I work at Walgreens and only make $8.25 an hour. I turn 22 next month. My boss ensures me he is trying to 'develop me' and get me where I need to be.

About a week ago he hires a Candidate off the street for a Shift Lead position.

It's an African American women who will now be making more than me and have an easier job than me.

Should I quit? Look for a new job? Apparently I'm an $8.25 and hour Stooge.

I don't have time to 'work' for a position we're handing to people off the streets. I'm sure I can talk myself into a comparable position in another company.

I've been with Walgreens 3-months and am sick to my stomach every time I see this shift lead.

I am trying to become a Certified Pharmacy Tech. I am already a Registered Pharmacy Tech but they seem reluctant to move me to the Pharmacy because it requires a $1.00 pay raise.

So I run the Photo Lab with no signs of possible promotion...

I think you should put your head down and worry about doing an excellent job at your current position for more than three months before you worry about a promotion.

Best advice I can give is figure out what you are passionate about, learn more about it than most other you know who share the passion, and start producing content around it. That or invent some new way to share stuff on the internet and sell it to Facebook.

How big a pay raise is the Shift leader position? How much more work is it? Would you get benefits?

Walgreens isn't exactly a career company, they underpay and overwork their employees from what I hear. Might be time to move on.

This guy? You expect that from this guy?

The women hired showed 'zero months' of doing an excellent job.

Why dont you keep working your present position while also looking for an opportunity to get another position in your preferred field, the Pharmacy. I assure you that you are not the first person to be told that your being "developed" only to have someone hired in over you. Happens all the time. The sooner you learn that the better.

I worked at Walgreens when I was in high school. Really enjoyed it, dated 3 different girls I met there and banged one of them upstairs in the stock room.

Not sure why you'd expect a promotion after 3 months on the job.

It's woman. I wouldn't promote you either.

You've seen her resume? You know where she came from and what experience she has? You know that she is getting paid more than you ? You know that she isn't part of a veterans job placement program? You know the boss/company motivations for hiring her?

I am going to bet she had more than 3 months of photo lab experience on her resume.

BTW I ran a photo lab back when people still actually used film. I made decent money managing it and became known as the place to take the "artsy" photos of your girlfriend/wife to be developed. Had this guy whose wife was a knock out redhead. He took extremely "artsy" pictures of her. It was like a Christmas bonus every time he came in.

Walgreens management clearly made the right choice here.

This is the more pertinent question. Who you banging at this job? If you've already gone around the world you might as well move on.

This exactly. On top of that...

1. Never quit a job until you have a new one lined up.

2. Always give two week's notice and work hard even through your last day. In other words, don't burn bridges.

3. Always seek a job that's a step above what you're currently doing. Don't move laterally unless you absolutely have to.

Just make sure the price listed on the shelf for Swedish fish matches the price that's charged at the register, or some customer will do everything in his power to destroy your career.

Go across the street and apply at CVS, they will give you that $1 raise. If you do not have a CVS across the street, wait. One is coming. Virtually any place you find a Walgreens, CVS will build one in proximity to steal their business.

ETA - my daughter worked for Walgreens before she graduated from college and my son currently works there as he is going through college. Neither viewed it as a long tem employment solution. However, my sister in law has worked there for 20+ years without any aspiration to climb the ladder to Shift Lead. I guess she is not climbing that Walgreen Corporate Ladder of Success.

Hey, i started out mopping the floors just like you guys. Soon I'll be on fries; then the grill. And pretty soon, I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in.

I type off my phone and am a College Student, get off it. I know how to type.

I'm guessing around $10.00 an hour. It's much, much less work. It requires you to tell goons like me what to do all day.

Every time I'm in a drugstore and I check out the talent, I long for those days. The retail environment is like shooting fish in a barrel.
