Do we know for certain what year it is on the island these days? I know the folks that got off the island got as far ahead as 2007. But once the bomb went off we learned the flight in 2004 was still moving ahead in 2004 and the island was under water. When the bomb went off, we assume that things changed in 2004 as the people didn't crash on the island. But seeing how the real Locke was killed by Ben in 2007 and that hasn't happened yet, how is Locke dead? Do we have anything to set a timeline for when they reappeared on the island?
But Locke's not dead - as we saw his post LA X story. The writers apparently have set up a scenario where everyone on the island has an alternate LA X version. The people on the island are in their divergent timeline - so Ben did kill Locke. And Juliet is alive off island. The writers appear to have written a bad scenario where the divergent timeline should have occured in the year the bomb went off - that was the event changer. It changed all sort of events off island - but the story of the 815 islanders is contingent on pre-crash events that have now never occured. The story breaks down under scrutiny. I would love to discuss but I think most will not want to follow the logic.
I thought they said it wasnt an alternate timeline, rather its more of a "what if" situation. In this scenario, the bomb didnt work, rather it just moved them ahead in time and all the events still happened. This is what we see on the island. What we are seeing off island is simply what would have happened to these people (and perhaps later on the island) if the pocket of electomagnitism was destroyed in 1977. One timeline has nothing to do with the other, the writers are just showing us what COULD/WOULD have been had that pocket been destroyed, not necessarily that an alternate world was created.

We don't know for certain. From the Interview posted earlier in the thread:
Is there a relationship between Island reality and sideways reality? Will they run parallel for the remainder of the season? Will they fuse together? Might one fade away?

LINDELOF: For us, the big risk that we’re taking in the final season of the show is basically this very question. [Lindelof then explains the show has replaced the trademark “whoosh!” sound effect marking the segue between Island present story and flashbacks or flash-forwards, thus calling conspicuous attention to the relationship between the Island world and the Sideways world.] This is the critical mystery of the season, which is, “What is the relationship between these two shows?” And we don’t use the phrase “alternate reality,” because to call one of them an “alternate reality” is to infer that one of them isn’t real, or one of them is real and the other is the alternate to being real.

CUSE: But the questions you’re asking are exactly the right questions. What are we to make of the fact that they’re showing us two different timelines? Are they going to resolve? Are they going to connect? Are they going to co-exist in parallel fashion? Are they going to cross? Do they intersect? Does one prove to be viable and the other one not? I think those are all the kind of speculations that are the right speculations to be having at this point in the season.

LINDELOF: But it is going to require patience. We’ve taught the audience how to be patient thus far, so while they’re getting a lot of mythological answers on the island early in the season, this idea of what is the relationship between the two [worlds] is a little bit more of a slow burn.

Oh...she is always Carol Vessie to me...even in Happy Gilmore.

Something else I found interesting, that was also mentioned earlier in the thread was that Jacob touched Kate, Sawyer, Jack, Sayid, etc. with his bare hand. NotLocke mentioned to Sawyer in the cave that Jacob came to him when he was vulnerable, etc. and touched him.

Then if we look at his visit to Ilana, he was wearing gloves when he touched her. Does the barrier of the gloves not give Ilana the "pre-destination" that Jacob gave to everyone else?

Not an attack on you - but how dumb does that sound? It's so dumb it's not even correct. They changed prior events as well. IE, and how does Locke's Dad being alive fit in? So everybody who ever died on the island is potentially alive post LA X.Any why do the even bother hinting at a "memory" moment between characters post LA X. There's no event to have a memory under those rules. If the above post about "what-if" turns out to be correct, that would be an epic cop out.

what's this "constant" shtick everyone seems to be fond of in here?
Do you remember when they were all jumping around through time? This was slowly killing them because they didn't have a single point of reference outside of the time jumps. Daniel Faraday, the weird, bearded physicist guy, introduced the concept of a "constant." This "constant" is a person who you have met and care about in alternate timelines, and it essentially helps to "ground" you so your brain doesn't fry.Constant
thanks. still doesn't make any sense, but I appreciate the explanation. Guess I missed how they got rid of the nosebleeds.

Not true, Nikki was immobilized when bitten by a spider with Paolo and buried alive.Oh and a Nikki, Shannon & Kate sandwich will do me fine.

It's not a real interview of the LOST creators if "mythology" isn't mentioned.

I still watch the show and enjoy it, but...

I remember watching the very first episode and wondering if they were gonna be stuck on an island with dinosaurs or giant evil robots. I still wish they were.

I dunno why I keep reading this thread. It only leaves me more confused (if that is possible) then when I stop watching the show. Still.

I wonder why Kate's name wasn't on the wall. We know Jacob visited her in the past.

When I watch, I the alternate timeline as a fake for some reason. Not sure why but to me, the real Locke is dead. The real Benjamin is on the island...etc.

Maybe it is because we've followed the Island incarnations of the characters for so long, these others seems like dopplegangers or something.

Women can't serve as protectors of important islands with mystical powers. Pretty sure Milton spelled that out in Paradise Lost.

If by younger Eloise you mean Alexandra Krosney then she might get my vote.

Im shocked...completely shocked that the Dude may not like a possible outcome of this show.
I know this comes from the fact that I am the one of the few that looks at the quality of the story (explanations and logic - which can be argued logic doesn't apply to Lost). I would hope anyone that has followed this show would be unsatisified if it ends up we are watching post LA X storylines that are "ficticious" (possibel futures). I would hope that even the Lost-fanatics would get that.

I have a feeling the "alternate" time line is the way out for this show to have the happiest possible ending. As Jack said nearly everything they've been through has been miserable and the writers have killed nearly everyone.

I kind of think Aaron is the kid we saw walking around, and he is going to be one of them while Walt is going to be the other.
If Walt is the bad guy I'm giving up on this show.
We know Walt is very special. We also know that the others took Aaron, and as Jack's dad's grandson, he could also be the "Shepard" on the list.
No I'd give up the show because they're making the black guy the bad guy.

It comes from the fact that you have been complaining about the show in these threads for quite some time.

That's your filter. Most my posts have questioned the logic - or lack of it - used in the show to explain events and actions. You call it complain - I call it critique.

I heard on local sports talk radio that they are bringing in Dane Cooke to play Boone's step-brother in a flash sideways. Apparently he has links to the convenience store where Charlie saw Ghost Hurley and flipped out.

Not sure if he can really pull of the role.

Hopefully he won't have any lines.

"I saw a fat young boy named Hurley eating an ice cream cone, ... I smashed it in his face. You know that kid is going to remember me when he's 37."

So....any chance teacher Ben kills teacher Locke....again!
Locke doesn't throw away the old coffee filter when he's done making coffee and Ben smashes his head with the coffee pot. "I told you people to throw away the old filter when your done making coffee and I meant it!", Ben yells to the rest of the staff as Locke lies on the floor bleeding.
