*** Official Jaguars Thread - Team Putting #DTWD to The Test *** (3 Viewers)

Disappointed but can come to terms with it if it means resigning Colvin and perhaps Dareus in an effort to replicate the 17 formula.  They do need a play maker receiver and that’s not Marquise.  Not sure why there isn’t more buzz about Trey Burton...what a great fit he’d be

Wow. Letting Robinson walk for 3/42?

Makes me wonder if they ever actually negotiated.

And now the Sammy Watkins rumors. Ugh. Downgrade and he probably won't be much cheaper.

I bet it's over. I'll speculate that they tried to re-sign him to a low-ball or incentive-laden contract and he rightfully rejected it.

I'm thinking that they believe that (a) this year is a wash as he comes back from his ACL tear and (b) they werethisclose to going to the Super Bowl without him anyway.
This is probably the answer. Bears guaranteed 25 out of the 42 mil. Jags gtd money probably much lower. Heck if they wanted to guarantee 16 Mil, they could have tagged him.

Former Panthers’ G Andrew Norwell intends to sign with the Jaguars on a 5-year deal for $66.5 million, including $30M fully guaranteed, source tells ESPN. He is going to become NFL’s highest paid guard - $13.3 million average.

Oh, hello! I didn't expect this one at all.

Will be looking to pass even less now. Which is a good thing.

I feel bad for this reporter guy. This was posted on Rotoworld at 9:00 last night.  He pulled a Jason Cole...

North Jersey's Art Stapleton reports free agent OG Andrew Norwell has narrowed his three finalists to the Giants, 49ers, and Colts.

One league source reportedly told Stapleton the Giants are "all-in" on Norwell. The All-Pro guard has been linked to the Giants all offseason, but it appears the cap-flush 49ers and Colts are making one last push. Browns RG Kevin Zeitler received $12 million annually last offseason and Norwell's deal is expected to exceed that.

I was looking at contract numbers and then some stats.

Bruce Ellington WR 2017:  11 games, 6 starts, 29 receptions, 11.4ypc, 330 yards, 2TD
Donte Moncrief WR 2017:  12 games, 8 starts, 26 receptions, 15.0ypc, 391 yards, 2TD.

Bruce Ellington 2018 contract: 1 year, $1.25 million.
Donte Moncrief 2018 contraact:  1 year, $9.6 million fully guaranteed plus $2m more in incentives.
Jordy Nelson got $7.5m a year
Crabtree got $7m a year.
Albert Wilson $8m a year.
Amendola $6m a year.

Why are you guys paying so much for Moncrief, up to $11.6m?  Seems like a total aberration in the WR market.

I'm not too sure to be honest. I think they might have panicked a bit.

They were trying to block the Ravens from swooping in and offering him Ryan Grant money.

:bag:

Let me say this- I love Arob and think it was a mistake to let him walk. And I also think they paid too much money for Moncrief's one year contract. But the Jags didn't choose to sign Moncrief instead of tagging Arob. They chose to prioritize the line with Andrew Norwell. Allen Hurns wasn't coming back for $7M/year for multiple years.  His replacements are already on the roster and got valuable experience due to Hurns' unavailability. Given the crazy WR contracts handed out during this free agency period, Hurns would have been traded if GM's deemed him worth it. They simply did not. It's also silly to compare multi-year contracts with one year contracts; they're not very relatable.

From an outsiders perspective, it sure feels like the Jags have gotten worse this offseason. Norwell is an excellent get, but Colvin, Posluszny, Hurns, Robinson and Lewis are all good to very good players, and they were replaced by either nothing, or extremely questionable guys like Moncrief, ASJ, or Hayden.

Last year:

Robinson- 1 catch, 17 yards, torn ACL- To be fair they got worse here going from Arob to DM.

Poz- was all but phased out. Two down linebacker in a nickel NFL.

Hurns-39/484/2. In fact, his two year total was 74/961/5. Keelan Cole or Dede Westbrook- both are upgrades.

I'm not going to defend the Hayden signing. Colvin>>>>>Hayden. Colvin is an excellent corner and he'll do well in HOU. But he wanted to play outside and get paid as such. Given AJ Bouye's contract and Jalen Ramsey's eventual mammoth contract, they weren't brining him back.

Marcedes Lewis can block really well. But he put up 24/318/5 last year and he has 78/919/8 over the last 4 years combined. Not good, Bob.

The plan obviously was not to one-for-one "replace" players; few teams operate that way.  Pay for what you value most, and make tough business decisions in an effort to improve the team overall.

As a Jags fan, I don't see Hurns or Lewis as "very good players".  Hurns is an undrafted JAG who put up big numbers in a season where Bortles had to throw a lot more that the team is planning to going forward.  Since then, he has been injured and relatively ineffective, and is not as good as Westbrook or Cole.

Marcedes is a a team leader and good blocker, but has not caught more than 25 passes since 2012.

You keep guys like Hurns and Lewis around (and pay them) when you are not very good.  You move on from them when you get better and have options.

Difficult to move on from ARob, but Moncrief is the same type of big-bodied receiver, albeit without the dominant year Robinson had in 2015.  But going forward, I'm not sure this team is being designed to have one player who receives 150 targets (as ARob did in 2015 AND 2016).  So you don't pay $14M for a great receiver who receives only 100-105 targets.  Maybe they paid too much for Moncrief on the one year deal, but it was what his market was demanding

I did really want to keep Colvin, and recognize that Hayden is a pale comparison.

Jags fans thoughts on Keelan Cole in 2018 with all that's gone on with the WR corp changes?
I think Keelan Cole starts the season as being the WR4 on the Jaguars.  He will be behind Marquis Lee, Donte Moncrief, and Dede Westbrook based on the contract signings of Lee and Moncrief, and behind Westbrook based on draft status and talent.  I'm disappointed that he'll be WR4 because I think the Jaguars would be okay with Lee, Westbrook, and Cole with 1 more year of experience, I think they overpaid for 1 year of Moncrief.  They probably could have drafted a WR to fill the depth chart beyond Lee, Westbrook, and Cole.

The Jags traded for Cody Kessler. It's a conditional 7th, which I imagine is tied to him being on the roster for a determined number of games.

Those who hoped for a QB in the first or second round- don't hold your breath.

They are in win now mode and I see the following positions being drafted in the first: OG/OT, LB , or TE.

Jaguars will unveil new uniforms tomorrow afternoon.

One problem,  signage at the airport concourse was changed tonight to include the new uniform.

They aren't inspiring by any means, but people complained about the last uniforms and helmet. Can't make anyone happy these days. Historically I always felt like the Jaguars jerseys were just a bit more unusual/dated from the majority of the rest of the league. These jerseys are very basic, but almost on par with teams such as the Raiders. Which I can't complain about. They are more likely to withstand the test of time with changing styles.

I couldn't care less what they decided to come out with. As long as they didn't add some obnoxious neon color as a gimmicky accent.

Simple and neat. Big fan. Happy to see the gold go away.

And the upgrade from the two-tone helmet is a major win.

Call me boring, old, traditional... but I like the simple and neat look. The teal jerseys are pretty neat, my favorite of the 3. the Black and White I like equally behind the Teal. Also happy to see gold go away. Always been rooting for the Jags since they expanded just being such a mismanaged under dog.

Speaking of dogs... apparently JAX has an in-house dog park. People can bring their dogs to cheer on the cats!

I sense some chip-on-the-shoulder material coming from the team. Good.

To be honest though, MNF wrecks the team's schedule the following week. So, it's not a terrible thing.

And the more I look at the new uniforms, the more I love them. So nice.
and Monday Night is no longer the premier games - do they have any Sunday Night games?

Still very strange for a team that was a quarter away from a Super Bowl to get no prime time love.  They are an exciting team to watch.
Yeah I would have figured they'd get at least two SNF or one SNF and one MNF. I guess they just don't have the national draw yet, but if they keep it up we'll see a few more.

I can see Week 17 HOU v. JAX possibly being for the division and getting flexed into SNF.

My thoughts on a couple of news items this week.

I really like the new helmet, much more so than the new uniforms.  I don't hate the new uniforms, but they are very plain looking.  I believe I read that the teal uniforms will only be worn on Thursdays or special occasions.  I don't hate the black uniforms, but I would love to see the teal uniforms used instead of the black and keep the whites as the home/away uniform, whichever it is.

I am glad that the Jaguars have only prime-time games.  I want my team to have as little disruption from the normal weekly routine.  The two prime-time games and the London game are enough.  The other reason I want as few prime-time games, is that I pay for the NFL package to watch the Jaguars games, so the more games not on cable tv, the more value I'm getting for my money.
