So what happens if a client refuses to pay Darin his perfectly reasonable FIFTY PERCENT COMMISSION?

Is he gonna send some goons to collect? :lmao: I love how the sucker-of-the-week walked in all nervous and shaking.

Pretty sure skipper could be bought off, or at least delayed, with a corned beef sandwich.

ETA: He forgave pretty much most of the balance for the guy just showing up with a pulse and a peace offering of the "debt." Leads me to believe collect-ability is an issue at VIP Sports.

Their explanations for taking a game are so stupid. "Western KY is going on the road and they absolutely destroy Sun Belt teams on the road." "We have one good running team in Navy and one good passing team in San Jose St. that spells one thing: The Over!"

Love this show. It is a freakin' train wreck.

What is the story behind this scam. Is it the classic, tell half the guys to be on one team and tell the other half to bet on the other side?

I absolutely love the show, I just can't believe it. Has this guy ever picked an underdog in his life? I mean, it's obvious why he does what he does, but it's just so transparent.
Seriously have not seen him pick a dog in 8 episodes.

It's easier to sell the favorite as an ABSOLUTE BLOW.....OUT WINNER!, after all.
Easier to explain away a loss as a "fluke" if a favorite loses too. He convinces someone to get on the Browns +8 and they lose 33-0 and that's tougher to rationalize.
So Dentist is on this show?

So you went 3-1 this weekend & broke even after my standard 50%. Good weekend.
It seems that they take 50% or whatever percentage of every win, regardless of the losses, right?

For example, three bets of a grand each at even money for simple math sake.

First best, lose $1,000.

Second best, lose $1,000

Third bet, win $1,000 (-$500 commission) = $500 profit.

Net winnings = -$1500?

I'm convinced the money they are actualy making is from the sale of the TV show and now the $250 a week fees they are getting people to sign up for. Nobody is giving that clown 50%.

Riiiight? How could you possibly make money when you are paying 50% on every bet you win and absorbing 100% of your losses.

The other aspect is paying the commission. Let's assume that you do like their pick and are happy with the win percentage. Why wouldn't you just bet the minimum with them, say $500 a play and then go off and bet larger size with someone else without them even knowing?

So this guy comes to Vegas, real high roller. Anyways we're down 100 large after losing 5 straight, so I say to hell with money management, I win 70% of the time! I'm due! So we up the bet to 50 a game, and we lose another 3 in a row. He's got one more game til he has to leave, so we put 100k down on North Dakota State Bison, and boom we hit on a last second field goal to win! Instead of going home down a quarter mill, he leaves down $150, less my standard 50%, so he goes home down $200k.

Pretty much.

And nobody hits 67-70%, or whatever he's claiming, on football sides. Impossible over the short run. 60% is legendary, but I'm fairly certain that Captain Square Angle is hitting right around 50% overall.

It's a brilliant business model, really. They sell something that is limitless and doesn't cost anything, all they need is a supply of rubes. Getting on and getting free advertising from what's essentially an infomercial is even better. Doesn't matter if 99 out of 100 of us watch it and understand it's a scam.

On the one hand, I'm offended that CNBC is making him rich. On the other hand, I get enjoyment out of the show, so I shouldn't begrudge him getting paid. That would be like getting mad that the people on Top Chef are getting paid.

As for the scam itself, hard to feel sorry for anyone stupid enough to pay him.

Yeah, if I'm playing to win 50 dimes, I'm not paying 5 dimes in juice alone to push on 1 point...in college football.

Steve, frustrated that his heavy hitter is only in town for one day: "You KNOW I preach money-management!"

:lmao:

Episode 1: $15,000 bet loses. No problem, bet $30,000 on the next game. That also loses. No problem, bet $60,000 on the next game.

Gotta like the VIP Classic!! Start with $5k and winner goes home with $1800
When I first started watching the episode and they announced the VIP Classic, I was like..wait, why don't they just mark their bets and amounts on paper without actually betting, skip the casino and that way the winner has $5,000.

Probably would have made for a ####ty episode though.

I'm going to miss this show, but I guess I'll just have to imagine these guys are still out there, ripping people off and pissing away huge sums of money while acting like complete jerkoffs.

They're on facebook.
That was a joke, kind of like when Cheers ended and people were saying they were happy they could imagine those characters continuing to sit around drinking beer and discussing trivial matters.

In addition to Steve's 50%, don't forget about the IRS's cut. He had one guy playing $60K on a game. Anything over $10K and you're filling out paperwork. Even when you win a bet with ol' Steve, you barely get to keep any of it.

Were this real, they'd be spreading out the action in multiple joints.

I actually thought about that during the last episode... If someone really was dumb enough to give this guy 50%, I wondered if they would only report half of their winnings.

"For the record" it's not 50% of each win, its of winnings. Below is from another board......

SBRforum, some guy paid 2500, and they are just fading the guy.
he went like 3-15 over one stretch,

if he bet what Steven's told him to, he would be down like 190k,
and now stevens wants him to get 100k down on one game.

T-bone123
For the record he doesnt charge me 50% of every win. It's over all profit. I paid him $2500 up front to show i was a real player and haven't paid since but he's been trying to suck me into giving him more money. I don't know how long it will last before i have to pay to keep receiving picks but in the mean time im going to ride this fade until the wheels fall off.

He'll try to have me going 100k a game lol. This guy is an absolute animal with no concept of money management. If i totaled it up i would be down around 190k with this character.

http://forum.sbrforum.com/service-pl...e-stevens.html

The guy is obviously a sociopath.
I couldn't sleep w/ a job, in sales, where I knew every deal will end badly.

The one question/comment I'm sick of seeing , is the 50 % com when they are losing.

Like if a guy
loses 1100, then loses another 1100, so -2200,
wins the 3rd bet, so -1200 overall and people asking if they have to pay 50 % comm on that 1000.
I mean come on, who would be that stupid.

RN knows this book, but if anyone's interested in reading up on a real guy who beats sports betting huge, The Smart Money by Michael Konik is a good read. It's about his time being a runner for Billy Walters, who would usually employ guys to get down bets for him, and they'd take a cut in return. Ashton Kutcher's done it too for a bit, I think.

If there was a book I enjoyed reading more than this one, I can't recall it.

Same here - thanks! I am not a big gambler but like to dabble a bit.

I don't get people on this show betting big on games and then not even watching them. getting updates on your phones isn't quite the same.

If I was the "Bookie Killer" I could see not wanting to watch it. That has to be stressful.

As a bettor, I don't think I could bet $50,000 and then head off to get a pedicure.
