***Official Jays Thread*** They spent $234 Million on this? (1 Viewer)

Edwin's back is really messing things up for the Jays. The two guys "competing" for 1B are both hitting under .100 in spring (Smoak and Barton), meanwhile, the DH types (Navarro, Viciedo) are hitting but can't play 1st. Ideally, Edwin plays first and those two share DH, but Edwin's back means he can't play first and a turd like Smoak will. After a slow start, Devon Travis is ripping the ball (good contact, 9 for last 18), but I think they're going to give Maicer Izturis 2B - in either case, 1B is now a bigger issue than either 2B or CF (Pompey/Pillar both showing well).

Opening day ideally, IMO

SS - Reyes

3B - Donaldson

RF - Bautista

1B - Edwin

C - Martin
DH - Navarro

LF - Saunders

2B - Travis

CF - Pompey

BN - Viciedo (DH platoon/when Navarro catches)

BN - Izturis (backup MI)

BN - Valencia (backup CI)

BN - Pillar (4th OF)

It will end up actually being something like:

SS - Reyes

3B - Donaldson

RF - Bautista

DH - Edwin

C - Martin
LF - Saunders

1B - Smoak (not as good at plate as Viciedo/Navarro)

2B - Izturis (not as good at plate as Devon Travis)

CF - Pompey

BN - Navarro (getting less AB's at DH though, weaker bat in lineup in his place)

BN - Goins (can't hit, but can play SS, as well as 2B, Travis can't)

BN - Valencia (he's a lock and actually likely gets a lot of 1B time in this scenario)

BN - Pillar

As stinky as this sounds, would Ryan Howard not make a bit of sense here now? The Phillies just want him gone and I read that they are willing to eat $50M of the $60 owed to him over the next two seasons. So you are getting a power LHB who can play 1B for $10M over two years. Not a huge investment and I don't imagine the Phillies would ask for much in return.

He had a terrible average last year but he still hit 23 bombs and drove in 95 R's on a below average offence.

I would think he would be a bit of an upgrade over Smoak.

Is it decided that Martin can catch Dickey? I haven't heard.

Because if he can't you have to make room for that bum Thole.

 
It does seem like Thole may make it. In which case Viciedo won't. Gibbons and AA both indicated this AM that Travis may indeed win the 2B job.

Gibbons said this AM he prefers EE 1B and Navarro DH, so my "ideal" lineup may come to fruition, with Thole on the bench rather than DV.

So, with Delabar's demotion, it seems likely 20 year olds Miguel Castro and Roberto Osuna both make the team this year in the pen. They'll join the 24 & under starting pitchers Hutchison, Norris and Sanchez... and rookies Devon Travis and Dalton Pompey, and to start the year Kevin Pillar in the starting lineup.

And then there are the additions of Josh Donaldson, Russell Martin and Michael Saunders. Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Reyes are all still Blue Jays. All of which is to say, I have no idea how much better this team is than last year's version... but it seems like it will be a hell of a lot more fun to watch.

24 of 25 spots on opening day roster announced. No surprises.

Pompey everyday in CF, Travis everyday at 2B, Smoak makes the team, Hutchison opening day starter, Thole to AAA. Bench includes Tolleson, Navarro, Valencia. Viciedo cut. Going will be on team if they go 7 relievers, not if they go 8.

Bullpen right now has Cecil, Castro, Osuna, Estrada, Loup and Colt Hynes. Hendriks and Redmond on bubble for 7th,could keep both and send down Coins.

Felix Doubront signed to minor league deal. He'll start in AAA with Johan Santana, Jeff Francis and all the other starters I really don't want to ever see.

On the plus side, his career peripherals are pretty much identical to J.A. Happ, so maybe he's a bit better than the other two... if he can regain his control... and his velocity

 
Bottom of this lineup (Travis, Pompey, Pillar, Smoak, Navarro etc...) going to be a lot better than the Rasmus/Gose/Izturis/Kawasaki dog#### we've seen the past couple years.

 
It's going to be awesome in September when Norris and Sanchez start to tire and Hoffman and Stroman jump in their spots for the playoff run.

 
21 year old Dan Norris gets his first win, 20 year old Miguel Castro his first save, with an assist to 20 year old Roberto Osuna who probably gets a hold, I have no idea how they work.

 
Going to be interesting when Saunders comes back. Do they just rotate through DH with Smoak, Saunders, Bautista, Edwin and Navarro?

Gibbons talking after the game about maybe asking the young guys to do too much and wanting to get clearly defined roles. If I had to guess, they go back to Cecil. He would have got the chance tonight had it got to that point.

 
So the first month is in the books (other than tonights game). 10-12 is by no means great but at least they are still in the race.

Offence looks great, as expected. Imagine what it's going to look like when Encarnacion gets rolling...

But the pitching is terrible. Brutal. Is there a worse combined staff (starters + bullpen) in the majors? Every night it seems like they give up a 4 spot in either the first or second inning. And the odd night when the starters hold the opposition to 3 or less runs, the pen blows it.

I really don't see any solution. You have to ride Dickey and Buehrle out the rest of the year and then say goodbye. And you have to let the kids chuck to gain experience and see what you've got in them.

It's probably time to put Estrada in the rotation and make Sanchez the closer. If that's where Sanchez is best suited, that's where he should pitch.

 
I hope they give Sanchez some more time. His stuff is so ridiculous if he could just command it. I'm not sure that putting him in the pen is going to change anything.

Sitting pretty good all things considered. Once Edwin/Bautista get their #### together, even average pitching should get them the division.

 
Ugh... Estrada taking his spot in the rotation.

He's had the "dead arm" thing since his first start, I guess they want him to work it out in AAA, rather than the bigs.

Yeah, I'd give Sanchez lots of time to work things out. I think the biggest problem with the bullpen is they have to pitch 5 innings a game. Which lends to nonsense like Andrew Albers and Jeff Francis on the same major league roster because they're "long guys".

Didn't catch that part. I thought they were just making room for the week cause the pen was worn out. Wonder why they didn't call up Wolf then; is he out of options?

 
This Donaldson guy is pretty solid.

Despite how terrible they have looked, this may be the best I've felt about this team in years. If the lineup ever gets fully healthy, they'll be an absolute juggernaut on offense.

 
This hillbilly they have instead of Zaun is terrible. Not that Zaun isn't terrible mind you. But at least his over the top shtick was mildly entertaining in a train wreck sort of way.

Supposedly Hamels would not waive his no-trade for a possible deal with the Jays, which is ashame, because this offense is incredible.

I think he's the 1392nd player that wouldn't waive a no-trade to Toronto.
