I've tried multiple times but I just can't get into Ghost.
I dont think i like the cardinal copia persona...i do like alot of their songs...catchy as ####....cirice ...pinnacle to the pit.....square hammer.....the new stuff...rats n dance macbre and not grabbing me the same way.......i do love the over the top satanic nonsense though.....surprised there isnt some outrage but really who has time in trumps world for metal outrage?

I'm with you.  I know I must be missing something because of all the love in here, but I haven't heard anything that made me want to hear it again.

A radio station I listen to started playing Rats by Ghost recently and I kind of like it.  Hadn't heard them before, but remember folks here talking about them.

since we're talking Ghost, and the new album drops tomorrow, here's an interview with Tobias (aka Cardinal Copia). gives a little insight to the history and creation of the band and his persona.

listening to the new(est) tracks on repeat over the weekend, i'd definitely say they sound more like a combination of Aldo Nova and the Scorpions, just with a better stage show and darker lyrical themes.

hope they make it back to NorCal in 2018.

Life is just a fantasy.....can you live this rantasy life.   ...

From Ghost’s Twitter:

“Tonight, in Milwaukee there was a medical emergency with one of our fans.  We decided not to continue out of respect to him and his family.  Ghost and all who work with us ask that you please send the family your thoughts, prayers and respect their privacy during this time.”

sounds like the fan went into cardiac arrest during intermission. Event staff performed CPR but he didn’t make it. RIP.

Passing away at a ghost show is very metal....

New album out to universally strong reviews.  Downloaded this morning and listened to about half of it.  Super-catchy, but they are really treading the line of "too hooky/mainstream" for me with this one.  I mean, they always are, but I need to hear this a few more times before I can decide.

Underoath came on Liquid Metal and I liked what I heard. Checked them out and they are a Christian band. Who would have thought. Plan on listening to them during my run today. Ill report back later

Anyone into these guys

Just trying to hook more people into the church of satan

The vox are so damn clean. Like the guitars though.

listened to it last night falling asleep ... well, more like passing out after a bunch of whiskey and the Warrior game. on my 3rd listen now, and i will say that the "new Ghoul" drummer take a lot more liberty with his fills, and i'm digging that.

You’re probably right. I just don’t feel like their vocals match their image or the content. Some of the new one is bordering on Meatloafian operatic rock.
I get what you're saying.  I never got into Dream Theater or Coheed & Cambria for the same reason.  However, I do like Papa/Cardinal/Tobias' voice.

I need to listen to the new record a bunch more before giving any kind of verdict.  Thus far, there are tracks that I love and ones I am lukewarm on (and that's being kind.)

first impressions on Prequelle song by song (listened through 6x) ... spoilers tags added.

"Ashes"

perfect intro considering the overall theme of the album. i must admit i'd never heard that particular second verse of "Ring A-Ring O' Roses" before

"Rats"

guessing most everyone has already heard this single previously. kick-### track to start the record. love the hook and the chorus. solo fits right in without trying too hard. kinda wish the outtro here had been made into a song itself...it may be the hardest "rock" on the album.

"Faith"

arguably the most "metal" song among the bunch. dig the intro and running scales interspersed in the song. pre-chorus and chorus really stuck in my head. at this point, it's either my favorite or 2nd favorite track on the album.

"See The Light"

one of the best mid-tempo songs here. lyrically, this comes off like a "break up song", albeit much darker, and reminds me of something Journey might have done 30 years ago with the synth solo and soaring vocals.

"Miasma"

one of two instrumentals on this album. gotta admit, i wasn't expecting that. one? sure. but two?? i dunno. anyway, i like the melody in this one, though it does come off a bit synth-heavy. might not be for everyone. drumming is what kept me interested.  and while it starts out slow-ish, it does crank up towards the end (reminds me of "Orion" in that regard). and i will say right now, on first listen i was gobsmacked by the sax solo at the end. i mean, completely unexpected. might as well have been Glen Frey or something, and i got a feeling it's gonna put a lot of people off. after the 5th-6th listen, it kinda makes sense in a whacky-schticky Ghost-sense-of-humor way.

"Dance Macabre"

ok, this is tantamout to KISS doing that disco-song back in the 70s. it's campy, catchy, hooky, geeky, and i'm guessing one of the encores in their live show. i loved it when i first heard it, and still do. the backing vocals are a nice layer, and this is that "rock the crowd, sing-along, radio-friendly" sort of song that hardcore Ghost fans with either love or hate #sellout

"Pro Memoria"

i like the song overall, though it's a little bit like a weaker version of "He Is". the strings in the intro sets a mood, and the keyboard throughout gives a little 80s hair metal ballad feel, and the guitar reminds me of what Savatage would have done back in the day. the lyrics are gripping, but i could see where they could come off as corny too. guess it depends what mood you're in. definitely a song the crowd will be singing at a show.

....more to come.

Based on my half a listen so far, I don't have any real disagreements with your assessment yet.  Pretty much in lockstep with you on every track.  I would like to subscribe to your album review newsletter, Quint.

I like it a lot. Don't love every track, but the album as a whole is excellent. I keep singing certain melodies over and over in my head.

I also can't remember the last metal album that garnered universal enthusiasm in reviews like this. Revolver made me laugh with this :

"Witch Image" delivers the helpful reminder that "While you sleep/In earthly delight/Someone's flesh/Is rotting tonight," embedded in music so blissfully hooky that you'll immediately want to high-five the person next to you and yell, "Dude! Someone's flesh is rotting tonight!"

Holy crap. I was talking to my son about Ghost tonight and how much i like rats.  He plays the song Square Hammer for me.  I've heard that on the radio and REALLY like it a lot.

Square Hammer and He Is are by far their two most instantly accessible songs, and both are great enough to hold up after many listens.

just to finish this:

"Witch Image"

one of the lesser tracks imo. it's catchy to be sure, but it's a little

too sing-songy in both the verse and chorus. the lyrics are borderline comical - as EG noted above - and it just sort of ends, without any kind of flourish. meh.

"Helvetesfonster"

absolutely my least favorite song on this record. down tempo, synth/keyboard dominated, and an instrumental. sounds like a cover of a Transiberian Orchestra B-side song. honestly, i think the only reason they recorded this song was to have something to play while Cardinal Copia gets his costume changed during the live show. 2/10 would not bang.

"Life Eternal"

time to whip out your Bic lighter (do they even sell those anymore?) and sway back and forth with arms raised high. if you like 80s power ballads, this is the song for you. this could be a Winger song, or Warrant, or Slaughter, or Firehouse, or ... well .... you get the idea. lyrics are insipid. hook is weak. and not even the subtle addition of chimes in the middle can save it. next to "Helvetesfonster", this is the weakest track containing words.

So I listened to the ghost album today after all the talk about it in here. I have never listened to them and only know a little of their shtick.

Surprised since I didnt think it was very metal. It wasn't bad, just not what I envisioned of a satan worshiping band (or at least that is their shtick)

A few of the songs reminded me of something I would have heard in an 80s movie like karate kid

I had a vague impression of not getting the love for Ghost.  I listened to the new one today, loved the first few tracks, and then went right back to not getting the love.  Thought the back half of the album was almost unlistenable.

:headbang:

Don't hear too many Aldo Nova references.

Ghost are a gateway drug to the more intense stuff.
Or a nice, relaxing break from the more intense stuff for some of us.

I like everything on the new one except for Dance Macabre, which oddly seems to be the most revered song on the album by critics/review sites.  To me, it just sounds TOO much (musically more so than lyrically) like something that would accompany a training montage in an 80s sports movie.

Royal Blood at Jannus June 12th.

Slayer and Lamb of God at the Orlando Amp June 15th.

Black Dahlia Murder at Jannus June 22nd

Uhh.  Live show boner.

I tried to get into these guys, but that singer makes my throat scratchy.
I love them, but I have to be in a certain mood.  That kind of chaos live is a sight.

I've been getting into a lot of instrumental bands in my old age.  Dad rock?  I'm not sure.  Pelican.  Russian Circles.  Karma to Burn.  All the heavy without the distracting vocals.  Being a heavy metal vocalist just isn't as "easy" as some people make it out to be.  It does take a lot of range, and a lot of guys just don't have it.

Yeah, metal vocals are tough. Almost no one can sing like Bruce Dickenson, and the super hardcore singers are all an acquired taste. Gojira is a band that does metal vocals perfectly, IMO.
