***OFFICIAL*** Jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, iPod Thread (1 Viewer)

I read above that it was legal and reversible.
Yes
But I've been told that your Apple warranty is immediately voided when you jailbreak. Is this true?
If they knew it was jaibroken, I think that is true.
And if you reverse the jailbreak does Apple know?
From what I have read there is no way for Apple to know what has been done to he phone as long as it restored to factory settings. Jailbreaking does not fundamentally change your phone. Once it is restored, it is restored.
What is the main reason to jailbreak?
I would think the main reason is to be bale to do stuff with the phone that Apple approved apps don't. I jailbroke my phone and I only use a few apps that I find useful. But I really, really like them. Something as simple as SBS Settings (allows for a quick swipe to get to certain settings) is an amazing lacking feature in the factory iphone. My phone can act as a wi-fi hotspot now and/or be tethered. Another simple thing that I wanted.
Is it truly worth it or just a "fun" thing to do because you get to change certain options.
For many people it may not be worth it. For me, it is a little bit worth it, which is enough for me to do it. And it is a fun thing to do.
:hifive: Awesome reply moops, thanks for breaking it down by question.One/two more for ya... Once jailbroken, do you lose functionality with iTunes and can it still be synched/backed up on my laptop?
Jailbroken apps/features work along side native Apple apps. No issues whatsoever except getting your jailbroken apps/settings back after an OS/Jailbreak upgrade. ITunes will copy all info over, but you need to recover the jailbroken apps/settings. I use Aptbackup to do this (see one if my early posts here). HTH

Been using the GreenPois0n jailbreak for several weeks and it is great. Best part it untethered my iphone. Plenty of youtube videos on how to use this simple app.
This all good for iPhone4? I wonder if I should be jailbreaking here.
Yes, I did it for my wife's Iphone 4. As of now you cannot be past ios 4.2.1. It is really easy, and a ton of youtube videos to walk you through it.

I believe there is a tethered jailbreak of 4.3 available. I can't see any reason to go from 421 to 43 at this point though.

I have seen the beta jailbreaks, but nothing solid for Windows yet. Sn0wbreeze is the new flavor du jour right?

I'll be jailbreaking once they come up with an untethered break for 4.3.1 (I just updated my software). I'm getting a Wifi only iPad and will be jailbreaking with the intention of getting the MyWi app. I've still got the AT&T unlimited data plan, so being able to use the phone as a hotspot will be valuable.

Thanks for the info in this thread.

Just FYI there are some better wifi tether apps out there that you might be interested in now. MyWi is actually the most stable usb tether that I know of.

I am loving MyWi - will not upgrade to new OPS and even risk losing it unless it is really worth it. Who the heck would pay so much per month when you can have it forever for one monthly payment!

I have the original Iphone and just got a white Iphone4. I use Tmobile. While you can jailbreak the I4 is it possible to unlock it yet in order to use Tmobile on it?

I just did the jailbreak last night and it was very easy. Installed MyWi and it works great. I used Redsn0w and it took me about 20 minutes from start to finish. I followed the instructions from this Link.

Glad to see a stable 4.3 jailbreak out there. I will probably jailbreak my 4 this week and report back.

You used to be able to do it. Not sure about now. Sorry.ETA: looks like it is out there for 4.2.1. :bye:

1. Will I lose any data currently on the phone? Is there anything I need to do to protect it?2. Now, to reverse a jailbreak all it says I need to do is restore default settings, but I'll lose everything then, right?

3. I am not on my home computer, but at work. Will this work if I don't have iTunes on this PC?

1. Will I lose any data currently on the phone? Is there anything I need to do to protect it?No, but I would backup/sync your iPhone on itunes before starting.2. Now, to reverse a jailbreak all it says I need to do is restore default settings, but I'll lose everything then, right? You don't have to restore to reverse the jailbreak. If you upgrade to a new OS, then it will rreverse the jailbreak. I think that's why, in part, Apple keeps coming out with a new update seemingly every few weeks. I just read that OS 4.3.2 will be out soon, so if you jailbreak 4.3.1, then you shouldn't update to 4.3.2. If you read what each new update does (fixes some bug, adds some protection, etc.), they rarely do anything earth shattering with each update. I read the 4.3.2 update will only fix some bugs related to the Verizon iPhone (which may or may not effect you).Even if you have to restore your iPhone, so long as you've recently backed up your phone on itunes, you will be able to put all the information, apps, settings, etc. back on your phone.3. I am not on my home computer, but at work. Will this work if I don't have iTunes on this PC?I don't know, but I'd guess that it would work because I didn't have to use itunes at all when I was jailbreaking the phone. I did mine on the computer that has itunes.

Thanks. Just bought MyWi, so I'll probably stick with that unless any of these other apps you mention are cheap. Can you please tell me the name(s) of the better wifi tether apps?

Thanks for the help so far. Now, my phone already had 4.3.1, so I downloaded the redsnow file. But, when I click 'browse' to locate my ios file, I cant access my phone. How do I do this?

Go to the link I put in my post. On it, there is a link to download the ios4.3.1 file. When yyou download that file, save it to your Desktop (or some other easy to find place). Then when you "browse" from redsnOw, you can easily locate it. You don't use the ios4.3.1 file that is already downloaded to onto your iphone.

Finished a little while ago. There is a LOT of stuff here. I'm just afraid of doing too much and screwing something up...

I have the original Iphone and just got a white Iphone4. I use Tmobile. While you can jailbreak the I4 is it possible to unlock it yet in order to use Tmobile on it?
You used to be able to do it. Not sure about now. Sorry.ETA: looks like it is out there for 4.2.1. :bye:
Unlocked?Mine is already jailbroke
Yes. Unlocked. If you're past 4.2.1 for the OS, you're going to have to downgrade or wait until a 4.3 unlock is out.

This isn't accurate. You cannot downgrade the baseband. The OS has nothing to do with whether you can unlock or not. It all has to do with the baseband version.

Also there is some chatter about AT&T sending texts to people that tether heavy on their system.
Read this on another site. Was thinking of trying the MyWiFi app from Cydia, but don't want to piss off AT&T. Does anyone have a better app than MyWifi for jailbroke iphones?

Just jailbroke 4.3.3. I recommend Redsn0w for a straight up jailbreak and Sn0wbreeze for more customized functionality. Redsn0w was easier and faster to do.

By chance does anyone know if there are any multitask disablers that work on iOS 4.3.3? I have been using ZToggle and it does not work on 4.3.3. :kicksrock:

Just jailbroke my iPhone...what themes are the most popular?
Can you be a little more specific?
Hmm, not even sure how... I DLed Winterboard and have used a couple of the themes from the basic list on Cydia. I have tried to find a list of the most popular, but I don't see some of the ones listed. Where can I find other themes and what are the ones you've found that you like?

If you go into the individual folder with full themes there are plenty to choose from. There are themes for keyboards, safari, dialer, calculator, weather, etc...you can also add other data sources than the standard Cydia comes with by default. I use iboxCarbon as my default theme, but there are tons of others out there. HTH

Am new with my iPhone 4, just got it this month on Verizon. Got it when I dropped my previous phone into a bucket of water when I tried to answer it while I was cleaning my golf clubs. My wife is unsure whether it was an accident. I have a nephew to back me up.

Unfortunately I did the upgrade to 4.2.9, and am unable to do the simple untethered jailbreak. I am not sure I did the tethered jailbreak correctly, as I had my iPhone in a DFU cycle and had to reset it and start over NBD, since I was smart (at lest for me ;) )followed the directions and had backed it up before starting this process.

This all leads me to 2 questions...

1) Does anyone know if and when they are going to update the untethered apps to allow the 4.2.9 (I understand that the release of that update was largely to close a jailbreak hole) updates to work with them?

and if that is not going to happen any time soon...

2) Is there a way to downgrade to 4.2.8 or earlier so that I can fit in and play with everyone else?

My main reason for jailbreak is to tether my iPad thru the iPhone. If I read my Verizon stuff correctly, I have unlimited data, so some extra from the iPad won't be that big of a deal.

TIA,

4.2.9 from what I understand only has a tethered jailbreak option at this point. You could try to downgrade to 4.2.8 but I'm not sure how easy that is. I've never messed with either.

Every time that I have tried to downgrade to 4.2.8, I have ended up with the 3194 error. I did have to go and reset my hosts file from the TinyUmbrella additions, so that I could do the reset to break the DFU cycle.I'm kinda new at this, and when people ask how much I know, I say I know enough to get myself in a bunch of trouble. ;) Point me towards any good directions on how to do the downgrade would be greatly appreciated!!!

FYI:

If any of you use ZToggle to turn on and off multitasking, then it has finally been updated and now works perfectly on iOS 4+. I am very happy to have this feature back.

Break this one down for me. I have that app which makes it so the mt bar is just the open apps. What's the benefit here?

My preference is to not have multitasking for apps on at all. This accomplishes that function.

Did the same. What are some must haves from cydia? First time jailbreaking.
Themes galore! You might consider Installous as well. SBSettings too.I would recommend browsing through some of the Cydia sections.
UnlimTones is pretty sweet too. Every ringtone in the universe for free and no hoops to jump through to actually use them.
Been using the web version of Audiko for years now. Will try the app version.

Id give my left nut to be able to stream my iPad's HBO GO app to the Apple TV and watch on the big screen.

it's coming along. the tethered one is stable.

What is interesting is the ethical battle going on about enabling siri for 4 and 3GS.

Is it available for jailbroken 4OS?
I haven't heard that. Most of the work is on the 5. This is going to be some seriously strange stuff. Hacking Siri means you are hacking Apple's main servers. This is grounds for pound me in the ### type prison $100k fine for each time you ask where the nearest titty bar is. What is interesting is they are only releasing this on 4S. They signed the software in such a way that you have to spoof Apple to think you have a 4S. So here you have apple saying you must have all this uber processing power to run Siri, so buy it. But it's a load of ####, but now since they brought the backbone of the whole system in house you aren't just tweaking the UI you are "stealing"This is going to be a huge issue shortly. Maybe one of the larger issues to hit the dev community since Apple lost the SC battle.

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 out as of 12/27. However, not yet available for 4S or iPad 2. :kicksrock:

So this works for iphone 4?Also, how does this work since I have not jailbroken since 4.1 (which I am still running). Do I have to upgrade my phone to iOS 5 AND then jailbreak or do I just DL the jailbreak?

Yup. Works for 4. Check out jailbreaknation.com for info. Back up, apply newer iOS (check which one you can move up to), and then jailbreak.
