Horrible.

I have to remember this show as two separate series where the main story ended a few years ago and they decided to do a spin-off that failed miserably.

I watched 90+ episodes of this show and gave up with two episodes to go.

Glad I did.
Wise, wise man. I really considered quitting at about the same point, then again after last week. One more hour, should I really give it that much? The only reason I really watched was so I could then fast-forward commercials in Breaking Bad.

Wrong choice. I hundred tampon commercials would have been more rewarding television.

Didnt watch all season but watched the finale, it was so bad, its scary to remember how good the first 4 seasons were written. So many dumb plots for a finale of a series with zero tension really. If Hanna was on the run, why exactly did she look the exact same as she did last year?

Dexter being a lumberjack can go down in history of the worst endings, even worse than Lost.

Once again Showtime is no HBO. Homeland season 2 and now this debacle. How can they do their viewers like that?

At the very least Dexter should have chained himself to Deb and went down with her. Don't get me wrong that would have been awful too. But an effing lumberjack? How could you even parody this season? Dexter drove into a hurricane for god's sake.

Remember when Deb was in love with Dexter. Yeah, never mind.

The pen scene and Angel's reactions to re-watching it were pretty good, I thought. Otheer than that, putrid. Awful finale and final season.

Probably the most realistic scene in the entire season. They were horrified and realized what he did wasnt self defense but honestly didnt care.

I love how Dexter can carry a body out of a hospital covered only in a sheet, load it into his boat that he had perfectly docked, and drive away without anyone noticing.

My favorite part of the finale was how Dexter is running away to a life in South America, never to return...but he parked his car at the airport (and got a front-row spot!) Good thing, too, because he needed to get ouf there in a hurry when the TSA stuff went down.

Agreed. And I think they realized that Dexter was a bad mofo. It seemed like Angel was running the past back in his head and wondering just who this guy Dexter really was. This scened was the nice piece of corn in the festering turd finale.

Especially since in a previous episode he said he was selling his car.

Yea, it was. Just rewatched it - it's probably the best scene of the last few years. The whole "I'm going to kill you with this pen", his calm button-press, the morphing into "scared Dexter", the way Quinn had that "yea, I always knew" look, and Batista finally realizing there's a lot more to Dexter. Happy there was at least one "early-series-worthy" scene.

and his boat
and his apartment (there's a shot of him on the balcony looking at the storm in the finale).

This season was like a really bad handjob. A ton of work and no payoff.

Beyond frustrated that no one ever found out about dexter. The pen scene alone was just a glimpse of what could have been, if Bautista or Quinn finally put two and two together. It's a shame the writers delayed that scene until the last 30 minutes of the series.

Terrible.

Forgive me because I stopped watching this show two years ago but didn't Quinn already know Dexter was a killer? He HAD TO KNOW he killed Liddy in season 5. I thought he kept it hush hush because Dexter helped him get out the DNA evidence on his shoe.

Maybe, I don't remember, but he didn't know Dexter was "Bay Harbor Butcher" or a serial killer. that's what I meant.

The season had potential but the writers had no interest in taking us there. The pen scene was a good example. The whole Deb-LaGuerta thing also could have been much more of a jumping off point, but the writers didn't want to take us down a road where Deb and Dex weren't on the same team.

When I'm running to catch a bus, I always remember to pack my horse tranquilizer.
This season sucked. No doubt. But some of you are out of control and just looking for things to gripe about.

Dex packed that for her and told her when he gave her the bags. He said something along the lines of 'water, snacks, and some essentials.'

Yeah I actually didn't mind that either. Hannah is a stone cold killer, also. A point we probably forgot because they had her being so passive and being outed by receptionists this season. I didn't want to see her get taken out by a hump like Elway.

The show went off the rails after Season 4, no question. But it also suffers from being (1) an hour-long Sunday night drama on premium cable; and (2) the early buzz of the first season. Both things led to much higher expectations than normal.

I really didn't like this last season at all, and I certainly wasn't wowed by the finale either, but the it could have been worse. At least they didn't go for a happy ending.

I honestly don't think the last few seasons could have been worse.

The show had some great characters, but some of the worst writing of all time towards the last couple of seasons.

I actually didn't hate seasons 5, 6, and 7 as much as most. They were still entertaining. Season 8 was just so, so awful.

The preview last week showed Elway grabbing her arm on the bus. I saw that and thought "There is a better chance of Doakes being alive than Elway taking in Hannah McKay."

One of the problems with the show is how much of a buffoon just about everyone is besides Dexter.

I don't know how far back you need to go to right the ship on this show -- in some ways, it went off course awhile ago -- but the last season was an absolute F.

If you think back to season 2, it is amazing that this show lasted 8 seasons and after the craziness of season 2, Dexter never again was in real trouble with the police. How could the final season of the series show like 1 person get on Dex's table and not have the feds circling in on him?

He kills and kills... and gets away with it. We're supposed to be okay with that because he's a good guy, which I guess we can get, but then he sees the people around him die.... so he kills himself, only to not kill himself? And become a lumberjack? In what universe does this seem like a good script?

I find it hard to believe you watched multiple seasons of a television show that was as bad as you could possibly imagine.

As far as the finale goes- What if he'd escaped to South America with the love of his life and his child after a chase and getaway type scenario out of a bad movie? What if he'd hooked up with Deb, that weird angle they stupidly brought up and eventually buried when people hated it? What if he was all a dream that happened in the mind of a boring blood technician who was fantasizing on the job? Lots of ways it could have been worse.

I'm not saying it was good or decent or even acceptable. Just saying you guys are getting a little over the top. It's part of the thing others have pointed out where everything either needs to be "the best thing ever" or "the worst thing ever." Breaking Bad got to lay claim to the former (it legitimately might be), and that left Dexter to be the latter.

At the beginning of the last episode when the actors were thanking all of the "Dexter Fans" and calling them the best fans ever, I couldn't help but think of this thread and how almost all of us hated what this show evolved into.

Speaking of which, an hour series finale that had a cast tribute, recap, intro and still ended well before the hour was up. It's almost as if they were more excited about finally ending this show than most of us.

I liked how Dexter pulled the plug on Deb and just rolled her out of the hospital like it was no big deal.
Or none of the nurses came running when all her alarms went off? How no one seemed to notice him wheeling her out through the main lobby door. How the hell did Dexter survive that run-in with the hurricane anyhow?

I think the biggest problem I've had with Dexter lately is that the writers in this season especially have completely disconnected from the character. He systemically evolved over the past few seasons into something he had never been before: emotional, empathetic, truth-telling.

The whole point and appeal to Dexter used to be that he was a character that gave us morally ambiguous thoughts. I like the guy, but should I? He's a bad person right?

What they turned him into in the end was a feel-good Lifetime movie about him finding himself. Why the hell was it suddenly Hannah that made him realize he had feelings? Rita didn't do that. Neither did Lumen (who was ok with killing folks too, remember writers?). Let alone Deb herself once she found out about him and then told him she was in love with him.

The Dexter Jeff Lyndsey wrote about was nothing like this. He stayed true to his love life being a cover story. It really was. He didn't get all human on us. The human in him was the cravings or desires that his sickness (killing) drove him towards, like an alcoholic needing just that one more drink. It drove the character and series to a dark place that appealed to the masses rather than the kumbaya-fest we ended up being subjected to.

Let's say for argument's sake that they basically took us to the brink as they did all season up until now, they could have written such a better ending even than to make him a freaking lumberjack. Any of these feels more true to the character:

1. The final scene shows Batista and Quinn surveying the wreckage from the coast and anything washes ashore to let them finally realize they were always right about Dexter and his ways. Whether he dies or some other way lives on is left wide open, intentionally, to really screw with the viewers.

2. Dexter is released by Batista and Quinn. He then attempts to figure out his plan to reconnect with Hannah only to be surprised and ultimately killed by her. The killer, killed by the killer. He finally let himself have emotions and in the end paid for it with his life.

3. Go down in a Hamlet-style everyone gets whacked type of moment. A screw the world because he is so distraught from what happened to Debra moment.

I know those aren't stellar either, but working with what they led up to, the lumberjack scenario would be far down the list.

I just liked how Elway was cool with taking a 4 hour bus trip with Hannah instead of just getting her off the bus.
"I have you in custody now, Hannah. Here's what's gonna happen. We're not going to leave the bus here at the station, we're going to wait two hours. I'm not going to tell the driver you're my prisoner. I'm not going to call ahead and tell my coworkers, the police, or the feds that we're going to arrive in Jacksonville soon. We're just going to sit here quietly and stare straight ahead on this little bus ride."
