Official Great Works Draft (1 Viewer)

OK, guys, I have to leave anyhow, so:

Based on what's been written, including by the person who proposed kicking Misfit Blondes out in the first place, I won't wait until this afternoon. I withdraw the motion now. Misfit Blondes stays.

Furthermore, Misfit Blondes selection of the Industrial Revolution as a political idea is accepted. Also, Scott Norwood's selection of the Las Vegas Strip is accepted. There will be no further overruling of picks. We will simply let the category judges rank the picks as they see fit. All future picks will be accepted.

I wish you'd decide on no more overrulings before we took our last album, so I could take the one Hummus rejected. :goodposting:

MfB has been a royal PITA with these three overruled picks. But, I'm not a fan of kicking MfB out. Just leave the pick blank until a re-pick is made. Take the same approach if any of his other picks are overruled.

no way in hell should they be kicked out. loosen up. this is not a draft for people to "win"
:goodposting: Also, we declared Genedoc the winnah after the 7th round.

The remainder was just for edification and education.
I demand a recount!
As do ISo...did anybody else just add Planet Earth to their draft list?
GAD - When Anborn selected The Strip I decided my next pick was going to be Planet Earth. :(

Tim is put in an unwinnable position.

WTH, man. Our procedure for overruling picks works. No reason to make it an either MfB stays or we allow all picks deal. Just leave the pick blank until a re-pick is made. If no re-pick is made, the pick just stays blank.

Not much time for an in depth write up, but I'm going to go with something I know. Few discoveries in biology are more important that cell theory. Cell theory is to biology was atomic theory is to physics. It provides a basic framework for how things work. One of the 2 or 3 central discoveries that made cell theory clear was the discovery of the nucleus of a cell and the way it moved. Given that, we're closing out scientific discoveries with...

46.03 - Robert Brown discovers the Cell Nucleus/Brownian Motion - Scientific Discovery

That give us...

Galileo - Uniform rate

TH Morgan - Genes located on chromosomes

Brown - Cell Nucleus/Brownian Motion

Top 3 discoveries that underlie the fields of physics, genetics, and biology. Quite satisfied with that trio.

yeah lets keep the format the same, it's working out fine.... just skip the picks that are overruled, if they dont re-pick, they just forfeit the pick. it's pretty simple really. :goodposting:

[Why are you always so anxious to change things midstream? You've got a procedure for ruling on picks, it works, why not continue to use it?
Because it doesn't work. At least not for me. Certain people are deliberately making picks to try to annoy me. When this happens, and I overrule, then I get mocked for taking the draft "too seriously". And I probably do. I really enjoy all of the discussion about great works here. I also enjoy the competition end of this; I'm aware that some here don't. There's a lot of very bright people in this thread and I enjoy trying to best them and appreciate when I am bested. I think having a winner at the end is a great thing. I love intellectual competition and learning about new things, and debating what is best. These are the reasons I got involved.I didn't get involved for the endless haggling over what is and what is not an acceptable pick. I'll deal with it when I have to, and I don't mind when someone has an honest disagreement with me. But we all know that is not what MisfitBlondes has been doing. He has made three deliberate picks designed to mock the draft and challenge me. Who needs it? I'm tired of overruling people and then constantly having to put up with insults and everything else. So let the category judges decide how worthy these picks are. I should have done it a long time ago. If Misfit Blondes wants to make "The Immaculate Reception" as a play his next pick, fine. I'll evaluate it.

I just don't understand this at all. How can someone making a selection that you disagree with cause this complete and sudden apathy toward the draft?

All right. If that's what you guys want. I don't care.In that case, let's accept Chiwawas last two picks. They're good picks and she should not be punished for making them. The 43 pick will stay blank, and the Las Vegas Strip will not be accepted. Now I really have to leave. See you guys later.

oh my goodness you are taking this so personally. You are arrogant enough to think that 3 somewhat controversial picks were all just for your benefit? And if we were mocking the draft then why do we have over 40 very very good picks. As a side note I thought you already said you weren't going to judge our picks.

lets not get carried away.

I know there is a light at then end of the tunnel, but I'm starting to wonder if we should 'Old Yeller' this draft.
Kill the draft or kick MisfitBlondes and Norwood out and drop to 18.Those two teams are 95% of the b.s. in this draft.
?!?!?! are you serious? fwiw, outside of the studsdudds pick norwood made (all him)... pretty sure we've been (or at least I have) serious with all my picks. care to pick another that you think is bogus?WDW while owned by a single company (Disney), was never planned at the start to be what it is now. in fact plans have changed drastically from the original conception, and are ever changing still today. its been a significant work in progress by multiple individuals. there are plenty of non-Disney buildings and companies found within WDW that make up all of what WDW is.i took a 3 mile stretch on a single road... WDW is freaking the size of the entire city of san francisco.i'm either appealing the overruling of the strip, or appealing the acceptance of WDW as a single draftable entity. allowing one and not the other is a paradox to me.

Another album pick. This is an album that I really like, but one that doesn't get a lot of love, especially in the past decade or so.

46.04--Graceland-Paul Simon-Album

Released in 1986, Graceland was a fusion of Paul Simon's songwriting ability with the sounds of South Africa, as well as other traditonal American song roots. Graceland features an eclectic mixture of musical styles including pop, a cappella, isicathamiya, rock, and mbaqanga. Much of the album was recorded in South Africa and featured many South African musicians and groups. The worldwide success of the album introduced some of the musicians, especially the vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to global audiences of their own. The album also features legendary Ghanaian master drummer Okyerema Asante. Simon included American 'roots' influences with tracks featuring Zydeco and Tex-Mex musicians. The Everly Brothers sing harmony on the title track. Linda Ronstadt appears on the track "Under African Skies", the second verse of which Simon wrote based on her childhood experiences.

Graceland reached #3 in the US and won the Album of the Year Grammy award, while title song won the Record of the Year Grammy award, for 1986 and 1987 respectively.

This was one of the first CDs I ever bought (CDs were pretty exotic in 1986) and while I'm not crazy about the best known song on the album (You can Call Me Al), I like almost everything else on this disc.

Track listing

"The Boy in the Bubble" - 3:59

"Graceland" - 4:48

"I Know What I Know" - 3:13

"Gumboots" - 2:44

"Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" - 5:45

"You Can Call Me Al" - 4:39

"Under African Skies" - 3:37

"Homeless" - 3:48

"Crazy Love, Vol. II" - 4:18

"That Was Your Mother" - 2:52

"All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints" - 3:15

How in the world you think the Strip and WDW are comparable in anyway is a paradox. WDW was built by a single entity entirely under a common theme. The Las Vegas Strip was built by 20+ entities with 20+ themes. This isn't what I wanted when I made my pick. Not at all. I'll just change it to the Magic Kingdom and be done with it.

You don't need to do that, rodg. I upheld your pick, and rejected the Strip, for the reasons you stated. Unless Krista overrules me, these rulings stand.

No, I'm in agreement. To the extent there are other vendors in WDW, they are there under license from Disney. Completely different situation than taking part of a city, made up of an amalgamation of unconnected owners.

OK. Thank you both. I'm heading out to lunch then a meeting. I probably won't be back until after 2:30 Central. I'll update the site and spreadsheet when I return.

i have nothing against the WDW pick. I think its a solid pick. Hell, I'm a huge disney fan myself (I live over 12hrs away and have been upwards of 20 times). I'm just looking for what I feel is consistency. If you think the entirety of WDW was built by a single entity, all 47 square miles of it... maybe you aren't exactly sure all of what you drafted. the common theme of the WDW resort is "family vacation destination", if there's another or one more specific, let me know. there are at least 10 hotels within WDW that aren't owned/operated by disney, not to mention many restaurants, shopping, and other attractions. even of the locations built wholely by disney the theme varies drastically. The acceptance of WDW, as the entire resort, would be no different imo, than drafting a small city (or a large one). WDW is the planner for its resort, similar to how LAS plans the strip (through zoning and ordinances if nothing else).

BTW, I think anborn's been a great part of this draft.

I hate making picks in the middle of these squabbles. All anyone wants to do is talk about the squabble and not the picks.

BTW, anborn, you guys are up, aren't you?

I could get used to this power thing.REJECTED!!!!Weeeeeeee!

DC Thunder quietly having a top-notch draft. Great picl.
Thanks, Krista. I figured you'd like Tapestry. I'm just hoping Uncle H likes it too.
You know the answer to that one (although I'm not the album judge) . . .
I thought you were.
:lmao: I forgot, too, and I'm married to the album judge. :bag: :bag:Actually don't know how he feels about Tapestry. We don't own it, but I'd imagine he recognizes the quality as well.

42.15 Isao Takahata's Grave of The Fireflies (Wildcard)

Almost left this one off just because it's such a punch in the gut. One of the greatest accomplishments in the history of animated films (or even film history), and just as powerful as anything selected thus far. If you haven't seen this or just plain ask yourself "what the hell is that", I urge you to check it out.
Thank you for taking this.
:goodposting: Appreciation is much more fun than internal squabbles. Grave of The Fireflies is a freakin' masterpiece. I do wish more animated films had been taken, though.

Peristence of Memory

nevermind

Sorry guys- I've had little time for this the last day or so. I see that I have 3 picks to make... maybe more. I'll try and get through getting caught up with what's been going on since the GREAT CHILDREN'S BOOK DEBACLE of July 9th AKA KRISTA HAD A BAD DAY DEBACLE of July 9th.

I'll throw a couple picks up there in the mean time just to see if they stick:

Let it DRIZZLE!

43.11- Performance- Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence (1974 dir. Cassavetes)

She made me cringe so much in this, but emaphasize for her too. Much like Fennis.

44.10- Novel- Sometimes a Great Notion, Ken Kesey

Follows in the footsteps of Faulkner jumping time/character/space... took me a few tries to even penetrate the first pages of this, but once I did I was finished. Without a doubt my favorite novel and I'm ecstatic to take it regardless of where it stands in the novel judge's eyes.

45.11 Composition-

, Johann Strauss Jr. Can this one still be around?
