So it seems Catalyst drivers 11-8 are teh suck. Making my screens all flashy and jumpy. Lo and behold, 11-9 was released like 15 minutes ago. Downloading now and hoping. . .

catalyst 11.9 is actually worse for me. the jumpiness is brutal.

Apparently they took all the Caspian servers down before i had a chance to play. Metro is just so, so bad. Its basically a coin flip whether you're going to die every time you pick your head up (while outside) or turn a corner (inside). If some guy is laying prone staring at the spot you're coming out of, you're dead 95% of the time. Everything is just so damned bottlenecked. And its not even like you can run a little mini flanking route to clear the way for your teammates, because your flaking route will probably be covered and there are usually 4 or 5 spots they could be watching the door from anyway.

Having this be the "lead" map is really a slap in the face from Dice towards the BF community. But honestly, i can't imagine how ANYONE could like this map. The COD players they're trying to attract want to be running and gunning. They don't want to lay prone for 45 seconds and then take a 50/50 chance of dying by crouch walking out from behind a train car.

Guess they figured the pretty graphics would draw in more new players than the ####ty map would drive away. The sad thing is that they're right.

Not jumping off the cliff about the game. I still can't wait. But this is a really bad first impression.

Well, uninstalling 11.9 and installing 11.7 has fixed the flickering. 11.7 is the oldest driver that lets you play BF3, as well.

Apparently there is a damage bug in the beta. it makes certain shots cause way more damage than intended.Makes sense. I think I got 1 shotted last night more times than I did in 18 months on bc2.
Including once by me :bag:TLEF had the honor of being my first revive though. I killed the guy who killed him first. Maelstrom was the first FBG to TK me (although I own the first FBG on FBG crime with the aforementioned shot).
Happy to oblige, I'm sure it won't be the last time either. Pretty sure I've successfully TKed TLEF by now as well. My impressions - not being able to select your squad is really annoying. The "ground holes" are also bad - I think there is probably like 1 path to get to the A target outside without falling in a hole. But I expect both of those to be fixed prior to launch. I don't expect the flashlights to change, but I really hope they do. The map is fun in the tunnels, outdoors is just brutal, particularly with the places to get stuck. But overall - very impressed, and it looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Yeah, thats great.Good games with Corp and Maelstrom last night.I had one really nice game where I got behind the defense on the 3rd stage and lit up like 15 or 16 guys in a row. It was pretty great. For me, the carbines are significantly better than the assault rifles so far. Even using the heavy barrel and the foregrip, the default AR's have way too much recoil for my taste. Can't hit anything. The M416 is better though. Just unlocked it late last night.

I also created the FBG Platoon on battlelog. (complete with half assed FBG logo). Feel free to send me an origin and/or battlelog friend request (they are separate) and I'll send you an invite to the group. Pretty sure console players can join as well, so go nuts.

Loving all the different scope choices. A lot of them have cross hairs/chevrons, so i suck with them. But they are all unique and good for different situations (Holographic scope is amazing indoors, but the large reticule and the fact that you can't really see it out in the sun make it pretty useless on the first stage) There's 13 different scopes i think. The one thing I hope they allow in the full version is the ability to change the color of your reticule.

I like how they have a keybind area, but nothing can be changed. I'm guessing it's so you can see what key does what for the beta. I hate default key settings. :sigh:

My new PC showed up at home today, I'm stuck at work till 4:30 :wall:

Should be able to get it set up tonight and get an Origin account activated. With a 3mg DSL connection  it may take a couple of days to get everything downloaded. Next week we will be out of town for a couple of days so it may take another week before I can get into the BF3 beta.

So far I can't get my hands on that sweet sweet 8-bit BF3 action because Sony's Plastation Store is "down for maintenance."

So let me see, Sony paid for the right to get exclusive access to BF3 DLC early, but can't even get their servers up to provide the beta for everyone. Awesome.

I can't wait to buy a Microsoft console for the next generation.

I LOVE the new animations. This game plays so much smoother than BC2, in fact the gunplay feels remarkably similar to Medal of Honor and Homefront for those of you that have played that. The recoil on the weapons is ridiculous at first but it gets much more manageable once you unlock the Heavy Barrel attachment.

This game is still really broken and at times I have to wonder if Dice even playtested it before releasing it to the public. Sometimes I'll be sprinting along and then my guy will forget how to run and I won't be able to sprint again until I use my knife. Then I can run again. Squad spawning is completely broken as well; most of the time my squadmates don't even show up, or when I join a game with a buddy they won't show up in my squad at all. Sometimes I'll just stay stuck in a loading screen for eternity; I've had to dashboard 3 times just to fire the game back up and try it again. For all the big #### they're talking about COD, it sure feels like they're rushing the console versions to market without cleaning them up. I don't see how they can clean up all the issues in time for release.

I don't like how well snipers blend into the map and wish players were more visible like they are in BC2. When they're laying prone in a bush they might as well be sniping from an abyss of darkness. I have yet to notice the lens "flicker" they said would negate camping by these noob snipers. It seems like every time I take damage from an SVD, the initial sniper rifle, I die instantly to a 1-hit KO. Not a big fan of that.

I'm really upset that Dice thought it would be best to give us a linear, campy, garbage map like Operation Metro as our one playable map for this beta. Battlefield is so much more than that and I guess they wanted to try their best to lure in the COD players. But the gunplay certainly sticks and just feels so clean compared to BC2. No more getting hung up on twigs, etc. I can't emphasize enough how cool it feels to cleanly vault over a ledge rather than jumping around "like super mario bros." as tlef once said. It's very comparable to watching someone run parkour through a skate park if you know what that looks like.

Overall I'm extremely impressed, but I know my first order of business will be to skip Operation Metro every time it comes up in the rotation once BF3 comes out.

edit: Oh yeah, and LOLdropshotting is totally in this game.

Good stuff.I'm sure they'll fix most of the stuff with a patch that's available on launch day. I doubt much of anything will be fixed on the disk from the beta. Beta runs untl 10/10 or something and I imagine that they're already "printing" disks at this point or at least very close to it.

Do I really have to unlock everything for every kit as both an attacker and defender? Has that always been like that? Because that kind of sucks.

And so far, the AK74 seems way more powerful than the first Assault weapon for the Attackers. I played 3 rounds in a row as an Attacker and had a really hard time killing people with that gun, then flipped around to a Defender and was picking guys off no problem.

And yeah, that sniper rifle seems way overpowered. But snipers have always been pretty powerful in BF. The handguns seem overpowered and too accurate at long distances as well.

And definitely agreed on Metro being a bad map that encourages tons of camping.

The graphics are very nice though and movement super smooth. I can't wait to use vehicles.

Maybe it's just me, but the environmental destruction seems dialed way back. Not a whole lot of building and wall damage IMO.

Lastly, did the consoles get the beta early too for people that bought MOH? There are already some guys on the PS3 ranked in the 30s!

My keybinds work. Even changed a couple mid round
There are a ton of keys that won't bind. And the mouse buttons won't change. Other than left mouse, I never use default there. I use my thumb button for sights. Thankfully, my mouse software can change the binds easily. But I still can't get the other keys to bind to what I want. :/ But I have it respectable for now. Better than default. Good enough to lead a couple of rounds.

I will probably play a few times, but I am not gonna invest too much time in a buggy beta where I spent 1/2 of my first round stuck in a hole that I couldn't get out of until someone killed me. :hot:

Yeah, I'd run into dudes in the subway and spray them with a barrage of Automatic AR bullets, but it was no match for their semi-automatic handguns. Agree that it sucks you have to unlock the AR attachments for each country you play as.

Just went 27-15 and leveled up twice in the same round. My best round so far. I started off 20-2, so, the 7-13 ending doesn't sound as great, but I did set and blow B on the last objective to win the round for our guys to help seal the deal.

I don't think the Battle Report on the battlelog page is 100% correct, though. I'm sure a couple of the other guys were on my squad rather than who it lists, and someone from the other team was definitely in my squad. I don't think the Battlelog is working right yet.

Maelstrom and I had some good rounds tonight. I believe our team won nearly every round. Unfortunately, we were never on the same squad, though. I hope they fix the squad select before release.

I'm sure this will be fixed. We do need to remember that the beta build that we're playing was broken off from the main build that they are working on for release a long time ago. In all likelihood, the guys at Dice are working on/finishing up the actual release version, which is almost certainly 100X more polished and has all the features unlocked. This public beta probably isn't uncovering any new bugs. Its mostly to let us try the game and get some data on weapon balance.

just got to "play" Caspian border for approximately 4 seconds. Any time a spot opens up on one of the severs, I'm sure hundreds of people are trying to get in. So after like 25 tries, they appear to open up a new sever. I jump in and fills up from 4 players to 64 in less than 10 seconds. The pre-round ends, i get in a jeep, and Dice Shuts the server down.

I have video. Its pretty exhilarating.

Oh well, off to work.

Wait. Really? What's the idea behind this? Are there a lot of people who play significantly different loadouts when attacking vs. when defending?

You have to unlock each attachment for each gun like in cod. But once you do, it's unlocked for both sides. So if you unlock the m416 you can use it and all the attachments you have unlocked for it whether youre russis or the us.

Okay, that makes total sense. Thanks.

Is there a server browser currently? I have not looked around at all but that once, but all I saw was quick match.

 Nevermind. What is everyone's Battlelog ID for the invites? ffmadcow here.

So how are we doing the clan tag? They only give us 4 spaces, so the =FBG= from BC2 will not fly.

I jumped on PS3 last night:

- life span seems much shorter here. It felt like situations where I would've gone to low health in BC2 resulted in quick death in BF3.

- the metro map can be fun once you know the layout of the map. I like the cover possibilities in the subway and in the buildings at the end of the map. Maybe because the PS3 runs at 12v12, it didn't feel unfairly balanced towards the defender. Every match went to completion, but it wasn't a romp either.

- I'm not sure how you would take out a sniper who is prone in a big map. You might be able to spot him due to the light effect, but nailing him will be tough.

- I think I've gotten too used to the motion mines in BC2 - I missed them.

- Seeing the enemy is more difficult than BC2 but better than Vietnam.

Overall, I liked it. Slightly faster pace than BC2, much better sound.

Here's some random live gameplay I got from today:

http://youtu.be/sDZS_VvU_JA?hd=1

Watching it in HD is probably a good idea since the 360p render looks like a flaming bag of dog ####.
I managed to get on and get a couple of rounds (360 version) in this morning before I lost connection to the server in the middle of a match. I didn't even try to get back on.

I hope the graphics are improved in the full release. Visibility sucks a fat one and I'm guessing it's because it's pretty rough around the edges.

I thought it was just okay but 2 matches in a beta is obviously nowhere near enough time to make that call. Lots of potential.

For PC, is all we get the windowed dealio? I am not seeing the graphics options and it is a little annoying to have such a small screen. Maybe I need to explore the screens more.

Alt-Enter to go full-screen and Maelstrom pointed out last night that there's an option to make the full screen default so that it didn't hop back to windowed after every round. It's found in the Video settings.

so yeah....thats what BF is supposed to be like. The commentator is pretty funny too

Unfortunately, they've shut off the caspian border servers again

Couldn't control my weapons at 1800 dpi, which is my normal sensitivity for BC2...had to drop it down to 1200 and the game is now playable. I can actually KILL people now! Made it up to 11 one round.
