Gophers sign Nebraska Player of the Year Elliott Eliason, a 6-11 center who is rated at 3 stars by Rivals and Scout, and Scout's #27 center for the class of 2010.

Yeah, yeah, it's not super duper impressive, but adding a 7-footer who is a smart kid (Stanford was after him) and a good passer can't hurt. Plus, with Sampson and Iverson being just sophomores, he'll have two years to learn behind them before he has to worry about being an impact player. The Gophers still have two scholarships remaining for 2010 with guard Austin Hollins visiting this week and guard Frank Williams scheduled to come in soon as well.

If this ends up being the class, a trio of 3-star players, it will be a bit underwhelming after the last two Tubby has brought in, but still solid. They are still in the mix for Cory Joseph (Rivals #7), Trey Zeigler (#26), Trevor Releford (#98), and possibly Vander Blue (#22). Obviously I'm hoping for Joseph, but any of the four would help the backcourt which seems to be where Tubby is focusing now, as he should be.
Trevor Releford's older brother, Travis, is a bench SG/SF for Kansas that would be a starter on about half of the teams in the Big XII this season. I've seen the Relefords play high school ball, and Trevor is a more complete player than this brother at the same age. Travis will be able to score some points in the Big XII, but he's pretty much a shooter/penetrator. Trevor is a good enough passer to keep the ball moving in a motion offense, and could play limited PG minutes in the right system.
In Cory Joseph's case, I think he should follow his brother and play together with him in a show of brotherly solidarity. In Releford's case, I think he should branch out and do his own thing.
:lmao: GO-PHERS-GO!KU said "thanks, but no thanks" to Trevor a little too early in the process. They got an early commit from an SG (Royce Woolridge) that has plateaued as a player and is now falling down the rankings as guys like Trevor Releford improve.

I'd love to see the Barn rockin' again like it did during the days of Willie Burton and Melvin Newbern. If Cory Joseph and Trevor Releford are the two that make that happen, more power to Tubby and the "U".

ETA: Trevor Releford committed to Alabama late last night. Official announcement coming soon.

Knight to UK rumors are back with BK taking a visit: http://www.allkyhoops.com/2009/09/oh-what-...in-on-2010.html

This would put TSTSNBN way, way ahead for Irving, as he probably doesn't want to share a backcourt with Knight and Bledsoe, but not out of the question given what Cal pulled this year.
There might be others still on Knight's list, but it's really a three-horse race between Kentucky, UConn, and Kansas. KU hasn't given up on Knight, but they are still talking to other PGs. KU gave up on Irving a while back. I think we can pencil in Irving for TSTSNBN - the other school allegedly still being considered are places like Indiana and Texas A&M, and those spots don't make sense. Those TSTSNBN neutral site games at the Meadowlands pay off yet again.

Blue Ribbon's preseason stuff is released. I'll break up their Top 25 and preaseason AA teams into different posts.

I'm excited that everyone seems to have KU #1. What stood out to me was Kentucky at #7, and Cal at #9. I guess Blue Ribbon isn't convinced all the pieces at UK will fit together as nicely as others think they well. If Cal really is that strong, Mike Montgomery is a contender for COTY. It also makes those home-and-homes KU and Cal will run the four seasons even more fun, and will help KU's RPI come Selection Sunday.

------------

Blue Ribbon has excellent taste putting Aldrich and Collins on the First Team. I'm not sure Aldrich will put up the numbers for NPOY, but maybe it won't matter if KU is 29-2 going into the tournaments.

Not sure how Kalin Lucas gets left off all four AA teams, especially if Michigan State is their #2 team.

I hope they are right about Favors being NOTY over John Wall.

I think we can pencil in Irving for TSTSNBN - the other school allegedly still being considered are places like Indiana and Texas A&M, and those spots don't make sense.
Stole this off the UConn board:
He is a 70% lean toward Puke right now. We have a few things going for us.1. We get the last visit.2. He is strait.
:porked:Kemba's a big impediment to scoring a 5-star PG this year, unless there's some sort of guarantee that he goes pro after this year, which is never a guarantee for a 6' PG.

Bill Self was in the booth for an interview during the Kansas-TSTSNBN football game last Saturday. When Self was asked if KU and TSTSNBN would ever have a regular-season series in basketball, Self's reply was along the lines of "It would be great for both schools, but you need to talk Coach K into it." The scuttle is that Coach K doesn't think playing a regular-season game in Allen Field House doesn't help his program, but letting KU play in Durham helps KU a bunch. So, a home-and-home won't happen.

As I think I've said in this thread, KU superfans think KU has big rivalries with the five other historically strong CBB programs (UNC, Kentucky, UCLA, TSTSNBN, Indiana), so it's personal when one of those turn down a game with KU. Coach K won't come to Lawrence, Roy Williams is too fond of KU to play against them, and Indiana is in a down cycle, so those three are out. KU plays at Pauley in the Hardwood Series this season. Calipari and Self want to schedule each other (the KU-Memphis game in STL in November was largely their work), so expect a KU-UK game in the next couple years, probably at a neutral site like St Louis or Chicago.

Mike DeCourcy's Top 10 Point Guards

1. Sherron Collins, Kansas. Collins is the Tyler Hansbrough of short, squat guys. He has been a team-changing player for three seasons and is about to make it four. He could end up winning NCAA titles with two completely different lineups around him.

Collins says: "There are some questions out there. All I'm going to do is be myself. Can I run a team? Make better decisions? Can I be a leader? That's pretty much what I hear."

2. John Wall, Kentucky. Frequently compared to Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose, Wall is not as physically powerful—but he enters college with more confidence in his ability to lead. And Wall's impact will be more immediate.

3. Kalin Lucas, Michigan State. Lucas needs to take greater control of games, the way Mateen Cleaves did while he ran the Spartans.

4. Devan Downey, South Carolina. He's on pace to surpass 2,000 points and 500 assists for his career, but this is his last chance to make it to the NCAA Tournament.

5. Kemba Walker, Connecticut. He runs his team beautifully. He gets the ball deep into defenses. Walker understands, though, that he must shoot better.

6. Nic Wise, Arizona. He shot 41.5 percent on 3-pointers last season as a complement to two NBA draft picks.

7. Abdul Gaddy, Washington. He was a 2009 McDonald's All American.

8. Jon Scheyer, TSTSNBN. He made 43.2 percent of his 3s after the switch to point guard last season.

9. Corey Fisher, Villanova. He should increase his 24.3-minute average.

10. Shelvin Mack, Butler. A power point, he averaged 4.4 rebounds as a freshman last season.

Scheyer's a fine SG, but he doesn't belong anywhere near a Top 10, or Top 20, list of PG's.I'm so tempted to fish Ripleys in the other thread...

If you do, I recommend using this as bait:
The nation’s top prospect – Harrison Barnes – has begun taking official visits. He kicked off the process by heading to Chapel Hill (N.C.) this past weekend.

“Obviously there’s a lot for me to process, but my initial feeling is that it was an absolutely phenomenal weekend.”

After taking an unofficial visit to Duke this past weekend, Winter Park High (Fla.) star Austin Rivers, who had been committed to Florida for the past year, officially re-opened his recruitment … Sort of.

Rivers contacted us today and told us, ”I’m gonna stay committed to Florida, but I’m gonna let Duke officially start to recruit me. Because I like Duke a lot. ”

But what does that mean?

Last night, Rivers, a 6-3 point guard who is rated the No. 5 prospect in the HighSchoolHoop top 50, told us, ”they (Duke) would love for me to come there, but they didn’t want to continue to recruit me because they have so much respect for Coach (Billy) Donovan at Florida. They said I would have to de-commit or say it’s OK.”

Rivers chose the latter, which means that Duke is free and clear to put on the full-court press.

This can’t be good for Florida because one visit to Duke changed Rivers from being firmly committed to the Gators to being on the same level with the Blue Devils.

Rivers told us last night that he was ”loving them kind of the same.”

“I talked to coach Donovan last night and told him that I want to be recruited by Duke too,” said Rivers. “They’re gonna have to respect that because this is my life. At the same time, I don’t want to de-commit right now because I just came from Duke and I want to make sure it’s not just emotion. I want to take my time with everything.”

This all started when Rivers’ father Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, who Rivers told us is ”pretty good friends” with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, urged his son earlier this summer to see what else was out there.

”He felt like I should go on other visits just in case anything ever happens,” said Rivers. ”He said if Florida is the right place, taking these other visits will just reaffirm that.”

The move has had the adverse effect. Rivers has no plans to visit either Duke or Florida again in the immediate future.

When asked if he had a timetable for a decision, Rivers said, “I don’t know to be honest. I just want to be able to relax and I’m just concentrating on Florida and Duke. I could possibly get it over with right away. I could possibly say that Florida is the place for me or I could say that I want to go to Duke. One big thing is that I want to see who commits where so I can see who I’ll be playing with. That will weigh heavy.”

Sounds like Duke's back court is about to get a major upgrade with Rivers and Irving.

And UNC fans, I hear Barnes is a lock for UNC. You guys should start partying and celebrating now. He's a heck of a player and a great kid too.

WTF is going on at Kansas? This sounds pretty bad.

http://www.kansan.com/news/2009/sep/23/pol...yers_insi/?news
Tyshawn Taylor dislocated his left thumb in the brawl, with an expected recovery time of about a month. Some of Tyshawn's Facebook status updates from yesterday:

"keep my name out ya' mouth for you get smacked in it ;;"

"never got outta character... I'm always a G about it ;;"

"#####s be muggin me ..you know I'm muggin back ;;"

The "muggin" one was from 3:13 pm, and the brawl broke out a little after 6:30. Tyshawn's Facebook account was shut down (presumably by Taylor himself) around midday today.

ETA: Tyshawn after midnight: "I got a dislocated finger ... from throwing a punch, so don't let the newspaper gas ya all up, aite,"

OK. There were two fights.

One took place in front of the student union at around 6:30 last night.

Another took place in front of Wescoe Hall (jock dorm) this morning.

It seems one of the football players and one of the basketball players were fighting over a girl, and things got way out of hand. If I had to guess, one of the football players found out Sherron Collins was banging his girlfriend, but that's not confirmed.

A football player got shoved down a flight of stairs by one of the Morris twins.

Tyshawn fought three football players to a draw. I hope for the football team's sake, those three guys were kickers and punters. If Tyshawn held his ground against three defensive starters, there's no way Jayhawks football will win the Big XII North.

 All the press has no trouble recognizing and naming the basketball players (most of the returning roster mixed it up either last night or this morning), but hardly any of the football players are famous enough to be recognized on campus (only 2 of the 15 believed to be involved have been named).

If you play fantasy college football, keep tabs on this story. WR Desmond Briscoe was definitely in the middle of this ####, and might have to miss a game over it.

rumor is one of the Morris twins threw a football player down some stairs.

Other rumors say the fights are a result of a football player beef with Sherron Collins (apparently over Collins' girlfriend).

Hope the details come out.

From the KU on-campus newspaper:

Link to story

A fight broke out among football and basketball players this morning after one of the Morris twins pushed a football player down stairs behind Budig Hall. According to Mary Skevington, Overland Park senior, who witnessed the initial outbreak of the brawl, players from both teams began throwing punches and shouting racial slurs at each other at 9:48 a.m.

Among them were the Morris twins, Mario Little, Sherron Collins, Tyshawn Taylor, Brady Morningstar, Travis Releford, Tyrel Reed, Thomas Robinson, Elijah Johnson and many other players. The only football players identified in the group were Dezmon Briscoe and Chris Harris, whom police from the KU Police Department were questioning.

Skevington said she heard a football player yell, "What did you say?" at 9:48 a.m. and run up a set of stairs behind Budig Hall. Skevington said she saw one of the Morris twins throw the football player down the stairs. She said the football player fell backwards down six stairs before being caught by a fellow football player. She said immediately after, several pairs of football and basketball players began fighting.

This screenshot of Tyshawn Taylor's Facebook shows several of his status updates from Tuesday morning. Taylor sustained an injury to his finger after a skirmish outside of the Burge Union on Tuesday evening. Taylor shut down his Facebook today shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Erryn Kindle, Eudora junior, said he heard one of the Morris twins tell the police later, "One of them just jumped out and threw his hands on me," referring to the football players who were involved in the fight.

Another source, who did not want to be identified, confirmed this information. This source described seeing football players running toward the scene from Sunnyside Avenue. They joined in the scuffle, which Skevington said continued for a few minutes.

"It all happened really fast," Skevington said. "There were a lot of people throwing punches."

Harrison Hems, San Diego senior, saw basketball and football players gathered in groups between Anschutz Library and the lower entrance to the Wescoe Underground. Hems said several basketball players were yelling at the group of football players. Hems said the group of football players continued to grow to 15 or more. He said police arrived on the scene after nearly five minutes of the players arguing with each other.

Shannon Jobe, Topeka sophomore, said she heard a football player tell the police one of the basketball players pushed a football player down the stairs.

Kindle said basketball players were trying to calm Collins down.

"Mario Little told me football players had beef with Sherron," Kindle said. "He said they were talking trash."

Joe Dooley, assistant coach of the basketball team, arrived while the police officers were questioning the basketball players.

After the initial yelling between teams subsided, the two separate groups of basketball and football players stood opposite each other, about 20 yards apart.

Police officers escorted some of the players inside Wescoe Hall shortly after the incident. The players were seen congregating outside the building near the entrance to The Underground. No police officers or players were available for questioning.

Sophomore guard Tyshawn Taylor was seen but not admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Tuesday night, a nursing supervisor said.

Associate Athletics Director Jim Marchiony confirmed that an incident occurred Tuesday evening in front of the Burge Union. The Lawrence Journal-World reported on its Web site that the incident involved members of the football and basketball teams. Marchiony did not confirm that.

“We’re aware of reports of an incident and we are fact-finding right now,” Marchiony said.

KU Public Safety Capt. Schuyler Bailey said campus police, which has jurisdiction on campus, would not be investigating the incident because no victim had come forward to file a report.

“Until someone comes forward, we don’t have a crime,” Bailey said.

Bailey said if a victim in the incident chose to report a crime, campus police would investigate but that there were no plans to investigate currently.

"Victim non-compliance happens often and it is not unusual for there to be a report to not be filed in an altercation incident," Bailey said.

“It has nothing to do with favoritism,” he said.

Player names and specific injuries have yet to be released by the Athletics Department.

A few photos from this morning's fracasNo pics yet of the chick that was the source of the disagreement between the student-athletes, but a well-placed source in Lawrence suspects a midwestern woman with a son that has a peanut allergy. :goodposting:

ETA: on a somewhat serious note, the basketball team used to have their pick of the jersey chasers. Now that the football team is competitive, jersey chasers that used to go hoops are starting to go football. I may have had the Collins thing backwards. It's equally likely that the chick broke up with Collins to go with a football player.

i dont think its happening. I still think he'll be in Durham. I know you guys all hate you know who, but i dont have any reason to not believe him when it comes to Barnes.

If Barnes has been schticking the whole time, someone needs to invite him to the FFA.
What is TPTSNBN's source? And if Barnes is set on TSTNBN, why take until spring to commit? If Barnes is as sharp as a tack as has been reputed, I'm sure that TS...'s reputation of having players leave much lower ranked than they've come in will come to play.
no idea what his source is. But he knew about Dawkins before anyone. Nobody else on on the duke boards knew, not even the premium sites. (and BDN usually knows about everything at least a few weeks before its reported on Rivals)And as for Duke's reputation, that doesn't really apply to players at this position. They've produced quite a few quality wings that have gone pretty high in the draft (hill, Deng, Battier, Dunleavy, Donte Jones, Henderson, redick)

Not all of them have been good pros (although the majority are at least rotation players) but they all developed their games in Durham.
Amusingly, I thought it was kind of cute that the FFA had a knitting thread and decided to check out the first couple of posts. Quite the cloak and daggger routine - - but great to see college basketball talk. Ah, everyone hates Duke in here. How original.

Not sure who the poster that shall not be named is, but Duke insiders knew about Andre Dawkins within about a week of Elliot Williams leaving. Everyone. It was a very well-kept secret among those who were given the info - - in other words, the list of people who knew wasn't long, but those of us who knew were pretty much threatened with revocation of all access to future info if it got out.

TLEF is here. He's a Duke fan.
Right, thanks; I just read up and saw his posts. Just not sure why Duke needs to be renamed and everything. I'm guessing this Ripley's poster ruined things for some people? Well, in any case I went to Duke, and am hoping that this thread can continue, unless its sole raison d'etre is to hate on the Blue Devils. :lmao:

No, the idea behind this thread was to have a place to discuss CBB (mostly recruiting, it being the summer and all) in a sane (ie. Ripleys-free) manner. It's been good, hopefully it'll stay that way.Don't be so defensive, killer.

:goodposting: Just asking for the lay of the land, really. Thanks for the explanation.

Doron Lamb (Oak Hill, #21 overall and #3 SG Rivals) has Oklahoma and Kansas as his leaders. IIRC, Lamb will be at Late Night in the Phog. OU already has three SG/SF commits in this class, including two four-star guys (SF Cameron Clark and SG TJ Taylor, both from Texas), so KU likes their chances with Lamb.

KU should have openings at SG and SF next season. Tyshawn Taylor will either turning pro or move to PG, and Xavier Henry is probably a one-and-done. So, KU can sell a possible starting spot to 2010 wings. Dunno if that will help with Harrison Barnes among the SFs, but it might help with KU's second choice at SF, Roscoe Smith (also an Oak Hill guy).

MMA?:rimshot:
Maybe not. From an interview with an anonymous KU football player:
Basically, it started with a female. This dates back to last semester. I don't know who exactly the female was dating. She was dating one of the football players and one of the basketball players started fooling around with her. This all leads back to an incident that happened at The Hawk last semester. There was a feud brewing then and it's kinda calmed down since then. And I guess this woman escalated it to this point now.

What happened to Tyshawn? He said on facebook he dislocated his finger in a punch.

I heard he swung at somebody and something happened where he fell down and [that is when he] dislocated [his thumb].

What happened in the incident last semester?:

One of the basketball players got into it with one of the football players at The Hawk. All of this has been personally documented because Mangino has been banned the football players from The Hawk because of this incident. There was an incident that happened there and it continued to the Towers parking lot. It got real hectic there and it got broken up by Sherron [Collins] and one of the football players. That was last semester. That's what it all started from.

Has there been other situations like this?:

It's been an ongoing feud. It dates back to when I got here in (year redacted to protect his identity). In 2005, there was a feud between Keith Langford and the football players and Aaron Miles and the football players. There's always been a feud between the two. I can even say at other colleges, it's the same way. It's an ego thing, basically.

On whether there will be other fights:

[it's] probably not [going to continue] because Lew Perkins and the coaches are involved. This is already on ESPN. From what I hear, they're embarrassed because it represents the kind of characters they are.

Right now, I'm going to say this is it. But honestly…this won't be [the last incident between football and basketball]. It will probably die down and it will come back up. Maybe it won't happen between these players but it will come back in the future.
The brawl thread at the KU football board at Scout is over 1600 posts already. I haven't read more than one-fourth of it. Lots of PM requests for details the mods won't let stay on the board, as well as fans of other teams stopping by to gloat.

In the "Good KU hoops news" category... Harrison Barnes will attend Late Night in the Phog. Reports of Barnes as a UNC lock may be premature. It looks like Barnes clearly prefers UNC over Duke, but is still considering Kansas.

how does Barnes "clearly prefer UNC over Duke?"They've made up ground, but this is pure speculation.

That's my thinking too. I'm a Heel fan with a premium membership at the UNC Scout board and have been monitoring the Barnes rumors daily. There's a smattering of "insiders" there who think he's a UNC lean at this point, but the consensus (of which I am a part) is that he's 50/50 or maybe a slight Duke lean, with KU a distant third. The latest over there is that he's taking all five visits on an accelerated schedule and plans to decide by the November signing period, which is a change from his previous statements. I think that's more evidence that it's down to UNC and Duke- they're the only ones he knows a lot about already, so if he's moving up his decisionmaking schedule, that has to be good news for them,

Aerial Assault there is one "accepted" Duke fan on this entire board, TLEF. That's it. And TLEF is a smart guy. What he says to me via PM is VERY different than what he posts on here. He might be a politician because he knows how to work this pro unc group. I tip my hat to him. But me, I'll state FACTS about Duke, and I won't hide just because unc has had a great run recently. In fact the holes have had their best run ever, winning 2 titles in the last 5 years. That's outstanding. Its also been our program's worst 5 years as far as NCAA tournament record under K. I have no problem admitting that either. But the funny thing is, despite this HORRIBLE 5 years for Duke, we've won 8 of the last 11 ACC Titles. We now have the record for most wins in a decade (although some not so bright people around here will argue that fact) So i say, let the unc fans enjoy what they have done. But at the same time, I laugh, as they talk about how our program is dying (that has been said multiple times by lots of posters here) When our program has its worst 5 years ever, we're still doing pretty darn good. When UNC has their worst down period, they go 8-20, and get blown out 3 times in 1 season to us. K is hauling in his best recruiting classes he's had since our run with Brand, Battier, Avery and J-Will, Dunleavy, Boozer. Its coming, and its gonna be a lot of fun. And I'll be here to cheer us on, and give back exactly what they've given Duke fans over the last few years. :banned:

Look for Irving to commit to Duke by Tuesday of next week, if not sooner.

"There is a possibility that I could commit, yes," Kyrie Irving told TDD. "But I will not commit on my visit. I want to be able to come home and talk things over with my parents on however many visits I take."

Irving will be on campus beginning Friday and will spend a total of 48 hours with the Duke coaches and players - leaving sometime on Sunday.

Many recruiting analysts feel the Blue Devils may be the team to beat for Irving after he eliminated long time leader Indiana on the heels of in-home visits with both programs as well as Seton Hall, Connecticut, Texas A&M, and Georgia Tech. Since those visits, Connecticut has apparently been eliminated as well.

On the heels of the Duke visit, Irving told TDD that the official visit could very well be the final piece to the Blue Devil puzzle.

"I'm going to be looking at the campus and the facilities. I want to go with some of the guys to classes to see what it's like to be a student and an athlete there. I want to know what it'd be like if I end up there."

Throughout the entire recruiting process, the Blue Devils and Irving have gone over and talked through a number of issues, but one message has remained clear to the nation's No.2 rated point guard and No.5 overall prospect.

"Coach has told me a lot that he wants me to be their point guard."

I love that he's calling K his Coach already. And Irving and Barnes have repeated talked about how much they'd love to play with each other. Shhhhhh. :lmao:

In the "Good KU hoops news" category... Harrison Barnes will attend Late Night in the Phog. Reports of Barnes as a UNC lock may be premature. It looks like Barnes clearly prefers Duke, but is still considering Kansas.
That is correct. Barnes will be attending Late Nigh in the Phog. I'm sure he'll have a great time too. And I fixed that quote for ya. :lmao:

Ah, everyone hates Duke in here. How original.
No, the idea behind this thread was to have a place to discuss CBB (mostly recruiting, it being the summer and all) in a sane (ie. Ripleys-free) manner. It's been good, hopefully it'll stay that way.Don't be so defensive, killer.
 Just asking for the lay of the land, really. Thanks for the explanation.
Want to join a college BB fantasy hoops league? $20, points scoring, I'll probably get it cranking up at some point next month. We've already got 10 people in.

I would love to - - thank you! I used to run one in law school, but this was before you could easily get everyone's stats off the Internet. Please mark me down.
