I completely agree with this.

I think the hoarding is ridiculous, but the other extreme is the "risk is low" people. It's like their either have no idea what is happening in Italy, or they aren't bothered by it happening here too. And it will.
We can now add Spain and France to the list of countries to serve as examples.

France  and Spain are closing restaurants, cafes, cinemas, etc effective tonight. All commercial activity.

What "could" happen here. While I do think things will get much worse, I still am trying to hold out hope that things won't get as bad here.
I hope so too.

But logically looking at our government's lack of basic comprehension and preparation for this, and the resulting current state we're now in - I expect us to track Italy very closely.

We as Americans have it pretty bad right now, but what my friends describe is pure chaos.  Even in the best of times, Italy is backwards in a lot of ways.  Stores in many areas still close midday for 3 hours for example.  Many people have college sized dorm fridges for an entire family and shop daily, many at open air markets.  Most depend on tourism.  I won’t be able to make it over this year, my September trip and cruise to Greece we are going to have to postpone.  When i return in 2021, i expect a barren wasteland in all honestly.
Until there's a coronavirus vaccine, or the virus has run roughshod over the earlthy population, there won't be a ton of tourism or hope for folks.

I just found an article about Wegmans. From:https://www.northcentralpa.com/news/local/wegmans-giant-stores-temporarily-reducing-store-hours-in-middle-of/article_fd36e8f6-6590-11ea-bb92-1b4b697c4245.html

So they as well did it to recover from hoarders.

It's ridiculous to suggest that people should turn to hoarding because stores may reduce hours, when store reduce hours to recover from hoarding.
I can’t read every post in this thread. I’m not suggesting anything, I must’ve missed that. I just thought you didn’t believe they were cutting back their hours lol

Stocked up on wine and beer while briefly in Daytona Beach this morning. Publix was a ####show at 7:30 am back near Tampa.

My wife and I just went out to get ice cream. Things seem "normal". People are out, restaurants have cars in the parking lots, etc.  Good.

Even though they canceled the bar crawl for St Pats, there certainly seemed a lot of people out and about for it  in Charlotte as I returned from mulchquest.

When we came back from Positano last year, it was our 7th time there. We discussed the possibility that it might be our last since we're kind of winding down vacations. Now, realistically, that might have been our last time. I have an Italian client that I've been trying to communicate with but I think they're giving me a rosy story, saying things aren't bad and they're all doing well just to make me feel comfortable that they will stay in business. All I really want is to speak honestly with them and try to help but they are staying confident so I don't push.

My mom and stepfather (in their 70s) went to the library yesterday!  Other than the gym, a cruise ship, or Capella's dad's orgy, I can't think of a worse place for them to go.
Disagree. Its never crowed and if you so much as cough, you get a bunch of dirty looks. Bring some hand sanitizer and keep your five foot separation, you should be okay. I was considering that might be a relatively safe place to spend some time.

SE PA - Philly burbs..   multiple counties on 'lockdown' by governor..   yet Red Lobster, Chilis, and Applebbees parking lots were packed on my way home from work yesterday

Proactive from our Governor despite relatively few cases so far:

Nick Stevens

@NickStevensHSOT

BREAKING: Gov. Roy Cooper has announced he is closing all NC K-12 public schools across the state until at least Mar. 30, due to coronavirus pandemic. He is also issuing an executive order to stop mass gatherings of more than 100 people -- making it mandatory.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem "good" at all.  We're watching European countries getting ravaged by this and making the same mistakes which will likely show itself here in just a couple of weeks.

I hope so too.

I don't say things are going perfectly but I'm happy with the overall response on all levels so far. I hope it holds. But then again, I've always been an optimist. This will surely test that.

The  percentage of the population that refuses to participate in the social distancing will determine  the degree of how effective it is. In other words, the more people behave "normal" the less effective it will be... which will lead to mandatory quarantines.

Katrina permanently changed my expectations for how our government would handle a large scale disaster.

My faith in our current government leaders is far lower.

I can't even find a way to express how much this will likely dwarf Katrina.

Your entire family averages two eggs a day? Wow. That being said, safe to assume you went out and bought 500 eggs then? Ten times what you needed seems to be the minimum going rate for the average American right now.
You've chosen a very peculiar hill to defend.

Right before Easter...

Imagine how depressing it would be to know that doomsday is upon us, and that people choose to eat one of their final meals at ####### Red Lobster.
Can't remember if I posted but I bought all premium meats from the butcher. If I'm going to die I'm getting some good meals in. I'm not eating hotdogs. Except Nathan's which I bought a couple packs of.

Thanks to irrational, self-absorbed doosh-nozzles that are artificially creating unnecessary shortages by hoarding things like eggs, no. Which is kind of the entire point. Fortunately eggs aren't even remotely a necessity so it's no big deal, other than confirming my opinion that, in general, people suck.
Actually, for finacially challenged folk, eggs are about your best food/nutrition bang for the buck. Maybe they want to make sure they can feed their family for a month and only have fifty bucks? We have an obscene number of poor in this country.

Everything is normal right up until it's not.
My father got shipped out to Italy for WWII in a region where there hadn't been any fighting and life was very happy go lucky. He and his buddies spent the time wining and dining the ladies and having a grand old time. And then one day the sheet hit the fan. Heavy fighting broke out, guys were coming back missing limbs or not coming back at all, and it was all hands on deck. He was one of 2-3 soldiers from his unit that made it out alive. Medical supplies got cut off, their doctor got killed, and it was a total cluster. Went from being a really fun time to total carnage in minutes with an extended stretch of life or death thereafter.

IMO, lots of people in the US haven't seen a lot of bad things and have been pretty sheltered their whole lives. That could change really soon and people will have a lot more to worry about than Starbucks messing up their order, breaking a nail, or not finding a parking spot at the mall during the holidays.

Ugh.  Neighbor girl, my daughters BFF, just rang the doorbell, wanting to play.

Sorry, kid.  Not today.  Not until we can get our plans in place and we can make sure your parents are taking this as serious as we are.

I think our policy for the next couple of weeks is this:  they can play, but only outside.  Bike rides, walks, etc are all good.  Probably no to the playground.  No going inside, and no shared food/drinks.  And when you come inside, immediate hand wash, shower, and change of clothes.  Absolutely no hugs (probably the most important bit).

At the end of the day, its not just about us - the neighbor girl has elderly grandparents a couple houses down and her mom is recovering from cancer.  My kids are currently coughing a little bit - Dr says sinus infections, no fever....but obviously no corona test so who knows.

ETA:  also loosening up on screen time restrictions. These days, I'm actually encouraging my kids to be on their phones and not playing with their friends.  My 5th grader had spent pretty much the whole day in a group video chat with her classmates.

:(

I think you have to go back to WWII to think of the last time our country was severely tested at a national level.

9/11 woke everyone up, but daily life did not substantially change.

I hope the underlying American spirit and backbone is still there at a large scale.

I think you are handling this excellently.

Social norms are going to be forced to evolve very quickly.

People kept stealing the TP out of the bathrooms at Walmart’s here, so now they have attendants that will dole it out to people when you go in. I have seen different amounts ranging from 2-6 squares. Dollar General had no TP either. TP our pretty much everywhere by this point in our area.
I swear I dont live by Anarchy!!

I saw my neighbor walking with a new dog this morning. He looked so friendly and wanted to be pet but I knew not to and could tell she was hoping I wouldn't. Poor dogs not being pet. Got me thinking how many rescue dogs won't be getting adopted for a while.

What exactly is the plan once the 2-week to one month national quarantine ends?  I’m on board with it and I get the purpose for it, but I get the feeling that there’s a ton of people who think that’s it, back to normal on April 1st.
