They aren't going to give him the entire playbook. BB will give him a packet of 10-15 plays to start. He probably had the plays before he was on the airplane.
I honestly would not be surprised if he was on the field this week. He has to be excited for a fresh start. And a fresh start with Tom Brady as your QB after what he has had? He just won the lottery.
I would guess they give him literally about a handful of plays. Probably a trips to the outside screen, a slant, a sideline route, a go route, a hook, and a curl. That's it for now. His biggest asset will be having him run deeper routes and demand double coverage with not a lot of targets or intent to throw the ball to him just yet.
I am pretty sure they will then combine those routes into one of those other plays . . . so say he runs a sideline route over and over. Then he'll fake the sideline route into a curl. Defenders will figure he is running the same couple of routes at the same depth and then they will have him go deep or make a double move. Whenever he gets on the field, I would guess he will get a couple short passes and one or two deep attempts to keep the opposition honest. Maybe they hit on one of the deep balls.
That way it will help clear out the middle of the field some and give the RBs more room to maneuver (both running or receiving).
That being said, the Pats playbook is insanely complex. They have over 1,000 plays, but I have head BB mention that for receivers their are probably 4-5 hot reads to break off routes per play . . . so he guessed there really could be closer to 5,000 play options that receivers would have to know based on formations, defensive alignments, audibles, etc.
There is no way Gordon (or anyone else for that matter) could absorb that much very quickly. IMO, it will take weeks for him to be a regular, consistent contributor. What makes NE so efficient and proficient is they get out of the original play call and have everyone in alignment on what to do once the ball is snapped. That's hard to do if one of the receivers doesn't know where to line up, when to motion, when to go back from where he came from, what the beat of the play is when the receivers break off the line, where to go if a defensive back releases coverage at 10 yards, at 20 yards, etc.
I am sure the Pats hope to get him much more up to speed for the latter part of the season and into the playoffs. But I doubt he sees a ton of meaningful snaps or targets for quite awhile.
Fantasy wise, most people will play him if they own him, but if you have clear cut better options I would go with those for awhile. I guess it depends who else is on your roster.
