Potential camp casualty: Jake Long's rookie contract. Four-time Pro Bowl left tackles don't hit the free-agent market, and there's little chance that Long will kick off a free-agent tour next offseason. To retain Long, the Dolphins will use the franchise tag, even though the cost of doing so is $15.36 million (120 percent of Long's 2012 cap number of $12.8 million). An extension this year won't come cheap or free up any cap room -- Cleveland Browns left tackle Joe Thomas' contract extension last August increased his 2011 cap number by more than $5 million -- but it makes sense, as it will lock up a very large, very talented piece of the puzzle for this franchise.
:wall:
Let's read this terrible POS article for what it is. It never says Jake Long is going to be a camp casualty, not even close. The article says his "cap number" or rookie salary" will become a camp casualty as well it should. How many Left Tackles come right into the league and are a perennial Pro Bowler from day 1? Jake Long is not going anywhere. The RT they drafted in the 2nd round is going to play...Right Tackle. This team is not talented enough to just let Jake Long walk or go for a couple of draft picks, let's be honest here.

Miami Dolphins to lose $10K for Angry Birds downloads

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League editor

Every once in a while, we write a post that has no higher purpose than to kindly tell you to read something cool. This is one of those posts.

Jeff Darlington's piece on iPads is a great look at how tablet technology has quickly changed how NFL teams operate. Just read the thing, please. And if there are any Miami Dolphins out there reading on their iPads, please handle your device with care.

“They gave us a long list of things you’re not supposed to do,” Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill said.

Forgetting to bring it to a team meeting will cost you ... $10,000. Downloading Angry Birds will cost you ... $10,000.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, there is no app yet available that will solve their wide receiver position.

Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins clash on contract, report says

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League editor

Conventional wisdom says that Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III's completed contracts will result in the rest of the unsigned first-round draft picks quickly following suit. The Miami Dolphins may have something to say about that.

ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio reports that the Dolphins are "digging in" during negotiations with quarterback Ryan Tannehill with respect to potential "offset" language in his contract. The Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins did not insist on such language for Luck and RG3, which helps protect teams financially in case a player is released.

Dawn Aponte, the Miami Dolphins vice president of administration, once worked for the league's management council and is reportedly insisting on offset language, according to Florio.

It remains to be seen if this is a serious concern or the closest thing we can find to rookie contract drama in a year that is expected to go smoothly. (For the most part.) Reggie Bush believes that Tannehill is going to be No. 3 on the depth chart; missing any practice time would not help the rookie's case.

Matt Moore takes first snap at Miami Dolphins camp

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League editor

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross told NFL Network's Jeff Darlington way back in May that Matt Moore was the quarterback most likely to start Week 1.

As training camp begins, that's still exactly how we feel. The Palm Beach Post notes that Moore took the first snap with the first team as Dolphins camp officially opened on Friday morning. David Garrard also got some work with the first team.

Many outside observers believe Garrard has the edge in this veteran battle, but we like Moore's chances. (Garrard, for one, has to show he can stay healthy.)

Rookie Ryan Tannehill is now officially a holdout. He had a huge uphill battle to climb out of the No. 3 hole over the next month, and even a short holdout won't help his chances.

Braylon Edwards works out for the Miami Dolphins

By Brian McIntyre

Around the League writer

Ken Rogers, a supervising producer of HBO's "Hard Knocks" series, reported Sunday that free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards worked out for the Miami Dolphins, according to Ross Tucker of SiriusXM Radio.

The Dolphins are considered to be thin at the receiver position after trading Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears for a pair of third-round draft picks. The current top four receivers on the depth chart are Chad Johnson, Legedu Naanee, Brian Hartline and Davone Bess.

Armando Salguero, who provides blanket coverage of the Dolphins for the Miami Herald, characterized Edwards as a "SERIOUS option" to be signed by the Dolphins.

Edwards, 29, has caught 341 passes for 5,323 yards and 39 touchdowns in his 99-game career with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. Knee surgery limited Edwards to just nine games in 2011, and the 49ers released Edwards late in the season.

Last week, Edwards worked for the Seattle Seahawks, but he was not signed. The 'Hawks opted to sign Antonio Bryant, a receiver who missed the last two seasons with a chronic knee injury, instead.

UPDATE: Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin confirmed during a Sunday media session that Braylon Edward worked out for the Miami Dolphins last Tuesday. According to NFL.com and NFL Network's Jeff Darlington, there is no indication that he will be signed.

Ryan Tannehill: 'I’m in it' to start for Miami Dolphins

By Brian McIntyre

Around the League writer

With the ink still drying on what NFL.com and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports is a four-year, $12.688 million contract, Miami Dolphins first-round quarterback Ryan Tannehill made his practice debut on Sunday.

First-year head coach Joe Philbin said that Tannehill threw the ball well in his first practice. NFL.com and NFL Network's Jeff Darlington reports that Tannehill got more reps than any other quarterback today, but with the second-team offense.

Even though Tannehill is not expected to start right away for the Dolphins, first-team reps will eventually come and the rookie from Texas A&M is approaching the situation as if he's in the hunt to be the starter against the Houston Texans on September 9.

"I feel like I'm in it," Tannehill said. "Maybe I'm naive, but coaches haven't given me any indication that I'm not, so I'm going to go out there every day and do my best to get better every day and hopefully win the job."

With Tannehill, Matt Moore and David Garrard competing for the job, Darlington adds that the Dolphins have nearly doubled the number of available reps, going from 75 to nearly 150 to allow for a proper evaluation of the quarterbacks.

Karlos Dansby spoke out against Philbin today...time to move Dansby if they can at all. If not just cut him, $3m in salary, we ain't winning many games, cut him now. I don't want any players on this team right now that think they are above this coach for a second. I hope Philbin is more like this quick release of Johnson than the guy I saw pleading with Johnson to stop his antics on Hard Knocks.

Depth charts released today...QB1-David GarrardQB2-Matt MooreQB3-Ryan Tannehill
 We're screwed.
Anything else new?Excited to go see the Fins play here in Charlotte next week despite the ongoing suckitude.
QB1/2-Moore Tannehill...I think T-Hill might take the field week 1, he looked way to comfy out there moving around. QB3-Pat Devlin...they want to keep this kid in the fold somewhere. QB4-Garrard-will be cut released so his salary is not guaranteed and then may be brought back after week 1. Garrard had knee surgery, team is uber quiet about it, no timetable really. I think Garrard could be toast.

Easy, brother. He should have kept his mouth shut, but nothing that he said was that egregious, unless I missed something. Here is the quote that I saw - "“You don’t just give up on people, especially when you know their character and you know what they’re all about,” Dansby said, via the Palm Beach Post. “Let’s stand behind him. He should shut his mouth, and not speak out against team decisions, and he should be spoken to about it, but cut him? Not with you on that one. Not at all.

I think it's important that the team, all 53 of them are on the same page. This team is learning quickly that 2012 is still rebuild as Tannehill is looking like he will take a lot more snaps than many thought at first, in fact he may start week 1. Dansby is a vet, maybe he would like to be somewhere else. He should have kept his mouth shut, and if he doesn't want to or doesn't say tomorrow that he supports Philbin than just get rid of him. He has not been the #2 MLB in the league or whatever we paid him. I'm pushing it Chuck I understand but anyone who is not on board with what this HC wants done, good bye as far as I'm concerned. No one on this roster is above the coach, this team does not have the talent to have any other attitude than "Show us the way Obi Won"

This team has been horses hit for years and I'm tired of it. I'll be relieved if Tannehill is at least average or can make the top 20 in the league for starting QBs. Chad was a major distraction and him gone is better for everyone. You might think the Phins asked him a lot about the Pats scheme but since he didn't do anything there either so he was probably useless.

Why Dolphins should start Ryan Tannehill

By James Walker | ESPN.com

DAVIE, Fla. -- I rarely flip-flop in the AFC East blog. But due to an unexpected set of circumstances, this is one of those rare instances.

It's time for the Miami Dolphins to start rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill for the entire 2012 season. Yes, I said it. Now let it sink in.

Forget about my prior comments entering training camp. I previously wrote that Tannehill's two-day holdout and late arrival all but end the rookie's chances of jumping two veteran quarterbacks in training camp.

But crazy things happen in the NFL -- especially if you're the Dolphins. Miami had a topsy-turvy 72 hours that included projected starting quarterback David Garrard's unexpected knee surgery and receiver Chad Johnson's release following his arrest for alleged domestic violence.

No one saw this coming a few weeks ago. Now the Dolphins must adjust.

Miami needs to be decisive. It's time to start Tannehill this week against the Carolina Panthers and get him three full preseason games with the first team in preparation for Week 1 of the regular season.

No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck is starting at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. No. 2 pick Robert Griffin III is starting for the Washington Redskins. Even Cleveland Browns rookie Brandon Weeden, who was drafted 14 picks behind Tannehill, is expected to start in Week 1.

What are the Dolphins waiting for? It's time for Miami to play its rookie quarterback.

"It's possible, we'll see," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said after practice Monday. "At this stage in the game we're going to let the practices play out. We're in no rush to name anybody. We [have a] game at Carolina on Friday, and we’ve had two decent days of preparation so far, and we have two more heavy practices coming up, so we’re going to look at how the guys play."

The days of waiting a year or two for a quarterback to develop are outdated. Coaches get fired too fast in the NFL to have their franchise player sitting on the bench for too long. Philbin gets one year as a grace period. After that, the pressure is on to win in Miami.

Philbin and Tannehill should go through this grace period together in 2012. Let's be honest: Miami is in a rebuilding year. This team is learning a new West Coast offense and a new 4-3 defense, and it doesn't have enough dynamic playmakers on either side to consistently win games.

The Dolphins are not a playoff team regardless of whether Garrard, Moore or Tannehill is the quarterback. Therefore, you're better off playing the rookie who can develop into your long-term solution. Philbin and Tannehill can take their lumps together this season and learn on the job. Then, the pair will be well-positioned to take flight for Miami in 2013.

Tannehill could be the best quarterback on the roster right now. He was certainly the most impressive in Miami's preseason debut. Tannehill was 14-for-21 with 167 yards and a touchdown. He showed many of the traits Miami raved about in the draft. Tannehill was poised and in control of the offense, and he made a lot of good throws.

"I try to be calm on the field," Tannehill said. " try to give off the essence of being calm in the pocket, being calm in the huddle. You know, we’re going to go down and score every drive. I just try to give confidence to the other players on the field."

Dolphins veteran quarterback Matt Moore was 7-of-12 for 79 yards and an interception. The incumbent had some good plays and bad plays. After the game, Philbin was asked how big the gap is between Moore and Tannehill.

"I don’t think it’s huge," Philbin said candidly. "I think it's relatively close, probably."

If that is the case, what is there to lose?

We know what Moore's ceiling is. He is 13-12 in his six-year career. Moore is an average starter but a good backup. He's never played in a West Coast offense before, and you can see it in practice. In many ways, Moore is a square peg trying to fit into a round hole with the Dolphins.

Meanwhile, Tannehill has the potential to be Miami's best quarterback since Dan Marino. Why waste a year of that immense potential on the bench? Tannehill played under Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in college at Texas A&M and knows this West Coast offense well. The progress Tannehill has made from minicamp in the spring to the third week of training camp has been impressive.

Garrard was clearly winning the quarterback competition before his unexpected knee surgery. At that time I thought the former Pro Bowler gave Miami the best chance to win. But Garrard's injury opened the door for the Tannehill era to begin. Miami should embrace this opportunity instead of running from it.

Moore and Garrard both have one year left on their contracts. There is a good chance neither veteran quarterback will be on Miami's roster next season.

But Tannehill will be on the roster in 2013. And it's best for the entire Dolphins organization that he enters next season with a full year of experience under his belt.

"We'll just have to trust the gut. ... We'll see how it unfolds," Philbin said. "At that time, if there are no differences statistically, if it looks even and production is even, then I think we’ll have to go with a gut instinct on who can lead the team and give us the best chance to win."

Stop playing musical chairs with your quarterbacks, Miami. The future is now.

Start Ryan Tannehill.

Lots of good signs coming from Tannehill. I think Philbin is making him earn the starting position though and I like that. Earning the position (and Philbin putting him in the position to earn it), means that the vets who have so much respect for Moore for reviving the team last season will warm up to the idea that Tannehill earned the position too, putting Tannehill in a good position leadership-wise. I think it helps Tannehill mentally that he'll have earned it too and hopefully the competition aspect of it will provide him some extra motivation to keep improving. I think Tannehill starts game 1 and if it's because his play earned it, he'll be in a much better position to succeed long-term.

I'm usually against starting rookie QBs, but this might be the right choice.

Dolphins to start Ryan Tannehill

Ryan Tannehill was named the Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback Monday for the team's season-opener at the Houston Texans.

Will the Miami Dolphins cut David Garrard?

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League editor

So we've established that Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is the man now. It remains uncertain what the rest of the depth chart will look like.

Matt Moore and David Garrard are scheduled to make $5 million combined (Garrard $2.75 million, Moore $2.25 million). With Tannehill the starter, it's not hard to argue that he needs only one relatively expensive veteran backup. It was suggested in the Palm Beach Post last week that the Dolphins could reach an injury settlement with Garrard following his knee surgery.

It's a complicated decision because Garrard was on top of the depth chart before the injury. But the Post reported he was still on crutches Monday and The Miami Herald writes that Garrard won't be ready for the start of the season. He missed all of last season and has yet to take a hit. The Herald also points out that only two teams have less cap space than Miami.

It wouldn't be surprising if the Dolphins decided to keep all three quarterbacks, but it seems like an unnecessary luxury for a rebuilding team. There's plenty of reason to believe Garrard won't have much value to them, so they may not bother to keep him around.

did a little searching and didn't find any info on how Lamar Miller has been so far this pre-season. What's the news?

Not gonna be a factor the 1st 6-8 weeks of the season. If/when Miami is destined for 4-12 or worse, then you'll see more Miller. Non factor in the games, camp has been just OK.

More than happy to post back at this. now I have a slightly different take and I was reading some stuff by Boston Fred tonight and he brings up some valid points. I see Miami running about 400 carries for the season. i don't see them winning a lot of games and there will be few pop to run out the clock , Green Bay went 15-1 last season, they passed the whole game, variety of reasons but I don't anticipate a Miami RB coming close to 250-275 carries, that will not happen. 100 of these runs will be split amongst Tannehill, RB3/FB/H-Back, leaves about 30 for Thomas and Bush. Bush will line up wide a lot and I think he can get 15-17 touches a game but I see bush catching a lot of passes not grinding it out. BF thinks Bush will run up the middle, I kind of differ how often Miami run into the belly of the line. I have seen Daniel Thomas start to show some wiggle in the preseason, seems capable of catching the ball some, and he is going to get the short yardage and goal line work.I see Bush getting 250-275 touches but a good chunk will be thru receptions and I think Daniel Thomas is going to command 10-12 carries a game.

This is frustrating to see, after having to watch what we are putting on the field at WR right now. Another Ireland whiff? Maybe he was insulted that Braylon didnt remember him? He tried out the same day as Steinbach. Great choice we made...for a change.

Rotoworld...

Braylon Edwards has been "the most consistent of the big receivers who can make explosive plays down the field" in Seahawks training camp.

The Tacoma News Tribune notes that Edwards makes at least one "eye-opening" play every day. "I find it hard to believe he will not be on Seattle's roster when the season begins," says beat writer Eric Williams. If Edwards' knee is back to full health -- and all reports thus far suggest it is -- he's better bet than "starter" Golden Tate for fantasy value at split end. Aug 23 - 3:59 PM

Dolphins have tough decisions at QB

By James Walker | ESPN.com

The Miami Dolphins' quarterback picture was crystal clear two weeks ago. Veteran David Garrard was clearly winning the quarterback derby, Matt Moore was the incumbent pushing Garrard, and rookie Ryan Tannehill was a late arrival to training camp trying to catch up.

It's amazing how much has changed.

Two weeks later, Tannehill is the Week 1 starter, Garrard is recovering from knee surgery and little-known quarterback Pat Devlin is pushing for a roster spot. The Dolphins now have some big decisions to make at quarterback, and it won't be easy.

The Dolphins will keep three quarterbacks. But there are plenty of ways they can go with this decision.

Let's examine the possibilities.

Option No. 1: Keep Tannehill, Garrard and Moore

Analysis: Miami could keep Garrard and Moore on the roster to backup Tannehill. These are the three best quarterbacks on the roster, although sometimes that doesn't always matter in the decision. This trio would give the Dolphins a steady group of quarterbacks. If Tannehill gets injured, the drop off to Garrard or Moore wouldn't be much. It might actually improve, due to experience. But money and contracts will weigh on this decision, which makes it possible that Garrard or Moore might not make the cut.

Option No. 2: Keep Tannehill, Moore and Devlin

Analysis: Devlin is much improved and getting better each week. His improvement is opening some options for the Dolphins. One of those options is to cut Garrard or work out an injury settlement if he's not healthy before the regular season. The tough part about this decision is Garrard was clearly the best quarterback in training camp before his knee injury. The Dolphins might be letting go of the best quarterback on the team. But the decision already has been made to start Tannehill in Week 1. Garrard is still rehabbing. So Miami might think it's best to keep a healthy Moore as the backup and Devlin at No. 3 in case he develops into something.

Option No. 3: Keep Tannehill, Garrard and Devlin

Analysis: The final option is to work out a trade for Moore. But several factors have to be involved for this to work. First, the Dolphins must be confident Garrard will be healthy enough to backup Tannehill in Week 1. Second, there has to be a market for Moore, which could require a quarterback injury or two this preseason. Moore has 25 career starts and went 6-3 in his final nine starts for Miami last season. He could have value to a team desperate to replace an injured quarterback on the fly.

The Dolphins have one week (Aug. 31) to make their final roster cuts.

Which option do you like best for Miami?
