Height- 6'1Age- 39Starting weight- 210 (Jan. 1)Current Weight- 197Goal Weight- 185Here's one I haven't seen expressed here. My diet is heavy on protein, fruit and veggies, basically no carbs except for 1/2 cup of cereal in the morning. Like many others MFP has been a huge help for me, just knowing I have to report to it keeps me honest. I have slowed down my weight loss some over the last week, my still inching downward, which is fine. Here's my problem...when I was eating with minimal discipline (if I had to guess, probably 2500/cal a day), I was the most regulat MF'er around. Every morning, my son would wake me up, I would put on the TV for him, and once I started walking around for two minutes, I was in the bathroom two minutes later. You could pretty much set your watch to it.By comparison, since I've started watching myself (1800/cal a day), I've been a lot less regular, and have seriously slowed down recently. I've gone once since Thursday (and when I say once I really mean 4 times over 90 minutes with the help of a laxative). Anyone else notice this issue, or have recommendations around it? I took a fiber supplement yesterday and this AM to no avail.
What is the difference in your protein:carb intake from your 2500 calorie days to your 1800 calorie days? One of the common complaints about very high protein diets is that they cause people to be less regular and when they do poop it can be quite painful.
I would actually say I eat about the same amount of protein that I always did, but instead of carbs, I am eating more vegetables.
So most of the 700 calorie difference is from a reduction in refined/processed carbs with little change in protein and fat intake? That would dramatically change the percentage of calories you are getting from protein and fat and possibly bring on the regularity issue you are having. So long as it is not painful when you do poop I wouldn't be overly concerned with it.

If you go for an eight hour drive with fumes in your oil tank i expect problems to result. Similar story here. Body needs fuel, otherwise everything is absorbed as fat. So when alcohol and chicken pot pie were the go to's after a hard day's work I would expect that to sit in his system longer than usual. Several factors can go into sudden weight changes which is why I advise people to only weigh themselves once every week or two on the same day at the same time, first thing in the morning, I think it's silly to pretend that isn't a factor though.

Was 186 on Friday. Had a fairly normal day of eating. Woke up on Saturday had a little bread and headed out for about 8 hours of intense shoveling. Was drinking dark and stormys throughout. So Sat night not eating much, shoveling a ton and drinking I was pretty gone. Took a shower, ate a couple of slices of chicken pot pie and went to bed.
Isn't eating right before bed like the cardinal sin of dieting? Not sure, just asking. I've always heard it is one of the worst things you can do.
If you practice good habits all day it has little long term impact, if any. I think it's characterized as a cardinal sin because that is when bad habits are common. Last thing many people have at the end of the day... A drink or a snack. Don't eat before bed... Gets rid of the unhealthy treat.

How does one explain the lack of frequency and/or regularity though? Really the only time I have gone in 5 days is with a laxative, and that was miserable.

No.You are restating a dieting myth. For a healthy person* if your body is not getting fuel from food it mobilizes fat for energy, it is not until fat stores become dangerously low that the body will switch to muscle protein for energy. If you body is getting fuel from food it will use that fuel until it doesn't have any more then it will start mobilizing fat. Calorie restriction over time can and will cause metabolism to slow (which is not the same as saying it will hold onto fat) but, once again, your body won't do anything irregular after only 8-10 hours without food even if it involves strenuous exercise. The human body regulates itself significantly better than you are giving it credit for.

*Now guys like Gary Taubes believe that obesity is not caused by sedentary lifestyle or overeating but rather a physical defect in the way some people regulate fat storage and metabolism. He suggests that for some people when they eat food the defect in fat regulation causes the energy in food to be preferentially stored as fat and not to be used to fuel cells. He believes that this causes these people to be essentially nutrient deficient, which causes them to be consistently hungry and that is what drives the overeating. I think that theory is more along the lines of what you are saying when you are referring to "starvation mode."

I am not sure what the mechanism is behind it, but it is very commonly seen in people who adopt Atkins lifestyle. I am sure a google search for something like "high protein diet pooping problems" will yield some explanations.

Just wanted to add that there's some great discussion and tips here that helps a lot of us. I really like reading about what diets/methods have and haven't worked for different sized and aged people, it helps a ton.

I generally don't but I was so hungry I had to eat something.

i am currently carb cycling. Before cycling I was regular pooper twice a day. Now once if I am lucky. FIBER keeps me regular and full. Fiber one cereal for breakfast and I am fine. A little gassy in the afternoon but works.

Getting close to the 10 pound mark. ACtually treated myself with a spoonful of Hagen Daas last night. That Creme Brule ice cream is just, well, it's orgasmic. I wanted to eat the whole thing and would have a month ago. But I had a little taste and put it back in the freezer. 300 calories a serving and probably had 1/4 of a serving in that one spoonful. Love that stuff. Haven't had a drop of alcohol since I started and I'm surprisingly ok with that. I usually need a drink after a long day in court and I've had several of them. But I've been sticking to my guns. It's starting to amaze me more and more that just watching my calories is helping a lot. I haven't even started measuring fat and the rest of the stuff yet. Just trying to get used to a new set caloric intake on a daily basis. Another big test was this morning. Wife needed a bagel sandwich and asked if I wanted anything. Of course, I wanted a pork roll and cheese with extra cheese, but what did I order? Nothing. That's right. Who has will power? This guy. No ice cream indulgences, no whiskey, no bagels or pork roll.......... damn.

Going to start weighing in Sunday nights since that's probably when I'm at my heaviest what with the weekend and all.Weight on 1/13/13 - 258 - 4 pounds lost since last weigh in. 4 pounds total.
Weight on 1/20/13 - 255 - 3 pounds lost since last weigh in. 7 pounds total. The above actually frustrates me since I was 252 the night before. Football Sundays always kill me.
Weight on 1/27/13 - 253 - 2 pounds lost since last weigh in. 9 pounds total. Was really busy last week and ate out a few times which put me over my calories but not too much. Didn't get to exercise as much as I'd like either. With Superbowl Sunday this week I'd be happy to just lose another two pounds. Going to try and push myself more during the week to compensate for what I know will be a bad Sunday for calories.
Weight on 2/03/13 - 248 - 5 pounds lost since last weigh in. 14 pounds total.Wow. Last week was a good week. Went over the 10lbs lost mark and dipped below 250 for the first time since High School. Hoo rah.
Weight on 2/10/13 - 246 - 2 pounds lost since last weigh in. 16 pounds total. Not as good as last week but I'm still happy. Unfortunately I got the notice last night from MFP that I should "recalculate my goals." I said OK SURE! They cut my daily calorie allowance from 1730 to 1650. Bastards :(
Weight on 2/17/13 - 242 - 4 pounds lost since last weigh in. 20 pounds total. Finally hit the 20lb mark. I started on January 7th so I think I made pretty good time. I'd love to lose another 3 by my next weigh in and be in the 230's (I can't remember the last time that was.) Going out to dinner tonight and saved all my calories for it. Having an 18oz Ribeye with Fries. It'll be a good time.

So I got these crusts...http://www.quakerbakery.com/RetailPizzaCrusts.htmlFor my Spinich/Feta Pizza. Well, Myfitnesspal has each slice being 130 calories instead of 130 per serving (1/3 of a pizza).http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calorie-chart-nutrition-factsEating 4 pieces, that's a 400 calories difference, anyone know how to figure it out?

PSA - Natto is a fermented soybean preparation commonly eaten in Japan. This stuff packs a super health punch. Natto has very high levels of vitamin K2, selenium and a substance called nattokinase all of which are either natural blood thinners, help reduce risk of heart attack and stroke as, lower cholesterol and improve the bone formation process. Natto also has a great probiotic impact as it contains tons of live bacterial culture which help improve your gut health (i.e. nutrient absorption and regularity). On a personal anecdotal note I think eating it regularly really helps to curb hunger I imagine because the improved gut health helps to absorb more nutrients from the food I do eat so I end up simply not being hungry.

It has a pungent smell, is slimy and quite unattractive but the taste is pretty bland and I find it easy to eat, although I imagine many will disagree. Still, throw a little hot mustard on it, suck down a small 50 gram container every day then sit back and watch the health benefits roll in.
I am about to try natto for the first time. The rice is cooking as I'm typing this. I'm going to go with just natto, soy sauce, and rice, and see if I like it. If I don't like it, I'll add an egg or some sauerkraut (I'm out of kimchi) to obscure the taste.

And the verdict is: very slimy and gooey. But not at all unpleasant. I like it. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it's not tangy like a lot of other fermented foods. It's kind of like eating extra-slimy Boston baked beans. A bit more pungent, but not much.

The smell is the strongest thing about it and I don't even find that overpowering or offensive. I find the taste mild to bland nothing like a kraut or kimchi (both of which I love). I think the most difficult part for people would probably be the stringy/slimy look of it.I have been eating a package with breakfast daily, typically with spicy mustard or Tabasco sauce, for awhile now. Good stuff IMO.

Advice:Trying to shed some pounds myself. Got back into diet soda and now I'm quitting cold turkey again. I HIGHLY recommend Wal-Mart (or whatever grocery store equivalent you have) flavored sparkling water. No sugar, no caffeine, no nothing except deliciousness. Good substitute for soda, IMO.
Yep. They're flavored waters are money.Actually most of the brands that supermarkets sell of these things are pretty good. They found the correct formular of taste/health somewhere over the past 10 years.
Poland Spring's brand is pretty good.

I quit doing my little weekly updates because nobody gives a flying ####. :lmao: For the curious I'm now 235 with 27lbs lost so far. Things are going exceptionally well. Should hit the 30lb mark next week.

I suppose I should join this.

Age: 35

Height: 5 10

Weight: 236

Got some blood test results from a recent physical and they are not very good.

Total Cholesterol: 253

Bad cholesterol: 171

Good Cholesterol: 33

Blood Pressure: 151/96

All the above AND I have a family history of cardiovascular problems. I gotta lose weight. I've done it before so I know the drill, just have to keep motivated.

FYI

A good 3 vacations have knocked me off the Atkins pretty good this summer.

Anyone interested in firing up a new contest from here through Thanksgiving or the end of the year?

Let's get a head start on the new years resolution.

Big fan of the fitbit now too if others want to sync up on there?

Would love to do this for a few dollars too if enough interest. 50 bucks held by a reputable fbg. If you lose 10 percent of your body weight you get your 50 back, otherwise the biggest % loss gets whatever is not collected by meeting your reserve?

LMK and we can start a new thread if there's interest

I'm in

6'

Staring weight: 216

Goal Weight: 190

MyFitnessPal: mattnv

Dropped from 240 to 200, as low as 190 a few years back, have obviously put a bunch back on, was in around 210 before XMas, so hoping a few come off quickly here at the start.
Hey, what do you know, I'm 216 again! I dropped to the low 200s when we did this before, got back up as high as 220 and have been busting my ### for the past couple weeks, so in other words, I'm in.

I'm in. I put on more than I should have over the summer also. Sitting at 216 now with no signs of it going down. Wife is already going on about needing to lose weight. Let me know when we're ready to start.

Played squash for a little over an hour last night, can't think of anything even close in terms of a cardio workout. I was dripping sweat within a few minutes and kep going for way too long.

We played for the loser buying the winner beer and nachos. I won but am going to claim my prize once I drop a few more lbs
