I did appreciate, ever so slightly, Saxon's reason for coming to Miami: the police department's woeful 20% solve rate on homicides.

I thought that his reasoning was a callback to exactly what Dexter said in one of the first monologues of the series.

I actually liked that scene and Dexter's and Saxon's interplay among what was mostly a poor season (not that you would know from reading this thread . . .)

See, quotes like this remind me what this show once was. The voice overs were once used to illuminate Dexter's character - in this season, it was used to tell plot.

I can't put my finger on it exactly, but the dialogue has fallen off too. It's something I noticed in 24 and other shows... where they have explain everything to the viewer. Like, the scene with him and Hannah in the airport... "Elway is here". "But Dexter, they just said that our plane is boarding". "I know. And he's standing between the bathroom you're in (pan up to see the sign) and the gate. And where he's standing, he has a clear view of the gate".

Couldn't a lot of that just have been implied?

Contrast this to the master of a show like Breaking Bad, where those extraneous scenes don't happen. Hell, one of the scenes most people were anticipating forever (the conversation with Jr) - and they don't even show the conversation, they show the reaction. Because, of course, the viewers know exactly what just happened. Why waste time on it?

If the final season was even halfway decent then Dexter faking his own death and starting over completely alone without the chains of family and friends would actually sound like a great way to end the show. But Since every episode of the final year blew goats the finale was gonna suck either way. In the end Dexter is still a sicko killing people, and trees.

Like most everyone here. I thought this show should have ended years ago.

That being said, if the show would have ended with Dexter (and Deb) driving his boat towards the storm, I would have been ok with that.

I liked how, during the pen fight, Dexter doesn't stab with the pen fast enough and the Oliver Saxxon actor is kind of sitting there awkardly exposing his neck and shoving it towards Dexter.

I haven't commented once in this thread because I spent the last 2 months watching every season and was afraid of spoilers. i should have read up and stopped watching after season 4, but like anyone still in this thread, I felt like I had to see how it ended. And it sucked.

But the scene with the pen - I thought that when Dex told Saxxon he was going to kill him with the pen, Saxxon sort of understood - better to be dead than to spend another long-time in an institution and maybe end up getting fried. Saxxon couldn't stand being locked up again and Dex gave him a way out. I think Dex put the pen there so Saxxon would stab Dex and then Dex could kill Saxxon in sort of self-defense.

My once-favorite show sucked so hard this season that I can barely overcome my apathy to take the time to comment...

What I hated most about this season:

The cheesy dialogue and strange camera angles and film editing which made it look/feel like a tacky Telemundo soap opera.

What they did to Deb the last two episodes. She deserved much better writing and a more worthy exit (if she had to die at all).

My favorite part of the finale was how Dexter is running away to a life in South America, never to return...but he parked his car at the airport (and got a front-row spot!) Good thing, too, because he needed to get ouf there in a hurry when the TSA stuff went down.

Listen, I hesitate to stick up for this dumpster fire of a show, but that's not worth complaining about. Dexter arranged for Deb to pick his car up after he left so that she could drive it to Astor.

But I think the worst part is that they threw a couple of nuggets from the early seasons in our face in a lame, insulting attempt to connect the last couple of episodes with the golden age of the show.

1. Miguel the DA's widow being his realtor.

2. Using the very first kill room on the show, from the choir guy. ("OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID!")

Ugh. Just so annoyed right now. Put so much time into this show...only to have nobody find out about the guy who would probably be the most prolific serial killer in history if he were real.

I just liked how Elway was cool with taking a 4 hour bus trip with Hannah instead of just getting her off the bus.

"I have you in custody now, Hannah. Here's what's gonna happen. We're not going to leave the bus here at the station, we're going to wait two hours. I'm not going to tell the driver you're my prisoner. I'm not going to call ahead and tell my coworkers, the police, or the feds that we're going to arrive in Jacksonville soon. We're just going to sit here quietly and stare straight ahead on this little bus ride."

I thought this was the worst part of the finale by far.

I'll give a little on the idea of putting a hospital on the water in an area that gets heavy storms, and the idea that Dexter could sneak his wife out on a gurney (the hurricane gave them at least a little believability on that). But the bus ride thing was ridiculous. Whatever, you want to set that up for a dramatic scene on the boat, I'll suspend my disbelief a bit. But the bus thing was just too much. At least make it a train or something else that's kind of hard to stop, and give me an explanation as to why he didn't contact anyone else.

Why didn't she just take a car and drive out of state to another major airport? They made it seem like she was trying to flee East Germany.Elway is hot on my tail monitoring exit routes. Ummm, let me wait at the bus station.

Let's not get into the fact that the airport has video cameras everywhere and could easily identify Dexter planting that bag within minutes.

Again, I don't want to defend this crap, and I don't blame you for not paying attention. But Hannah specifically said that traffic was crazy as people tried to flee the hurricane so they'd take the bus, which had its own lane and would move faster.

I was going to give a long diatribe about how this show ended horribly with this season...especially since I was one of the original detractors that starting poo poo'ing the show a few years ago. They betrayed us...but who gives a damn? They took a big steaming pile of siht and threw it at the screen.

F' these writers...

Someone let me know where the original writers and showrunner went...I'll gladly tune into their next project...but I'll avoid these @zzhats forever.

Actually...on this note...it's something that is kinda near and dear to my heart.

Ed Gein spawned "Psycho", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Silence of the Lambs"...the guy killed all of 2 people that we know of...

Go check out H.H. Holmes...even if you only read the wiki about the guy it will blow your mind. Dude should be a household name with the insanity that revolved around his life...and there's talk that he may even be Jack the Ripper...who cares...even if he's not, it's an incredible story that should really drive multitudes of movies, shows and every Halloween should have guys dressing up as this guy...

Honestly I want to write a screenplay for this story...

I was glad that Dexter didn't get killed by that last lame serial killer. That's about the best thing I can come up with for the finale.

I actually stopped watching early in season 7 but caught up over the last few weeks just to find out what happens. I actually thought season 7 itself was pretty good, largely because Ray Stevenson is so fantastic, and I think generally it was the antagonists that made this show go. That's what was so disappointing about season 8 in general.

I've watched every season before the last. Used to love the show, up with Breaking Bad imo but it obviously jumped the shark somewhere around season 3-4. Should i watch the final season? I have an idea what happens but not sure i really care after the last couple seasons.

It used to be a great show, but the last season is quite tedious. If you want to know how it ends, read a plot synopsis on Wikipedia or wherever you can find one. That will be faster and less boring than watching the episodes.

I guess I am in the minority in that I thought season 5 was still pretty strong. It suffers from following up the Lithgow season but I thought season 5was as good as, even better at points, than both season 2 & season 3.

Season 6 is where things fall completely off the rails and really isn't worth watching anymore.

That one episode is where the show really took its dead end turn. They were building up Deb finding out, having her give little comments about how she understood what the vigilante was doing. On the same front, we had Quinn getting closer and closer to finding Dex out. Then at the last second, Deb decides not to pull back the curtain and Quinn decides "ah nevermind, I've got all this evidence and all these suspicions but I'm just going to forget it all and be your best bud now, Dex".

They could have ended that season with Deb finding out and then season 6 would have been her love interest (Quinn) and her brother each tugging to get her on their side. Instead they killed all those plotlines, went for a more status quo villain of the year (who was awful), and then just kind of slammed the Deb thing back into the show where it didn't fit as a hail marry at the end of the season.

Seasons 6, 7 & 8 were pretty much awful from start to finish...although I was at least hopeful about season 6 when Edward James Olmos showed up but that hope was crushed quick, fast and in a hurry.

I've mentioned before, I think they had something of a comeback in S7 and seemed on the right track to finish the story fairly well. If Season 8 had been good, the entire series would have been thought of very highly overall. People would say, Yeah S5 was a little weak and S6 sucked, but they came back strong in 7 and finished up with a great finale in 8.

Instead, people say The series started downhill after S4 when S5 was a bit weak, then S6 sucked. Little better in S7, but then S8 was the worst season of television by a "good" show maybe ever, and the finale was awful. So it leaves an overall bad taste in people's mouths about everything else.

Meh, the buildup was there, but there was no payoff. Season 2 would have been comparable to season 5 if, instead of this awesome encounter, Doakes had just given up and gone on living happily ever after as Dex's BFF.

Meh, the buildup was there, but there was no payoff. Season 2 would have been comparable to season 5 if, instead of this awesome encounter, Doakes had just given up and gone on living happily ever after as Dex's BFF.

That was very good but then after Dexter gets the upperhand the psycho girlfriend shows up and blows Doakes up. That was a wrapping it up in a neat little bow tie too.

Personally I thought Quinn going after Dexter in the first place was contrived and unnecessary. Why off Doakes to begin with if you are just going to go Doakes 2.0?

Would have been a great ending had he dumped Deb's body and went to Argentina.

I still don't understand Dexter's willingness to let Deb arrest Saxon. Isn't Saxon yet another person who knows Dexter is a serial killer? Sure, Dex will have fled the country, but certainly he poses problems for Deb.

Made no sense at all. Stupid writing by writers looking for a way to make Dexter suffer so he could give up everything. I don't find it believable at all that he thinks his son is better off without him.

I think the biggest problem I've had with Dexter lately is that the writers in this season especially have completely disconnected from the character. He systemically evolved over the past few seasons into something he had never been before: emotional, empathetic, truth-telling.

The whole point and appeal to Dexter used to be that he was a character that gave us morally ambiguous thoughts. I like the guy, but should I? He's a bad person right?

What they turned him into in the end was a feel-good Lifetime movie about him finding himself. Why the hell was it suddenly Hannah that made him realize he had feelings? Rita didn't do that. Neither did Lumen (who was ok with killing folks too, remember writers?). Let alone Deb herself once she found out about him and then told him she was in love with him.

The human in him was the cravings or desires that his sickness (killing) drove him towards, like an alcoholic needing just that one more drink. It drove the character and series to a dark place that appealed to the masses rather than the kumbaya-fest we ended up being subjected to.

Dexter from the show was never a true psychopath from the beginning Besides the people he killed, he was always nice to people. A true psychopath will hurt anyone without remorse, that's not Dexter.

Just finished up the series. Ive had season 8 downloaded for a while but it was so bad it took me a while to be interested enough to finish.

Ugh. Just a horrible season from start to finish. I was really hoping the public would find out who Dex was (Bay Harbor Butcher, etc).

At least we got a few good seasons.
