Mind you, Im about as excited as you can get about the Tigs so far this year. But, they are still 0-3 against Chicago and havent played any of Boston, NYY or Toronto out East. Still. 29-14 is good against anyone. :banned:

 
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The radar gun seemed stuck on 99 mph. That's what it clocked Justin Verlander's fastball at in the first inning, and that's what it still read in the ninth.

Quick and overpowering, Detroit's 6-foot-5 rookie right-hander pitched a five-hitter Monday night for his first complete game and shutout in his ninth major league start. He allowed only one runner as far as second base in leading the Tigers to an 8-0 victory, Detroit's second straight shutout and the 10th loss in a row for the Royals.

"I've never had a starting pitcher throw 99 in the ninth inning," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I've seen some closers throw 99. I've never had a starter throw 99 in the ninth inning before that I can recall."

Today was the first day since the 5-0 start that I've heard anything about the Tigers on ESPN radio. (I listen from 630-730 and 4-5 Monday through Friday) While it was only for about 30 seconds, it's a good sign that soeone is actually noticing that they are 16 FREAKIN GAMES OVER .500! Interesting to note that if they play .500 ball the rest of the way, they will hit 89 wins.

Detroit has four of the top eight ERAs for starters in the AL. :eek:

3. Mike Maroth 2.45

5. Justin Verlander 2.70

6. Kenny Rogers 2.91

8. Nate Robertson 3.02

Their worst starter, last year's ace Jeremy Bonderman, is 31st in the AL at 4.66.

There will inevitably be some drop-off, but you can't help but be excited by the Tigers prospects, this year and beyond. :thumbup:

I was at the Reds/Tigers game last Saturday.... :thumbup: Hollywood couldn't have scripted it better. I took my 8yr old daughter to her first Tigers game. Before the game even started she got a free hat, got to go onto the field for mini-clinics with some of the Tiger players, rode the baseball ferris-wheel, and I bought her a Tigers t-shirt. Then came the game itself... :clap: Tigers with a 5-2 lead into the 7th.... :pickle:

Griffey with a GRAND SLAM in the top of the 7th... :wall: :wall: :wall:

Granderson with a homer in the bottom of the 9th with 2-outs.. :pickle: :excited: :hifive:

Awesome fireworks to end the night :thumbup:

It's a trip I hope my daughter will remember forever.....

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He scares the crap out of me every time he's in there... but 14 of 15 is pretty impressive! The fact that he's had 15 save opportunities already this year - and was on the DL for a few weeks to boot is friggin' fantastic!
 
To come back from 4-0 AND 5-3 (I thought the second Grudzielanaek of the game (and year) would end the rally) was a very new type of baseball.

They only had 4 hits going into the 6th. Finished with 17 I think.

The Indians appear to have sorted out their bullpen in the last week. Betancourt came back off the DL and has given us nothing but good pitching. Danny Graves is gone. I think going into yesterday's game, the BP had only given up something like 1 run in its last 20 innings of work. They did give one up in the 10th last nite - altho it was after 4 innings of shutout ball.

Anyway, the Indians are turning it around now, and it should be an interesting weekend series with your Tigers.

Indians next 7 games: three @ Detroit and 4 home to White Sox. It's only May, but they need to go 5-2 to keep pace.And get rid of Jason Johnson and bring up Jeremy Sowers! This is a no-f'in-brainer!!!!

Take a look at the 2005 Indians thread I had going. I posted at the All-star break then that the Indians had three options:1. Trade prospects to add one more piece to get them over the hump. In this scenario, Shapiro is giving the 2005 edition of the tribe its best shot.

2. The 2005 Indians were actually in a very good position to be a seller. Both Kevin Millwood and Bob Wickman were VERY tradable commodities. In this scenario, you either believed they could not win the world series or make the playoffs (depending on your goals). Here, you are getting something out of the 2005 season, and probably making the 2006+ editions of the Indians a LOT stronger.

3. I said at the last all-star break that the only losing scenario for the Indians was to stand pat. By doing nothing, they are not only not giving the 2005 edition its best chance to win, but the 2006+ editions will not be as strong as they could be.

Shapiro chose option 3. I ripped him for it then, I scoffed at the notion he was "exec of the year" and the Indians are going to pay the price because of that mistake.

The Indians are NOT a major market club. They cannot afford to stand pat like that. They must make moves to ensure that at SOME point in the talent cycle they are way ahead of the curve.

If the Tigers can get through this stretch at .500, i'll be a believer that they can actually make the playoffs.

Agreed..........that's a hell of a schedule. The Tigers just need to go into it with a great attitude and not put pressure on themselves. All the cliches, take one game at a time etc.....

They also host KC for a 4 game set next week. KC typically has given Detroit major trouble the last few years. Hopefully they can get at least 3 of 4.

What got everyone excited back then, though, and what has everybody raving now, is the pitching. The Tigers -- under president, general manager, CEO and miracle worker Dave Dombrowski -- are big believers in young, hard throwers, and they've built a pitching staff with some of the liveliest arms in the game. Starter Justin Verlander (6-3, 2.70 ERA), to name one, was throwing 99 mph the other night against Kansas City -- in the ninth inning. Reliever Joel Zumaya (24 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings, 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA) hit 101 mph against the Royals on Tuesday night.

White Sox fan checking in here and I will say that this team is for real. Make no mistake about it- Sox fans are taking this team seriously- pitching, defense, hitting and winning. This is going to be a great summer of baseball. Leland is the man! AL Central is waking up now w the Tribe, Sox and Tigers having some quality teams....

It would be quite a game between these Royals and the 2003 Tigers. I am loving this season so far.........could this bode well for....gasp.....the Lions?
