Vikings Release 15 To Reach 75-Man Roster LimitPosted by Mike Wobschall on August 25, 2012 – 2:05 pm NFL teams are required to reduce their rosters to the 75-man limit by Monday, and the Vikings released 15 players on Saturday to comply with the rule. The following players were released by the Vikings:G Bridger BucheRB Derrick ColemanG Grant CookLB Solomon ElimimianDB Corey GatewoodOT Levi HornDT Anthony JacobsWR Kamar JordenWR AJ LoveLB Tyler NielsenDE Ernest OwusuDT Tydreke PowellDB Chris StroudWR Kerry TaylorWR Bryan Walters
http://blog.vikings.com/2012/08/25/vikings-release-15-to-reach-75-man-roster-limit/Most of these names are unfamiliar to me with the exception of Elimimian who I thought might compete for the nickle LB spot and special teams. I take this to mean that the Vikings are comfortable enough with Jasper Brinkley to play run downs and either Erin Henderson or Audie Cole will play in the nickle with Greenway. So if those 4 remain healthy we may be alright at LB. I still thought Elimimian might make it as the 5th guy to backup Henderson/Nickle LB. So this was a bit surprising to me.

I wouldn't expect Cole to see the field outside of special teams.

This is why Sports Illustrated is ridiculous:

Minnesota: Did the Vikings do enough to shore up one of the worst pass defenses in history?

Donovan McNabb and Christian Ponder were put in what was, almost quite literally, a no-win situation last year: forced to compete despite being paired with the NFL's worst pass defense.

The Vikings surrendered a 107.8 Defensive Passer Rating in 2011. It was both the worst mark in football and in franchise history. Put another way, the Vikings made every quarterback look like Tom Brady or Drew Brees at the peak of their powers.

That's no way to win a football game. In fact, only one team in history posted a Defensive Passer Rating worse than the 2011 Vikings: the 0-16 Lions of 2008 (110.9).

The Vikings should have been all-in on improving the defense in the 2012 draft. Instead, they devoted four of the top six picks to offensive players, grabbing defenders only with late first- and early second-round picks.
They drafted Smith in the 1st, Robinson in the 3rd, Blanton in the 5th, and Cole and Guyton in the 7th. What a lousy magazine. And did he not notice how bad the offense was last year?
 They still look highly suspect in pass defense. SD was missing so many pieces and still did some work. God we looked horrible everywhere except for Gerhart and the D-Line.

I normally wouldn't either but I am not sold on Erin Henderson holding that job long term either. If we were I think we would have given him more than a 1 year show me contract. Would be happy to be wrong here but I am glad Cole has looked capable of playing nickle LB with Greenway if Henderson fails.

Patriots claimed former Viking WR Kerry Taylor. IIRC, Taylor flashed a bit in the second pre-season game. However, it seems like a tall order for him to learn the Patriots offense and pass a few players on their depth chart with only a single pre-season game left. I guess stranger things have happened.

Any word of cuts today guys? Also have you seen anyone that has been released that you would "kick the tires" on? Dale Moss for developmental purposes? Amobi Okoye?

I would definitely like to see the Vikes sign Marvin Mcnutt. I am a big fan of him and was hoping they would snag him in the 4th or 5th round. Real suprised he didnt make the Eagles roster.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said on Wednesday he had given the coaching staff eight different roster scenarios, but injuries in the final preseason game and waived players from other teams impacted the final decision.The Vikings debated their cuts well into Friday afternoon as they got news of players being released.Notable Cuts: RB Lex Hilliard (4th year, Montana) Hilliard was considered the leader for the 3rd running back spotearly in camp, but was passed by FB Matt Asiata, who moved to tailback and had a great preseason. WR Emmanuel Arceneaux (2nd year, 2011 Alcorn State) In a position battle that lasted throughout camp, Arceneaux is the odd man out, as he had a good preseason but received fewest reps in the final game. A member of the team's practice squad last season, the Vikings will have interest in getting him through waivers. DE Jeff Charleston (6th year, Idaho State) The first name on the list is DE Jeff Charleston, a 5-year veteran from Idaho State, according to 1500ESPN. Charleston injured his ankle during training camp and lost a little time, but he was along shot at best on team that is deep at the defensive end position. FB Ryan D'Imperio (2nd year, Rutgers). D'Imperio made the team last season, but the addition of FB Jerome Felton and the addition of versatile TE/HB Rhett Ellison made him expendable. Trevor Guyton (R, 7th round in 2012, California) Guyton's stock rose when DT Letroy Guion was injured, but he never did enough in camp to stand out. The Vikings may try to get him through waivers and put him on the practice squad. OL Chris DeGeare (2nd year, Wake Forest) It looked like DeGeare had a chance to stick when it was reported that OL DeMarcus Love would need surgery on his pectoral muscle, but the Vikings may try to side him through waivers.Cut listDE Jeff Charleston (6th year, Idaho State); FB Ryan D'Imperio (2nd year, 7th round in 2010 draft, Rutgers); DT Trevor Guyton (R, 7th round in 2012, California; DE Nick Reed (3rd year, Oregon), OL Chris DeGeare (2nd year, Wake Forest); WR Emmanuel Arceneaux (2nd year, 2011 Alcorn State); WR Emmanuel Arceneaux (2nd year, Alcorn State); RB Lex Hilliard (4th year, Montana);
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/nfl-rapidreports/19997265/vikings-cuts-de-jeff-charelston-first-player-let-goI do like Guyton but the defensive line is pretty deep right now.

More from Pelissero: Vikings have waived Jordan Todman. Matt Asiata in?
I thought Todman may have earned a roster spot because of his recent great performance. Todman has been getting positive comments throughout training camp.Asiata has likely shown more at this point but both look like promising players. I wonder if Todman will make it to the practice squad or if some other team pick him up. He seems like a good player.I do think this shows confidence in Petersons ability to take enough snaps that they do not feel the need for a 4th Rb. We do have Percy Harvin as well so in that sense it is like having 4 rb. Felton is more of a FB/HB type of player. Asiata showed enough to expect him to get some carries along the way. 20-40 over the season unless AD or Gerhardt miss significant time. I still think Harvin may see more rushing attempts as COP than Asiata will. Some older stuff about some of the bubble players I just got around to:
Last Was Not Least: 7 Vikings Who Impressed During Preseason FinalePosted by Mike Wobschall on August 31, 2012 – 6:17 am The fourth and final preseason game of 2012 is in the books, as the Vikings closed out their exhibition schedule with a tight and high-scoring 28-24 loss to the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium on Thursday night. With the preseason in the rear view mirror, fans will now set their attention on Week 1 of the regular season. But not so fast. Before NFL teams can set their sights on their Week 1 opponent, an important preseason process must first be completed – the 53-man roster cutdown. Currently, the Vikings roster stands at 75 players, but NFL teams are required to arrive at the 53-man limit by Friday evening. As Vikings GM Rick Spielman and Head Coach Leslie Frazier, along with their staffs, go through discussions to try and configure the right mix of players, they will consider the entire body of work a player has put together from the beginning of the offseason program in the middle April through Organized Team Activities (OTAs), minicamps, training camp and the preseason. At the same time, there’s no denying that the fourth and final preseason game has significant bearing on those decisions. So, how did the Vikings preseason finale impact decisions Spielman, Frazier and Co. will make? Let’s take a look at seven players who helped their chances of making the 53-man roster thanks to a strong final performance in the exhibition season.(The opinions expressed below are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of GM Rick Spielman, Head Coach Leslie Frazier or the Vikings organization.)RB Matt AsiataBased largely on a solid performance last week combined with a good training camp, Asiata came into Thursday’s preseason finale with a legitimate shot to make the final roster. He’s listed as and is built like a FB, but Asiata has some RB skills – nimble feet, good agility, good hands and good vision. Against the Texans, Asiata registered a 6.1 yards-per-carry average on 7 attempts. For the preseason, Asiata has 23 carries for 134 yards and 3 receptions for 15 yards with 1 TD. Is it enough to make the 53-man roster? Hard to tell, but Asiata is certainly a player who helped himself in the final preseason contest.QB McLeod Bethel-ThompsonIt’s easy to get excited about the potential of MBT. He has a big arm, looks the part, and is a good guy to have around the facility. On top of that, he’s had a good training camp and preseason. MBT has not looked overwhelmed, and in fact he led the Vikings on a drive late in Thursday’s game that resulted in him throwing into the end zone to try and steal a victory. It wasn’t to be, but MBT showed some late-game poise during the drive, and that’s fun to see from a youngster. For the preseason, MBT’s numbers look like this: 18 of 36 for 242 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs.CB Brandon BurtonThe return of Chris Cook and Antoine Winfield after they missed 21 games combined last year along with the presence of 3rd-round pick Josh Robinson has garnered much of the attention placed on the Vikings CBs. That has allowed Burton to quietly go about his business and have a pretty good camp. He’s backed up that pretty good camp with a solid preseason as well. On Thursday night, Burton collected 3 tackles on defense and another on special teams; he took another step forward in his development. Burton has been more willing to mix it up this year during training camp, and that along with a couple of solid preseason outings might be enough to earn him a spot on the team.LB Audie ColePerhaps the highlight of the entire preseason was Cole’s performance against the Buffalo Bills, when he intercepted consecutive passes from Tyler Thigpen and Brad Smith and returned both for TDs. But Cole was solid before that performance and he’s been solid since that performance as well. Cole began his night on Thursday with a pair of special teams tackles, and followed it up with a good performance on defense in the 2nd half. Cole was tied for second on the team with 6 tackles and defense and he led the Vikings with 2 special teams tackles as well. Frazier mentioned Cole during his post-game press conference as a guy the team could look at for depth should Marvin Mitchell be held out of Week 1 action after spraining his ankle against the Texans.C Quentin SaulsberryThe Vikings offense was on the field for 83 snaps on Thursday night, and in that time they racked up 562 yards of offense. The man in the middle of the offensive line for most of that time was not John Sullivan or even backup Joe Berger; it was Saulsberry, an undrafted rookie free agent who has quietly hung around during the offseason program and training camp. With Sullivan in place as the starter and Berger a quality backup, it might be ambitious to speculate Saulsberry being an option for the 53-man roster. But perhaps the Vikings think enough of Saulsberry to keep him around for practice squad consideration. His performance on Thursday night in helping the Vikings amass a large net yardage total certainly helped.RB Jordan TodmanMost will point to his 76-yard TD run as evidence that Todman deserves consideration for the 53-man roster. It’s true that the long TD jaunt helped Todman, but the speedster also helped his cause in other ways. One play that stands out to me came in the Vikings final offensive drive when he caught a screen pass, but had little room to run. Rather than trying to squeeze out every last yard, Todman wisely decided to run horizontally to get out of bounds and stop the clock. For the game, Todman finished with 114 rushing yards and 1 TD on just 10 carries and he added 5 receptions for 21 yards as well.An ankle injury limited Todman for most of training camp and the preseason, so the Vikings have a limited sample size with which to judge him. That might ultimately cause the team to go another direction, but what makes the decision even more difficult is Todman’s outstanding performance on Thursday evening.WR Jarius WrightAs a 4th-round pick, Wright was likely a lock to make the roster anyway. But after Thursday night, it’s clear the rookie receiver made the roster based on his on-field performance rather than his draft stock. Before leaving the game with a sprained ankle, Wright caught 6 balls for 122 yards, including a 59-yard TD in the 3rd quarter. Wright showed some explosion and some toughness.
http://blog.vikings.com/2012/08/31/last-was-not-least-7-vikings-who-impressed-during-preseason-finale/FWIW I think Mike Wobschall is a genuine dork, but he is pretty tuned in with what has been going on with the team. I have been enjoying his articles a lot this pre-season.

I thought Carr had a roster spot locked up so I am surprised he got cut. I am hoping we pick Mcnutt, Dale Moss, or Anthony Armstrong off of waivers.

It going to be interesting to see who gets cut to make room for Jefferson. For the record, I have never been high on Brandon Burton.

Jordan Todman has cleared waivers and will be back on the Vikings practice squad.
I am happy we got him back. Good guy to be able to call up to the roster if any of our Rbs get injured over the season. The Rbs we kept are more power runners and we needed to keep blockers to replace Sauce and also because Carlson hasn't been healthy, although he is supposedly ready to go week 1. So Felton and Rhett Ellison while Asiata is a converted FB as well making the roster over Todman. I wonder if Quentin Saulsberry can play guard if needed? I have not seen his name on the cut lists but the Vikings are still making moves at offensive line.
Cardinals trade CB Jefferson to Vikings for undisclosed picks Text Size PrintE-mailReprintsBy Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, September 1, 4:18 PMMINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings acquired cornerback A.J. Jefferson from the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday for a conditional draft pick in 2013.In bringing in the 24-year-old Jefferson, the Vikings continued their approach of adding youthful depth to a rebuilding roster. Cornerback was an area of concern for the coaching staff with Antoine Winfield entering his 14th season and missed the final 10 games of last season due to injury while Chris Cook has struggled with injuries and off-the-field issues in his first two years in Minnesota.Jefferson was the odd man out in a crowd at cornerback for Arizona. Signed as an undrafted rookie out of Fresno State in 2010, he played in all 16 games last season, the first seven as a starter. He had 67 tackles, 59 solo, with one interception. The Vikings also claimed offensive lineman Mark Asper off waivers from the Bills and waived offensive lineman Pat Brown and cornerback Zack Bowman. Brown played his first three seasons with the Vikings, seeing limited action in 2011. Bowman was brought in to compete for playing time but was underwhelming during the preseason. The Vikings also signed four players to their practice squad on Saturday — running back Jordan Todman, offensive lineman Tyler Holmes, defensive lineman Chase Baker and defensive back Bobby Felder.

I would like to have someone more reliable at pass protection from the RT position who could spell Loadholt. I was hoping that is what Schwartz could possibly do playing as RG/RT in rotation, but he has been pretty quiet all preseason. Berger is ok and can play all 3 inside line positions, I would still like to see someone to push Charlie Johnson and the depth so we could have Kalil lineup at TE in 1st down formations sometimes.

I really like the philosophy of going young and "starting over" but still think moving Jared Allen for draft picks would have been the way to go...maybe they will move him before the season is over but I don't think his stock would ever be higher than this past offseason.

The Vikings burned multiple 1st round draft picks trying to get a elite DE and none of them panning out. Right now we are in a good position with quality depth in Griffin behind Allen. I do not think trading Jared Allen would be a wise move even if we could get more than a 1st round pick back in return. It would hurt the chemistry of the team. Allen is a great leader as well as elite performer. While I agree that his trade value in the NFL is at a peak (or perhaps was when we traded 1st round picks for him to KC)I doubt the return is more valuable than what Allen does for the Vikings team and fan base.
