I didn't mean to insult your club, it was solid. Just that the final two were made up of a lot of current NBA players. Guys like the great George Mikan didn't have a chance in that thing.

I'm not convinced that will be enough. But I don't have a problem with you giving it a try.

I think he and Nipsey are overestimating it as well. 15 guys in here who know baseball took 270 players before him. Maybe we let him slide a few rounds too long given that his name does have some clout, but people who know baseball know that Satchel Paige didn't accomplish anything in MLB other than pitch in his 40's. Those would equate Paige to Walter Johnson in the vote are also the ones equating Fruit Loops to Lucky Charms. Perhaps that is 90% of the FFA, but I think that is an overestimation.

your forgetting that Paige is my #5 starter at best... well, maybe #4 lol, not sure if I'd put him over Gooden or not...

You're obviously planning on using Paige's Negro League career in explaining why he's on your roster. You wouldn't be able to use the "greatest ever" line otherwise.

The bottom line is this. Paige is one of the greatest pitchers of all-time and nobody who votes is going to care what the league parameters are in terms of allowing his Negro league numbers to be considered or not. You can write it a thousand times and it simply will not matter to the voters. They'll just know that he's considered one of the all-time greats and a hall of famer.

I dont believe everyone is so against that pick and yet some of those same people are insistent that our "other rules" like the 3rd year and no "worse" years dont work.If you want to keep things within the spirit of the draft, you can not arbitrarily dictate what picks are ok and what arent.This is a clear case - he mentions it. My point wasn't what you responded to. My point is that the pick was legal, and that the rules should not be changed. Just as I would have agreed with your argument for 3rd year or below before the draft, I would have agreed with Nipsey's argument against players like Satchel before the draft. I think in both cases, it's something where you can't change the rules midstream.

Many of you, perhaps most, are now asking, "Who the hell is Bob Elliott?" I don't blame you. After all, Bob not only had a boring name but he apparently played a rather forgettable career as well. At least, that appears to be the case on this web site, where he is one of those unfortunate players without any profile at all. The truth is, Bob Elliott was one of the finest third basemen in baseball history. The National League MVP in 1947 and a seven-time All-Star, he compiled a career OPS of .815 and drove in nearly 1,200 runs. He was also considered by some to be the finest fielding third baseman in the National League, all while earning the nickname "Mr. Team".

I really have nothing to add. I'll include the link when the rest of the guys mentioned on the page are taken, but the makes some interesting arguments on 3B-men in general

we seem to be going on runs now, since the first half of the draft. pitching, then relievers, now back up infielders ... I suppose there are some positions that are simply more scarce than others and when you need to fill a need, you only have so many chances at those positions.

I said Thomas was BETTER than Bonds at the plate pre-2000 when Bonds went Roid-crazy...
