*** Official Jaguars Thread - Team Putting #DTWD to The Test *** (2 Viewers)

I can't disagree with Peter King enough on his mock draft for Jags.  Look, the Moncrief signing was not good value but they're paying Moncrief and Lee starter money on new contracts.  I know the fantasy community and national writers view WR as a need but not sure the Jags do.

I can't see the Jags making this pick with Will Hernandez and Vander Esch still on the board. Those are also two areas of need. Real need. Not to mention the need for a TE and every TE still on the board.

Overall I think they're a candidate to move down.

29. JACKSONVILLE—CHRISTIAN KIRK, WR, TEXAS A&M

The Jags can’t love any of the wideouts left, but they’ve got a need, and Kirk was hugely productive as a college player if not particularly explosive. He had 80, 83 and 71 catches, with 26 total touchdowns, in his three collegiate seasons, and the Jaguars need a producer right now after the offseason losses of Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns. Things turn over quickly in Jacksonville, and Kirk will have to produce right away.

Funny thing is moncrief and Lee could easily be their 3rd and 4th best WRs. Cole should develop as should Dede. Agree with your point, although I hope Vander esch doesn't make it past your rival to the north (Titans).

Safe pick- Hernandez

Sexy pick - Mark Andrews or pass catching TE

Sexier pick - Mason Rudolph or QB

Yeah Rudolph has a 2nd round grade but if he's there at 29 the fifth year option makes it easier to red shirt a year.

Rookie WR's don't typically produce much, so the reasoning behind this mock pick is flawed by King. WR is a need, but not at a "must produce this year" level. It's not realistic.

There's a lot of hype for Mike Gesicki; I don't see them spending a high pick for a one-dimensional, pass-catching TE. This teams MO is to pound the ball and a pass catch only TE would be contrary to that.

I don't see a LB being the 1st round pick either. It is also a need, but given the amount of nickel being played, Telvin and Myles Jack (wasn't down) aren't coming off the field.

I see the pick being an OL or an all around TE.  If he's there Will Hernandez is a perfect fit. Conner Williams would work, as well. If it's a TE, I think Hayden Hurst would appeal to them (I'm not a fan of this.)

Personally, with pick #29 I'd like to see an offensive lineman picked. Hernandez, Wynn, Williams, Ragnow, Corbett, or Daniels is good by me.

@HaysCarlyon #Jaguars owner Shad Khan visibly frustrated over local reaction to his potential purchase of Wembley Stadium. Basically said “calm down.” Motioned several times to the upgrades here in EverBank Field that he has created during on-field presser.

Well, it's not great timing, Shad. And we're a bit touchy about relocation talks.

@ryanoholloran

5. Khan was defiant tonight, more so than talking about any #Jaguars subject over the years. Not saying if it's right or wrong, but it does make for good copy.

6. Khan on today: "Every time there’s a transition, it has visibility and you folks start connecting dots that shouldn’t be connected.”
I disgree. "You folks' -- local media handled it well today. Non-Jax media is who ran with it

Shad is pissed.

I don't know how that's going to go over with the other owners. Brilliant strategy if it works.
I dunno the details but if you pay half a Bil for something you expect some payoff

@ryanohalloran: 2. Khan said it is likely Wembley will begin hosting NFL games that don't involve the #Jaguars.

Well duh

@WJXTChris: As you would expect, with the new jerseys now available, they are a hot seller at the draft party. Teal seems to be the top color fans want.

@ColePepper: Earlier in the conference call with Mark Lamping, the Jaguars president noted that Jaguars fans had been threatened with a move before Shad bought the team. Certianly a thinly veiled reference to what happened under Wayne Weaver's ownership. I think they're sick of the topic.

ETA - As are we

Flip side

@ryanohalloran: League source on Bryan: "Never thought he'd be there for Jax. Got a good player." #Jaguars

@WJXTBJackson: Caldwell: We want to dress 8 guys in the D-Line and have them play equal snaps. That’s the goal. Bryan could see 25-30 snaps a game. @Sports4Jax @wjxt4 #Jaguars #NFDraft2018

@AlfieBCC: Bryan
Campbell
Ngakoue
Jones
Jackson
Dareus
Smoot
Fowler
Ankou
Bennett

Hell of a cut/trade coming

There's one thing for sure. Jags are taking BPA. Harrison is awesome value. Charks is even more speed.

Not sure how much these guys get on the field this year but these picks build depth and make cap questions in 2019 easier to solve.

Moncrief is on a one year deal. Church isn't getting any younger.

Tom Coughlin is one of the more under-rated figures in the NFL...he originally built this team to contender status real quickly as an expansion franchise, won 2 Super Bowls with New York and he is now building something potentially special in Jacksonville (he did a fantastic job at BC back in the day as well)...just stock-piling high-end talent...if they can get Bortles to the next level (by no means a definite) and keep Fournette healthy this team is going to be real difficult to knock off in the AFC...

I absolutely love what they did in this draft even though none of these guys look like they are going to start this year. BPA was adhered to. An eye was kept on the future. Just love it.

After decades of putrid, horrible football with a depleted roster, they finally have something that they haven't had for since Tom Coughlin was on the sidelines- depth. They have depth.
You are much higher on the class than myself, but I think they had one of the best drafts..... after the draft. Both Meeks and Lazard should have been drafted imo. Meeks will make the team while Lazard will have an uphill battle in front of him. Times are definitely changing in CAR because I was sure CAR would draft Lazard late. He has Cam-WR written all over him.

Corey Grant Increased Role?

By Phillip Heilman

Posted May 30, 2018 at 12:23 PM

Jaguars offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett sounds pleased with the weapons he’ll have to work with this season, but there is one player in particular he wants to get involved more often.

That is fourth-year running back Corey Grant, whose speed, elusiveness and pass-catching ability could allow Hackett to be more creative as he builds his offensive game plan.

“He’s just a guy we’ve got to get out there,” Hackett said after the Jaguars’ fourth organized team activities practice Tuesday. “There’s all these guys we’re talking about, and it’s a long ways away from that first game to see what we’re going to get, but I love to put him out there.”

Evidence of how the Jaguars feel about Grant was the one-year contract they tendered him in March. The second-round level they placed on him means Grant will make $2.914 million this season. According to contract analysis website spotrac, Grant’s salary cap hit in 2018 is expected to be 21st among all running backs.

That will be money well spent if Hackett can continue to design plays to take advantage of Grant’s skills like he did during the AFC title game against New England. Grant caught three passes for 59 yards in the 24-20 loss, sparking a pair of first-half touchdown drives with long receptions.

Especially interesting is how the Jaguars used Grant on those plays, twice having him on the field alongside running back Leonard Fournette.

His first reception came on a first-and-10 play from the Jacksonville 24-yard line. Grant was lined up similar to a slot receiver on the left side of the formation while Fournette was to the left of quarterback Blake Bortles in the shotgun.

At the snap, Bortles faked a hand-off to the right and threw to Grant with two blockers in front of him. Grant made a linebacker miss and picked up 20 yards.

Five plays later, Grant was alone in the backfield and the Jaguars faked a hand-off to the right. That time, Grant slipped into the flat and was left uncovered. He gained 24 yards, and the Jaguars scored on the next play.

On the following drive, the Jaguars ran the first play again, faking a hand-off to Fournette and swinging a pass to Grant, who had tight end Marcedes Lewis and receiver Marqise Lee in front of him. The gain was 15 yards, and the drive resulted in a rushing touchdown by Fournette.

“He’s a major change-of-pace back,” Hackett said of Grant. “He’s a guy that can catch the ball from the backfield. And even [when] we’ve given him the ball in the backfield, he’s done really good things. It’s good because you’ve got him and you’ve got T.J. [Yeldon] right there with Leonard. It’s a really good group.”

Fournette will continue to be the focal point of the offense, but it will be interesting to see how much more the Jaguars can squeeze out of Grant while continuing to maintain his effectiveness.

Last season, Grant carried 30 times for 248 yards (8.3-yard average) and caught three passes for 41 yards during the regular season. Those numbers were skewed, however, because of successful fake punts against Baltimore (58-yard run) and the Los Angeles Chargers (56-yard touchdown run).

The Jaguars released running back Chris Ivory in February, which could provide Grant with a few additional carries. But having him on the field with Fournette is an intriguing wrinkle the Jaguars should try to build on. Those plays afford easy throws for Bortles, take some of the burden off Fournette and have the potential to quickly become big gains.

Grant said his early impression from the coaching staff is that he will have an expanded role on offense. Set to be an unrestricted free agent after this season, a bigger opportunity could equal a bigger payday in the future.

“You always want to take advantage of mismatches, and the perfect example of it was the Patriots game,” Grant said. “I think my reps will increase. That happens if I come out here and make plays and let the coaches become confident in what I do and with [me] being confident in what I do. It works both ways. I’m just working every day trying to get better.”

As somebody who spent 1.5 hours doing yardwork on a wooded lot with shade and needed a long shower and a nap afterward, i can vouch for the heat.

@APMarkLong: Brutally hot practice for Jaguars, who went 2.5 hours in full pads, had 60 plays of 1s vs 1s and ran gassers after
