*** OFFICIAL *** COVID-19 CoronaVirus Thread. Fresh epidemic fears as child pneumonia cases surge in Europe after China outbreak. NOW in USA (14 Viewers)

I’ve not really had many predictions like that.  A number here have sounded the warning, but we’ve always hoped it would get better.  Now that we have data, it’s a no-brainer that the USA healthcare system is going to be in deep trouble in 2 weeks.

The thing is, we don’t really know what our soft quarantines will do for the doubling rate.

Most countries seemed to have a doubling rate of 4 days before quarantines.  Italy has had a pretty solid quarantine (but not China/SK level) for 3 weeks and their doubling rate is down to around 10 to 11 days.  That STILL means the numbers double 3 times a month and would put total infections at a billion in 3.5 months.

I think we can all agree that the USA has a softer quarantine than Italy, so where will we be in a few weeks? Hard to say as our data is still incomplete but behind Italy, I’m almost positive.
The only thing in our favor is that the US is vast compared to Italy so the perhaps the leadership of the next state in line will start to understand the seriousness of the spread faster and lock everything down earlier. Hard to have much faith that will happen when the states become more likely to listen to the federal leadership as we move in from the coasts.

Keep New Yorkers in NY

Rhode Island Police to Hunt Down New Yorkers Seeking Refuge

March 27, 2020, 5:14 PM EDT

(Bloomberg) --

Rhode Island police began stopping cars with New York plates Friday. On Saturday, the National Guard will help them conduct house-to-house searches to find people who traveled from New York and demand 14 days of self-quarantine.

“Right now we have a pinpointed risk,” Governor Gina Raimondo said. “That risk is called New York City.”

New York is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., on Friday reporting a total of 44,000 cases.

Rhode Island has just over 200, and it has begun an aggressive campaign to keep the virus out and New Yorkers contained, over objections from civil liberties advocates.

Raimondo, a Democrat, said she had consulted lawyers and said while she couldn’t close the border, she felt confident she could enforce a quarantine.

Seaside Retreat

Many New Yorkers have summer houses in Rhode Island, especially in tony Newport, and the governor said the authorities would be checking there.

“Yesterday I announced and today I reiterated: Anyone coming to Rhode Island in any way from New York must be quarantined,” the governor said. “By order. Will be enforced. Enforceable by law.”

Raimondo signed an executive order Thursday that applies to anyone who has been in New York during the past two weeks and through at least April 25. It doesn’t apply to public health, public safety, or health-care workers.

National Guard members will be stationed at the T.F. Green airport, Amtrak train stations and at bus stops. The citizen-soldiers will be following up with people at local residences. The maximum penalty for not complying: a fine of $500 and 90 days in prison.

Anecdotal confirmation. Buddy of mine fled NY to his RI home and today the NG came knocking. Strange days.

funny enough, the day the US/Canada border was closed, we were notified there would be a major announcement about it at noon...

and of course, Trump live tweets the decision about 1-2hrs before we announced it, like the ###### he is.

It was at that point that I knew the severity of the issue in North America. And I also knew, 100%, it was a Canadian decision to close it off. No way the US had any reason to close it off. None.

It was the first Canandian "flex" I think Ive ever seen... aside from legalizing weed, but that doesnt compare

(eta: it was later confirmed to me it was in fact a CDN decision by another friend who also works w the gov't, but closer to ottawa)
lol... total bro move. Surely claims Canada was dumped, not him.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, offered Canadians encouraging news at the federal minister’s update.

While over 5,153 Canadians are unwell, only 7 per cent have been hospitalized, 3 per cent are critically ill and 1 per cent of cases are fatal.

Tam confirmed there is some ‘cautious optimism’ coming out of British Columbia, with a slight flattening of the curve and reduced growth of cases. The country will look closely at the province's cases and curve to confirm what method of distancing is most effective in coming weeks.

The optimism coming out of British Columbia doesn’t mean that social distancing should come to an end.

“This should spur us to keep up with our new habit of social distancing. We need to stay the course,” Tam urged.

The important thing is to stay in your bubble and not burst someone else’s by getting within 2-metres of distance of them.

Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Howard Njoo reiterated Tam’s message when asked about how long social distancing will continue across the country.

‘We can’t predict what will happen in the future but there have been encouraging signs. The number of cases is decreasing in British Columbia, or even in Canada. It's important we stay the course and we not give up.”

So what?  You can get out and walk and stay away from others. I didn't think it looked bad at all.

ETA:  Just want to add, sorry didn't mean to come across ###-holish.  Just tired of every piece of news bad and so many "look how doomed we all are!", and "America is so screwed...we suck!!"

I should start another thread for this but I'll just put it here. Looking for some suggestions.

I've always had sinus/allergy issues. I don't know if it's pollen etc or food related. I've never really done much about it.

Staying at home for the last couple weeks has really ramped things up. I get stuffed up, post nasal drip, swollen feeling tonsils, lump I throat etc. It sucks. I think maybe worse after I eat? Could be dairy, wheat, who knows.

Been trying Claritan.. doesn't seem to help. Been using NyQuil at night. Took some DayQuil now. Helps a little. Hard to sleep when stuffed up and try to move down throat but doesn't seem to budge.

Just ordered one of those Navage things. Have large tonsils and tried to get them out years ago and insurance wouldn't cover. Got a CPAP last year and really didn't like it so haven't been using it...another issue but related.

Would really like to see an ENT and see if I could get some relief at some point but not even going to try with COVID going on.

So besides trying the Navage any other suggestions? Oh I also bought an air cleaner for the room I sleep in and need to get that set up. Also need to do some.more whole home dusting etc.

Wondering I guess if there is other otc meds I should be trying as well. Any other suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
Have you tried nasal saline rinse or a neti pot? That CURED my seasonal allergies, and I used to take Claritin, etc. daily for it.

Just had a two+ hour phone conversation with an old friend followed by a two hour conversation with another old friend. Like being back in high school. We each loved Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and hated The Irishman. We wondered why we aren't playing poker together online. Can play private, play money tournaments on PokerStars and then paypal the winners. We should do that here, no?  Somebody set that up.
I’m all in.

As you can see from the google drive, the good news is that our worldwide doubling rate has dropped to just over 5 days when it was 4 for almost 6 weeks.

i can literally throw a baseball and hit the US from where I live - NY (if i had a good enough arm)... sad to think that just mere feet away from an absolute shambles, with no public health care available.

unfortuntely for me, i am deemed an essential service at work, so still doing mon-fri 8-4s, and seeing the effect on our country as well, albeit on a much smaller scale, but w health care.

the only thing that really irks me is seeing how non-chalant so many americans seem to be about this... of course, i get the population gap, but it seems so much of your country is really not "getting it" still..

why? seriously... why?
  I have several buddies in Toronto and Montreal telling me it's just as much of a ####show up there, high horse guy

Ordered Olive Garden online last night.  Went to pick it up in their parking lot with an estimated 40 minute wait.  After 2 hours, I got half my order.  I felt bad for the server who came out to deliver it to me.  She was so apologetic.  I didn't have the heart to demand the other half of my order, so I just asked for enough of whatever they did have to feed my family.  Lots of people still getting take out from restaurants, but the roads were empty otherwise.  BTW, I am in Connecticut.

A quarantine will not be necessary. Full details will be released by CDC tonight. Thank you!
Wouldn't be close to legal either

Have you tried regular use of Flonase?  do you have GERD? its not a food allergy.
Are you taking your allergy medicine at night? It helps. Have you tried sudafed? There's a reason it's still on the market, it works.

I mean, Western NY isn't really in shambles......yet.  It's not NYC-level bad here.

We all have Canada to thank for forcing China to quit the coverup.

i dont recall saying it isnt having an effect here, or that some aren't sticking to protocol

but a ####show based on what? numbers or opinion?

I ordered Panera free delivery. 3 sandwiches. Should come with 3 bags of chips. Got 2. If you've ever had Panera brand chips, you'd feel for me.

Good. Strong travel advisories should be in effect. All goods, commerce, etc. should continue. Driving or flying to see family, no. This should be self-evident by now but apparently people need to be told. Stay in place for as long as you can, only go out to get essentials, extremely social distance. Go for a walk if you need to. Why it’s been difficult for people to do this is absolutely baffling.

Having said that, governments have been way too slow to react so it’s hard to just blame individuals. Number of days into New York mandating only essential workers go out and everyone else stay in place order: 8 days. In retrospect, that is absolutely absurd. Had this gone into place March 1st could you imagine the difference? It’s heartbreaking.

Just found out some great folks (even if they are LSU fans) in my wife's mardi gras organization are dealing with this virus.  Doesnt sound good either as he has some other health issues.  They were in the process of moving back home to Louisiana and this virus got a hold of him.  I'm not one to flippantly put this stuff out there but if any of you could spare anything in these uncertain times, it would be much appreciated.  Such a great family with 2 fantastic college age kids.  Hitting much closer to home now....

Man, you guys are awesome...thank you to those that helped.

My fear is that we are going to see more and more of these types of posts and I can only hope if it ever hits any of you/us that we remain in a position to help.  I've already told my wife how to post in here if it hits me.

Please, keep the politics out of here so we can all see posts like these if and when this thing hits close to home for some of us.

If the feds can't do it, then how can the state do it?
March 28, 3:30 p.m.: Gov. Ron DeSantis said travel restrictions from “hot zones” allowed authorities to stop a man who flew to Jacksonville from New York that previously tested positive for COVID-19.

DeSantis said the man was taken to a hospital directly from the airport after he was identified at a screening checkpoint.

Though DeSantis does not have the authority to shut down interstate travel, he did institute an executive order that requires anyone traveling from New York to Florida to quarantine for 14 days.

The governor also set up a check point on I-10 to screen people coming into the state from Louisiana. He is looking to set up a similar check point on I-95.

Can you imagine getting an antibody test and it showing you had it a ways back and never realized it/no symptoms.  You'd feel like a god, going everywhere with a spring in your step.

"Why yes I will book this $29 flight to NYC.  $129 to Seattle?  Sure...absolutely."
What’s the latest on an antibody test?

Anyone know?

Not a legal expert at all.  I remember reading some thing about even how NC had to word things specifically to avoid legal challenges.  We're in a brave new world.

There was a video out there about riots inbetween two different Chinese states with people trying to show up to work.  That is how I could see these type of federally enforced quarantines going.

provinces are in charge here of the issue, w the feds having more than once flexed using the Emergency Act if the provinces can't get it done.

Would local news be interested in sending out a camera crew?
OMFG! My neighborhood block party made the news! Fox News Boston sent a  crew to cover the party. But they spun it as a great thing! They praised the neighbor for raising the spirits of the neighborhood and encouraged people to do similar things in their own communities. They showed people dancing and smiling and said this is exactly what we all need to be doing, and we need more of that.

People in town are all over FB either saying it was the best thing ever or they are so sad they missed it. People are actually asking when the next one will be. I. Am. Speechless.

The police had to break up a 50 person house party in Ewing, NJ last night.....in a 550 square foot apartment.  They hired a DJ.

I'm pretty much ready to mail in the summer at this point.  Too many #######s out there.

Would love to hear an update on this. Antibody testing will be one of the ways we get out of this, along with effective treatments and a vaccine of course.

Those who get this virus and get over the illness will be our front line leaders to truly help us with coming out of the abyss. They’ll be our warriors.

Not to go too far political and all, but Canada is a completely different beast given its size and population density.  You really only have to control a few large cities.

Perhaps they just misunderstand the phrase "We're all in this together."

The same people that misunderstand the word "literally".
