I agree some are becoming obsessed & fringing on taking it too far but let's not go over board. The reaction isn't IMO close to the initial offense. 

Also strictly a point of clarification we aren't talking a "couple hundred" but a couple thousand.

Messing with people IRL over a bet where no one is out any money and no one person is owed more than a couple hundred is taking it way too far.  And the only people who don't think messing with his wife is douchey are obviously douches themselves.

that's only true if we also intended to welsh in the event of a loss.  I intended to pay, and I think I can safely say everyone else did as well.  you are looking at the situation after we have the results of the wager, but you need to be considering it prior to knowing the results.  it's an abstract view and it might seem weird, but it's the right way to look at it.

Why do you keep saying no one is out of money? People that won the bet are out of their winnings. That is their money.

Nah, it isn't. If you owed me money and refused to pay I would definitely call your wife up hoping she paid what you owed me, and at the very least she would know her husband isn't a man.

I think it is the right thing to do. His poor wife needs deserves to know that he has a gambling problem and perhaps is hiding other things from her in his secret life of crime that could effect her well being. I can't believe you aren't thinking of the women and children you animal. 

 
usually the quickest way to get paid is letting the guy's wife know you are owed the money, because she will nag her husband to pay you. Nothing wrong or insane about that. Although, it is actually wrong to not pay people what they are owed.

I'm not advocating anything crazy but it wasn't a run-of-the-mill internet wager. It was a bet on probably the most repulsive election in history. cstu showed extreme hubris in both discourse and way too juicy odds he was offering. He baited people into taking a bet by challenging their manhood. Even if he won the bet he still comes off badly. So he ends up losing, skips town and the guys he needled incessantly should simply let it go? Nah.

I will say this.. some % of the time she gets pissed and maybe it ruins or strains their marriage.  I will admit that ruining a marriage >>>> $2100

luckily, no one really suggested calling the wife or ruining their marriage.  FC42 mentioned something briefly about his wife, and then a bunch of people inferred a bunch of stuff.  everyone needs to settle down.

 
No one is suggesting anything against the law or insane. Letting the guy's wife know he owes people money and refuses to pay isn't against the law or insane. I am totally fine with the people that are owed money doing that if they want to.

He is lucky he doesn't owe me money because I would without hesitation call his wife the moment I realized he wasn't going to pay up, and if their marriage got ruined because of it I wouldn't feel bad. it would be a consequence of his action, not mine.

 
If you ever lose a ton of money, more than you can lose, you work out some kind of deal. You don't skip town. You could do a payment plan.  So many options. I don't pretend to know what's going on in his real life, he could be dealing with tough times. Hopefully after some time has passed he comes back, offers and explanation and an apology and works something out.

Considering the expensive TV he is in the process of buying and the healthy commission checks his wife is pulling in, not seeing the tough times.  His arrogance and hypocrisy is really hard to get around.

It's obvious that the only reason the bet was made was because it was thought Hillary couldn't lose. There needs to be some cautionary tale for the next guy who thinks that a bet is a 100% lock and doesn't have the ability to pay on the back end.

In the future pick someone neutral and trust worthy that has plenty of money already like maurile or myself or Chet and send the bet money to them via PayPal. They won't steal it. When the bet is complete the third party will pay out.

If I were one of the people he owed I would call and email him until I got an answer.  That's as far as I'd take it unless he was as total jerk about it. Then maybe I'd sign him up for the turd of the month club

maybe someone should start a separate thread on the ethics of welshing on a bet and the ethically acceptable recourse of the scammed in that scenario.  that's not really what I'd like to see this thread turn into, tbh.

 
I wonder whether the issue for CSTU is the money or who he must pay the money to and why.

I've seen so much sh## from anti-Trump people since the election -- such over-the-top, petulant reactions -- that I'm willing to bet the Trump factor is greater than the money factor for CSTU welching.  He'd likely pay up to an opposing sports fan whose team beat his; but, in CSTU's mind, there's no way he's paying up to those deplorable vermin who just helped elect the next Hitler.  He wouldn't give them the satisfaction.
