Yep, it’s so sad.  They release the news on that drug after hours so they can all make their money after hours and all the regular folks get nothing. There’s no reason to believe that this is anything other than a blatant money grab.

Technically, they didn't release anything. The story 'broke' from a reporter at STATnews, Adam Feuerstein. 

Her comments were made this week during a video discussion about the trial results with other University of Chicago faculty members. The discussion was recorded and STAT obtained a copy of the video.

In a statement Thursday, Gilead said: “What we can say at this stage is that we look forward to data from ongoing studies becoming available.”

Gilead had said to expect results for its trial involving severe cases in April. Mullane said during her presentation that data for the first 400 patients in the study would be “locked” by Gilead Thursday, meaning that results could come any day.

I think the reopening plan is reasonable. It has always been about not overwhelming the medical community and that seems to have been achieved. Time to slowly open up, understanding that there will be some deaths along the way. It is inevitable. But society needs to start coming back. NYC will be a long way off but many other parts of the country can try to restart. I'm excited by the idea and happy for the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have no idea. Possible Gilead fed it to Feuerstein, sure. But on the whole, I think Feurstein is an ethical guy, I've followed him for a while.

Let me flip the script: why release the video immediately ahead of the news of the data coming out anyway? What would Gilead have to gain? I suppose there are stock holders (and more likely options traders) who could potentially gain, but the stakeholders themselves, University of Chicago & Gilead, will be announcing the results very soon anyway.

It is a huge if. And why wouldn't anyone expect anything other than doctors being swayed by their own personal biases. There are doctors who say we never should have stayed at home in the first place. So when these criteria are met, I'm sure the media will be able to drudge up a few who don't think it's safe. But the extremes will always be there for every side. In the end, we have to go with some standard. And the standards set today are by doctors it seems the vast majority of people have respected to this point. Why stop now?

Probably just me, but exchanges about federal guidelines are exhausting. Of course guidelines are great. But now that its decided we’re the People’s Front of Judea (Life of Brian reference), why spend another second debating words? Let’s become better able to test and trace those with the disease, and manufacture PPEs and other necessities to keep vital medical professionals & food/grocery industry safe. 

It would be energizing to wake up to a headline to the effect of ‘1000 furloughed Medical Professionals Redeployed to Ramp Up Testing.’ Seems our main obstacle is scale of needs; e.g. intending for everyone to wear masks as part of an exit strategy, while unable to even meet hospital needs. With a large number of furloughed, could they help overcome various scale challenges?

My 7-year old boy has had this odd cough for the past 2 weeks.  Like he's trying to clear his throat or something.  No fever.  Took him to doctor as they thought it could be croup.  Nope.  Supposedly fighting off a sinus infection - his first ever.  Doc recommended allergy meds like Zyrtec and Flonase... and an antibiotic, which we chose to hold off on giving him for a couple days to see if he could fight it off on his own.

Anyways, called in the prescription and the pharmacy department girl was nice enough to go grab the Zyrtec and Flonase from the store so I could just drive through.  Flonase was $31   ... thought of going back after driving through to return it, but it's on my way home from work so I decided to return it (with receipt, of course) the next day (yesterday).  Was told by masked employee then masked manager that they were not accepting any returns.  Wut?  Apparently there's a sign on the front door (which I obviously didn't see since I drove through) and it's on the receipt (the mile-long receipt that no one ever looks at).  Me in my mask... everyone in masks, plastic sheet inbetween us... so weird.  Anyways...

Guess I should have asked for pricing beforehand, had no idea Flonase was so expensive.  So now I'm stuck with it... manager said "after this is all over you can probably return it". 

Lame?  Or am I being short-sighted?

Most stores currently have no returns on anything right now. Started with an anti-hoarding policy but quickly switched to a public safety issue.

As someone mentioned, many pharmacies/states have laws against return prescriptions after they leave the pharmacy. In AZ, the only way we can take anything back is if it’s a major mistake like wrong medication or wrong patient. From your story, they weren’t the prescription meds but the OTC versions, so it would like go under the general store policy.

They should have been more upfront with the price before charging your card but in the current state of mind we’re in, there’s not much you can do.
 

Consider yourself lucky it is only $31.00., My 15 year old daughter had her psychiatrist on Monday via teledoc. He was going to call in a refill for Abilify--she told him what pharmacy we use. My wife talked to him and told him what pharmacy to call it in to.  Did his office do it right? Nope, they called it in to another place my insurance won't cover. I tried to call the Dr.  and apparently they are only using a call center now to forward calls to the office, so I can't talk to anyone. Their physical office is closed due to the virus.

My daughter has two pills left and they are not being responsive--so I said forget it, we will just pay cash for it.  Get this---$1,100 for 30 pills is what the pharmacy quoted me.  I asked about the generic version and it was $850 for 30 pills. I have put in a call to her PCP to see if they can authorize something for us, but more than likely, my daughter will be without her meds. 

As already mentioned - GoodRX.com is your best bet on generic drugs. Prices can be get ridiculously low. You’re probably looking at $20 for a 30 day supply. It helps a lot of customers out but not the pharmacy. We generally lose money on those prescriptions.

The vaporization process of H2O2 is actually done at a relatively low temperature via specialized cassettes in a chamber designed for that process within a machine that in some cases has a number of sterilization settings based on the material being sterilized. Those machines can cost a couple hundred K. I would not attempt that at home.

Costco charges $38 for 3 bottles of Flonase. They also have a store brand that comes with 5 bottles for about $25 (I think).

In addition, there are no economic studies which show opening the country sooner is better. This means that it is in the best interest of everyone, not just the affluent, to stay the course.

The govt has just started an unprecedented stimulus program, that while not perfect, is pretty darn good. I have seen articles about huge food lines (thanks @Mr Anonymous) but I have not seen any articles about families who can’t feed themselves.

You are thinking of the country as an aggregate. Not as individual people. There is no way that any lock down at all is best for any individual people. We are all hurt by this, even the wealthy, just in lesser degrees. But putting the country as an aggregate ahead of the needs of the individual is not the slam dunk decision you make it sound like. It may be the textbook decision in some classroom somewhere, but real life isn't a classroom. It's a much harder decision in real life.

Agreed and I'm not saying there are any perfect choices. The reason I bring it up this morning is because I think we'll start seeing a push to open things up quicker than medical officials would prefer. Some of that will come from people with political reasons to do so (apparently there is an idea that this is being dragged on to hurt the current President's re-election chances), but some of the push will come from people that will soon get into desperate straits if this continues much longer, even with an extra $600 in their UI check. Let's not assume everyone pushing these things are doing so for political reasons.

Speak for your self. I could not handle 2-3 more months off. I am not even sure I can handle what has happened already. I have yet to see any unemployment money and those that have say the extra $600.00 a check is not there. My opinion on what I can handle may change if I see the unemployment money I was told I would get.

Speak for your self. I could not handle 2-3 more months off. I am not even sure I can handle what has happened already. I have yet to see any unemployment money and those that have say the extra $600.00 a check is not there. My opinion on what I can handle may change if I see the unemployment money I was told I would get.

Good post. I think we all need to understand we’re all in different situations. It’s okay to disagree, but we need to try and respect everyone’s opinion. Nobody has the correct answer on how to properly handle this situation.

Great post. While some are thinking of areas like NYC others are in areas where it makes sense to start planning to get back to work and adapt to the new normal. Good news is the world isn’t ending and we will adapt as we always do, be safe but don’t buy into the excessive fear spreading and keep positive.
