*** OFFICIAL Google Nexus 7 Tablet Thread *** (1 Viewer)

Qualcomm recently released their quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor that easily beats the Tegra 3. No word yet on what devices will use it but there should be some out by the end of the year.
Qualcomm's leaked roadmap showed this available in Q1'13, so either they are ahead of schedule or that is their mass production time. I saw the benchmarks on their developer tablet they rolled out the other day. CPU performance best in the market now and the 3D graphics rendering is just behind Apple's in-house chip for the iPad 3. Of course benchmarks are different than real-world usage, but if more apps are written to take advantage of multi-core architectures (read: multi-threaded), this chip will shine.

For those that didn't order their tablet directly from google (benglasfan might be the only one)...did you still get the $25 google play credit? I'm considering ordering it from sears since I have a gift card, but I could also use the card on something else.

And you get a $10 Google Wallet gift card when you activate it on the tablet.

 Thanks for the answers guys.

Just bought one, partly because I suck at technology and want to learn. Step 1, how do you use the camera?

Could anyone speak on how kindle app or books works? Can you purchase through Amazon? How is the page quality compared to a kindle

It makes your device (assuming you are using a Nexus - my experience has been on iPad and iPhone) look like a Kindle when the app is open. Even better, if you have an actual Kindle or the Kindle app on another device everything will sync properly across all devices.

I've never used an actual Kindle, just Kindle app for Android. I use it all the time and like it.

Thanks. So you can use Amaozn store or google store. I was just "afraid" the Amazon stuff would be "cheap"

I have a cheap black and white kindle and a Kindle Fire in the house, and I just purchased a 16GB Samsung 10.1 tablet with a groupon deal for like $280 or something. The kindle app on the tablet is awesome, as is the tablet. But between the google sync and now the kindle sync, I pretty much have all personal and professional apps and docs at my disposal wherever I am. Very impressed with the whole thing. Best part about the kindle app is that I can see everything that happens on the Fire as my son uses it, so it almost acts like a spy program for me to keep track of what he is reading.

I think only Kindle books work on the Kindle. Maybe not, but I'm sure there is a file format that works on the kindle. The experience does not feel cheap - Amazon clearly wants people to use the Kindle ecosystme for all their reading needs regardless of what device its on.

Thanks. Yeah I know only kindle books work on kindle app, etc. I meant that google play store was your only option, which is not the case

The Kindle app is one of my favorite on my iDevices, so I assume the experience on ANdroid is similar. Enjoy!

I don't read much but for 250 - I'm debating on taking the plunge and wanted to know how well it worked for the wife, etc

Like I said, I like it. I'm still in the process of getting my tablet programed with what I need as I got it for work more than pleasure so my cloud drive stuff and productivity stuff has been my focus, but the Kindle Fire stores most of the Amazon Prime stuff I have in the cloud drive to begin with and the app on the table simply syncs to that. So like I said, I can see every book, and even where in the book, my son is as he is reading it. Haven't gone deeper to see if I can also pull videos and games or whatever else he is doing, but the books I have total control over.It really is amazing the cloud drive possibilities of these devices. Like I said, with my Samsung Tablet, my galaxy smartphone, his Kindle Fire, my cloud drives and the productivity apps and software that are also linked to my work and home computers, I pretty have total access to everything no matter where I am in the world. Very cool.

Install this app, then launch the camera by tapping the icon.P.S. you are no going to use it much, the built in camera is pretty much just for video chats.

I've had mine nearly a month and have buried my face in it for several hours most nights. Read three books, which is a minor victory. I'm using it way more than my old Transformer. The size is just perfect.

Is this only available online? I'm thinking of getting one but I need it by this weekend.
Avialable in stores. Office Depot, Staples, Walmart, Sam's Club for sure.

These things are out of stock all over town but I found one in a neighboring community. I'll pick it up tonight so now I have a couple questions.

Movies can I rent a movie download it and watch it later? This would be nice to do when flying. Is the google market the only place to get movies and apps? I think someone mentioned above that you could get an amazon app and use amazon content is this right?

You can read Amazon books with the Kindle app, but you can't use their video-on-demand service (exclusive to the Kindle). Google Play Movies is pretty good. I've rented a few already with no issues. You can download and watch them later.

Stopped at staples they only had 8gb in stock. How does this compare to the samsung that has micro usb memory? That seems like a good selling point

Is there a night-time reading app useable on the nexus 7 where it reverses the font so the background is black and the type is white?

Google's Play Books does this.ETA: Click on the Aa to bring up the font settings menu and select the night theme

Picked mine up about an hour ago. Had to drive to the next town over to find it and they only have 2 left now.

This is my first experience with a tablet of any kind. What are must have apps? What about videos, magazines and books, do I have to get them from the google store? Can you have different profiles on there? My wife and I will both be using it. Can you have different fb apps for different users?

Pulse and Google Currents are really nice for news. I like thumb keyboard as a replacement for the stock offering. Most stuff you'll get from the Play store. Doesn't support separate profiles yet; supposedly coming at some point. The Facebook app is a notoriously terrible. I recommend using their mobile site (or you can click 'request desktop site' in the browser).

"Yet" is the key word there... it is baked into the OS but is not activated yet.Check out a 3rd party app for Facebook. I've heard good things about friendcaster, but I've never used it.

For anyone with a Safari Books subscription, they finally released an Android app. The quality is suspect, but when it works, it's not too terrible. Hopefully some bug fixes in the future to fix issues with paging, especially for the Offline Bookbag (which is a nice feature). I wish more ebook apps supported Sepia backgrounds like Kindle.

Anyone know how to get your Google TV/Movies purchases to play on another device?
Pretty sure you just need the Play Movies app and you'll see your purchases in your library.
I let Mrs. SB borrow mine and she bought a TV show to watch while she was out of town. She didn't finish and I want her to be able to watch my movies on her device now. Obvious some DRM stripping is involved, but google hasn't turned up much. Even tried bing just in case google was censoring it. :tinfoilhat:

Should i wait to be on wifi before turNing this on the first time?

ETA: So what cases is everyone using?

Fire it up!Mrs. SB bought a Kindle Fire case for hers and it doesn't fit right (obviously). The official ones are available in the Play store now and I ordered mine last week.
