The race will be a lot better if Leclerc is ahead after turn 1
It was an interesting race.

And, it sets up for a fun finish to the season between the McLarens. But, there is nobody else in their league right now.

I thought Russell actually had his best race in a while - more aggressive than usual.

Ferrari laid an egg today, and I wonder what is going on at Red Bull. Have they made efforts to slow Max, make the cars a bit more even?

P4 for Leclerc is disappointing after running out front for the first stint but it's not a terrible result considering they had the third best car.

The bad news is Red Bull is only competitive on low downforce circuits. The good news is the next two races are Monza and Baku.

The Palou to Red Bull rumors are a bit of excitement in a dull silly season. Otherwise it's just the perpetually hot second seat at Alpine and the annual game of musical chairs for the three non-Max Red Bull cars.

I assume the Russell-Mercedes extension will eventually get done because nothing else makes sense for either party. :oldunsure:

I know there are still 10 races left in the season, but I suspect this is a critical race for Lando. At some point he has to prove to himself that he can beat Piastri in a race, and not just in Quali.

I am expecting Lando will get jumped by Verstappen at the start, and if he can't fight back, I think psychologically, he will be done.

Colton Herta named as Cadillac's test driver presumably to be combined with a campaign in F2. It's a huge challenge to move to Europe at the relatively advanced age of 25: new tracks, new competition and lots of managing the Pirellis. It'll be good if they can get him a ride for the final two race weekends in the Middle East. Any real seat time will be tremendously useful to correlate with his off-season sim prep.

What are the super license points from F2 compared to him running in F1 FP1 sessions? I heard he gains points from both, but the podcast wasn't clear on how many he got FP1 practice vs F2 season. Seems like the F! practice sessions would be better for him, but not if takes a lot longer tog et the points

With his 7th place finish in Indcar this year, Herta is currently at 35 points. He'll lose one of these next year leaving him six points short.

Herta could get enough SL points by finishing 8th in F2 next year and gain a few more points running FP1 sessions. The license is achievable but I think it'll be more important to pass the qualitative eye test in F2. He needs to show speed, racecraft and the ability to adapt quickly to everything new.

I'm guessing Herta is going to do a year in F2 in hopes he does well and that one of either Bottas/Perez performs particularly bad. I wish anybody luck who is trying to make a jump to another "side" of racing, I love the diversification of it.

It will be interesting to see two drivers coming off of hiatus who weren't driving all that well when they left get to terms with the 2026 regs, and a fast but perhaps incomplete American driver going up against Europe's best 17-20 year olds (mostly). All driving as part of a brand new team in F1. Lots of questions, will be exciting to get some answers.

Herta will bring more eyeballs to F2, which I've been touting here for years. It's a fun series with short races, inverted grids in the sprint races and a very uneven distribution of driver talent.

F2 is racing this weekend at Monza with Italian Leo Fornaroli leading the championship. I don't think it's a particularly strong field after all the promotions to F1 last year. The only current driver with a chance to be on the F1 grid next year is Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad who's 7th this season. The talent scouts for the teams don't seem to see Fornaroli as a comer even though he won F3 last year and is currently leading F2 as a rookie. The knock on him was that he doesn't win races but he's taken two sprints and a feature win over the past three race weekends.

Monaco extended to 2035 :)
-QG

Alonso will be 54
Antonelli will be 29
and the number of non-boring races will be 0.

Beautiful, historic track, but
I'm holding out hope the smaller cars help but yes, it will most likely be a very pretty and very boring race for the next 10 years
I don't think anything bigger than karts will help the racing. You can look back at old races from the 60s when the cars were tiny and it was still hard to overtake.

The most passing I've seen at Monaco was the Formula E race this year. They have a gimmick called attack mode where the car gets extra electrical energy and four-wheel drive for a few minutes at a time. Cars with attack mode were able to move through the field and then blocked like crazy when it expired.

I'd support putting them in karts for that race.

Great race from Verstappen and the Ferraris, particularly Hamilton.

I thought McLaren made the right call in swapping positions in the end - don't need the championship between teammates decided by a slow pit stop.

True though I was amused by Max's amusement at that call. Team orders to bite his tongue in the cool down room? :)

The team can make that call because of the 30 point advantage. Things might have been different If Norris hadn't had the DNF at Zandvoort

I think they make the same call.

Had a similar call last year, when Norris undercut Piastri, and Norris had to give the place up.

I don't think McLaren want a team error to cost either driver a championship - and a slow pit stop is a team error, not a driver error.

Ayrton Senna is rolling in his grave

Pit stops are a part of the race, a HUGE part of the race most times, I hate what they did.

I hope it happens again to Lando but there's a car between him and Piastri so baby Zak can't make them swap.

Yeah, Im not sure how I feel about it. I get why they did it, but what if after making Piastri fall back to 3rd, he and Leclerc got tangled up later at some point and Piastri got knocked out of the race and ended up outside the points. That would be a huge swing in the championship battle, and one that may not have occurred if they didnt make them swap.

I almost think at this point you just let things fall where they may, and let the drivers battle it out on track. The Constructors championship is all but sewn up already for McLaren, so no risk there.

This is why I can't take F1 seriously. Too much politics. Poor pit stop is part of the race. Oh well.
