Sad, I really wanted to like this guy and his story but I don't know him from anything other than his Olympic story.

Don't buy the burglar bullspit for a minute
I buy it. Apparently the guy has a track record of paranoia about someone breaking into his place. Hell, he says in a NYT article that when he can't sleep at night, he goes to the gun range. But it sounds like he definitely broke the law, which from what I'm reading requires he be able to positively determine his life is in danger and, if possible, verbally engage an intruder before firing at them (apparently in SA, you can't just shoot intruders willy nilly the way you can here).

Given that South Africa's home invasion rate and that country's rate of murders committed by home intruders absolutely dwarfs that of the United States wouldn't that suggest that the US system might have more of a deterrent effect on home intruders than the ZA system?

No.

Last words heard were "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."
