***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (2 Viewers)

Howard runs through 2017, though they can buy him out in 2017 for $10 million.

Lee's deal runs through next season. $27.5 for 2016, though I believe that they can buy him out for $12.5.

Well they're in a weak division. How can a team such a large payroll be this bad?
If you take out Howard and Lee, who are providing 0 value (I guess negative value even), they would be in the bottom quarter in payroll.
Are both deals up after rthis season or is it next season?
Lee has a $12.5M buyout next year and Howard a $10M one in 2017.

This is their last year of really high payroll commitments and they have high enough revenues to live with Howard's dead money. The biggest problem now is the lack of young talent. They have some prospects in the pipeline and will benefit from high draft picks for at least a few years. They need to do a better job of talent evaluation and development and a little luck wouldn't hurt.

Well, yeah. The post-2003 draft record is atrocious.

Howard is done after next season but with a '17 option and 10m buyout. Lee is done this season but with a '16 option and 12.5m buyout.

Yeah, after not having played fantasy BB for a decade-plus, I couldn't have picked a better year to rejoin a league.

I was expecting this team to be bad, but I wasn't expecting them to be completely unwatchable.

"Cody Asche optioned to triple A to play LF. Position change in process. Franco expected to arrive at third this weekend."

So there's that.

Worst record in baseball!!!

We're number 1?
Isn't that where Vegas had them projected at the beginning of the year? I can't remember if they had anyone else lower.
Oh yeah, ranked first there too. In my O/U pool, they were the only team listed under 70, at 68.5, and I took the under.
Wow that seems like a lock after the Cliff Lee injury and knowing that Hamels will be dealt.
One poor homer out of 10 in the pool took the over. He's gonna pay for that one.

They were tied with the White Sox and Cubs for 7th-worst, so I guess they lost a tiebreaker to them both. Also, the Astros get the 2nd pick as compensation for not signing last year's pick, so that bumps them back 1 slot as well.

#### you, Amaro.
It's incredible to me the Phillies let him speak in public. Putting aside how bad he is at his job, after the whole "not knowing the difference between a plate appearance and an at-bat" thing, I would have made sure to keep him under wraps.

Rube is doing everything he can to get fired--What that tells me is that he is getting a lot of pressure from above and probably has for some time

He's a pompous windbag. He'll call in to sports talk while he's in his car listening. He loves himself. I don't disagree with him saying we need to be patient and let them work the plan. Problem is I don't see a ####### plan. And he's made mistake after mistake so I don't trust him at all to get it back on course. The only reason why he still has a job is because Montgomery is still alive. They need a majority owner who will clean house from top to bottom and start from scratch. Their scouting and minor league system is a complete joke. The old boy network needs to go.

I think he genuinely meant what he said. He's smarter than us.

guy's made millions of dollars without having any clue what he is doing. I would say that he is smarter than us.

From Baseball America:

Selection: Cornelius Randolph, ss, Griffin (Ga.) HS

Scouts became very familiar with Griffin (Ga.) High in 2008 when Tim Beckham was the first overall pick in the draft. Now, Randolph has them coming back to the Atlanta area school to see another likely first-rounder. Unlike Beckham, Randolph will not stay at shortstop as a professional. But his natural hitting ability is such that questions about his future position havent done much to dissuade scouts. He is a disciplined hitter with an excellent feel for the strike zone. There is some swing-and-miss in his game, but when hes at his best he stays balanced and drives the ball to all fields. He has the strength and bat speed necessary to hit for above-average power, giving him a chance to be one of the best all-around hitters in the draft class. While scouts are sure Randolph isnt a shortstop, they arent quite sure where hell settle defensively. Some believe his hands and arm are good enough that he could become a capable third baseman if he works to improve his infield actions. Others see him as a future left fielder, where he could concentrate on his hitting. No matter where the Clemson recruit ends up defensively, Randolphs main attraction will be his hitting ability.

He had the goofiest MLB-TV interview package of all the selections so there's that

The bolded have been ignored all too often by Phillies scouts, so this is very encouraging.

I mean, if he keeps up what he has been doing in his short tenure at reading, then I can't imagine he won't be here at some point next year. Realistically, I would suspect 2017. He is still only 20.

I dont see the rush in getting any of these guys (crawford, nola, elfin) to the big leagues. This team is at least 3-4 years away from even starting to resemble a good young team. Keep 'em down until they force your hand as far as Im concerned.

True, but if Crawford were to keep his OPS over .900, I think that would definitely force their hand. Sometimes these things can come together faster than you might expect.

Getting the kids out to a few ballparks this summer. They mostly seem interested in mascots.

Gonna make it out to a phillies game soon.

Where can I find info on the phanatic?

Is he around taking pics with kids prior to game?

Does he walk around certain spots during the game?

etc?

Phillies and Braves the only teams in the NL with no one in the top 5 in all-star voting (top 15 for OF). Wei-Yin Chin sent down to the minors because he is dealing with general fatigue, the day after he absolutely dominates the Phils. This is beyond pathetic.

Someone has to pay for this, right?? Nothing is being done, and it's all being accepted as ok? Wtf? Cut someone, fire someone, this is disgusting.

It is kind of a leadership problem in the front office, I would say. Ruben is seemingly an idiot. I doubt that Gillick really has the energy to try to re-build this thing. Montgomery is sick (not that he was great, but at least there was somebody supposedly in charge). Middleton, who knows, probably spends most of time keeping his son away from twitter. No idea who is even a decision maker at all, let alone a good one.

You're right, just a rudderless ship floating into the abyss. Oh hey, rumors Andy McPhail possibly the next President. Sure, another 70 year old should jump start things.

Phillies now with 21 straight starts without a win. Just beat the streak of 1972.

An 0-8 road trip and the only thing that happened is Ruff was sent down for Dom Brown. Awesome.

Lowest runs scored through 26 games of Spring training. 9th worst runs allowed. This could be a record breaking season for the Fightins.

It would be tradition after all. Here's the 20 worst seasons of the modern era.

Season Franchise League Wins Losses Pct. GB

1916 Philadelphia Athletics AL 36 117 .235 54½

1919 Philadelphia Athletics AL 36 104 .257 52

1935 Boston Braves NL 38 115 .248 61½

1939 St. Louis Browns AL 43 111 .279 64½

1911 Boston Rustlers NL 44 107 .291 54

1909 Boston Doves NL 45 108 .294 65½

1939 Philadelphia Phillies NL 45 106 .298 50½

1938 Philadelphia Phillies NL 45 105 .300 43

1911 St. Louis Browns AL 45 107 .296 56½

1945 Philadelphia Phillies NL 46 108 .299 52

1937 St. Louis Browns AL 46 108 .299 56
Phillies own 6 of them. I guarantee a 7th one is going on there this year. The real question is can they catch the 2003 Tigers and reach that 120 loss plateau. Very doable.
That little hiccup of a winning streak early may have cost them the record but I honestly can't see them winning 60 games this year.
