**Official** Dune movie by Denis Villeneuve thread **UPDATE- Dune 1 back on IMAX! Part 2 release March 1! (1 Viewer)

Would have been incredible but a massive risk. Thrones S1 was about $5 million an hour. It slowly grew to where the final season was up to $15 million an hour. Obviously that’s a far cry from the about $50 million an hour of the movie. Plus I doubt you get one of the premier sci-fi visionaries to sigh on for a “TV show”. Maybe eventually NF and HBO get there but it’s still a wide gap in production value.
All true.  I wasn't trying to suggest HBO would be on par with the movie but rather that if there was going to be a series, HBO has a better history of making high production values series than Netflix.  There are reports that the "Last of Us" series currently in production at HBO is running $10m plus an episode.

one thing this movie could have used is the song something about you by level 42 they could have played it over a battle scene or something look im just being real here but it makes everything better take that to the bank brohans

By the way, if you are a fan of the movie and saw it at home without the benefit of a ridiculous sound system, I’d strongly recommend seeing it in the theater. The low bass was so powerful I could see the movie screen rippling at certain points.

Edit:  Though I did miss having subtitles (which is how I watch most shows now).  I definitely missed some of the dialogue.

Unfortunately, you may find that this ends up feeling like a quality tv series, but one where you have to wait two years for the next episode.
In 2021 that does seem tough because we have such short attention spans and we want everything right away. I actually don't mind the wait. Though I also prefer the HBO weekly episode release pattern over the dump it all at once model.

Apparently HBO is doing a show on the Sisterhood.  Even though technically Dune Part 2 hasn't been greenlit yet.
The sequel is happening, the only way it wasn't was if this thing absolutely bombed. It had a good opening weekend, crushed at the IMAX theaters and is on pace for successful COVID release numbers. I am guessing it also got a lot of streams as well. The sequel in a post-COVID (praying) world would be expected to put him up even bigger numbers at theaters and be a huge draw for HBO Max. Plus it gives HBO the opportunity for spin off shows. There is a whole universe potentially at play.

Spoilers from the book? Probably best to not

I don't think I would make it through the book.

OK, super mild spoiler below....

The one thing that seemed really odd to me was how quickly the couple went from not wanting to have anything to do with Paul and what felt like a scene later they were sick to their stomach and willing to risk life and limb for this kid.

I think the movie industry is looking pretty good actually. Dune was the highest grossing WB/HBO duel release yet beating Godzilla vs King Kong. French Dispatch was on a really small limited release but it's per theater numbers were really strong. I think I read October is now the 3rd month in a row that match 80+% of the corresponding 2019 month. There's some big releases slated too: Eternals, Last Night in Soho, House of Gucci, King Richard, West Side Story, Matrix Revolutions, Spiderman all have big hit potential. Plus there's all the more artsy films with potential Award buzz with releases by Del Toro, Pedro Almodovar, Brannaugh, Sean Baker, etc. It looks like the big loser in all of his were the Fox movies that Disney took over. They almost seemed to intentionally tank them. By all accounts The Last Duel is a great movie but literally nobody saw it or even talked about. It's a $100 million Ridley Scott-Adam Driver-Matt Damon-Ben Affleck-Jodie Cormer movie about sword fighting that got awesome reviews across the board but it's like it doesn't exist.

charlie steiner you are the kind of brohan a man can vote for and i believe that toto who did the song africa did the soundtrack for the 1980s version of the movie so i hope that the producers and old ridley scott will get level 42 in to really pep up the next move in the series take that to the bank bromigo

I've also read that they wanted to make it a trilogy with the plot of Dune Messiah as the 3rd movie. Would be really cool to get a certain actor back for that one.

Interestingly enough, they have a song called Dune Tune.
ok so i listened to this and i could totally see it playing during a montage scene where the gang needs a new ornicoper and they find an old one rotting away at some dock and they fix it up using spare parts elbow grease and love and a pair of that fat defense guys pants and win a race to take back arrakis take that to the bank brochacho

A complete aside, but when I mentioned to my wife (who was out of town) that I went to see the film, she mentioned that our son Chance would have loved to see that movie. Now Chance and I went to movies together all the time, and we loved science fiction and fantasy, so I thought it was a generalized statement, but she went on to say that he loved the book. I thought she was mistaken but she assured me that a friend of ours had given him the book as a gift and he devoured it. I was simultaneously impressed with the fact that he read the entire novel, but even more floored that I had no idea. I can’t express how much of a treasure it is when you learn something new about a departed loved one that you never knew before.

Nothing really new to add, as most of the comments previously are spot on.  Too much crying from Jessica was an issue.  Great sets/soundtrack, really made it felt like you were on another world at times.  I already knew it was only part 1, and not much Zendaya, so that part was not an issue.  I thought they took a bit too much time for my liking on the Paul vision scenes, but they are important, but also kinda glossed over the fact how the spice effected the visions.  nitpicking, I know

Overall I liked it and will see part 2

But, some other tidbits - this was the first movie I've seen at the theaters in 2 years now.  Saw it in Imax and ffs, 100 bucks for 3 people, tickets, popcorn and sodas.  🤮

First movie I've seen in a while where there was no talking in the theater and no cell phone distractions (maybe the crowd was a touch older).  One improvement from the pandemic though is the wide spread use of assigned seating.  No more having to arrive 45 minutes early to get decent seats, no more fighting over families holding rows of seats, you get to see what seats were available and if you don't like it, you choose another time to go.

If part 2 is a massive hit in the Marvel range, I think they keep green lighting Dune related vehicles for as long as people buy tickets.

After the bill and the massive controversy GOT's had, I imagine HBO is a little gun shy with getting into another multi year, billion dollar series but maybe not

So -- the books.  Worth diving into the universe?  Is there a conclusion, unlike A Song of Ice and Fire to date?
I read through the series twice as a kid, loved them but it was long ago and far away. Great series but it's not for the faint of heart, deep and well written. I really got into the Sisterhood and their machinations as well as Paul's development throughout the series.

Frank Herbert wrote 6 books, but his son has written several more mostly on the prequel side. Overall the series spans something like 15,000 years. Maybe just see how far into the Frank Herbert series it holds your interest. The first two sequels mostly play out the stories of the characters you met in this movie . I can't even remember much after God Emporer of Dune because it was so long ago.

I don't have the most amazing sound setup (actually probably barely passable for some but I like it), but at one point the subwoofer was moving so much it fell off the shelf behind me.  Scared the daylights out of me :)

this is awesome
Take it to the bank brohan, I teared up a little reading it

Loved it. Seemed like it had sort of a blade runner vibe with the cinematogrophy and tone of the film. But all amped up with the newer technology. Watched it at home and had the distinct feeling it would be much better at the theater. Think the emperor should have been more disgusting like the original. But he was still pretty creepy.

Who was the emperor? I didn’t think we ever saw him.

Wasn't he the big fat homey that was levatating and taking the greasy oil bath?

If not I might need a rewatch with less cannibus.
I think he was in charge of the Harkonin (sp?) people who attacked. The ones who are all bald and have Bautista in their team. I assumed that because they had a similar bald look and pale complexion.

Yes, that was the head of House Harkonnen.

First book is amazing, a seminal sci-fi defining book. After that, you pretty much will either love the subsequent books or hate them, there’s rarely people that seem to fall in between. Let’s just say the overarching plot takes some major twists and turns and if you think the first books plot is deep and complicated, wait until you get thru the next 5. I’ve never read the later series books written by Herbert’s son, and honestly I read the original series like back in the 90’s when I was much younger too.

It’s not so wrong, we’re only human after all.

Question. So the Emperor replaces the family on the spice world, only to support the outgoing family warring against them to get the spice world back. But would that not appear as in direct violation of the Emperor’s order?  Doesn’t make sense to me.

When the Harkonnens attacked the Atreides on Arrakis, it was not in violation of the Emperor's will. It was part of the Emperor's plan.

In the movie, Baron' Harkonnen's nephew (Bautista) complained that the Emperor had given Arrakis to House Atreides.  Why would the Emperor do that? The Barron told him not to assume it was a gift of love.

What he was getting at was that the Emperor put the Atreides on Arrakis precisely in order to snuff them out. The Emprire had a very powerful military (the Sardaukar), but the Atreides military, led by Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho, was becoming strong enough to feel threatening. So the Emperor hatched a plan to have the Harkonnens defeat the Atreides. Step one of the plan was getting the Atreides to move to Arrakis where they'd be more vulnerable. Step two was to lend some Sardaukar to the Harkennons to fight in Harkennon dress. The Harkonnens were in on the Emperor's plan from the beginning.

The Empire could not attack the Atreides directly or the other great houses (composing the Landsraad) would have rebelled. They all feared the Emperor picking them off one by one. So the Empire's role in taking down the Atreides had to be kept secret. The other houses could not find out that the Sardaukar were involved.

When my son Jonas was eight years old, he was an advanced reader, and enjoyed it.  I thought he was old enough and advanced enough to give a "big book" a try, so I found a used copy of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and told him to read it when he got bored.  One day that summer I came home from work and walked into the living room.  Usually he greeted me with a big hug and rough-housing, but that day he didn't even realize I'd walked into the room.  He literally went from Hardy Boys and Patrick McManus to Lord Of The Rings.  It's one of my favorite pictures I have of him (he's now 17), and I hope it will bring you some measure of joy and fondness of what Chance must have looked like engrossed in Dune.

That is so, so cool. Thank you so much for sharing. That is indeed a great photo.

The Baron was doing a lot of channeling of Col. Kurtz.  I was hoping for something else out if that character/performance.

So I’m not the only one.  I feel better now.  (Unless of course you’re in your 70’s with hearing aids then I’m right back to feeling bad again)

But wouldn't it be pretty clear to the rest of the Landsraad after the fact that the emperor issued the code red?  I mean shouldn't he be righteously pissed that the Harkonnens ignored his supposed orders, and send the Sardaukar after them?  He has the power to order them off planet, but then they turn around and attack the people he put in their place, take back the thing he took from them, and he does nothing?  Seems a little suspicious.  Or does taking out the Atreides weaken the Landsraad so much that he doesn't care once the deal is done?

Bunch of old farts in here needing the subtitles on!

(yes, I am also there.  I know most is my hearing - but I blame it 100% on the interstate noise at the house ;)   )

I thought they did a really good job with him. Both disgusting and super creepy.

I thought Skarsgard was awesome.

Brolin and Momoa well casted.

The biggest miss on casting for me was Oscar Isaac...just doesn't feel regal to me and looks nothing like his son.

Never read the books or saw the original movie; I liked it. Looked great. As I think someone else mentioned, I would've enjoyed this more a series rather than a movie. I'm old, so I don't mind long movies, but my 15 year old won't even watch a movie this long in one sitting, yet will binge Squid Games or Stranger Things in a couple of nights. Weird. Dune 1 seemed a bit rushed and I would've enjoyed watching more episodes and getting more details and then tuning in next season.

They would have had to spend about half a billion dollars to make a 10 episode season of equivalent quality and that’s before any marketing. To put that in perspective Game of Thrones most expensive season was around $100 million.

That said Amazon is spending $400+ million on a single season of a Lord of the Rings show so maybe that becomes something of a model channels will try from time to time.

I think Villeneuve said he wanted to shoot Part 1 and Part 2 at the same time (similar to LOTR), and the answer was: No way. Make the first one first and let's see how it does. If nobody would commit to funding 5 hours of screen time up front, nobody was going to fund 10 hours.

Lmao my son saw the action packed trailer with Drax, Aquaman, Mary Jane, Thanos, Poe Dameron, and Polka Dot Man and wanted to watch it. 2.5 hours later he was pissed at himself for wasting his time.

I get that, but you explain it better.  My issue is that the other houses see Harkennon apparently violate the Emperor's decree openly and flagrantly.  Doesn't that weaken his position with the other houses?
