GDogg had some insight on this kid back in the old thread. Jeremy Tyler and his entourage have a lot of baggage, and IIRC, Tyler was unlikely to qualify academically. I hope we see more guys like Tyler and Brandon Jennings passing on NCAA ball instead of pretending to be a college student for a semester or so. I suppose the college game will suffer for losing a few top players to Euro leagues, but I'd like to see the one-and-done rule go away. I'd like to see a system similar to what college hockey and the NHL use, where a player can get drafted out of high school but can still play up to four years in the NCAA if they want. Let the pro team retain or trade the player's rights for four years, too.shut it down said:

Redding will be allowed to practice with the team in the fall, but can't suit up for games until after fall semester finals. If he stays clean, he will be back for the Big East schedule and the postseason.

So a big-time class of 2010 center prospect has come from nowhere. Well, Canada.
His name is Maurice Walker. He's a Canadian transferring to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, a rising hoops factory where Craig Brackins, Jeff Adrien, and Thomas Robinson (4-star freshman at KU) played high school ball.
Walker is 6'10", somewhere between 270 and 290, with a back-to-the-basket offensive game. Rivals doesn't even have him rated, but suddenly the guy has offers from Georgetown, Pitt, and Marquette, with Kansas, UConn, Duke, and Kentucky all showing interest.

I thought I was in a league with shut it down? But if he were here, in a different form say, I'd say I was good with this. Also, Trevor Mbakwe, a JuCo who originally signed with Marquette then played at Miami-Dade and is now a Gopher commit for next year looks good for his upcoming assault trial. According to the lying liar girl, Mbakwe punched her in the face at 2:45 am some morning and then tried to pull down her pants before fleeing on a bike. Seriously.Too bad for that chick though, he had a thrown a party that evening, and the entire men's and women's basketball teams at Miami-Dade can all vouch for his being there at the time of the assault. So looks like he'll be a Gopher this season.He's 6-8 240 and built like a monster. The Gopher big men are pretty much all the softer type, so his bruiser and female beating ways will be a nice addition.

This is excellent news for "U" fans. The Gophers haven't had a widebody PF willing to choke a ##### since Courtney James. Say what you will about Courtney James's career, but he was a core player on the last Gophers Final Four team.

Scout's top 100 has Barnes, Knight, Thompson (Rivals #17), Sullinger, and Melo (Rivals #16) in order at the top. Selby is #10, and Harris is #29. I'm curious if those rankings will converge as the year progresses. I hadn't realized what a great recruiting class Ohio State already signed. A top 5, a top 20, and a top 40ish that all play different positions. Not bad.

My thoughts on this:Memphis and Cal didn't know Derek Rose cheated on his ACT/SAT.The NCAA didn't know Derek Rose cheated on his ACT/SAT.Both deemed that Derek Rose was eligible to play college basketball and be given an academic scholarship.It comes out Derek Rose cheated on his ACT/SAT.Memphis does an internal investigation, and finds no fault with Cal or the basketball program. They didn't tell or know that Derek Rose cheated.The NCAA looks into Memphis and finds that Memphis and Cal didn't know that Rose cheated.So Memphis knowingly did nothing wrong, and they did so with NCAA approval. How is Memphis in any way culpable for the actions of someone that deceived them?It doesn't make any rational sense to me. "Oh ####! You got swindled by some kid that lied to you! That sucks, now here's your fine."If anything there should be some way where Derek Rose is required to repay Memphis a year's out of state tution. I hadn't heard of all of this.But still, all of this happened with NCAA approval. If the NCAA were worth their salt they would start being more proactive about this stuff instead of reactive. I still feel like its a joke.I thought Cal was a weasel before he came to UK. Now I still think he is a weasel, but almost respect him because of it now. From press conferences I've heard with Cal, he doesn't beat around the bush. The kids he recruits, he knows they're coming to college to play basketball, and to pursue basketball as a career path, not other academics and he almost says as much. I have a respect for Calipari in the same way that I appreciated Jerry Tarkanian. Tark would never say, "It's our job to educate these players". He would say, "It's my job to keep my players eligible to play so we can win basketball games." I respect how Calipari treats college basketball like the business it is. Team GPA will never be a factor in Calipari's salary or job status. Two years from now, if the UK team GPA is 4.0 but the team goes to the NIT, he might lose his job. If the team GPA is 2.2 and the team goes to the Final Four, he might get his contract extended. I would prefer an environment where college revenue sport players are paid for playing their sport. It's an entry-to-low level job in their chosen field, and certainly generates a lot of money for the school. IMO, coaches like Calipari get the sport closer to pay-for-play status. So I like that. And, Calipari is a very entertaining guy to follow - he's talented, his teams are talented, and he's a lightning rod of interest.Kendall said:

This is outstanding news. Knight seems to be serious about KU, too - Self will have an in-home visit with Knight in September.Tyshawn Taylor must be considering the 2010 NBA Draft, as KU is still going after senior PGs.
UCLA might still be on Barnes's list, but I don't think that matters much - Barnes is going to Duke, KU, or UNC. Iowa State gets the hometown courtesy consideration, and I have NFI what OU is doing still in the running.

Yet another mid-Atlantic "prep school" is in trouble. Charis Prep in North Carolina is in danger of the dreaded "uncleared" status. 2009 Charis graduate Keith Dewitt (PF Mizzou commit) did not clear academically.
Mizzou has two other Charis alumni on their roster. This might be more of a down year for Mizzou than anticipated.

Since Coward was a 6'nothing" skinny PG, and Doug Smith was a 6'10" ripped PF, this might be an opportunity for an "all black people look the same" joke.

Kanter does sound very intriguing. I wonder how long he plans on sticking around? I have to think he's in it for at least 2 or 3 years. Otherwise, why not just sign a pro deal in Europe? I heard he had a deal for 2-3 million on the table.
Obviously, every big team is gonna take a look. With Josh Smith likely sticking out west, all the east coast powers are gonna take their best shot.

I was re-reading the Parrish article today, which is surprisingly well-written and cogent for a guy that's a complete knob sometimes. I've seen a lot of wrangling and distinction-drawing between Maggette and Rose elsewhere, but the standard, as stated in 2004 by Myles Brand, is this:
Like Parrish points out, the NCAA finding that there wasn't sufficient evidence to determine whether Maggette knew he was ineligible is crazy. Maggette testified that he took money from Piggie. http://www.nytimes.com/2000/07/12/sports/p...Athletic%20AssnIt's an admittedly crazy standard, because the school is staking their season on their players being honest about their eligibility, and the kids who did take money have every reason in the world to lie. If any of us were a 17 year-old 5-star recruit and the high-major basketball power that we've committed to asks us if we've taken money, and we have, what are we going to say? Maggette was long-gone once the #### (should have) hit the fan.
Point being that even though Duk got away with this for whatever reason, it doesn't seem like they did anything wrong re: Maggette, and the standard really should be whether the school knew or should've known, provided the student clears the NCAA Clearinghouse. Given the strong connections between WWW, Rose and Calipari, and given that the SAT test in question took place in Detroit, should Cal have smelled something fishy? One could make that argument.

not a big update, but Rivals is indicating that Kanter is likely gonna do 1 year at findlay, 1 year in college and then make the jump to the NBA. I dont really get how this makes sense, but whatever. If thats what he's gonna do, why not just take a 2 year deal with clearly defined and reasonable buy out terms and play pro ball in Europe until he's draft eligible?
If this kid's as good as they say, what's he gonna get out of HS basketball?
They also said his English is limited, but his dad's a college professor, so he should be fine academically once he gets comfortable.

Working off of his posting acumen, plus some of his descriptions of campus events, I assumed he was a K-State guy. Maybe he transferred to KU after he didn't have Michael Beasley around to tutor him.This morning, I saw a T-shirt that said, "Kansas: the birthplace of North Carolina basketball." I appreciate the sentiment (Frank McGuire's and Dean Smith's hoops roots trace back to Phog Allen), but to me it highlights that Roy Williams won zero titles at Kansas, but has two (and counting) at UNC.

Apparently elite 2012 wing prospect JP Tokoto was lights out at the elite camp this weekend and K extended an offer. Several people (One UNC poster and the guy that runs the insider board at rivals) seem to think that a commitment is just a formality and will becoming soon. (perhaps tonight)
6'5 180 and apparently a top 10 prospect in the soph class. This is very out of character for K, but i guess he loved what he saw. Hard to get excited about a kid that's 3 years away, but still figured i'd post it.

Good question. I'm just tossing around ideas, but the "prep schools" like Findlay aren't in the state high school leagues, so they play longer and more compressed schedules with more travel than regular HS teams, mixing in games against jucos and college JV teams when dates with other high schools aren't available. We can argue about the quality of basketball instruction, but there's a lot more on-court time in the US system than in Europe - more games, and a lot more practice time.

Findlay is even a step above normal prep schools. Technically, it isnt even a school. Its basically a privately funded basketball team that operates as an independent entity. They are not technically subject to any standards at all.

I prefer that kind of system to the open enrollment recruiting that is commonplace in public high schools. Heck, I'd like to see college basketball be reclassified as "junior basketball" and not have the teams be so closely affiliated with the colleges, so the schools can stop pretending that they care so much about the educations of the players.TLEF316 said:

Des Moines Register talks to Barnes
Harrison Barnes's quick thoughts on the six schools on his list:
— North Carolina: "I was a big Michael Jordan fan. After visiting there, the university really stands on its own."
— TSTSNBN: "They have a great education. They have a great business school that could set me up after basketball."
- Kansas: "It's close to home and there's a great tradition there. Coach Bill Self has great player-coach relations."
— Oklahoma: "They're one of the hottest stocks right now. They've been bringing in great recruits. They definitely have a lot of my interest."
— UCLA: "They've been in three Final Fours in the last four years. They know how to win."
— Iowa State: "They've been bringing in some big- time players."

I think UNC is more of a contender here than we thought.
TSTSNBN's great business school is actually their MBA program, and I doubt Barnes is waiting until grad school to play basketball. If Barnes can negotiate a guaranteed admittance to that MBA program as a stipulation on signing a LOI, more power to him.
Xavier Henry may end up being a big factor with KU and Barnes. If Henry has a monster year at SF and looks like a lottery pick, it helps KU's chances with Barnes a lot, as Barnes claims he won't decide on a college until after his HS basketball season.
I still have NFI why OU is being considered here.
UCLA is a great school with a great hoops tradition, but why play that style of ball if you're a one-and-done?
Remember when you broke up with a girl and said, "we'll still be friends", knowing full well you were never going to talk to her again? I'm not trying to draw a parallel to Barnes saying he was seriously considering Iowa State, just asking if you remember that.
