But that's OK. In the battlegrounds, any Republican that votes for Johnson helps Hillary.

I was really hoping Hill would try to appeal to the Bernie audience, and she would have at least made me think with another candidate. I don't see that with this selection. I know their ideas were a bit contrasting in areas (H and Bern), but I think there's a lot of votes to the far left that she just left on the table, or in some individual cases, risks alienating altogether.

Fair enough.  I personally didn't care about appealing to Sanders supporters.  I feel most will fall in line.  I'd rather have someone more middle of the road to appeal to independents.  The fact that Kaine was a popular governor and senator helps strengthen her chances in an important battleground state as well.

You missed the context.  If she's overestimating how many anti-Trump GOPers she could pick up and underestimating the number of progressives she could lose, that's a big problem.  Agree?

I switch between optimism and pessimism. 

But I believe that if Trump wins, then it really doesn't matter what Hillary might have done (and I absolutely reject the notion that another candidate could have beaten him.) 

This election is not about Hillary Clinton, or Barack Obama. It's about Donald Trump. If Hillary wins, it will be because a majority of Americans came to their senses and rejected Trump. If Trump wins, it will be because at this time in our history a majority of Americans decided that they wanted us to turn inward as a nation and retreat from the world, and because we allowed fear and xenophobia to overwhelm us. So be it.

And you are overestimating the number of Progressives she might lose. Do you think the Evangelical vote is going to switch over to Hillary when Trump pivots on Gay rights and Abortion? No, they will grit their teeth or not show up altogether.

Same thing with Hilary. Though I don't see her losing many progressives. Some may stay home, but most will grit their teeth and vote for Hillary...Because they don't want bat-s*** crazy, thin skinned Donald in the WH

Sanders would have been about issues.  This is about HRC and her bad decisions.

I'm not actually estimating or arguing a specific point, just wondering about how different scenarios could play out.  You could easily be correct when all is said and done.

Tim you have criticized Hillary constantly for screaming in her speeches and not speaking in a normal voice, yet Trump was screaming during his entire harangue last night, yet you praised him on his delivery. (?).

I am with you on switching... But i am feeling optimism today. Trump just will not be able to handle the next 100 days or so and I think Hillary will get a decent sized boost in the polls next week to give her a cushion.

But as you probably know, that could change tomorrow

 
If Trump doesn't close the gap considerably come Monday, he's toast.   With the email ruling and the RNC in the past, there's nothing else that's going to give him a boost.

I'd guess I'm more liberal than 95+% of people on this board, and I am happy with the pick, and not just for strategic reasons.

I caucused for Bernie because, though I didn't agree with every position he had, he aligned with many of my views and I wanted the party to acknowledge its left wing.  Likewise I certainly don't agree with Kaine on all positions, but we're much more aligned than different - a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood and opposition to the death penalty are huge for me - and I love a guy with a great reputation, integrity and intelligence.

I wanted Cory Booker just because I've been a huge fan of his from the "Street Fight" days (if you haven't seen the documentary, see it now), but letting Chris Christie fill that seat would not have been a great move.

Anyway, just an anecdotal perspective from one far-left voter.

ETA:  Actually, make that two far-left voters.  Mr krista feels the same way, and I think he's even further to the left.

Honestly? Because it's OK when certain men scream. (Not every man, but it works for Trump. It has worked for other demagogues as well.) When Hillary does it it sounds shrill. 

 
This VP is the signal that Hillary is going to play ball. In any other life Kaine is a Republican. This guy is one of the few that can give Hillary a run in the bought dept. I swear this would have been the Republican ticket when I was much younger.

Oh yeah and liberal Hillary? Yeah stake through that lie's heart.

Don't dislike Kaine, and he checks a few boxes, but snoozefest.

I would have been genuinely enthused about this election if whatshername had chosen Booker. I strongly suspect that she was a little too insecure to select somebody that people would overwhelmingly like more than her.

Kaine's a solid pick.  Probably won't get her anything, but won't hurt her either.  Similar to the Paul Ryan pick by Romney.  Good soldier, will do as told, and kiss as many babies and hug as many grandmas as needed.

And the point of Kaine is a direct appeal to Republicans and conservatives.

 
And VA doesn't matter, that is locked up, Hillary is going for NC, GA, AR, FL, & maybe a couple other Southern states (yes).

I'm hopeful that one's conscience isn't static but instead continues to take in information that enhances its development.

Regardless, I don't think Mr krista or I would try to convince NCC of anything.  Mr krista because he doesn't inhabit this forum enough (he only popped in to say hi because he likes tim) and me because I respect NCC and know anyway that he wouldn't be swayed.  

 
So will this Kaine guy make a good president? It would mean we have hope. If so, when the crook gets in we can start the impeachment process immediately.

I expect some completely bogus 11th hour accusation from his camp. A "sources say Hillary ###### Assad in college" type thing. A more aggressive not sayin', just sayin'.
