if the Vikings left town. What people who support the funding of stadiums with public dollars fail to mention is that the ~$650 million could go a LONG way towards infrastructure improvements, the recruitment of new businesses to the State (you know, companies that will provide many, MANY more good-paying jobs, sell more houses near said jobs, get more kids attending classes in the local school districts, et al), and/or reducing our tax burden and/or deficit. Yet here were are...talking about giving nine-figures of our money to billionaires, so that millionaires can play professional sports for a living.
Folks are basically running on a platform of smaller government and reducing "welfare," yet they are more than willing to bend over, grab their butt-cheeks, and say "I'm ready when you are, cowboy!" when the Pohlads, Taylors, or Wilfs come calling. I'll never forgive (or forget) the Republican representative from New Ulm and his leading the charge for a new Twins stadium using public money. Then practically in the same sentence/speech talking about how smaller government and tax cuts were the answer to fixing our problems as a State. The hypocrisy is absolutely astonishing! Yet the sheep and lemmings step up to the trough, asking for more.
yea you're right, I'm just pissed I guess and looking for anything to make me feel better'Andy Dufresne said:'mozzy84 said:this is older but it serves the purpose, they would be fools to let the team leave, like I said I don't get it....all these politicians need to go.http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2011/11/08/good-question-how-much-will-minn-lose-if-vikings-leave/MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — If the Minnesota Vikings left Minnesota, there would be a loss to the economy both directly and indirectly. But how severe that loss is depends on your perspective.
So, how much do Vikings players pay in income taxes?
According to the team, Vikings players paid $10 million in state withholding taxes in 2010. Staff and coaches paid $1.5 million. Also, visiting NFL players pay a percentage of their salary in income tax to Minnesota, in 2010 that came to about $1 million.
How much does the state make in game day taxes?
In 2010, tickets led to $3 million in sales taxes. Tickets also provided $4.4 million in an admissions tax that goes to the sports commission.
Also, the sales and use tax on merchandise sales in the stadium was $100,000. Concession sales led to $400,000 in tax receipts. Liquor led to $300,000 in 2010, along with city of Minneapolis liquor taxes of $200,000.
The total in direct contributions from the Vikings games to Minnesota is about $21.5 million.
If the state paid $650 million for a new stadium in Arden Hills, it would take 31 years to recoup that money, at a rate of $21.5 million per year.
• What kind of impact does each game have on other businesses?
The University of Minnesota extension service did an analysis of the impact of a 2010 Vikings playoff game, and put that amount at about $5.8 million.
They only include the 25,000 out-of-metro visitors to the games, because economists believe that local residents would simply shift their spending to other activities rather than stop the spending entirely if the Vikings left.
In that playoff game, visitors spent $1.5 million on restaurants, $1.4 million on hotels, $1.2 million on retail, along with $720,000 on entertainment, $657,000 on transportation, and $211,000 on parking.
For a regular season game, the impact would likely be less than the money spent on one playoff game, according to researchers.
Still, $50 million would be a sizable impact for 10 dates.
To compare that to other local events: Meet Minneapolis said the 2011 American Legion convention brought 12,000 people to town, with an economic impact $13.572 million.
In economic impact, Minnesota would need four of those major conventions to equal an entire season of Vikings gamesLooks to me like, by those numbers, it actually wouldn't be a good investment.
.500? No way...a win in the division is very unlikely, and "easier" games like STL and SEA are still on the road. Right, right... I said .500 if things break right, "things" being a relatively small amount of injuries to key players, the team playing better than expected, taking care of the football, adding the right draft choices/ free agents, pulling out a couple wins we don't expect, etc. All things being equal, I'm thinking more like 4-6 wins. And a lot of praying that the 2013 season and beyond are still in MN..500? No way...a win in the division is very unlikely, and "easier" games like STL and SEA are still on the road. GD it!Browns work Kalil out, talk heats up that Vikings will go elsewherePosted by Michael David Smith on April 18, 2012, 4:25 PM EDTVirtually every mock draft that has been published has the Colts taking Andrew Luck first, the Redskins taking Robert Griffin III second, and the Vikings taking Matt Kalil third. But with eight days to go before the draft, Kalil’s status as the third player off the board doesn’t appear to be a sure thing. There’s increasing talk around the NFL that Kalil, the USC left tackle who is universally regarded as the top offensive lineman in the draft, will still be available after the Vikings make their pick. And with that in mind, the Browns, who pick fourth, are sending a contingent to conduct a private workout with Kalil.Nearly every projection has had the Browns picking among Alabama running back Trent Richardson, LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne or Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon, with Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill a possible wild card. But if Kalil gets past the Vikings, he’s someone the Browns would have to consider — even though left tackle is not a need for the Browns, who have Joe Thomas at the position. So if the Vikings pass on Kalil, who would they take? ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Vikings like the idea of acquiring Blackmon as a weapon for quarterback Christian Ponder, and they also like the idea of acquiring Claiborne with the knowledge that they’re going to need a cornerback who can cover Detroit’s Calvin Johnson, Green Bay’s Greg Jennings and Chicago’s Brandon Marshall twice a season each.Or maybe the Vikings really have already settled on Kalil, and everything else is just smoke. At this point in the draft process, there’s more smoke than fire.

They'd be settling for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, ??? place at the LT position if they do.And for the type of defense they're running, I can't understand why they'd be looking for an elite CB.It has got to be smokescreen.Would selecting Claiborne really be that bad of a move? Yeah, no doubt. You have the largest and poorest Native American tribe in the state saying "We'll pay for the state's portion of the bill if you let us do what every other tribe in the state is doing, plus we'll give you more money on top of that." How is that not an instant yes? Keep the Vikings and taxpayers don't pay a dime? This should be option #1 IMO.The tribe casino is so amazing to me.. I agree. A huge water-skiing, bass fishing lake would be awesome. Kalil fills a huge need and looks like a great player, but you can't go wrong taking a CB who is considered better than the rookie CB who was All-Pro last year.'Donnybrook said:Most people expect them to draft Kalil but I won't be schocked if they draft Claiborne. You two have no idea what you are talking about. Minnesota is a great state and a large part of that is because of it's reputation as being super cold all the time. Keeps the rifraf out.I agree. Plus, then all the Minnesotans could move to Wisconsin and maybe that state would suck less.minnesota would be an ok state if you got rid of all of the minnesotanites and then dug it out into an awesome lake where you could do stuff like water ski and go bass fishin take that to the bank brohans
http://www.startribune.com/politics/statelocal/148107605.htmlWith top NFL officials arriving, Vikings stadium bill inches forward National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell's arrival Friday at the state Capitol to personally lobby for a new Minnesota Vikings stadium may already be creating some political movement. Gov. Mark Dayton said Thursday morning the NFL commissioner would meet with Republican and DFL leaders Friday, and that Art Rooney II, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the chair of the league’s stadium committee, would also be attending. “They didn’t issue any threats or anything, but it was more of a warning” that the Vikings might leave Minnesota, Dayton told reporters outside his state Capitol office. “It was very clear that they see that the Vikings will be in play [to move] if this is not resolved or unfavorably resolved in this session.” With the Republican-led Legislature moving quickly toward adjournment for the spring, Goodell’s arrival was the latest sign that the NFL was putting high-stakes pressure on lawmakers to resurrect the Viking stadium legislation in the coming days. In a slight sign of movement, Senate Majority Leader David Senjem said after Dayton’s comments Thursday that a Senate panel where the nearly $1 billion Vikings stadium plan has been stalled for weeks would now likely meet Friday to reconsider the legislation. Senjem’s comments came after Senate Minority Leader Tom Bakk, the lead DFLer in the Senate, said DFLers on the 14-member panel would agree to put up the majority of the votes needed to pass the Vikings plan in the committee. “The mere fact that they’re here, I suspect, elevates this whole issue,” Senjem said of Goodell’s visit. “I think the Vikings are probably going to be around for another year or so,” he added however. “But I don’t think we can forget about St. Louis, Baltimore, Los Angeles [and] Oakland” where NFL teams have left. “They experienced this. It can happen. It’s real.” Some DFLers who are opposed to the public subsidy package for the Vikings stadium looked skeptically at what was occurring. "The NFL's ramping up the rhetoric because they're not getting the bill passed that they want," said Rep. Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley, who voted against the stadium plan Monday in a House committee. "It's like any other negotiation. You have to assess when somebody's bluffing, and when they're telling the truth," he said. "We've got to balance the threats they make, with the bad deal that this stadium bill is." Rep. Ann Lenczewski, DFL-Bloomington, another opponent of public subsidy packages for stadiums, said she wanted to know whether Goodell was coming to Minnesota because Dayton called him as part of an orchestrated stadium lobbying effort, or because Goodell decided on his own the situation was serious enough for him to come. "I just want to know who called who," she said. "I honestly want to know that. Is it real? Is it rhetoric? I don't know." So far however the Legislature has shown little overall willingness to resolve their its over a plan that would have the Vikings contribute $427 million toward building a new stadium, have the state add $398 million and have Minneapolis contribute $150 million. The plan for the nearly $1 billion stadium, which would be built in downtown Minneapolis, remained mired in uncertainty following a jolting defeat Monday before a House panel. Republican majority leaders in both the House and Senate meanwhile have talked of adjourning by the end of the month, at the latest. Dayton stressed Thursday that Goodell and Rooney had not issued any threats, and that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf likewise had not said that the team would move should a stadium deal not be reached this year. “It’s a matter of fact statement” that the team might move, the governor said. “[but] it’s not like, ‘Well, if you don’t do this, we’ll do that.’ It was ‘This is the way our league operates,’ “ Dayton said.

I would say the Vikings need to take the player that they think is the best on the board, but they seem to have them rated equal.'Donnybrook said:I guess I will not question Adam Schefter in the future. The official Viking line is that they haven't made a decision between their top 3 of Kalil, Blackmon and Claiborne. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/04/19/vikings-choosing-between-blackmon-claiborne-and-kalil-with-third-pick/
So, what's the O/U on Spielman being on the street? Two years? If they select anyone other than Kalil at the 3 spot, it should be Friday morningI would say the Vikings need to take the player that they think is the best on the board, but they seem to have them rated equal.'Donnybrook said:I guess I will not question Adam Schefter in the future. I am actually liking this Monty Haul pick the 3 doors shtick. I doubt any team will give us what I think it should take for us to draft anyone but Kalil. But maybe some fish are biting. Maybe there is already an offer made that would cause us to move the pick. I don't know who is going to win this game of chicken between the Vikings and the Browns if we trade down with the Bucs. I suppose it is possible Kalil could be there at pick 5.I would say the Vikings need to take the player that they think is the best on the board, but they seem to have them rated equal.'Donnybrook said:I guess I will not question Adam Schefter in the future. And he won't draft Kalil because he is a moron who thinks he has to prove how much smarter he is than the rest of the NFL.skol turning minnesota into a giant lake and sending the people there to live on mars everyone knows that it isnot the size of the bass you are catchin but rather just getting out there and fishin for them with a power bait of some type or a shad rap and rocketing across the lake at close to 90 in a double motor rig souped up 4 cycle speed bass boat around here we call me the bassin assasin so i know what im talking about take that to the trout pond at yuor local sports show thats about the only place a guy from minny will catch anything and then it will be a liver tasting stocked fish good job we can call you the bluegill kid so from the bassin assain to the bluegill kid go tell your grandmomma she is a brohanTypical drunken sconie. Well played sir. This brings up a good topic though. Since the whole mood surrounding the Vikings stadium issue is depressing, who is heading out for opener and where?I'll be on Leech, likely Sand Point/Grandvu flats, pounding fatty 'eyes.I hope to be on Stoney Pointskol turning minnesota into a giant lake and sending the people there to live on mars everyone knows that it isnot the size of the bass you are catchin but rather just getting out there and fishin for them with a power bait of some type or a shad rap and rocketing across the lake at close to 90 in a double motor rig souped up 4 cycle speed bass boat around here we call me the bassin assasin so i know what im talking about take that to the trout pond at yuor local sports show thats about the only place a guy from minny will catch anything and then it will be a liver tasting stocked fish good job we can call you the bluegill kid so from the bassin assain to the bluegill kid go tell your grandmomma she is a brohanTypical drunken sconie. BTW- This may be FFA topical but the Vikes stadium situation set in stone my 2012 voting plan to vote against each and every incumbant. From the budget BS in 2011 to ongoing political shenanigans in recent days, this legislature is utterly worthless. They are there to do a job, and tying back to the Vikes situation that job is to vote on behalf of their constituents either for or against the stadium bill; not to stall something out in an orchestrated committee vote that spares other legislators from being on the record either way in an election year. It's embarrassing. If a legislator feels his/her constituents do not support a stadium, then vote no and deal with the political consequences from the opposition. That's your job.Bravo sir!!! I wish I could help you in that cause.BTW- This may be FFA topical but the Vikes stadium situation set in stone my 2012 voting plan to vote against each and every incumbant. Even if they would have voted in favor of a stadium?BTW- This may be FFA topical but the Vikes stadium situation set in stone my 2012 voting plan to vote against each and every incumbant. Had the legislature voted for or against a stadium bill, obviously those would be polar opposite facts. In that scenario, my opinion of the legislature would change because it would show they are doing their job - agree or disagree with the outcome. Then one could decide whether individual legislators voted your voice, but it would not be an indictment on the legislature as a whole. I don't believe for a second they will put this up for a vote. At present, my impression is this legislature as a whole is hell bent on rhetorical games to safeguard political careers. And again it's not just the stadium topic, this Legislature acted appallingly during the budget fiasco last year.Even if they would have voted in favor of a stadium?BTW- This may be FFA topical but the Vikes stadium situation set in stone my 2012 voting plan to vote against each and every incumbant.
