Rationalization: derby vs. quotaThe series' first season was shot during the final year of the derby style king crab fishery. The subsequent seasons have been set after the change to a quota system as part of a process known as "rationalization". Under the old derby style, a large number of crews competed with each other to catch crab during a restrictive time window. Under the new Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) system, established owners, such as those shown on the series, have been given quotas which they can fill at a more relaxed pace. In theory, it is intended to be safer, which was the main rationale for the change in the fishing rules. The transition to the quota system was also expected to increase the value of crab, by limiting the market of available crab. An influx of foreign crab negated some of these gains during the 2006 season.[9] The rationalization process put many crews out of work as the owners of many small boats found their assigned quotas too small to meet operating expenses; during the first season run under the IFQ system, the fleet shrank from over 250 boats to around 89 mostly larger boats with high quotas.[10]

yeah, this guy is a real peach. "EW Are blue crabs hard to get?

Derrick Ray My pat answer to everybody on that is I’ve had an illustrious Bering Sea crab career. I’ve been running boats out here since I was 23 years old. I’m the best of the best, and I’m not going to fail in 172 countries on cable TV, and reruns for 20 years. I will guarantee you that. We will catch those crab. There’s lots of room, lots of places to look. If I had a nickel for every time I heard somebody say, `Sig Hansen didn’t catch them last year,’ I’d be a #######’ millionaire and I wouldn’t have to go do this."

oof

Well, they were catching them, just not in great numbers. Who knows how they would've done if they stayed out there longer.

They should hire Edgar to Captain the CM.
Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't get Andy or Jonathan from the Time Bandit to do it. They have the respect of the crew and wouldn't have taken any #### (Engineer should've been kicked off before they even left dock.)
I think that was where the whole trip went downhill. When Steve did that, what was Derek supposed to do? If he stays quiet and does nothing, he loses control and respect, but if he's hard, like he was, he alienates the crew before even leaving the dock. Steve put him in a no-win situation. In retrospect, I think his decision to go fro blue crab was a bad choice. Not that it was the wrong choice. Just that, the situation he was in, he should have know that he needed to get on crab ASAP, and help build the morale on the ship before taking a risk like hunting blue crab.
I think from reading some articles that the CM had leased their quote of Red Crab to another vessel.
Yeah, I read that too. But the way the Harris boys were acting, I was confused on what they wanted to do. Just quit fishing altogether? Could they have bought other red crab quota? The whole thing is just really cloudy.
Don't know why they had the CM which is one of the largest boats in the fleet (gas and larger tanks) go for blue crabs which is less numbers and much further away from the port.

Probably the most entertaining After the catch episode last night. Josh Harris doesn't know how to argue when put on the spot. Wonder how things would have gone down if they actually had a decent blue crab season. They explained that they had to go for blue crab.

First time seeing the show since last season other than sporadic moments. The Harris boys looked like they were out of their league from parts of the shows I have seen as well as on After the Catch. The captain, while blunt, did say things that were accurate. The other captains did not want to fully back him due to Phil's legacy and friendship, so it seemed, but they knew what he was saying was correct. The Harris boys have lots to grow and hopefully they do. What is up with that younger captain who was always yelling at the producer? He seemed to be having fun with him unlike the Harris boys and the Captain, but how young is that guy and did he run a good boat? Tough to see Freddy on another boat. Did he have to take a demotion in pay or anything?

I thought Freddy said that he's been settling for less pay on the CM for years because of loyalty to the Harris' and the family comraderie. I think he'll be making much more on the Wizard. Although Keith can be a doosh at times.

The Rambling Rose Captain is 29 I believe. Freddy just left it at, "It was time to move on. The guys on the CM are my family and I love them, but..." Sig made a good point. It is the captain's job to worry about the cost of fuel and supply, etc. It just seems like Derrick wanted control of the boat without having to deal with the owners on the boat who were the deckhands. Not a good combination

In most cases, captain is the owner. But seeing as how the CM went over their budget after just a couple days of fishing, there's nothing Derrick could've really done. The CM budget was just too low.

My wife's quote right after the whole Josh/Derek exchange, "Wow, After the Catch is WAY better than After the Rose."

Wow Edgar pulled the trigger.
I'm going to bet that he is back for king crab season next year. These guys that fish for 20 some odd years, what is he going to do at home? He's going to drive himself crazy IMO unless he finds something to really dig into.
Well I called this partially right. I wasn't expecting him to angle for the Captain's chair.
He likes to be paid, but hates the hard work in the bitter cold. If I could go out and work for King crab and sit in the chair, yet be paid for Opelio* I'd be game. Truth is that even if Edgar is not working fully on deck, he is an invaluable asset to the Northwestern. We see a lot of that last night. I see another relationship like the Time Bandit where the brothers are both on the boat. However, Sig won't give up the wheel. Edgar will deal with the engine and maybe work the crane, but I doubt he does much grunt work from here on out.

yea I thought that was the lamest part of the show. Basically said, "I'll do king crab, but once it gets really crappy outside I want to be in the wheel house for opies."

Do you blame him? Doesn't he own a portion of the boat with his brother? It's about time he gets to take a shot.

after 22 years he's earned it

Is anyone watching tonight? Is the audio on Discovery messed up? (Echoing) All my other channels are working fine.

ETA: Commercials sound fine as well.

Every time I want to give Captain Keith the benefit of the doubt, he reverts back to being a gigantic ###hole. Him shoving around the cameraman for not getting him coffee (in last week's "After the Catch episode) and #####ing out the greenhorn for supposedly having a bad attitude when rest of his crewmates defended him makes this guy the worst captain to work for on the show by a mile.

On the Cornelia Marie, did those two young guys' father die or something? They made brief mention of it one time when they were on camera.

Don't forget him going off because Lynn supposedly rolled his eyes. It's really not surprising that Keith burns through so many greenhorns. I'm still shocked that Freddie went to work for him.

IIRC, you can make better money working for him because he has a bigger boat. You just have to accept the fact that the only way to get along with him is to treat him like a god. Looking back, I think Jonathon showed remarkable restraint when he only knocked Keith on his butt.

Agreed about Keith. The comment about treating him like God is spot on. I especially dislike how he has to point his finger at everyone. That's pretty demeaning. The only guys that last on his crew are spineless yes men.

I think he runs a rotating crew where one guy is always sleeping. That combined with the big boat makes for big money. Screw the money, though. Given the other stresses of that job having an ahole boss of that magnitude wouldn't be worth the extra coin.

The "rookies" are doing well. Seabrooke and that other boat seem to do ok. LOL at that captain thinking the prop fell off. Maybe that's normal. Maybe it's just best to expect the worst out there. But I was impressed that he was the captain/engineer on his own.

Have all the After The Catches recorded but haven't watched them yet.

What happened with the prop? I turned away and never caught the phone call or whatever happened to it.

Prop was still there. The control cable snapped. Easy fix.

Is it me or are the two dudes running the Time Bandit the biggest dorks?

Favorite moment from last night's show was Al, the captain of Cornelia Maria, exlplaining to to Josh/Jake? how to educate a crew-member. Compliment, educate then funny anecdote. Before he's done complimenting, the crew member is totally dismissing hi.

Keith may be a #### but these guys only listen to aggression. They are so tired they don't want the captain, up in his warm booth, to try and "handle" them.

Previews for next week show him going on a rampage again.Previews also showed Sig asleep at the wheel but the voiceover said "one captain gets knocked out".

 They're the best captains. They don't kill their crew, or scream at the top of their lungs over the slightest thing. They go out there and catch crab (and rather quickly) and have a fun time doing it.

After watching that bit, it made me think that the captain they ran off provided a necessary service to those two(namely a kick in the ###). Now, with Al they seem much more wiling to listen and learn.

I had to turn off After the Catch when Josh started to ask the guy that owns 21 fishing boats what he would do to if a captain was out of line. He did so just after he apologizes for the way he acted last week. He was acting selfish again, right after he apologizes for being selfish. He was trying to gain gratification and support from a respected owner on his reason for how he handled the situation during King Crab season.

Disagree to an extent. The other boats work just fine or better without their captains being an aggressive DB.

I maybe wrong, but, his name is Tony Lara.

He appears to really have his #### together.
Josh and Jake need to worry about just being competent before they worry about their "legacy." Right now their "legacy" is of two unskilled punks who only got work because of their dad. They are way too caught up in being Phil Harris' kids. It is pathetic. I'm sure some of that is editing but still. Just learn to be competent. Then worry about being average. And so on... No wonder Freddie left.

When Josh was talking to Freddy and Freddy said "I'm sorry I'm not there" Josh responded with "No worries, you need to make money".. :bs: He didn't go to the other boat for the money.. He went to the other boat to get away from the Drama that you and your brother Jake bring to the ship.

It's tough enough out there fishing, who needs the added drama those two bring?

Just watched after the catch. Thought that was amusing too. After getting shut down by all the other captains last time who said Derrick was a good captain. And Josh acting there all smug because the owner said you replace captain. Dumb###, he said you let him keep fishing even if he's in the red. But if it keeps happening, then you replace the captain. You skipped step one.

Then the kids says something like, we might have to get you back on here.....Freddie: :crickets:

I'm assuming Freddie made $0 for the last season since the boat made $0. Freddie needs to get paid. He is not up there because of the weather. He is up there to do a job and if the boat is making no money, he isn't.
