Rumors are a Cody Ross signing is up next... for 4 years.  :X
Come on Ruben, you know better. Hell you only did Ibanez for 3 and that was too much.
This says 3 for 25. http://nesn.com/2012/12/report-phillies-mariners-intensifying-pursuit-of-cody-ross/I guess I can live with that, though really we have to hope that Ruf and/or Brown becomes a real player to have any hope.
Cody Ross will always be alright in my book for his part in the 2010 playoffs but man, that's a lot of money for a guy who's best suited to a platoon role.

Way too much for a career .262 hitter with only 122 hrs to his name. Why would we want another platoon guy especially at $8 mill per year?

Because Ruff and Brown are your corner OFers right now. The money means nothing to me. We need another bat, period.

Because Ross mashes LH pitching. You need somebody, anybody who can hit LH pitching. Right now I don't think the Phils have anybody who can do it.

Yeah, Brown is far better vs. righties than lefties. Perhaps a Ross/Brown platoon for a total of 8.5 million is not so bad? We can hope, right? What else do we have?

Jim Salisbury tweeted this the other day. Phillies' Top 10 Prospects per Baseball America.http://www.csnphilly.com/baseball-philadelphia-phillies/phillies-talk/Baseball-America-names-Phillies-top-10-p?blockID=814495&feedID=4382&utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=referral

1. Jesse Biddle, LHP, 21The 6-4, 225 pound lefty had a 3.22 ERA in 26 starts in the Florida State League in 2012. He will likely open the 2013 season at Double A Reading.2. Roman Quinn, SS, 19Former high school centerfielder is built like Jimmy Rollins, but is a work in progress at shortstop. His blazing speed and ability to switch-hit are big pluses.3. Tommy Joseph, C, 21The centerpiece of the trade that sent Hunter Pence to San Francisco is the organization’s catcher of the future. He has presence that belies his age. Scouts think he could hit for power. Figures to be in major-league camp and play at Triple A in 2013.4. Jonathan Pettibone, RHP, 22The Phils’ most advanced pitching prospect, he got to Triple A in the second half of the 2012 season and will get a look for big-league work in spring training.5. Adam Morgan, LHP, 22The team’s third-round pick in the 2011 draft out of the University of Alabama was impressive at Double A in 2012. He has the potential to rise quickly.6. Ethan Martin, RHP, 23Power-armed righthander came over from the Dodgers in the Shane Victorino deal. He was the first high-school pitcher selected in the 2008 draft (15th overall) and has been slow coming along. Seems to be putting it together as control has improved. Could be in Triple A in 2013.7. Cody Asche, 3B, 22The Phils’ fourth-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Nebraska was the system’s fastest riser in 2012. He went from hitting .192 in the New York-Penn League in 2011 to putting up big numbers in 2012 at Single A Clearwater and Double A Reading. In 518 at-bats at those two levels, he hit .324 with 33 doubles, 6 triples, 12 homers and 72 RBIs. The left-handed hitter projects as the Phils’ third baseman of the future and the future might not be far away.8. Maikel Franco, 3B, 20Franco, a native of the Dominican Republic, could be a power-hitting corner infielder if it all comes together. He projects to play at Clearwater in 2013.9. Darin Ruf, LF/1B, 26He makes his first appearance on the list after hitting his way from Double A to the majors in 2012. For the calendar year, Ruf hit 52 homers in three leagues on two continents. He will get a chance to win a job in the Phils’ outfield in spring training.10. Carlos Tocci, OF, 17Teenager from Venezuela is a pure baseball player with excellent instincts and speed. He’s a top defender who could develop into a good average hitter.

Still not sure why we got rid of Pierre and still have Nix. Not sure why we didn't even keep Pierre but I guess they thought they'd get a big name in the market. Just when you think some momentum is building for a vet, RAJ squashes that. http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2013/1/8/3850392/phillies-rumors-club-done-making-movesCan't see them going with this team into spring training. $19 million in two relievers and less than $1.5 million for our outfielders.

I guess he's biding his time now for a trade to come up. I do see him going with this roster unfortunately. Hopefully they play better to start the season this year.

Hamels' shoulder soreness. Please be nothing.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/Hamels_experiences_soreness.html

Justin Klugh, Philly.com Staff

POSTED: Thursday, January 10, 2013, 11:56 AM

Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels has reportedly suffered "soreness" in his shoulder while taking part in an winter training regimen, reports Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly.

The starter, who received a $144 million, six-year extension this past July, appears to be fine. General manager Ruben Amaro downplayed the matter, claiming, "...we don't view this as an issue at all."

After "getting aggressive" with his workouts in October, Hamels was reportedly struggling enough for the team to "shut him down" for a few weeks, Amaro says. While he remained mum on whether or not the 29-year-old pitcher had been treated for the pain, Amaro explained that Hamels did not need to be examined.

I guess at that number, it's really too much of a risk. I don't know what he'll give us though.

And it's time to unrealistically raise our hopes for Dom Brown again!
Yes, please. Although I'm not being unrealistic about it. Okay, maybe a little unrealistic but I no longer expect to see him in the Stanton, Hayward crew. But I'll settle for .270, with 20 HR, 80/80 and 10 SB's. I'd like to see him hit off lefties but that might be asking for a bit much. But that is the problem with Philly fans. We always overreact to everything. Baseball players take a bit to develop, but I'll put my money on him over Ruf in the long term. Ruf looks like he should open in the minors yet everyone was penciling him in on opening day. But Phillies are hopefully adding a healthy Howard, Utley and Halladay for the full season. Lee can't get any unluckier. Revere looks like he could be a fun little player especially if he becomes lead-off and Young gives us a righty with power. I'm excited for the year well apart from Lannan.

Phillies rebound after Dominican Republic destroyed them yesterday. Scored 2 runs off Stras.

Nats/Phillies already starting. Stras hits Utley with a fastball, Halladay follows up with a pitch behind Tyler Moore.

ETA: Media will turn this into a rivalry even if there isn't much there.

Also Howard apparently feels slighted US called Hosmer before him.

Maybe Howard with a chip on his shoulder is a good thing. Hasn't had to prove anything since he signed his deal.

So far (knock on wood) pretty much all the questions we have had from last year have been answered in a positive way in Spring Training. Halladay, Utley and Howard have been the big ones and its been great news for all 3. Brown has been having a very nice spring as well and hopefully the light went on with him. The only issue I can see is with Ruff...as it stands today there's no way he's on the opening day roster given his struggles at the plate and in the field

Halladay's fastball is sitting in the 86-88mph range. Not sure how this is positive. Very happy with the offensive guys though.

86-88 after is fine with me on 3/7...So long as he's comes out of this healthy thats all that matters IMO

@JSalisburyCSN: According to one scout behind backstop, Halladay topped out at 87 mph today. Was at 88 in his last outing. #PhilliesTalk

LEARWATER, Fla. -- Roy Halladay was removed from the Philadelphia Phillies' spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday after just one inning, in which his fastball velocity was diminished again.Olney: Halladay Holds Key For PhilliesThe Phillies might feel invigorated, but far too much hinges on Roy Halladay, Buster Olney writes. Blog The Phillies announced Halladay left the game with a stomach virus. There was much anticipation for Halladay's start Sunday, after an ugly exhibition performance against the Tigers last week in which he allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings and had greatly diminished velocity in the 82-86 mph range.Halladay told reporters he felt fine, and the Phillies were encouraged by his bullpen session three days ago.But Halladay struggled for command of his fastball in his inning of work Sunday, needing 25 pitches to get through the inning. Scouts said his fastball velocity today was in the 87 mph range, before he departed.

Roy Halladay struggled in a four-inning outing with the Phillies' Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs at the Carpenter Complex Saturday.Halladay, who left his last start after one inning with a stomach virus, needed 82 pitches to get 11 outs, retiring only seven of the 18 batters he faced. He gave up seven hits, two walks, and hit a batter. Another Toronto hitter reached base on a throwing error by Halladay. The two-time Cy Young Award winner threw 46 strikes but got just two swings-and-misses, both on breaking pitches. His fastball was clocked at between 86 and 89 MPH.

So my early concerns about Doc are growing by the minute. Something's wrong, and I think he's being too stubborn to admit to anything yet. I'm fearing the worst.

On a positive note, here's hoping Dom Brown keeps his new look Wally Joyner batting into the season.

Welp, it was a fun half day of being tied for first. Braves line up will be brutal. You get a little relief at the end as long as McCann is out but 2-6 is dangerous.

Cole had a bad day. His spring was a lot better. He'll be fine. The best thing I saw today was our hitting. Chase 3-4 with 3 RBIs and us scoring 5 runs including 2 in the late innings off of that Braves bull pen. Howard, well who knows.

First game anyway. Could have been worse.

It was nice to see our line up work some counts. I'm going to love Revere. Just the type of guy they've been missing and the kind of guy whose hitting doesn't disappear in October (not that it will matter). Howard has to get that guy in. A tie game and the complexion probably changes. Chase looks healthy. Hunter would have been nice in RF but I guess we'll see what Young brings but not sure how they don't make a move at the deadline.

Young's defense is already showing signs. I'm not that worried about Cole but the Braves line up will eat the bottom of our rotation.

Oof. I guess Doc did a few good things tonight. Velocity was around 90/91. And he had a lot of K's even if it was against Atlanta. But he didn't seem able to put the hitters away which led to a high pitch count and eventually having to give in. Hopefully he gets better and Atlanta's offense is potent but Phillies starting slow was not what they needed.

Was it? Everything I saw was 88 tops. I want you to be right too, I just didn't see anything over 88.

I saw several 90's. I saw a 92 but that seemed to be more of an outlier. We'll see what the average is but I suspect it'll be between 89/90. Not great but not terrible. Obviously it is down but the biggest difference seems to be the strike out pitches. Of course when the velocity is down, it gives them a little more time to react. People expecting Doc of old will be disappointed but I think the fantasy projections with 10-12 wins and a mid to high 3 ERA are possible.

Yea this wasn't good tonight. Seemed to be raining throughout but they played through it. Just a bad all around game though.

According to Baseball Reference, Halladay is the first pitcher since at least 1916 to record only 10 outs and have nine of them be strikeouts.

Utley is looking great, but Howard is brutal. Howard has been known to start slow, but hitless through the first two games is beyond slow.

Waiting to see what Pitch F/X puts up. But he really does seem to be a pitcher trying to reinvent himself. Like last year, throwing a lot more offspeed junk. The K% on his fastball has actually gone up but its come at the expense of the rest of his pitches. It seems that he isn't getting the rise on his fastball anymore (at least according to F/X).

Howard will get his. He actually hit pretty well in spring. Tonight, he worked a good walk and sent a ball to the warning track in LF. When he is driving it to LF, that usually means he is hitting pretty well. The one K was also on a tough strike.

Pitch F/X has Doc's average fastball at 89.6. Just looking at their classification (of which I'm not sure how much emphasis to put), it shows he isn't really throwing 4 seamers but has incorporated a sinker in the past 2 years. The 2 seamer and his cutter have dropped around 2 MPH. But his average sinker was 81.4 while his old four seamer used to be 91/92. That seems to be the biggest difference and maybe he is trying to reinvent himself with more off-speed and a sinker.

Velocity is down, but the bigger problem is his fastball doesnt have the same late movement that made him so nasty. Both the HRs he served up were fastballs. Im afraid we're seeing the end.

It doesn't matter much but Upton's HR was a cut-fastball. It actually wasn't a terrible pitch, was down and away, but Upton muscled it out to right center through the rain. Credit to Upton.

Offense looked decent. Just couldn't get the hit or two to open the game up. Howard hit the balls hard and on another night him and Nix have homers. Once Ruiz gets back and they get Young, their offense has the potential to be fairly potent.

Lee looked good obviously. I expect him and Hamels to have great years. Obviously the season rests on what the other 3 bring us.

Agree. Utley has looked awesome. I could watch his quality ABs all day long. I like what I see from Revere and Brown. JRoll and Howard will produce. Will be nice to get Chooch back. Michael Young is the one Im worried about. Hes a defensive and offensive liability on the field.

I'm surprised by how good Utley has looked (although I shouldn't be given his work ethic). The lineup is actually pretty good when healthy. Couple that with 2 aces and a solid bullpen and they should easily contend for one of the wildcards (they're not sniffing the Nats).

Big thing with Utley will be how he holds up. Hopefully Charlie doesn't run any of them into the ground especially with Galvis and Frandsen here. I actually have liked what I've seen from J Roll. He isn't a lead off hitter and is much better in the 2 hole or even heard they'd might try Chase in the 2 hole and Rollins 5th but I doubt that now. Revere has been a godsend. He is going to be fun and I'm glad the Twins traded us him instead of Willingham (at the time I thought they were mutually exclusive although said they tried to get both, either way Revere will be a great lead off guy long term). Michael Young will hit and once Ruiz is back he'll be 6th or lower so offense from him will be gravy. His defense is a bit of a concern so it is something to monitor but I don't think it'll be a huge issue but it might cost them a game or two. Delmon is the X factor. Mayberry isn't an everyday player. Brown looks to be breaking out and will be an everyday player or close to it. So if Young can play adequate defense and hit like he did last year, that is a dangerous line up. If not, he was a low risk signing and maybe Ruf will be ready by June or they might have to look into a trade. Either way, RAJ had a very solid offseason. My only gripe would be not gettin Youkilis or a longer term solution at 3rd but that is more an answer for next year with Asche.

Bullpen just imploded. Ugh. Kendrick looked good through 4, then his typical fall apart inning in the 5th.
