Washington State or New York to Italy.

I think when it's all said and done the NCAA is going to at least postpone the tourney if not cancel but I would pay $50 a game to watch Duke play in an empty arena. The feed would be on a constant 30 second delay with Krzyzewski on the sidelines. I know he can turn it on & off but I don't think he could make it a full game without dropping a few F-bombs.

Italy definitely blew up today, but I think we all knew that would keep happening.  They are really our eyes and ears for what the next few weeks are going to be like.  They are on lockdown, their cases are exponentially rising, but the lockdown should start to have an impact soon.  How much of an impact it will have is crucial.  I'd predict we have 1-2 more days of explosive growth, then the numbers will begin to level off, but who really knows.
But what happens when we level off, everybody goes back to work and it fires back up again? How do we truly get rid of this?

Almost all of them have reinsurance to cover large scale claims but yes it will be costly.  That's how insurance works, really.  They collect money and pay out when bad things happen.
I was just reviewing the travel insurance we purchased a while back to see if the general pandemic would be a covered reason to cancel and get a and NOPE.  However, if (and big if at the moment) we do travel, their is coverage there if directly impacted:

Claims due to known, foreseeable, or expected events, epidemics, or fear of travel are generally not covered, and coverage can vary by state.  However, until further notice, although not covered under most plans, we are currently accommodating claims for:

Under Emergency Medical Care and Emergency Medical Transportation Benefits: Emergency medical care and emergency medical transportation for a customer who becomes ill with COVID-19 while on their trip.

Under Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption Benefits: Trip cancellation and trip interruption if a customer becomes ill with COVID-19 either before or during their trip.

Under Trip Cancellation Benefit: Non-refundable, non-transferable trip cancellation expenses for customers who purchased their plan prior to January 22, 2020 for trip components in Mainland China, South Korea, or the Lombardy or Veneto regions of Italy and departing prior to April 1, 2020.

The above list is strictly applicable to COVID-19.  This is only available for customers whose plan includes the applicable benefit.  All other terms, conditions, and exclusions of the plan apply as normal.
May still try and take a voucher from Delta, but will likely wait until Monday to fully decide (flights on late Wed night).  My wife and I a young-ish and in good health and, having spoken to those who have flown this week, planes are half full.  The music festival we were heading to in Boise as part of our trip has been postponed, so large crowds will not be an issue either.

Will casino's shut down? Seems a likely place to catch a virus. How about the WSOP? I believe it starts in May. If this keeps trending in the direction it's trending i don't see any way possible it could go on.

Seems irresponsible given what we know but people gonna people. If you go I kinda feel like it's on you (not you personally, but "you" as in the individual) if something happens.
Goes well beyond the bolded. If I don't go, that doesn't stop it from spreading from an infected person to perhaps thousands they come in contact with at the festival. And it can then explode from there. So it affects way more than the "you" that make the bad choices. THIS is why SXSW cancelled, because people are idiots and can't be counted on for anything approaching a rational decision.

would hope we are through the worst by mid-April, and in full recovery mode by mid-May

Ok here's a run-down of my symptoms.  You tell me if this fits with narrative

Week of 2/24 - Exposed to people coming back from West China after their 14 day quarantine

Day 0 2/24 - First day with upper respiratory symptoms.  Began OTC medicine treatment in day and before bed

Symptoms continue, and get worse/better over next 8 days.  some days have zero symptoms at all.

Day 11 3/8 3/9 - Crippling Diarrhea.  I mean crippling.  Started Immodium.  still coughing

3/11 - Low fever 99.4 stayed home more OTC.  Tried to get flu test (not COV test) was declined.  Fever too low

Day 17 Today 3/12 -  Staying home, OTC medicine working fine, feel much better cough gone.

Throughout this have had - Minimal if any runny nose.  At times extreme chest tightness.  Coughing is non productive, meaning can't get any crap out.  Fatigued.  Needing a lot of coffee.

Diagnose me dr. fbgs
Low likelihood, but may be worthwhile to be tested for public health contact tracing. Is drive through testing available in your area?

I'd have to guess so with the older demographic that goes there, it could end up spawning Covid-20.  Our toilets would really be in trouble then.

Wife and I are most likely cancelling our Vegas trip next week.  For sure if NCAA is cancelled.  It was a Palm Springs/Vegas trip so we'll probably just extend Palm Springs.  Feel like we're safer there than in the Bay Area right now anyway.

Of course, that I get.  But they likely didn't price product with any anticipation of large scale, extended quarantines of a large chunk of the workforce.

Herd immunity, in the end.  Once half the population has antibodies the virus has a hard time spreading.

Early and mass testing, with immediate quarantine, could stop it.  We have yet to get traction on that.  Progress will be made.

One near Madeira beach was slammed packed. Couldn’t find a parking spot.
Older crowd?  I was at the one on Dale Mabry and Linebaugh...younger skewing area I'd think, who are I'm sure reacting at different times and to a lesser degree.

Well it depends on how many people get it.  South Korea and China stopped this virus before it had a chance to take over.  But there is no herd immunity now, as in the end, only a fraction of their population got it.

I have a trip to Santa Barbara planned end of April / first of May... I'd be driving but a lot of folks that are going (it's a fraternity reunion thing) would be flying.  I suspect it's getting canceled or rescheduled.  Glad I booked refundable room!

Costco at 10:30 this morning more crowded than I’ve ever seen it.
which probably means I caught the virus.

On Saturday they had employees wiping down every cart before people took them inside   Today, there aren’t even wipes out there
That's going to the irony of this crap - people flooding out to prepare for being at home, but 100s of people jammed in a store and lines together.    I am glad I did a little before, and it's not as cheap as Costco, but if the option is still available I might go this midnight shopping route again to avoid as many people.

Was asked specifically to not come in by my GP yesterday.   Though they didn't say, they wouldn't see me they requested not to.  It was odd.
There are a lot of considerations here. Basically you have a potential exposure, but are getting better while effectively on self quarantine. Does the office even have access to COVID testing?

What would you like your doctor to do? What do you expect they can provide that will change your current self management?

Well like I said earlier, but there are 100 more pages, they had me set to get a FluA/B screening done.  The receptioninst at the time said if those came back negative they would push the sample in for a COV test.  In the morning the NP called and said if fever was <103 don't come in for any screening and just stay at home and wait for >103 or get better.

They were very careful to say that they were not preventing me from coming in and I was welcome to do that to push for FluA/B, but they couldn't give me a COV test in any situation, if that was what I was ultimately going to demand.

I'm fine, but I'm going to be pissed if I got more people sick than was going to happen regardless.

Disagree.  Daily podcast this morning detailed how lockdown has only modest impact as the virus spreads within the family.  They need to isolate the infected immediately or it will be a LONG time before the virus runs out of uninfected to jump to.
