Heck of a win today. They are obviously not on the same level as the Nats but they steal a game against Pap too. Fun day.

They're going to be a lot of days they won't be able to hit worth #### but considering what's coming up eventually and the surprise of the pitching staff this rebuild may not take as long as most thought.

Nobody’s starters are throwing the curveball like the Phillies starters are throwing the curveball. More than a quarter of all pitches thrown by the Philadelphia rotation have been curveballs. The single-season high by a team in the PITCHf/x era is 24%, by the 2012 Pirates. After that, it’s just 19%, by the 2010 Cardinals. This Phillies team might have the most curveball-heavy rotation since we started tracking such things. Phillies starters have thrown 431 curveballs this season. No other team’s rotation has thrown more than 300.

But it’s not just that the Phillies are throwing a ton of curveballs, it’s how they’re throwing them. The average Phillies curveball breaks seven inches to the glove side, drops eight inches, and spins more than 2,600 revolutions per minute. Only three teams average more drop on their curves than Philadelphia. Only two teams average more spins on their curve than Philadelphia. Spin rate and vertical drop are the two keys to getting whiffs on a curve. The Phillies have those in spades. The Phillies aren’t throwing a ton of curves just because. The Phillies are throwing a ton of curves because they’ve mastered them.

If you want proof that this is an organizational philosophy and not random happenstance, look no further than their offseason acquisitions of Hellickson and Morton. Hellickson’s thrown a curveball 15% of the time during his career, and more in recent years. Morton’s thrown a curveball 20% of the time during his career, and more in recent years. When the Astros acquired Collin McHugh off the waiver wire in late 2013, it was later revealed they did so because of the elite spin rate on his curveball. When that revelation surfaced, Eno Sarris wrote a post over on RotoGraphs titled Finding the Next Collin McHugh with Spin Rates. The third and fourth names at the top of his list? Jeremy Hellickson and Charlie Morton.

For a long time, the Phillies were something of a laughingstock among the sabermetric community for their dated methods of decision-making under former general manager Ruben Amaro. Those jokes have run their course. This new Phillies front office, led by Andy MacPhail and Matt Klentak, has righted the ship. This new Phillies front office is using spin rate to build its rotation of the future.

It really is pretty impressive how this rotation has turned around.  Obviously, Hellickson and Morton are filling space, but they should be adequate.  And in the other 3/5 of the games, there is always going to be something to watch to see how these 3 young guys develop.  I can promise you that I had no interest in watching a Phillies-Brewers' replay last year, but here I sit checking out last night's game.

Love this team. Still waiting for the other shoe to drop but 7 out of 8. When was the last time that happened? 2011?

I love the direction this team is moving in. They have potentially 3 really good young pitchers, a stud at 3b (and possibly CF) and money to spend when the time is right.  I don't think this will be the year but they're much closer than what any of us probably envisioned before the season started.

If you'd told me 3 months ago that in 2018 the Mets might not have the undisputed best rotation in the division, I'd have laughed at you. Now ... I'm not so sure.

plus there are still plenty of talented arms down on the farm with another one in Groom most likely coming No. 1 overall.  I have to give Amaro some credit that he was able to restock the cupboard while Klentak may have hit the jackpot with his return from Giles and Hamels trades with the 'Stros and Rangers.  Still can't get overly excited yet but the ride has been less bumpy than expected.

Yea that long review really robbed their momentum. They're taking way too long to make a decision in a May game. Guy called it foul, if you can't tell if it's fair in the first minute, then the ump was probably right.

I saw a pixelated replay through MLB.com.  That ball must've just barely grazed the chalk.

 
What do Philly homers make of Franco? He had that ridiculous spring, and he was very good through the first part of April, but he's really slowed down. Is it a slump, or something more permanent?

slump.

No numbers show that he is being pitched significantly differently or has any peripherals that are significantly different.  His BABIP is low right now.

If we call his slump from April 24 to May 13, he has hit 47 balls.  30 of those 47 have an exit velocity of 95 mph or more.  Giancarlo Stanton's average is 95.3.  (https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_leaderboard)

do not sweat it if or until we see pitchers getting a better book on him and trying to pitch him differently.

 
At this point might as well pinch hit a pitcher for Howard against a leftie.

It's a real tough spot for the Phils to be in, I don't envy it at all. It's a brinks truck of money and an all time Phille. Nothing easy about it. Just feels like they need to swallow a big pill and save everyone further embarrassment and let the kids play. Finally time to turn the page. :kicksrock:

Yeah, I think the fanbase knows it too, the only person that doesn't is Ryan.  Which is sad.

He can't possibly be that naive, right? Last year he sounded like it but haven't heard him this season. He's getting the money either way, might as well pay him not to hurt your team anymore. He literally brings nothing to the table, he's taking from the table and he has to see that, I would think.

If I'm Mackanin, I have to bench him. Let him play every 4th or 5th day and call it resting my vet.

On another note, I can't help but call him Mack-a-nin every time I see it spelled out. And it bothers me.

He just needs to be traded for a bag of dog#### at this point.  It sucks but the guy is not an MLB caliber everyday player anymore.  His fielding is the worst it's ever been and it has always been sub-par.  He could possibly do some damage as a DH platoon specialist (if such a thing exists) at best for an AL team.  I really hate saying that but it's the truth.

I just look at him as Matt Stairs at this  point.  He has 21 hits and 8 of them are Home runs. Use him off the bench as a pinch hitter. At this point he knows he's stating for the $25m. I wouldn't be leaving either. Just level with him and say look, Joseph is going to start for awhile and were going to use you off the bench. What's he going to do?
