Had to be one of the higher ranking players left..James mentioned that when he got elected to the HOF, he used his platform to blast the Hall for not electing him sooner. :rotflmao: Of course, this was in 1975, so the dude was probably pushing 80, but I thought that line was funny.I owe two descriptions...I'll start with the pick which seems to have disappointed a few people. I needed another outfielder and this pick fills that need. Averill was a 6 time All-Star for Cleveland. His career started late as he toiled away in semi-pro ball before Cleveland signed him as a 27 year.
Upon entering the league, his talent was apparent as he went 7 straight years in the top 9 in home runs.He played centerfield which is a plus as I have Williams and Delahanty also out there, neither of which are capable of doing it. He was also the starting CF for the AL in the first 5 All-Star games.
He also helped end Dizzy Dean's career in the 1937 All-Star game by injuring his toe on a line-drive.
