*** Official Jaguars Thread - Team Putting #DTWD to The Test *** (4 Viewers)

The knock on Brandon Allen was arm strength. So they signed a journeyman QB with limited arm strength.

I think they picked him up because of his familiarity with Marrone's system from Syracuse, and his fast release. They want a game manager who can support a run-first/def game plan. Who knows if he can, but Nassib might be the only FA QB who could come right in and support that plan.

Bortles is terrible, so something had to be done. At least the QB crop next year is supposed to be good and deep.

I'm calling my shot now - Bortles starts the game vs Ravens but doesn't finish it. Not sure whether it's by injury or benching. Or a benching they try to blame on an injury.

Y'all may know I'm a Titans fan, and I'm not here to gloat.

But WTF is wrong with your front office? Hang on to Blake Bortles, why?

I used to respect Tom Coughlin a lot but for Pete's sake, why can't he make the tough decisions?

My guess is he let Caldwell hold onto his guy for a year so TC can go to Khan and say "Let me bring in my own GM." Basically giving Caldwell enough rope to hang himself. Of course, the number of folks who would want to walk into a situation with TC as your boss and Marrone as your coach is limited. Maybe bring somebody in and give him the Player Personnel Director title.

That's fair. I hadn't realized Caldwell had't been fired also

Your line was better than I expected. Many teams have been foolish and drafted a special QB before they had a decent Oline in place. They don't run to the left so it just appears they are better but I figure so. If that's shored up, then it should be time to replace Bortles. If not, then I would see if they can't get a lineman and the QB they need. It's no good to draft a special QB and watch him get sacked 40 times. We've all seen teams do that.

I think they're rebuilding Bortles and we're going to have to see how he does later in the year. His passes have been short and very simple. The routes, the movement before the snap, they made the offense quite elementary for him. He wasn't good but he wasn't bad either. The dopey throws are gone. If I'm right, they'll add a bit to the O each week and spoonfeed him so that later in the year it's somewhat of a typical offense. Now is just vanilla though

I watched the Texans and Titans games and the INTs weren't even his fault. Was a throw behind the WR sure, but if he got his hands on it he should have caught it. Every throw won't be perfect and doesn't have to be. You can't hold a QB to that standard. I remember people thinking Vince Young was good and he threw passes in the dirt. There's gotta be some plays where you're like yes it could be thrown better but you got your hands on it so catch it. Bortles shouldn't get all the blame for everything.

If you can't see Coughlin in this team, you're blind. They've got two lines that love to hit and a bruising back behind them. They also have quite understated depth at RB. The secondary is loaded with talent and he seemed to have no interest in keeping the guy that can't cover.

Lee is not very good. Hurns is a fine complimentary WR and I like him, but I have never agreed with the praise people here give Lee and he never shows it on the field. Y'all are stuck on his predraft ranking. As a 3rd WR, fine Lee can be that guy. He's no stud like ARob. I know they didn't have a choice in putting him there, but he so can't handle that job. Putting DeDe on IR with a hangnail was an oops. I'm super curious of him when he returns in week 8 or 9 or whatever. He's either yet another bust from OU or the one that finally pans out.

Coughlin didn't have 53 picks. It stinks when your team is in rebuild mode and it makes you impatient. Oh how I understand that feeling, but it takes more than one offseason. At least some of the youngsters are getting their experience. Ramsey is OMG special but apparently he had to learn to shush so Henry ran him over and he's been sore this week. He'll be fine and that's just a lump he has to take. Jack is stupid fast for a LB. He reminds me more of special safeties than any LB.

If they get to week 12 and have a terrible record, I'd pull some gems and treat it like preseason II. See Yeldon, see Nassib...get a real good evaluation going rather than how we guess on backups. Don't risk getting Ramsey hurt but see if some young backup has some chops to him.

I agree with this.  I also think it’s way to early to give up on Bortles

Quarterbacks would be statistically better off throwing the ball away as opposed to targeting Jalen Ramsey

This is the part I agree with the most-

- I definitely agree about the Coughlin influence, and Bortles this year reminds me of when TC refused to let Eli lose it for him. Feed the running game, give the QB some throws he's comfortable with and play defense.

- the part about coverage, I would add that they finally have a coach that gets Poz off the field in obv passing situations

- Yeah, I always though Lee was an exceptional WR3. Hurns I thought had a chance to be a WR1B catching the tough pass at money time (like an Anquan Boldin) but he needs to stay healthy, Westbrook had surgery for core muscle injury (sports hernia???) so he probably needed at least 4 to 6 weeks.

Seems weird to say that a Week 6 game between the Jags and Rams is a big game but it is. Both at 3-2 with a share of their respective division. If the AFC South wasn't already wide open, this past weekend left no doubt. Texans appear to have found a QB but their pass rush has been decimated. Titans have to hope Mariota gets healthy quickly. And the Colts can't play a winless team every week.

Jags are still a very flawed team. No doubt the Rams will run the ball against that defense and they have the personnel to stop Fournette. But if you overlook the Jags or you insist on throwing against their talented corners, it could be a very long day for you. Jags finally have coaching that are not afraid to limit the impact that Bortles can have on the W/L.

Sunday is also the Jags' first game in Jacksonville in roughly a month (Week 2 vs Titans).

Yup, still flawed. As Bortles goes, the team goes. But I am enjoying Jaguars football for the first time in almost a decade. I didn't expect to match last years win total already.

@ESPNStatsInfo

The Jaguars have 3 wins by 20+ points this season. They had 3 wins by 20+ points in their previous 7 season combined.

That's a lot of suckitude punctuated by spurts of mediocrity

@JohnOehser: 4.The Jaguars are alone in first place in the AFC South in October for first time since 2004; last led division after September in 2010.

Can we please put the "Eli to Jaguars" rumors to rest?

Are people conveniently forgetting that during Eli's first championship, Coughlin essentially took the ball out of Eli's hand? If they want to shackle Bortles because he is penchant to throw a pick, then why trade for a veteran with a callous disregard for the ball (and a big contract)?

Yes, Eli would definitely be an improvement over Bortles but I really think that they are looking for more of a "game manager" who can hand the ball off and not leave the defense on a short field.

Plus, Eli already has a couple rings. Not sure how ecstatic he'd be to go from a marketing capital to the backwaters of Cowford.

You know what? Forget everything I just said. I couldn't be wronger if I tried.

Not only is Bortles bad but he is hot garbage.

Even Bad Eli approximates an NFL quarterback. Bortles is the suckiest suck to ever suck.

No sense running Fournette into the ground for that loser.

I still don't think Eli would accept a trade but if you could trade a 2018 3rd and a conditional 2019 3rd/4th, sure go for it.

Anything more than that is a pipedream for NYG fans for an overpaid QB on the downside of his career with a no-trade clause.

You know, this team could be 5-1 or maybe even undefeated if they had even average quarterback play. That's how bad Bortles has been. He is getting worse, too.

The fact that the front office went into the year with Bortles and Henne as their QB options bothers me to no end. Talent wasted. ####.

Monday Marrone blamed special teams, pass protection and the need to get Marqise Lee the ball more.

Hmmm, who didn't h5 m5ntion?

It's like they refuse to call him out and say that he's sucked. Fragile ego, most likely. It really puts a damper on this year. And if I read another thing about having patience, I'm going to lose it. What, a decade of suffering isn't long enough?

This team needs to do whatever is necessary in order to get a signal caller in the offseason. Do that and the wins will come.

Press is guilty too. Some of them will say he's "inconsistent".

1 decent game and 5 bad ones is not inconsistent.

Marrone will be one and done in Jax
I don't see this happening at all. Marrone is doing everything Coughlin wants. And there's are reasonable chance that they double their win total from last year.

Bortles play buys Marrone time.

Stay tuned. Bye week coming up so we won't know anything for about 10 days

 @ryanohalloran

#Jaguars LT Cam Robinson left locker room in walking boot and crutches. Team calling it a sprained ankle.

A very telling Stat - Brissett targeted WR TY Hilton  and Don'te Moncrief 12 times combined and the total results were 4/57.

Even more telling, they combined for 1 catch for 10 yards through the first 3 quarters. The other 3-47 came on the final 2 drives in the 4th.

This article is filled with "here are the things we need to do better".  It's the anti-Gus approach. I'm here for it.

Lose to the Jags and drama is sure to follow. Consider -

Week 1 at Texans = Tom Savage has Qb rating of 7 and gets pulled mid-game for DeShaun Watson apparently for good.

Week 3 Ravens (London) = Ravens getting blown out. Harbaugh blames London and how far the hotel is from the stadium.

Week 5 at Steelers = Steelers go in with terrible gameplan, Fournette races them out to big lead and Ben keeps throwing at the talented corners. Afterward Ben wonders aloud if he's washed out.

Week 7 at Colts = Jags get out to big lead and Colts passing game gets shut down as Brissett gets sacked quicker than an NBA coach. TY Hilton throws OL under bus despite roughly half of sacks being coverage sacks.

However, this is a step in the right direction. It used to be losing to the Jags meant the coach was getting fired. Of course with Pagano, that's still possible.
