*****Official Kamala Harris Thread***** (3 Viewers)

More seriously I’m beginning to think this may not be much of a race- Kamala may run away with it.
It's early in the game.  But I agree that she looks like a strong candidate.  Still questions on whether Biden will run. He'd be a top contender.  And the Beto wild card.  He's very charismatic and would be a huge breath of fresh air for a lot of voters.   I'm just praying that Bernie doesn't run and divide the party again.

What's the deal about her being a homewrecker?  Saw a few memes posted by my Trump obsessed Facebook friends yesterday.  Something about an affair with a married man years ago?  Is this a thing?

Full disclosure, these same Facebook friends post pictures of Obama shaking Bin Laden's hand and other photoshopped, made-up nonsense.
In the '90s, when she was single and Willie Brown was apparently in an open relationship with his wife, the two of them dated. He was a very powerful politician and has admitted that he took steps to help her career.

I like Harris and this is hardly disqualifying, but I must confess I do find it a little ... off-putting.

I know it's been said time and time again, but she really is a cop through and through.  Prosecuting a homeless mother of 3 working two jobs for her kids' truancy?

Watch this video. The utter joy Kamala Harris takes in using power against the powerless is something to behold.
Every time a "gotcha" video clip is posted to social media that starts in the middle of a dialogue or speech (as this one obviously does), and the person doesn't even bother to offer a link to the full video (as this one fails to do), it's an obvious red flag that the person is more interested in partisan/personal politics than substantive discussion.  Same thing goes for stuff about votes on litigation that remove the context and don't allow the legislator to explain their position. This particular clip is being circulated not because the underlying policy is so horrific, but because Harris chuckles at an inopportune time which makes her look heartless and cruel. If she'd said this with a somber tone it would be a nothing clip.

All groups use this tactic, but it's most prominently used by two groups: right wingers and Bernie Bros. And this IMO is why Bernie Bros get such a bad reputation. The same thing could be done to take down any politician who has been in the spotlight for any length of time- for example Bernie Sanders, who once argued that cervical cancer is caused by women not putting out enough and once voted to provide gun manufacturers with special immunity from civil liability, to name just two things off the top of my head that could be unfairly blown up by the opposition and held against him.

I am far more interested in what Harris, Sanders, or any other candidate who has taken a questionable policy position in the past (spoiler alert- it's all of them) plans to do as president than I am in what they said or did a decade ago. That's not to say past positions shouldn't be considered and addressed, of course they should be both for their own sake and to evaluate the candidate's viability in the general election.  But this silly online "purity test" effort where everyone ends up "cancelled" except for Bernie is dumb self-destructive nonsense and it really needs to stop. The natural endpoint is a candidate who stands for nothing and everything so they can't be pigeonholed ... sound familiar?

She's more than qualified. And because of that, the GOP trashing campaign starts now. Fox and Donald have 22 months of fervent belittling ahead of them. The base will love every nasty minute of it.

Ren, Ren, Ren.  Pace yourself buddy. There are reports that there may be between 20-25 Democratic candidates announcing a 2020 presidential run.  If you start off saying that every single one of them is the devil's offspring and a detriment to society, people are eventually going to think you're a right-wing hack. And we don't want that.

I like her. I think jumping on the socialism train with all the current cool kids is a mistake. Swinging too far left is just about the only way Dems can eff this up. But as usual they can't get out of their own way. Hopefully she makes the necessary adjustments. Either way I think she'll be a strong factor in this race.

I didn’t see a thread and I think she deserves her own. Watching the Iowa town hall tonight and I’m very very impressed. On the issues she is a little too liberal for me. She is for:

Medicare for All

Green New Deal (this is somewhat undefined- I’m not clear if she is for AOC’s specific ideas or if she has her own.)

I’m not there yet on these issues- I’m a little more centrist. But her demeanor and personality are outstanding and she seems genuine, competent, smart, and good willed. And this to me is much more important than the specific issues. Dare I say she reminds me of Obama?
Yep, that is a terrible thing.  She even let's bankers skate put willing to threaten parents.  Great person.

She is fake on her progessive issues, at least IMO she jumped on the bandwagon and won't fight for them.

I’m running to be president of the people, by the people, and for all people. I’m running to fight for an America where you only have to work one job to pay the bills and where health care and education are fundamental rights.

I support a Green New Deal. Climate change is an existential threat to all of us, and we have got to deal with the reality of it.

Let’s speak an uncomfortable but honest truth with one another: racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and transphobia are real in this country. They are age-old forms of hate with new fuel. And we need to speak that truth so we can deal with it.

I just watched the video and it really doesn't seem objectionable to me, although the only thing she describes is sending a letter.  Did she actually go ahead and prosecute parents?  Do we know how that played out?
Really?  I think it's a pretty gross misuse of law enforcement.  With our incarceration system where it is, I don't think we need a cop's cop who saw fit to prosecute homeless moms and let Steve Mnuchin skate.

Did she actually throw anyone in jail or take specific actions against any parents?  I couldn't find anything with a quick google search.

I agree with you about Mnuchin and other bankers.

ETA:  "While district attorney of San Francisco, Harris sharply reduced truancy rates by prosecuting parents and sending letters to every family in the school district warning them of the consequences of truancy."  This is the best info I have so far.  https://www.sfgate.com/education/article/Kamala-Harris-California-s-truancy-crisis-must-5304576.php

She threatened to prosecute parents to put them in a cage if they didn't get their kids to school.  That's who she is.

My son was truant for a very long time in high school because he developed agoraphobia. I tried to get help through his school, went to meetings, etc etc, they still threatened me with jail, although the principal told me that by the time it was adjudicated my son would be 18

The school had no discretion to help me. The counselling help was not enough with his situation. I went into the school in literal tears when I got the threatening note even though I had been trying to help my son. The school officials felt bad because they knew I was trying

I won't be voting for her.

Maybe he's already done this, but Bernie should have his campaign explicitly eschew the online Bernie Bros that use tactics similar to the IRA. (Not the Irish Republican Army. The other one.)

You have a son in HS?

Thanks for telling us early on.  This would have been a huge mystery for everyone. otherwise.

This is what Democratic party discussion is now.  "But Trump".  How about we talk about the candidates in a way that takes more than two brain cells.
Why? I don't find you to be an honest broker and don't agree with your methods of selectively pointing out problems with some politicians and vigorously supporting or willfully ignoring others who are more abhorrent. Maybe if you'd be more consistent in your disdain, your criticism might have more credence.

Just to put your criticism of her in context, you oppose compulsory education right?
Yes.  I agree with John Taylor Gatto (RIP) on the school system.  But that really has nothing to do with threatening poor black people with nightmarish legal proceedings to solve a social problem.

Just so you understand, Harris' job wasn't to express what her beliefs were about compulsory education, it was to uphold those laws.  Did she go after parents that weren't breaking the law?  Do you suppose that the school and law enforcement probably warned these parents many times?

She should threaten them with the death penalty without due process for crimes they didn't commit instead.  Then you'd put her in your avatar!

We she should be for free education then.  We will see.

Wow.

Monday night’s CNN Town Hall with @KamalaHarris was the most watched cable news single candidate election town hall ever.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.   :potkettle:

Yeah, and apparently was given kush appointments that paid well and a BMW to boot. Very off-putting indeed.

Noonan says that we can't afford a health care system that is 33% cheaper than our current one. It looks like he may not be very persuasive.
We can't afford a system that literally every other rich nation in the world is able to provide. What happened to American exceptionalism.

I spend like 450K on health care for 28 employees and thier families. i can't afford the status quo. Health care costs are literally killing Americans.

Regarding her approval of Medicare for All:

http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/health_and_science/poll-support-for-medicare-for-all/article_72770774-c091-5a22-96a2-7e07141e2119.html

Latest polling shows 56% of Americans now support this.
But if you look at other polls that number drops if "your taxes will be raised" is one of the variables and worse yet "the wait time for services will be drastically increased" is added--the support goes waaaayyy down.

I will try and dig that poll up--it was on CNN this weekend.

It's just like roads and schools. People want better roads and schools they just don't want to pay for them.
