Did the writers forget about Aster and Cody, Dexter's other two kids? Then they have Harrison explicitly reference Rita and, well, that answers that. Yes, the writers just forgot Dexter has two other children and they're not even bothering to cover their plot holes. There was a line earlier, about Saxon killing Zach and leaving the body at Dexter's... "What if Harrison had been home?", which drew a line under their plot contrivance to get the babysitter and Harrison out of the apartment that night only to move them right back in a day later... the writers really do not care at this point.

Step-children, fine. He married their mother. I don't remember if he legally adopted them, but right now they're still children, living with the parents of their dead dad, and if those two old folks kick the bucket they'll literally have no family if Dexter is in Argentina. Last season he was all worried about Astor smoking pot. Now he's ready to let her fend for herself and drop out of her life at age 14.

While this season of Dexter is bad, it's still not impacting how much I enjoyed the first half of its run. I loathed the last year of Lost so badly that it actually made me not like other seasons. People that watched Lost would understand that statement better than those that didn't. The allure and appeal of Lost was trying to figure out what was going on and how the people got to where they were. When they tried to explain it all at the end, IMO, the whole thing fell apart. So it basically dragged the good years down with it.

Agree 100%. In a vacuum, this season of Dexter is by far worse than the last season of Lost. But tying everything together, that last season of Lost really ruined the whole series for me too. This season of Dexter wont ruin what was a pretty fun show most of the time.

I've watched four seasons, plus 3 episodes, of Lost over the past 3 weeks as I missed it during its initial run and then stubbornly refused to try to catch up. My wife finally convinced me to give it a go with the dead TV season we're in. I have a good idea of how it ended from just being around my obsessed friends back then, so I know I'm in for some disappointment...but damn, seeing it compared to being worse than Dexter is just sad and heartbreaking.

I'm hoping that binge-watching it and not having wasted my time racking my brain for "answers" over many years will make it less horrible.

Yea, this is ridiculous. Haircut / dye would be the first thing anyone would do.

And yes, even though the marshal was here earlier and highly suspicious, let's just stand outside the house and talk for a bit. No problem - nobody would ever think of watching the house.

To make all of this worse, I am only keeping showtime for this show, just because I have to see it to the end.

This is way, way worse than the last season of Lost. You may not like how they did or didnt tie up loose ends on Lost, but at least they were the same characters. Like that AV Club review said, I don't care about any of the characters the show if focusing on this year, mostly because they've just appeared/changed their story over the last few weeks, brutal for a show that has been on the air this long. Lost was great that you did care so much. On Dexter all I want is for the title character to die and that likely won't happen.

I dont care about Oliver Saxon. I dont care that he killed Cassie, who I didnt care about. I dont care that he killed Zach, who I dont care about, after attempting to frame him for the murder of Cassie who, again, I dont care about. I dont much care that hes Vogels son either. Its dramatically inert. It doesnt raise the stakes, it actually kind of lowers them. Oh, and lets talk about how we got there. Zach, somewhere in the course of getting a quarter of his head removed, managed to leave a DNA clue behind for Dexter. Fine. And so Dexter discovered the killer was related to Vogel. Okay, whatever. Then Dexter uses the Age Progress-o-Matic software and discovers Saxon is the Brain Surgeon. In order to buy into any of this garbage, Id need to have less of my grey matter intact than Zach.

Nothing Lost ever did is as bad as this (we can really include most everything after Season 4 into that).

Maybe the final season of Lost ruined the show for some (not me), but that's just it. Lost at least had something to ruin. Dexter does not.

There is really nothing Dexter could do to tarnish it's legacy further. Think about that. It's been a terrible show for a long, long time now.

Lost had a legacy to tarnish because it was pretty much an interesting show until the end. Dexter hasn't been interesting in a very long time.

Can someone just make a rule where serial TV shows have to end after 4 seasons? Breaking Bad and BSG finished strong (BB was technically 5, but it's really 4 and a couple extra episodes). All these serial shows that drag on just fall off ridiculously. Dexter and True Blood both went from slow, methodical, and realistic to action cheese fests. Lost is self explanatory. It's crazy to think of how good this show used to be.

Not only is the writing horrible, but it's like they're taking all the good leads to a finish and just blowing them a way in favor of some new generic baddie of the year. BB has set us up for the finale by pitting the three main characters at each other while Dexter has wasted Quinn vs. Dexter and Deb vs. Dexter on little 6 episode arcs.

Should have had Quinn on Dexter's tail now (crazy how quickly he just gave up on is lust to prove Dexter a killer and is now buddy buddy with him) and made Deb choose between him and Dexter.

Or, instead of wasting Deb's murder-suicide on some half-assed car cheese, end the series with her killing Dexter and then herself. They never should have become best buds again.

Maybe they'll come up with something cool for the last few episodes, but it doesn't feel like we're in the homestretch. At this point I don't really know where they could go with it that would be any more interesting than the last few episodes of any of the worst seasons of the show.

BB's fifth season is going to span 16 episodes in all, so actually it's technically five seasons and a couple extra episodes

Yeah, I agree, in principle, FBG, but I think the sweet spot is closer to 5 seasons than 4.

If Dex had a competent writing team and a 5 season deadline, they might've been able to come up with something special.

I haven't seen all of the The Sopranos, but I think The Shield's the main one that broke through the Season 5 barrier without really screwing things up. The case could be made they could've done without Season 4, but it served it's purpose well enough

taking us from disbanded Strike Team to happy Strike Team right before it all completely went to hell. It served as a nice break in the intensity from Seasons 2 and 3 before gearing up for the endgame. Though, you could also say that season's just there to get Glenn Close an Emmy, and it wouldn't be totally wrong

The first episode of that season really seemed like it was going to go some place...then Lumen happened. The show never recovered.

The Edward James Olmos twist was obvious early on (I still take pride in the fact I was the first to predict that in this thread and right after episode 1 of that season aired) but that was still a fun season.

The ending was lipstick on a pig. Also, it was poorly executed and too little too late. I mean, hell, it was almost exactly the same ending as season 5 minus the plastic sheet.

The Olmos/Hanks seasoning ending illustrates the main problem, imo.The ending was great. Then season 7 was a bit of a comeback the stakes finally got raised a little with Deb knowing and LaGuerta investigating.

Deb should've found out long before then.

Great shows aren't afraid to chew through plot. Dexter dragged everything out without fear of consequences for anything.

Rita should've died by the end of Season 2, S3 at the latest, with Deb finding out shortly thereafter.

And the kid should've never been born. They tried to raise the stakes with that, but clearly weren't up to the task of writing this show with single dad Dexter.

Harrison made the show even more unbelievable. Serial killer by night, single dad by day. Except he never was much of a dad (and most of the time Harrison must babysit himself, since it seems like Dex is out stalking people and Quinn is busy banging the nanny).

The only real plot element Harrison offered was whether he would turn into another Dexter, and given that they chose to advance the show in real time and not jump ahead years at a time effectively eliminated that option.

Yea, there are prettymuch no more Dark Passenger "serial" kills anymore - except for the occasional "accident", they all have tied into the "main plot" in some form for several seasons now. They've basically turned Dexter into a full-fledged good guy.

I don't mind the way things are going this season at all - seems like they are setting up for a showdown with Vogel. Every year Dex has a new nemesis - why would they change it this year.

Sure there are a lot of holes in the plot (ie the stepkids, Dex's constantly not worrying where Harrison is) but take it for what it is.

Right now it would appear Dex, Harrison and Hannah escape to Argentina but who knows writters could be wanting us to think this and will end it darkly.

Dark passenger Dex has been gone for a while now - just the natural evolution of his character.

Would have been a much better way to go, although I don't agree that this is leading to a Dex vs. Deb showdown. She doesn't seem to care anymore and I'm not sure what Dex could do to set her off again.

Three episodes left and we get introduced to a new character. Who cares. Wrap up the story. There's no sense of a finale coming, unless it involves Dex, Hannah and Harrison sailing of to Argentina. Maybe Deb dies and that's the big shocker.

The one thing about the second season which probably has been said is they didn't leave anything in the octagon. I wonder if they shot the season not knowing there would be a 3rd season or not at the onset.

It seems like they will tie off all remaining loose ends by the end of S2. Interested to see what they open up in the next 4.

I am only watching at this point because I have invested so much time in the series over the years and now I must see how it ends. However, I have zero confidence that the current writers will be able to put together a satisfying well-written ending to the series.

I'm not even watching the episode now, but I had to flip over to cancel my recording so I could watch Sunday Night Football (since Breaking Bad is also recording) and I happen to see Quinn waxing philosophically about what it means to relocate. Glad to see they are covering such compelling territory in the last few episodes.

1. Dr. Vogel = Harry and her serial killer son = Dexter

2. Dexter will have to choose between saving Deb or saving Hannah

Neither of those are much of a stretch, but we're desperate to find some kind of structure/story telling in these last few episodes and grasping at straws.

I also liked how dr vogel is all of a sudden so nervous being around a psychopath. Or how she was so appalled by the video of him killing zac but yet so forgiving of dexter and zac killing people as well.

You're forgetting a lifelong serial killer, who's on the run from the law for at least the third time in her life, who's been in hiding for days, and knows her face is all over the TV, hasn't figured out yet how to buy a wig.

This almost reminds me of Jerry Rice's last game in SF when Terrell Owens caught like 27 balls.
