The lap 1 red flag and tire changes were a perfect storm for a dull race, even by Monaco standards because it removed pit strategy and push laps from the equation. The circuit has never produced great racing but it still has unmatched tradition and aesthetics that are still worthwhile for me.

If you want to see a good Monaco race, check out the Formula 2 feature race from early Sunday morning (ESPN+). There still aren't a lot of overtakes but it was a lot more fun than the parade of the big cars later in the day.
 
I spoke up thread about how I can't believe the popularity of F1 when there are maybe a handful of "overtakes" in a race.
My daughter LOVES F1 but even she was bored with this race. Top 10 finished as they started? Come on.
And you can't blame the track. The other races are not much better.

Meanwhile the 500 had passing all over the place including the final turn of the last lap.

Since I can't afford to take my daughter to Vegas or Miami for F1, we are heading downtown this weekend for the Detroit GP.

IndyCar has always had an objectively better on-track product but F1 is still the pinnacle of the sport.

Have fun in Detroit. I'm glad your daughter is a fan. I could never get mine interested although she was disappointed Tony Kanaan retired.

I hope Gene sells. The team has achieved its original goal of increasing global brand recognition for his CNC business but no team using Haas' model is ever going to do better than pootling around the midfield.

Everyone has their price and maybe Haas will sell if Michael Andretti and his backers realize it's their only way onto the grid and overpay accordingly. But Haas' value is almost entirely in their F1 franchise. They have no factory to speak of and less intellectual property than the other teams.
 
Taped the F1 Kids version of the broadcast for the heck of it and it is brutal as they keep building up the importance of pit stops that are destined to never happen.

Side note the one kid is ridiculously good at calling the race - really on the mark with his phrasing and tempo.

Monaco is a brutal choice for this kind of of broadcast.

Whatever soft tire Pirelli decides to with next year..make THAT the hard tire and work your way down from there.

Or make it a three compound race instead of two.

Sounds like the reason Stewart-Haas is closing is Tony is off drag racing and Haas is invested in F1. They both became non-existent with NASCAR.
Therefore, it doesn't sound like he will be selling the F1 team.

Bummer if true. It doesn't seem like Haas is super invested monetarily or time-wise in the F1 team.

Haas F1 is supposedly profitable now with the cost cap, increased media revenues and Moneygram as the title sponsor. If this is true, Haas is sustainable as a backmarker team as long as the technical partnership with Ferrari remains in place. By comparison, his NASCAR team was bleeding money after losing major sponsors in recent years.

The latest rumor is that Renault is considering bailing as an engine supplier in 2026. There's limited cost/benefit of providing engines only to the in-house Alpine team. Alpine would supposedly continue as a team in name only, similar to how Saubers were branded as Alfa Romeos, but the cars from the Enstone factory would have PUs from another manufacturer. This would cut Renault's spend while providing a supplier like Audi or Honda to have another data point in the next cycle.

I would love to see an Andretti car on the F1 grid while Mario (and I) are still around to enjoy it but all doors seem closed at the moment.

Haas still seems to be run like the Oakland A's of F1 teams even if they are profitable. It'd be good for the sport for that team to change hands.

Haas still seems to be run like the Oakland A's of F1 teams even if they are profitable. It'd be good for the sport for that team to change hands.

I had to look. Haas best finish was 4th. I thought they maybe caught a podium with gros at some point.

What is the longest running team with no podium?

Yeah I wouldn't assume Stewart Haas closing portends anything with Haas F1 - if anything it split Gene's attention and with Tony checking out that feels a lot more like what hastened that team's demise

Always seems strange with the rebadgingd like Alfa Romeo. Then I remember that McLaren has done it for like forever lol.

One of the constants each season of "Drive To Survive" was former Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner looking dejected at the end of the race and saying "Guess I have to go phone Gene". I'm sure he dreaded those calls.
 
French and Italian media sources are reporting Alpine is bringing back Flavio Briatore as an advisor. Briatore was team principal for the Enstone team when they won championships as Benetton and Renault in the 90s and 00s. He left F1 in disgrace after his involvement in the "Crashgate" scandal when the team told Nelson Piquet Jr. to intentionally spin to help Alonso's championship fortunes. But for me, his biggest achievement will always be dating prime-era Naomi Campbell for years.

It's kind of an odd move to bring back a controversial figure who's been out of the sport for 16 years but Alpine is a strange team.

Man, for how expensive everything F1 related is, F1Tv for $80 a year seems like a steal.

Started with the 2019 German GP where Vettel had about 12 overtakes on the opening lap. Amaze
 
Silly season updates:

Ocon officially out at Alpine for 2025
Perez extended at Red Bull for two years
Sainz is still the main silly season domino but his options are limited
Red Bull rumored to be blocking Yuki from talking to other teams
F1 silly season is boring compared to MotoGP's
 
Smaller cars are a small step in the right direction although they're still limited by the size and weight of the hybrid unit. The manual override of MGU-K sounds suspiciously similar to push-to-pass although it can't be used in defense. The active aero is the most interesting bit but we'll have to wait and see how it works out in practice.

I don't place much credence in the FIA mockup; the real 2026 cars will look a lot different from the concept once the designers exploit all the loopholes in the technical specs.

Frequent safety cars and red flags in Montreal. The walls are very close to the racing line and there aren't many access roads for marshalls to clear wreckage compared to more modern purpose-built street circuits.

New softs on a restart would be handy. I'm sure that entered into Ferrari's thinking today but starting P11 and P12 cancels much of that advantage.
 
The decision was out of his hands but I'm happy Yuki has his 2025 RB seat settled early. The car has been consistently decent this year and he's certainly done enough to earn the extension.

It's only a one year option so Tsunoda's in the picture for the 2026 silly season provided he takes care of business vs. Lawson or Ricciardo. A mid-season promotion to the big team if Checo struggles would be surprising but not unprecedented. There's also the Honda-Aston Martin connection if Lance or Fred decide to retire.

And then of course the replay gets preempted by a stupid college world series game and then when the one stupid game ends I check to see if they finally put the F1 on and ESPN spoils the result.

Fun race. It's much more fun to watch and appreciate Verstappen on weekends when he doesn't have a dominant car.

I'm surprised McLaren didn't split their strategy during the last safety car. Having one of their cars on new tires would have given them more options in the final phase.

I loved when Max, George and Oscar pitted and Lando kept storming around. Seemed like if he boxed one lap after them it might have paid off. Terrible timing on that safety car when he was absolutely running away at the front.
