the original spaceship to God. it can only be truly appreciated by first seeing it pierce the sky from its promontory interrupting the plains outside Paris. as one approaches, one can feel nothing but overwhelmed that this structure is reaching heavenward. i normally prefer quiet halls of worship but, from its friezes to its filagree to its glass, every molecule of Chartres SCREAMS "glory to God!".

a few points:

- Change Gonna Come will score very highly with me. i would normally hold the fact that it wasn't a big hit against it, but there was no way radio was putting this song in heavy rotation in '64. And, tho the rendition matters little in the judging, i prefer the original. the late, great Chuck Leonard - who introduced white America to Otis & Wikkid Pikkitt & all the great non-Motown soul as late night DJ @ WABC - often played Cooke's version to close his show, saying that while Otis's was a warning, Sam's was a prayer & he preferred it that way.

- when the TV cat was initiated, my plan was to have SNL, Civil War & Lonesome Dove as my three (forgot how TV savvy y'all was). never even considered Civil War as a documentary. a documentary is telling a real human story in 2 hrs, CW is a history program using the documentary style. not even close

I'm pointing out why I believe it qualifies. All I see, so far, is people saying it doesn't belong but no one is actually stating why. The selection was made to be different than the rest of the plays selected but it was in no way meant to pick a fight.

The play category was designed for stage plays. It's not that hard to see that. A football "play" is not the same thing, nor should it be considered in the same category. If you want, you could argue that it could go in the sport record category and the play most consistently ranked the best all time in NFL history - whcih it is. It also might be the most well known and most replayed. Check Guiness. But it's not a "play" Just because it is a quasi-scripted act in front of an audience doesn't make it equal to actual plays on stage. If that's the case then John Quincy Adams' oral argument before the United States Supreme Court would fit into the category, and it doesn't.

Kant's Critique is a long overdue pick and deserves an extremely high ranking, IMO. Being a libertarian and still pretty much of an Ayn Rand fan, I'm not fond of Mr. Kant, but one can't deny his incredible importance to modern thought.

Brave New World is an incredible novel and highly influential. It's major theme is the question of whether progress and technology is uniformly good. It presents a "softer" totalitarian society than does 1984. I find it eerily predictive of our modern society with so many of us on some kind of medication to alter behavior.

It's not about opinion though. The category was designed for the medium that entertained for centuries before TV and movies. Most of human history was controlled by and entranced by the play. If you looked at the category and only thought of Shakespeare, you'd be considered narrow minded...I happened to look elsewhere and I'm not being taken seriously.

I'm not on a jet plane yet (have another hour or so before taxi comes).I've read the arguments and, though I think it's a creative and fun argument on MB's part, I'm not going to overrule tim's ruling on the "play". MB, you're better off repicking anyway, since tim is the plays judge.

I'm standing by my selection until Tim actually offers an opinion as to why it shouldn't be allowed. I've already stated I'm fine with it be ruled out but I don't think Tim should be allowed to act smug and not offer anything beyond a "no."

You're free to "stand by your selection." It will not be accepted. If you want to leave that slot blank, that's up to you.

I've offered my opinions as to why it should be allowed...Tim is just saying "no" and I'm not sure Tim fully believes the selection shouldn't be allowed. I think Tim is afraid that the category won't fall in line with how he believes things should run and allowing my pick will open up the category to different visions.

OK then, since you asked for it so many times, here is my reasoning:

When the "Immaculate Reception" was first selected as a "play" I figured it was a one line joke, not particularly funny but a smart little jibe at the rules, and I figured you weren't serious. When it turned out that you were serious I decided you were trying to derail the draft. There is no rational way to compare a sports "play" to theatre, and even to attempt to criticize such a comparison makes me look even more foolish than the one making the comparison in the first place. That's why I didn't respond. What annoys me so much about the whole thing, Misfit Blondes, is that I KNOW you're mocking the draft by this pick. How do I know it? Because I've come to respect your other selections, and you're commentary, and I know you're not a stupid guy. Only a stupid person could expect the rest of us to take such an argument as you have been making seriously, and therefore I ruled that out as a possibility. And while I fully expect you to respond to this post by protesting that you have been genuine all along, I believe that is also part of the mockery.

I don't know why you have chosen to attempt to derail the draft at this time. As I wrote, your other picks have been fine. Perhaps you will continue to persist in this attempt with other picks of a similar nature. I hope this is not the case.

That is my reasoning: to sum up, I do not consider a sports play to be what was meant; we were asking for theatre plays. Your choice is vetoed; please choose again or quit.

Tim is outspoken and has an opinion on everything...he hasn't said anything in regards to supporting his opinion for vetoing my selection. It meets the criteria and therefore should stand.

It doesn't come close to meeting the criteria.
