The same poster who ignored me when I challenged an unrelated, baseless assertion. Later, he ignored the guy with whom he made the bet
Can't remember the bet and which poster it was.  But the guy was giving @Mr. Ham a ton of #### about his take on this and his prepping and all.

He laughed Ham right off the board if I remember correctly.

The toilet paper thing, is this all because this stuff is made in China?  I can't clearly find this thru google, in fact if I look through google it would make me think we make all TP in the USA from the major brands.  Why is this such a tight commodity?

Full disclosure: I have plenty on hand.  If an fbg needs some I can fax it.
Its one of those things that just feeds on itself.

10 days ago, I was stocking up on a few things - canned goods/snacks, etc, and decided we already had enough TP, so I did not get any.

Then as the last week has gone by, TP was selling out, and I would notice costco would be sold out.

That gets me nervous - not because I am expecting diarrhea in the house, but now I am not certain I can get it when we do run out in normal course - so I buy an extra package today when I see it as costco, even though I hope we won't need it for a few weeks.  And, the current supply will sell out - causing someone else to panic, and buy the first time they see it...

Gosh I am going to go nuts if there are absolutely no sports on for weeks or months on end.  Yes I know there are more important things but I need entertainment, dangit!
Was thinking the same.  Last year I was isolated at home this very month after the snip - but I got to watch NCAA games for four days straight which made it bearable.  If I'm stuck at home and there are no sports at all on, this will really suck.

This gets asked often in this thread, but it's been moving like lightning. I'm glad to answer again:

Perceived inability to get out of the house over an indeterminate time period. Or else not wanting to go to stores during war-zone time. Stock up on stuff (like TP) you don't want to run out of in the short term.

If people were buying, say, a 30-day supply ... it wouldn't be that big of a commodity. But too many are buying at "bomb shelter" levels, and that's making TP scarce in stores. Other people, in turn, see that TP is hard to come by ... so when they see it somewhere, they overbuy and make it yet more scarce. And the cycle continue feed upon itself. Same thing happened with hand sanitizer last week.

Kansas has announced three new cases, all were attendees of a "Florida conference previously associated with the outbreak." I'm guessing that's CPAC?
At least one of the Florida cases down here was linked to the EMS Today conference in Tampa,  March 2 - March 6.

1st benefit listed for the conference is:

Network with thousands of EMS professionals from multiple countries.

Not only does my local grocery store have TP today, but they have TP on sale.

9.99 for a 30 pack of decent sized rolls.

Thought that was kind of funny.

maid is currently here.  i probably would've cancelled if there were cases in my area.  somehow having my house disinfected seems reassuring, but she cleans a lot of houses :oldunsure:
We have a maid too.  Not sure what to do.  We provide her gloves and stuff as it is.

These situations aren't exactly corner cases either.  It's stuff we all have to internalize and de-risk in some manner.

our maid comes every other Saturday ... she's due on the 21st - damn straight i'm allowing her in, would love her around during any quarantine shenanigans, ya know?

If I owned a grocery store, I would also advertise a sale on TP, and stock in somewhere in the back of the store past the fast food and beer aisle.

Bad update today for Spain.  They are now trending to Italy on March 4th

782 new cases and 31 new deaths today.

So we are literally days away from chaos in Spain.

I've been on 3 cruises in the last 4 years.  Hasn't been talked about much, but the poor people of the island nations rely on cruises. This is sad for them.
There's so many low-income people that are going to be impacted - tons of self-employed and service organizations that will be hurt.  There will be people that get sick, some will die from this and there will also be people that go bankrupt either from medical bills or lack of income.

*YOU* should cancel the maid because you are in quarantine for something.  Not worrying about what SHE will bring in.  Come on.

Went out this morning to the grocery store. Water, frozen vegetables, bleach, toilet paper, mineral water for drinking and lounging.

I hope this goes okay -- that the damage and disruption isn't as great as it seems it will be. Best wishes and all that for all you guys and your safety.

Yes. I've read much of our toiletries and personal hygiene products are actually imported from China. Companies don't disclose this like they do larger ticket items.

Interesting report

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762689

aiwan is 81 miles off the coast of mainland China and was expected to have the second highest number of cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to its proximity to and number of flights between China.1 The country has 23 million citizens of which 850 000 reside in and 404 000 work in China.2,3 In 2019, 2.71 million visitors from the mainland traveled to Taiwan.4 As such, Taiwan has been on constant alert and ready to act on epidemics arising from China ever since the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003. Given the continual spread of COVID-19 around the world, understanding the action items that were implemented quickly in Taiwan and assessing the effectiveness of these actions in preventing a large-scale epidemic may be instructive for other countries.

Germany still doing a great job with their medical care, but not doing a great job on new cases.  Today went from 2,000 to 2,500 cases.

I'm almost becoming immune to the numbers now.  Everyone is following the same path and we haven't seen cases slow down anywhere outside of China and South Korea.

Costco at 10:30 this morning more crowded than I’ve ever seen it.
which probably means I caught the virus.

On Saturday they had employees wiping down every cart before people took them inside   Today, there aren’t even wipes out there

Come on man we want a running diary of life at the icon bunker.

Day 26–beans not sprouting. TP supply being tested. Spirits still high. 🤣
  I have a humble little 2k square foot place in the suburbs. Currently getting furnace fixed as the flame sensor went out. #excitement

GF did order 2 more cases of wine that I'm picking up tomorrow... she's wanting to keep ~100 bottles on hand due to threat of lockdown. I think she's jealous of my ~150-175 bottle whiskey stores.

Sorry, my verb tense is bad there.  It's certainly under consideration.  Was just pointing out we do on a normal week provide gloves considering she would potentially have some exposure at this point from prior visits.

I'm getting lots of these questions myself.  Would short term disability kick in if employees are quarantined and can't go to work, no matter if sick or not?
Not likely. Generally you have to meet your plans definition of disability to receive STD benefits.

JFC, our client is essentially the city of San Francisco and they just sent out an email saying they will consider temporary work from home for certain employees.  You have to fill out this 5 page form detailing out what you will be working on, when, what your home work conditions are like, and it has to be signed by 4 supervisors.  What a waste of time.  Do you trust people you hire or not?

Cmon GB, this is what we were trying to avoid by stocking up! Need steady shuke video diary updates while on lockdown.

Anyone have a link to an updated graph on where various countries are trending related to Italy on a day by day / week by week basis?

Anecdotal evidence from friends with kids in college - as expected, they are excited by the likelihood of a school shut-down, currently planning trips to Colorado and Florida to take advantage of the time off.

Felt like an idiot being at the grocery store at 6am this morning.  From reports I've heard, I'm glad I stocked up.

Scenario I’m facing. My buddy’s wife cuts my hair and I have an appointment tonight with her. Buddy just told me he’s been off work the past two days with flu like symptoms.  Do I cancel the hair cut?

Had breakfast with the guy Saturday so I could be screwed anyway. 😷
cancel the haircut, venmo her the $.  In a few weeks time, go back and get your pre-paid haircut

A great thing about this community is being able to come here and be lighthearted posting about stuff.  This includes humor which is just as valid a coping mechanism as anything else out there.  This thread to date has been a great mix of humor and information and it's been working great.  This is such a weird take.
It’s beyond weird; it’s a complete misunderstanding of human condition, needs, and interactions.  I’d dare say those who are most worried are those who need and appreciate light humor the most.   In fact I’ve seen exactly one “person” (quotes due to faceless mod) express concern about humor in the entirety of this thread.  That person is on an island with this thinking.

We have a little over 100 rolls in the house - 6 people, let's say 1/3 roll a day??  I'm going through 2 rolls a day so I got almost 2 months worth.  Very rough math but I feel pretty good on the TP front.  I've also got about 60-70 beers.  Liquor is another story - I may need to dig deep and just drink the last of the gin, vodka, bitters, moonshine and cinnamon whiskey - if I get desperate.  I do have some McCallans 15 year on hand but no rye, no bourbon at the moment.

Exactly. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

And now that we're connected more than ever with people tweeting pictures of the empty toilet paper aisle, it's accelerated even more.

We need a google drive sheet, everyone track their per day square use.

I woke up my wife and we went last night at midnight. I knew that the events of yesterday would wake up all of the less informed people and causing a rush to the stores today.

Yup, you can tell me not to post yoga pants threads or political posts, that's easy.  You can't change my basic nature of using humor in most of my interactions.
