**Official** Dune movie by Denis Villeneuve thread **UPDATE- Dune 1 back on IMAX! Part 2 release March 1! (1 Viewer)

I think Villeneuve said he wanted to shoot Part 1 and Part 2 at the same time (similar to LOTR), and the answer was: No way. Make the first one first and let's see how it does. If nobody would commit to funding 5 hours of screen time up front, nobody was going to fund 10 hours.
I also think LOTR was a different story. The way Peter Jackson split it up just worked really well and held pretty true to the books. This first part of Dune is a slow roll IMO, similar to Fellowship of the Ring but with all the storylines in Dune underlying the overarching plot, think it's just more difficult to fit that into 2 1/2 hrs. Fellowship is a little more straight forward, you have a bad guy, a reason to want to take him down, the means to do it and a small, identifiable group that you kind of get attached to. Dune is much harder to do that with IMO.

I get that, but you explain it better.  My issue is that the other houses see Harkennon apparently violate the Emperor's decree openly and flagrantly.  Doesn't that weaken his position with the other houses?
Somehow I think people would expect them to do bad stuff and they’ll get a slap on the wrist, but we need them to get spice flowing again. I didn’t read the books. I can see how it dragged for some folks but they did a good job of explaining things. Maybe too good a job.

I think it would have gone over a bit better if it was already announced that it was part 1 of 3. It’s not like the studio can’t cancel the 2/3 if it bombs, but knowing that going in probably would have helped the abrupt ending for non-book/80s movie fans.

Seriously, how in the #### am I supposed to know that?
Yeah not sure but also does it really matter? I’m not sure every little detail needed to be understood to enjoy it. It’s better than the alternative of treating the audience like we are idiots and overexplaining. I liked that it felt like it was made adults and not kids.

totally get it, and that was something that Lucas did well with Star Wars...we didn't need a full explanation of "the clone wars" to appreciate the story for example.

Probably an overreaction, just annoyed I need to do deep dives to understand what exactly was going on for what was otherwise a really awesome production.  I suppose the basic story was easy enough to follow so just a minor quibble I suppose.

I don't think that's a big deal. The Emperor ordered the Harkonnens off of Arrakis and they left. But the Harkonnens and the Atreides had been fighting for hundreds of years, and the Emperor didn't order them to stop fighting. The Atreides tried harvesting spice on Arrakis, weren't doing so well, and the Harkonnens attacked and took over again without objection from the Emperor. Seems fair enough.

(By the way, I cringe every time I write "the Atreides" as a plural. It should be "the Atreideses." But that seems even weirder.)

As a stand alone movie - it felt like we did not get anywhere.

Maybe the book has more time pass?  It makes way more sense if House Atreides is performing poorly (even if due to sabotage) and that they miss their deadlines and/or are not producing enough spice etc.  But that takes time.  The movie had us see that they were left with bad equipment and other issues, but they hadn't even unpacked their bags yet when the attack came.

The whole thing only seems to make sense to me (as a non-book reader) if the whole goal was only to cut the head off of House Atreides, and the emperor and the Harkonnens didn't really care that everyone else (whatever other relevant houses/political players exist) would recognize the transfer for the setup that it was.  If the whole thing was designed to provide a convincing cover for what the Harkonnens & Emperor were doing, I agree with Mr. Jenkins that it doesn't seem to track.  After all, if the Harkonnens left Arrakis at the Emperor's request and just came back and reconquered it a short time later, they would seem to be at least violating the spirit of the Emperor's instructions to relinquish the planet to the Atreides in the first place.

Enjoyed the movie. Would be best served as a trilogy to develop plot points and characters. Didn't care for so much of the movie being dark and shadowy sets as it made it more difficult to know who was who and what was happening.

Maybe now the emperor can double cross the Harks and crush them for going against his orders. Then he’s eliminated two of the most powerful groups. Or maybe once the Chalamet family is eliminated and the emperor and Harks are too powerful for any rebellion. They got the Chalamet family out and control the spice. I am sure we will find out more about the political machinations in the sequel when we likely see the Emperor.

Then I’m sure Chalamet teams with Zendaya sand crew to fight their enemies (Harks, Emperor, etc)

This is my complaint in many movies.

If they're going to have us stare at a black screen, why didn't they make it an audiobook instead of a movie?

Not all of Dune was like that, but too much for my taste was.

IMAX Friday night. Really looking forward to it. And yes I am a fan of the Lynch Dune Movie from 1984 so this will be a real treat as a fan of the novels.

Damn, they really missed the boat on that. They needed to do a LOTR, Hobbit, Hunger Games like every year release if they knew it would be a trilogy. I don’t think they can pull off a Star Wars type delay because it didn’t “end” with a real ending like blowing up the Death Star. I was a fan of the 80s movie so I’ll watch the other two regardless, but they’ll definitely lose people who were confused and didn’t like the non-ending. There was no indication that another movie would be coming.

When the Harkonnens attacked the Atreides on Arrakis, it was not in violation of the Emperor's will. It was part of the Emperor's plan.

In the movie, Baron' Harkonnen's nephew (Bautista) complained that the Emperor had given Arrakis to House Atreides.  Why would the Emperor do that? The Barron told him not to assume it was a gift of love.

What he was getting at was that the Emperor put the Atreides on Arrakis precisely in order to snuff them out. The Emprire had a very powerful military (the Sardaukar), but the Atreides military, led by Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho, was becoming strong enough to feel threatening. So the Emperor hatched a plan to have the Harkonnens defeat the Atreides. Step one of the plan was getting the Atreides to move to Arrakis where they'd be more vulnerable. Step two was to lend some Sardaukar to the Harkennons to fight in Harkennon dress. The Harkonnens were in on the Emperor's plan from the beginning.

The Empire could not attack the Atreides directly or the other great houses (composing the Landsraad) would have rebelled. They all feared the Emperor picking them off one by one. So the Empire's role in taking down the Atreides had to be kept secret. The other houses could not find out that the Sardaukar were involved.
And if I remember correctly from the book, the Sardaukar were in Harkonnen uniforms. They showed up in Sardaukar uniforms in the movie. I feel this is important as it was supposed to look like JUST a Harkonnen invasion.

As far as I know, it's not a trilogy. You make a good point about it not having a true ending though Empire didn't and it was 3 years until Jedi came out. There were 3 years between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Ultimately, the studio was not willing to greenlight 5+ hours of Dune after how poorly Blade Runner 2 did.

Wait, Luke losing to his father and losing his arm and Han Solo taken away in carbonite isn't an ending? It's called Empire Strikes Back and they did and the rebels basically lost. It was a great ending. Dune 1 ended with Paul walking away with the Fremin. Not even in the same vicinity of Empire's ending. Batman is an interesting one because while there is absolutely a common theme, all of the Batman movies can stand on their own as there is an "ending" in each one and different villains, etc.

It is pretty clear in Dune that there's more to come, but it got cut at a weird part. Almost making that knife fight as important as the Harkonnen taking over. I'll put it this way, after Dune 2 comes out, I think I'd have to watch 1 and 2 together. I'd likely fast forward a bunch, but it's not like Star Wars or Empire or Dark Night or The Dark Night Rises that you can watch just one. LOTR, Hobbit and Hunger Games aren't the same because you knew every year you were getting the next one.

On the trilogy, I didn't read the Dune books, but I recall some articles or ads for the movie mentioned the next great trilogy. I assumed they would end 2 where the 80s movie ended and then have a 3rd which someone mentioned above was the next book.

Seems like it will have to be a trilogy - imo.

If the audience is not familiar with the story, they are going to have no idea what is coming up, since I don't think it logically flows from how part 1 was presented - but, its pretty easy to see how the next movie will cover the next development, with a third and final movie to cover the aftermath, if you will.

I agree Empire had a great ending. I guess I thought you meant resolution. Empire is a great movie but the ending might as well have a "To Be Continued" scroll across the screen. It's a classic ending and a way better ending than Dune.

Dune had the feeling of: Welcome to the Story. As if it was almost all set-up. That said, if that was the world building, it was well set-up. The ending left me wanting more. It wasn't a cliff hanger or something super memorable, but it had me walking away excited. Maybe that's just me?

From what I have read, it was pitched as 2 movies with a possible trilogy being the second Dune book. I don't know, just saying what I have read.

I didn’t mind because I knew the old movie. If I was new to Dune, I would have been disappointed because it wasn’t a resolution. I almost think it would have been better if the knife fight didn’t happen and the end was losing the battle. That would have been more of a finish.

As someone totally new to Dune, I would have liked that less. It was better for me that the ending gave some hope and rounded the story out since Chalamet was always the central figure.

I didn’t know much about it at all.  Just got back.  I liked it and was willing to listen but I couldn’t understand what they were saying half the time.  The movie was super loud but my tinnitus didn’t help. I covered my ears in several scenes.

To me it’s a story about a betrayal.  An escape and some mystical stuff.  I thought the mom was a great character and she just looked the part.  I really don’t care for Mamoa much, but his character was bad ###.  I don’t know what happened to Brolin.  Javier Barden was awesome as always.

I’ll go to the next one.  I love the world building and it would have helped more if I could hear the dialogue.  Zendaya, how is she famous again?  She’s KC Undercover still to me.  The dragonfly choppers were neat.  I don’t understand the significance of the bone daggers.

I thought the best scene was the mom and son escaping the chopper.  Using the Suggestion spell of whatever.

Javier Barden was in this?

I think Zendaya started out on Disney and singing

the movie literally started by saying part 1 and never mentioning a part 2 so had the movie ended without a cliffhanger i would have been even more pissed.

Full timeline of the Dune Universe

*** THIS IS CHUCK FULL OF EVERY SPOILER EVER KNOWN TO MAN SO DON'T CLICK ON IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS BEFORE 2023 ***

It's also a nice, concise, 10 minute video of the timeline. If you've read the books or don't care about spoilers, it's a good watch to answer a lot of the questions I'm sure some of you have.

Oh yea, what happened to the bone dagger that the woman gave to the mother?

Rebecca Ferguson is beautiful. However, I googled her and come to find out she's only 38 years old? She looks mid-40s. One of the rare actresses that looks older than she actually is. Chalamet is 25 years old. Was it meant to be part of the story that she had her son at a very young age? She is mentioned as a concubine and not a wife.

Dune nerd.  Re-read all the books--Frank's and Brian's---in the last 5 years.  I'm in the minority that loved Brian's work, maybe even more so than Frank's.

Finally saw the movie last night and LOVED it.  Loved how and where it ended, perfect setup for Paul's story in Movie 2.

Gorgeous movie, a great "welcome to Dune" (as somebody mentioned above) for the non-readers, really set up future movies well.  Can't wait to go again this weekend.

She is definitely beautiful.  And has one of those ageless looks. I watched the movie last night and knew I'd seen her in another movie recently.  It was in Dr. Sleep.

I think Chalamet is meant to be more like 16 in the movie, seemed like they were trying to portray him as a little angsty, unsure of himself, moody, etc

A complete aside, but when I mentioned to my wife (who was out of town) that I went to see the film, she mentioned that our son Chance would have loved to see that movie. Now Chance and I went to movies together all the time, and we loved science fiction and fantasy, so I thought it was a generalized statement, but she went on to say that he loved the book. I thought she was mistaken but she assured me that a friend of ours had given him the book as a gift and he devoured it. I was simultaneously impressed with the fact that he read the entire novel, but even more floored that I had no idea. I can’t express how much of a treasure it is when you learn something new about a departed loved one that you never knew before.
That's awesome BB.

Paul Atreides is a teenager. His mom disobeyed the Bebe Gesserit by conceiving a boy.
IIRC, BG are never wives.

Watched it over the weekend. Didn't see the 80s movie and, somewhat surprisingly, didn't read the books.

I enjoyed it. Definitely in the Star Wars mold. I obviously knew little and didn't seem to pick up too much about the backstory, but I'm assuming I'll learn more with the sequels. Thought the amount of dialog versus action was good.

In the days of streaming TV episodes I do worry that I'll lose interest and/or forget things by the time the sequel comes out. I had this happen to be recently with the Netflix series Lupin (loved the first introduced block of episodes, then completely lost interest by the time the second set was released). Nonetheless, I'll hopefully hang on.

Yeah my takeaway and understanding based solely on the movie was that he was still a teenager (16-18).
