45.14 Waterfall - M C Escher (Painting)

Waterfall

Waterfall is a lithograph print by the Dutch artist M. C. Escher which was first printed in October, 1961. It shows an apparent paradox where water from the base of a waterfall appears to run uphill before reaching the top of the waterfall.

While most two-dimensional artists use relative proportions to create an illusion of depth, Escher here and elsewhere uses conflicting proportions to create the visual paradox. Waterfall has the structure of a Penrose triangle, an impossible object designed independently by Roger Penrose and Oscar Reutersvärd.
Not the most famous, but definitely my favorite MC Escher work.

45.16 - the Las Vegas Strip - Wildcard

If WDW can be taken as a whole, I don't see why this can't be.

A sight to see, from the architecture and the lights on the outside, to the collection of casinos and shows on the inside, to the entire mentality/culture of everyone who is there... an American spectacle for sure. 19 of the top 25 largest hotels in the world are found on this 3 mile stretch of road. Whether you agree with what takes place there or not... there's no denying that it's amazing.

I'm not sure what the problem with Disney World was, but the strip is multiple hotels, that are not related to each other or even planned to be considered a single unit.

WDW is owned and operated by one company. The Strip is not. Not the same thing, IMO.

OK, I guess I'm up...

I am woefully behind on my Album picks, so I'll take an album that today may get lumped in with the "chick singer-songwriters" but was, in fact, at the time of it's release, a ground-breaking album. This album was #1 in the US for 15 weeks and was on the charts for over 6 years. It won an Album of the Year Grammy, as well as containing the Song of the Year and Record of the year and Best Pop Vocal, Female. The album broke new ground for female singers, liberating them from over-produced Wall of Sound stuff or the shackles of the Motown soul song formula. Critic Robert Christgau says in "Christgau's Record Guide": "King has done for the female voice what countless singer-composers achieved years ago for the male: liberated it from technical decorum. She insists on being heard as she is – not raunchy and hot-to-trot or sweeet and be-yoo-ti-ful, just human, with all the cracks and imperfections that implies." (1981)

Yes I'll take at 45.17--Tapestry-Carole King-Album

Carole King, a Brill Building songwriter for years, was persuaded by James Taylor to record an album of her own songs and she agreed to do so in 1971. The result was Tapestry. Taylor then took one of the songs (You've Got a Friend)and made it a #1 hit for himself.

This album came out back when I was in college and it was in constant play along with a lot of much more heavy rockers. But there is just something about King's voice and the music of these songs that always takes me back to that place and time. You hard rock guys won't like this, but it's a great album.

Original vinyl release

Fits in nicely with your earlier emroidery painting pick.

Not the most famous, but definitely my favorite MC Escher work.
This is my 11th ranked classist painting from the late-Cretacious period. I find Escher's use of the primary color wheel particularly stunning in this piece - absolutely brilliant. Little known fact about this painting, it was originally painted as a 25th birthday present to Duke Ellington the 3rd of Volania, but as we all know, the Duke didn't quite make it to his quarter-centennial. :lmao:

Good morning. I love Tapestry.

There is a motion on the table to remove Team Misfit Blondes from this draft. I don't have to explain the reasons why; we all know them. Either you agree this is a good thing to do at this time, or you don't. If Misfit Blondes is removed, there will be no replacement and no evaluation of his picks. We wlll simply go with 19 drafters.

In order to make this happen, I need six "ayes" from other drafters. If we get six, the motion will carry. How do you vote?

I searched several different times on the front page and couldn't believe it when I saw that one of the finest American Actors of all time has yet to be represented with a selection. I'll close out our acting performances and rectify that injustice.

Spencer Bonaventure Tracy was nominated for nine (9) Academy Awards, winning two of them. Both are records. He's tied with Laurence Olivier for most nominations, and he's tied with several other dramatic luminaries for number of wins. No actor in history has been nominated or won more AA than Spencer Tracy. The challenge is selecting his greatest performance, a feet that's virtually impossible, but I'll try. My personal favorite was Inherit the Wind, but I've an unnatural affinity for the movie based on my previous profession. A close second is the performance of Tracy's that's received the most critical acclaim, and it's the one I'll go with.

45.18 - Spencer Tracy as Father Flanagan in Boy's Town - Acting Performance

Trailer

That give us a stable of....

Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront

Robert DeNiro - Raging Bull

Gary Cooper - High Noon

Spencer Tracy - Boy's Town

I think it is in poor form to try this when he is not around to state his case. Can this wait until tonight please?

Normally I would agree with you. But I think we've all heard his case. I don't think there is anything new to add here. If people don't want to see Misfit Blondes kicked out, then the votes will not be forthcoming. In the event we don't get 6 votes by this afternoon, I will accept his selection of "The Industrial Revolution" and I will accept all future selections of his in this draft without comment. At that point I will have pretty much reached BobbyLayne's attitude about this draft; I will finish it, but be apathetic as to the outcome. If that's what people want, so be it. I haven't reached that opinion yet. I really don't want to see this draft turned into a mockery.I am sorry, Chiwawa, that you've been put into this position. I have found your picks to be excellent and thought-provoking.

I'm kind of ambivilent about MfB. He helped me out by making a bunch of picks for me in one of the previous drafts and he did it based on lists I sent him with no shennanigans. I also didn't get as bent out of shape by his rankings of Tiger Woods low in the judging in that draft as other did. But his obtuseness on not seeing why certain picks aren't kosher seems to be a little over the top and he does seem to make tose picks for controversys sake alone.

So I'm ambivilent... :lmao:
