FLA had 9 offensive players play more than 13.5 minutes. EDM had only four do that.
Yup - that depth was their mantra all playoffs long. One guy who really went under the radar this postseason, who should have gotten serious Conn Smythe consideration, is D-man Gustav Forsling.

Wow. First losing player since Jiggy to win conn smythe
Grrrr. That one definitely deserved the home-crowd boos.
If you are talking about Giguere there, he was given a very nice ovation . I was there. No one came close to him that playoff season. Hell, he held the Brasky's to one goal in four games.
There was booing, too. Nobody came close until the Finals happened. I mean, the argument I usually hear is that "it's for the whole playoffs and not just the Finals," but then the arguer usually discounts the Finals part of the playoffs. The stats for the entire playoffs weren't all that one-sided, and I think it's reasonable to give extra credit to the Finals performance. You know, where the winning goalie had 3 of his playoff record 7 shutouts (plus one more before overtime). And there's obviously (usually) extra credit to the winning team's players. Yeah, there's the most valuable vs best player argument, but if it was just about that, you'd have losing team players win more often.

Anyway, this has been beaten to death over the years. You just had to bring it up.

McDavid winds the Spirit Award given after every tournament to the best player that didn't win. That's nice.
If they are going to discount Bob because he lost three games in the finals, then McWhiney did the skater equivalent with getting shutout in games 6 and 7. Two off games including the all or nothing game and his team lost. No way he should win the MVP.

It’s the playoff mvp not just the MVP of game 6 and 7 of the final. McDavid was very very clearly the best player in the playoffs, nobody else was even close. Can’t believe anybody disagrees with that.
I get that. The point I was making was if you are docking Bob because he lost three games in the finals then you need to dock McWhiney for zero pointing in the last two games of the finals. Something also has to be said for how he got his points in blowouts when he was piling on and not when it was needed.

I agree he is a great player and played well but winning is the goal and he didn't do that. I though Bob was good enough to get the CS as he was great in the 4 games they won in the finals as well as really good the rest of the playoffs. He was the reason why the Panthers won the Cup.

Bob was nowhere near as impactful as McDavid. Calling him McWhiney just shows you have a bias in this conversation.

He is a great player. No doubt about that. He does whine a lot. No doubt about that. For me, I think the MVP should be on the winning team. Bob was good enough to not give it to a guy on the losing team.......especially when he didn't step up in game 7 with everything on the line.

I tend to agree, but Bob benefited hugely from the Panther's D throughout the season and the playoffs. Not saying Bob's not a great G, he is, but that D was next level, and likely impacted the voting. When the D feel apart Bob got killed.

I've said this a million times - it's dumb that the award is Most Valuable Player. The "value" thing is difficult to quantify.

Call it "Best Player", which is really the intent anyway. And for this playoffs it was clearly McDavid.

Tell me you are biased against McDavid without telling me you're biased against McDavid. Lol.
McWhiney? Give me one example of him whining in the SCF.
Only got his points in blowouts? Try watching the games next time before you comment.

Goalie Bob wasn't even the best choice for MVP for the Panthers. It was Barkov. He did more throughout the playoffs to suppress offense from the opposing team than Bob did. Bob ended the playoffs with a .906 save percentage. That's MVP worthy now???

An image I found funny last night was Barkov taking the trophy from Bettman.

It was like watching a grown up take a sippy cup from a toddler.

While I don't like McDavid, I do think he is the best player in the NHL. He is a heart attack for the opposing team every time he has the puck. Just an amazing talent for sure. While he may not have done much whining in the SCF he does whine a lot historically. I do think he gets the benefit of the doubt on many calls by the officials and that he is officiated differently.

I also think he got the CS because he is McDavid and the NHL wants to promote him as they should. He had an MVP worthy playoff performance for sure and if his team won it's easily his. Fundamentally I don't believe a guy on the losing team deserves the MVP. They didn't win the Cup. Tack onto that McDavid coming up short with no points in game 7 is a big dent in his MVP armor. I know it's an award for the entire playoffs but you still need to come up big in the biggest game of the year. He did not.

While the Panthers were much more team dependent rolling 4 lines and playing smothering D in front of Bob he was solid the entire playoffs and was a huge reason the Panthers were up 3-0 to start the Finals. I could point to a ton of posts in this thread that said the Oilers completely outplayed Florida in the first few games and the only reason they were up 3-0 was because of Bob. So I am not alone in that viewpoint. That kind of performance matters to me. The fact the Panthers won matters to me.

So while McDavid played well enough to deserve consideration for the MVP, his team didn't win and that matters more to me. Couple that with the Bob performance to put the Panthers up 3-0 when his team was outplayed and I have to give it to him. Winning just matters more to me.

the vote happens during the middle of the 3rd period. Just sayin'

Forsling and Barkov couldn’t have won the Smythe due to lack of points, but can’t argue with them being right there in the mix.

So a surreal experience for me after game 7. I happen to have a couple of players who are clients of mine and unexpectedly. They invited me down to the locker room to celebrate with them. I sent some pictures to @Gally so he can verify what I’m telling you here.

It was truly surreal to be able to feel part of this first ever franchise Stanley Cup and to be able to hoist the cup over my head with a big stogie in my mouth. I’m gonna blow up that picture to a poster size and frame it.

Hockey players are the best athletes in the world, humble and tight like family. They truly deserve this cup. The culture in that locker room was unbelievable and all the families were there to celebrate and it was just such a great time. I didn’t get home till four in the morning, I think the last time I stayed out till 4 AM was 11 years ago.

Anyway I am so happy for the guys and their families…..and I felt humbled I was able to share in that celebration in the locker room and have the honor to hold up the cup.

I wish I knew how to post a picture here, but I am technically challenged lol.

I am so happy for you. It's such a great feeling and experience when your team finally wins after so many years. It is definitely surreal. Pictures were great and a memory you will never forget.

I had no idea since i don't live in Tampa any more, I never got to be in the city for any of the Stanley Cups
-I could not believe I was able to just drive over to the Elbow Room on the beach and get as close as I did to the Stanley Cup

Here is the weirdest thing I can describe to those who do not live down here in South Florida. Sunrise, the immediate surrounding area which runs East to the beach and Ft Lauderdale also runs North thru much of the Palm Beaches...but Miami/Dade? They don't seem all that excited about this, honestly. This is a very Broward County thing like I haven't seen down here.
-I also did not realize that it's a summer long party and if you really want to go see the Cup in person, it's not that difficult to get in the room wherever it's going. That trophy literally is to be shared with the fans and they were pouring beer out of it from the 2nd floor of the Elbow Room...I wasn't quite that brave to drink from it but it was fun watching others

I was at the 1st ever game at Expo Park in Tampa '92 vs what was then the Minnesota North Stars, went thru the Playoffs in ST PETE during the 90s
But to be in the actual region/area of the Stanley Cup, to see it in person, it's unbelievable.

You and I did not grow up on hockey and I moved from South FL to Tampa in '92 to attend USF, both regions were given hockey teams around the same time. I was in Tampa when the Lightning first started, it was fun watching them win multiple titles over the last many years.

Panthers are set up for multiple years, several contracts are to the Panthers favor and Bob will be on the last year of his deal. 3 of the next 5 years the Panthers should be contending?
I'm interested to see what the Lightning do next, the Panthers pretty much ran a carbon copy of them and smothered opposing teams with their defense.

5 Finals appearances in a row for the state of Florida and 3 Stanley Cups, hockey has been a major overall success in Florida.
Panthers need to capitalize and grow the brand, they should sell out for season tickets next year, all 41 games
Corporate sponsorship should be thru the roof, all that means more money to throw around to keep the team near the top
This won't be like the Marlins where the team gets broken up, their revenue should flourish moving forward.

wow... that is so cool. What an amazing experience.

I had a surreal moment before Game 7 of the ANA/NJ game 7. I ran a fantasy sports service for a long time, and had taken customers for a few years to Yankee games during the summer. In Jan 2003, I get Yankees group sales letter and sign up our group for NYY/STL game at Yankee Stadium, Sat 6/14.

When the Ducks forced game 7, I moved my trip up a day from Tuesday to Monday, and bought two seats in top row for $100 each on ebay for game 7.

We flew into the airport at 4pm. Cab ride through the tunnel was expected to take two hours due to rush hour traffic. Cabby was pissed, because it was a flat rate $64. He amazingly gets there in 65 minutes.

As I step out of the cab, there was just one person outside sitting on a bench two feet away from me. It was like he was there to greet me getting out of the cab.

It was JS Giguere. I had no idea the Ducks were staying at that hotel. And why were they at the hotel three hours before the game?

I have pics I can send Gally LOL.

Also met Keith Carney, S.Pahlsson and GM Bryan Murray getting on the bus. Partied with 25 other Ducks fans in the parking lot and Giguere's cousin. After the game in the hotel bar, partied with Steve Thomas' family. They had a zillion cool stories.

JS autographed my pic the next STH party and I have it and the game ticket framed.

Hockey players are the best. You won't come down from this for a long time.

Its amazing how many people you will meet during the Cup Finals.

I met Jeff Carter's dad in the beer garden outside Staples Center in 2012. My dad and I got a couple beers and headed out to the barrier of the beer gardens. This guy was alone so we started up a conversation. He said he was tired because he just flew in from Canada. That peaked my interest a bit. I made a comment about jeesh a long way to go for a game and he chuckled and said his kid was on the team. Of course, that prompted the natural question of who. He kind of looked over both shoulders to see if anyone was around and then bent in and said Jeff Carter. He said he was there with his wife and daughter but they wanted to go shopping and he just wanted a beer. We hung out for about a half hour and had a great time. Such a nice, down to earth guy. He talked about coaching a lot of NHL'rs and how happy Jeff was to get moved from Columbus and loved LA.

The next season I was walking the concourse between games and noticed he was in line for the personalized jersey booth. I went over to see if he remembered me from the beer gardens from the year before. He didn't recognize me but remembered after some prompting. I asked what the hell he was doing in line for personalized jersey and he said he promised to get one for a buddy back home and they didn't have any in the store so had to get one made....hahahaha. I said Jeff should hook him up and he said he didn't want to bother him.....hahaha. We planned to meet up at the next intermission and I bought him a beer. Great guy.

We also sat in front of Jarret Stoll's cousins during the 2012 finals. They were funny. They flew in just for the game (it was the possible clincher for the sweep that the Kings lost).

Dustin's Brown's wife and family sat in front of us for the clincher in 2014. About half way through the 3rd period some suits came by passing out wrist bands to her for access to the ice after the game. I asked for one but she just rolled her eyes and said no. Hahahah. Worth a shot. They ended up leaving shortly after that and never came back. The game went double OT before the Kings won so they were waiting quite a long time to get on the ice.

Hockey players are definitely the best.

Love these stories.

The next day, my customer and long time friend Don and I flew up to Buffalo to spend the day at Niagara Falls.

Getting off the plane, there was an older lady wearing a Ducks 10th anniversary logo T Shirt. I say hi, and start a conversation about the Game 7 loss. It was Adam Oates' mon. She was so cool, and so disappointed he didn't win the cup.

Love these stories.

Well, here are few more then.

When the Staples Center hosted the All Star game a few years ago there were a ton of the Top 100 Players out and about as they were celebrating them (might even have been when they were announced). Anyway, we were there for the weekend so after the skills competition we ended up heading over to the Yardhouse at LA live and the place was packed. In the bar area at one of the stand up tables was Tony Esposito and his wife. We ended up at the table next to them. My dad is a Blackhawks fan and had a jersey on. Tony said something about it and so we started talking to them. We ended up sitting with them for about 2 hours talking about old time hockey and various other stories about the league. His wife was busting balls the whole time cracking on his stories. It was awesome. He's sitting there in his Top 100 player Blazer and just talking away to a few dudes that he will never see again. Just the nicest guy possible. Just truly amazing experience.

Opening night probably in the early 2000's I was heading into the arena a bit early for the game. It just so happens I am walking next to Marty McSorley. I say hi and ask him how things are going and he just starts going into his hip and how it was hurting him so he couldn't even play pickup games so he just had it replaced and it's so much better to moving around and playing a bit. I asked him about the curved stick in the 93 Finals and he just went off on Montreal being a$$holes and that every stick on the ice was out of regs. It was that way the whole playoffs on every team and it was kind of an unwritten rule that it was fine and nothing would be called out. Then as that game was going on there was word trickling around that the Habs might ask for a stick check so some of the more skilled guys were changing sticks so they wouldn't be caught and that it was the furthest from anyone's mind they would go to his stick. He was so bitter about that it was a hilarious story to hear him talk about it. He ended up talking our ears off for about 40 minutes to the point we were late getting in for the drop of the puck. Hahahaha

He broke a record set by Gretzky that people thought was untouchable and led his team back from an 0-3 deficit to give us a 7-game epic series. Nuff said imo.
Agreed. Panther fan here (WOOHOO!) but if the Panthers had won in 4 or 5 it was Bob's Trophy. Once McDavid got hot in the run back to 3-3 it was a done deal. Still, he was shut out in 3/7 games vs the Panthers so the McOverrated stuff still clings. As someone who really doesn't watch a lot of Hockey anymore (It kind of fell off when the Panthers moved from Miami Arena to the swamps of Broward) McDavid is one of the fastest things I have ever seen on Skates.

As an extra question: If they had one other line that could do anything in these Finals Canada has the cup. When McDavid was off the ice it was time to relax a little.

Last night’s Stanley Cup Final Game 7 outdrew any NBA Finals or World Series game in the past five years.

While I agree that hockey is the best spectator sport there is.......... trying to compare a game 7 winner take all situation involving an entire country trying to win the Cup for the first time in 30 yrs to NBA and MLB where only one series went past 6 games combined for both sports (MLB in 2019) is a little apple to oranges.

So cool....

I worked PT for 4 or 5 seasons in two different stints at the Ice Palace were the Bolts played.

My job catering/banquet put me in close contact with the players, coaches, refs, mascots, team execs, and arena execs.
I had access to the press box, Lightning dinning room, Lightning locker room, visitor locker room, refs locker room. Even the Lightning Girls Locker room

Alas, they never even made the playoffs in the time I worked there. :kicksrock:

Another Kings trade:

Kings get picks 26, 57, and 198

Habs get pick 21

I have no idea if that is good or bad. Seems like a good deal for LA especially if there isn't someone they really want at 21.

Interesting timing on this deal...feels like an on-the-clock move when there is someone there you absolutely want.

Seems like a nice deal for the Kings given that, by most accounts, it’s not the strongest draft. Either 21 or 26 is probably a crapshoot.

Nice few days for them - new uniforms and now this deal.

"There will be no alternate uniform next season, the press release said, which also means the silver helmet, or "chrome dome," will not be part of the uniform."

Normalcy partially restored. Now if we can get Vegas to retire their gold helmets...
